I stopped at ps3. But when I worked at Activision, I learned that the ps5 was a great system to work on for development. It's too bad that they're fucking over consumers
PS5 and series X are pretty much just standardised PCs as far as hardware is concerned and they're both full AMD setups to boot, I imagine it's much easier to develop console games now.
PS3 had a weird ass CPU architecture. Very hard to make use of efficiently because of specialised coprocessors IIRC.
I actually ended up with a hierarchy of dev kits. I found the last gen kits to be miserable to work with, but the xbox dev sdk is pretty nice for both series and xbone. The PS5 is at the top for their suite of development tools. PS4 in comparison was horrific to use. PC with bnet was really good, but the build list could be overwhelming. There were times where different localization servers on the same server had different builds, it got very confusing at times

Yes, but if/when Sony kills support for those systems the disc becomes a useless piece of plastic unless you have the entire game catalog installed. A ton of discs don't contain enough of the game data to be playable out of the box.
Realistically we need laws changing to catch up. Nobody, not even good old uncle Gabe, are going to give us the same rights we had with physical games.
You own them the same way you own Steam Games without DRM. If you keep a backup of them you'll always have them but if the store goes away or terminates the files you won't be able to re-download it from them.
So the same as physical games then, if you lose your copy its gone. But its much easier to backup and have multiple.

Steam is still driving a lot of support for Proton and other open-source development for gaming on Linux, which is why they're still worth supporting. And if (maybe when) they enshittify, then it is far easier to sail the high seas on any Linux gaming rig than it is on any console.

I'm convinced that Sony and Microsoft formed an agreement to both enshittify. Sony dropped the ball but Microsoft isn't even trying to capitalise on that failure. Competition would usually immediately hit any signs of weakness but Microsoft isn't even doing it. From the looks of it, Microsoft is even doing their own mistakes alongside Sony.
MS aren't trying to capitalise because they were already planning to do the same thing. Maybe for the fact they did it first, Sony are getting all the heat while the other players are sitting back waiting for it to blow over. And it will.
The fact is, most people don't want physical media. Even the people complaining aren't really complaining about physical media, they are complaining about buying a licence to software, which has been a thing longer than most people complaining have been alive.
Fuck them they can keep Mario Kart. If there was ever a moment to decide to follow your moral beliefs, not buying a switch 2 would be the easiest way to practice that.

Its an acer nitro 5 an515-55, p nice specs for when it released (2016-2020 ish i think).
Actually my gf's old work machine (she does a lot of 3d modelling), we got a replacement free of charge because of manufacturing error regarding the battery, so its just been laying around. Perfect for this usecase as i just removed the battery, bypassing any funkiness in there.
So yeah lots of unknown variables there. If i had completely free choice id have gone with an amd gpu based machine. Muuuch less setup involved. The only real challenge in the setup was getting the nvidia gpu to play nice lol

The minute you do things like implementing a web browser interface to simplify development time at the expense of increased complexity, your product becomes functionally indistinguishable from a PC which your customers will switch to eventually to.
It's also invalid since PCs now can also do exactly that with Valve releasing Gamescope and Big picture, which people colloquially call SteamOS. Even though you can do the same thing on any Linux Distro.
It literally does exactly that. It loads a console-like UI in Steam to select Games and doesn't load heavy stuff like a browser or desktop. Unless you want to boot that stuff up.

My last one was PS4 and I regret buying it now. I had like 40 games for