A bidet, you should buy a bidet.

People have to know how to create the math problem then. Schools are really falling down here

You can also get a travel bidet, if you can't permanently install one, or just want to try it out. It's basically just a squeeze bottle with a nozzle...

Standing in the shower and spreading your asscheeks is still free

trem@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 1d

Sure, I guess, for trying out what a bidet would be like, you can do that.

For more regular usage, though, when you can't install a proper bidet, I would recommend investing the 10-20 bucks for a travel bidet. It's a lot easier/quicker, when the splash water goes straight into the toilet and you don't have to completely take off your pants+socks...

errer@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 2d (7 replies)

I have wondered what the math of a bidet is. Decent ones cost a few hundred bucks. When does the TP saving win out? How long do bidets last?

openchan@piefed.social · 10 pts · 2d

bizarroland@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 2d

There are cheap ones that just connect to the water line between your toilet and the tank and they're like 20 bucks and they'll last you a couple years.

It takes a little getting used to the cold water spray, but I mean if you're that desperate that you're calculating the 30 cent difference per roll, then it might be worth the investment.

surewhynotlem@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 2d (1 reply)

I've had mine since 2020 and it cost like $40.

Zero frills. Still $40 apparently.

MrQuallzin@pie.eyeofthestorm.place · 1 pts · 1d

I've got the same one. It's lasted several years at this point. Aiming is a bit of a pain, but it does the job.

MonkeMischief@lemmy.today · 4 pts · 2d

Honestly bidets are super fancy but you could just go with a "bum gun." Little gentle water sprayer you attach to your toilet line and voila. Got mine for like $20-$30 or something.

Quite incredible. So much that I'm miffed this isn't a standard expected thing on toilets.

kestrel7_7@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2d

Personally I started using like. 75% less TP once I got a bidet. Combined with spending $30 on the bidet itself, that's easy savings.

You can get a cheap one for like $25-50 and install it yourself (pretty easy, not actual plumbing, just screwing and unscrewing a few things) and they're fine. The more expensive ones have heated water, but you don't need that. I eventually sprang for a "nicer" one, but now I feel that was unnecessary. Maybe I'm a freak, but I prefer the cold water anyway.

taiyang@lemmy.world · 60 pts · 2d (4 replies)

Can confirm; I teach statistics and allow take home exams. I don't even really need guardrails on the math-- if you cheat via LLM, your answer is almost always hilariously wrong.

Mika@piefed.ca · 8 pts · 2d (3 replies)

I've not used gpt for quite a while, but can't you ask to python script the evaluation?

EnsignWashout@startrek.website · 25 pts · 2d (2 replies)

For simple math that could work, and as long as the question is close enough to an exact match with plenty of published examples to copy.

A good rule of thumb is that the script it will come up with is about as likely to be correct as blindly taking the highest voted answer to the most similar question on Stack Overflow.

If the question is simple and common, the odds are quite good. If the question is nuanced or rare, the odds of a correct result drop off aggressively.

Edit: Your mileage may vary - providing an API to these LLMs that can do math correctly for them is pretty easy. Getting the LLM to consistently detect when to use that API is more challenging. But work-arounds exist.

gandalf_der_13te@feddit.org · 2 pts · 1d (1 reply)

cannot confirm. have used chatgpt many times to check my physics homework (after doing it myself first) and it was basically correct about 90% of the time.

these were not standard exercises (i think)

EnsignWashout@startrek.website · 1 pts · 23h

Thanks. I think every data point helps people.

I can't say that particularly shocks me. I imagine that Chat GPT has probably swallowed dozens of Physics textbooks.

The bigger part of the problem is knowing where we are on the human knowledge novelty / training data available curve, or rather, when we need to get off of the ride.

Edit: Any chance your chosen AI has access to Wolfram Alpha as an MCP Tool? Because that would be very different, too.

If it's successful at math, there's likely much more than a learning model in play.

Which brings us back to the opacity problem. :(

If the answer machine has been cleverly rigged (and weighted) to pass off math questions to more capable software, things can be great.

But a person who just hears that AI can do math now can have a very bad time if they go blindly use a brute force pleasant answer machine on a math problem. :(

Gormadt@slrpnk.net · 45 pts · 2d (3 replies)

Yesterday I literally had to count 14 thousand pounds of fire extinguishers (as in count each extinguisher in a bunch of crates), one of my coworkers came over and said "Why don't you just use AI to count them." They then pulled out their phone, took a picture, asked AI to count them, and was off buy almost 60% on the first crate. Then went "oh, well that's just one example,"

They then tried 4 more times, being between 75% and 50% off each time. They then went "Oh, well, ummm, nevermind." and wandered off again.

(I had to count the extinguishers to make a Bill of Lading for them for shipping them out, you need an accurate count otherwise it will be held by the shipping company until you provide a correct BoL with the correct count due to legal reasons. I couldn't just weigh them and divide the total wieght by the weight of a single extinguisher as they were a bunch of different sizes mixed together. NGL it was the easiest money I've ever made at the at job.)

Gormadt@slrpnk.net · 17 pts · 2d

Oh it sucked for sure, I kept getting interrupted which meant whatever crate I was counting at the time had to be started over.

But the biggest perk was not having to deal with the other idiots on our loading dock for the entire time I was counting.

Though I've joked about it in the past I really should get a shirt that says "I'm trying to focus on my job, please don't distract me" or something like that.

ruan@lemmy.eco.br · 5 pts · 1d

Yes, but most of the paid "LLMs" are not actually just LLMs, they have specific aritimetic modules that end up being activated for most math questions that actual LLMs suck at, however are pretty easy for arithmetic modules, like simple calculations, unit conversions, etc...

So yeah, any edge "LLM" tool currently will always get the original question asked here CORRECT even on the free tiers, you can test it yourself on Google Search itself in "AI mode", on ChatGPT, or DeepSeek...

So you are technically correctly in saying that LLMs suck and cannot be trusted for math in almost any case. However you are wrong on implying that ChatGPT, or other commercial models are just LLMs, they are not.

P.S.: I'm not condoning the use of AI to resolve math related questiona, nor saying that their replies should be trusted, just stating the fact that actual "AI" products use more than just a large language model to generate their responses, and for math related questions most "AI" today will get arithmetic question answered correctly NOT DEPENDING on having training for the exact questiona being asked since they can identify a math arithmetic question being asked and instead of trying to fully generate the answer with the model itself, which would lack the training data to be able to process such wide range of possible question, they generate placeholders internally and let a arithmetic like module do the calculations, which take negligible processing power to be cacoulated by CPUs.

Feathercrown@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 2d (11 replies)

This actually isn't too hard to solve. Double the value of each option by removing the folding requirement from the 2-ply and halving the price of the 3-ply to get an even comparison of 2-ply (330 sheets for $0.70) and 3-ply (300 sheets for $0.60), then recognize that it's not worth adding 1/6 the price for 1/10th the sheets, to see that the 3-ply option is better.

howrar@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 1d

The ply count doesn't reflect thickness or softness at all. Of the 3-ply toilet papers I've used at home, some need three layers to not fall apart on the first wipe, others are fine with a single sheet.

Grail@multiverse.soulism.net · 3 pts · 1d (2 replies)

That's needlessly complicated.

If you're folding the 2-ply, you only get 165 wipes. So divide 70 by 165 to get 0.42 cents a wipe

Now the 3-ply is 300 wipes, so divide 120 by 300 to get 0.40 cents a wipe

The cheap stuff is more expensive.

Feathercrown@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d (1 reply)

I carry a calculator at all times. My math teachers were wrong.

dream_weasel@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 2d (2 replies)

It hurts my brain to do it that way.

300 sheets for 1.2 is a nice division by .6: 500 sheets for $2. So now all we gotta do is multiply by .7 to get 350 sheets for 1.40.

Considering the fold, we are at 330 effective sheets for 1.40. 350 > 330, get the 3 ply (lol).

This is a little bit funky obviously and just works because of seeing a divisor. If not for that I would have tried once each way to get cost per full effective sheet or cost per half effective sheet to see which one has nicer numbers.

... Or just open the calculator app.

Feathercrown@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2d

A nice division by 0.6

You guys don't have unit pricing? In Australia it's required by law that supermarkets show price per standard unit of measurement so you can easily compare

awfulawful@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 26 pts · 1d

We do! What's really helpful is many products of the same category are in different units. One will be per sheet, one per roll, one per 100 sheets, one per 500 sheets... and then the true thickness is completely different, so 1 ply for one brand will hold up ok while another will start disintegrating the moment you pull it off the roll. Do you feel free yet?

nullspace@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d

I don't think unit counts account for what ply the toilet paper is.

The tp I normally buy from Amazon went from $19.99 to $24.99 during the pandemic. The horror!!

Under trump 2.0, they have been over $30 on average, sometimes as high as $43.99.

Right now they're $26.99 and I literally bought 6 boxes. I've been refusing to buy over $30 and have been buying a cheaper brand until the price came down 🧻

ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 7 pts · 2d

I got sick of the price gouging so I got a bidet for $25 and a pack of 60 cotton washcloths for $30, and other than for guests and such, I just don't use TP anymore. If I’m wiping after a bowel movement, it goes into the laundry and isn't used again until washed (sanitary cycle with bleach). So each cloth is used for a day at most.

I know that probably sets off the squick for a lot of people, but it is basically the same soil level as worn underpants (and way less gross than cloth diapers!), since the bidet takes care of the actual mess, so it just doesn’t bother me, and in the long run saves a ton. Extra bonus, I never run out!

A reasonable assumption to make, but you would be wrong.

According to Howard Carter, president of the board of trustees at the Water Environment Federation (WEF), a nonprofit established in 1928 that works to protect public health and the environment, this isn’t just a nightmare scenario—it’s a reality for these workers. Carter tells CR that workers can be on call any given night, and it’s not unusual to get calls at 2 a.m. because of pumps blocked by wipes. “We try to keep up with these things by engineering different products to help, but it’s just a very, very expensive endeavor,” Carter says. These costs, part of the NACWA’s estimate of $441 million a year in operating costs to deal with wipes in sewage systems, range from investing in new technologies to track the level of water in pipes and manholes due to blockages from wipes, to investing in new pumps that will actually cut up the wipes. “These are all extra capital costs associated with increased staff time to monitor and remediate,” Carter says.

Hell, here's a link to a FAQ from a company that would benefit from more people using "flushable" wipes:

I just fuckthe dead on camera and make two-three figures easy. Get with the fucking times, bro. Just let your sister die out autoaphasia with a mild case of head trauma from seven points of impact which likely came from the transportation of the victim, I mean, patient, and you got an easy route to make your beer and weed money back each night, if you got a secure internet connection.
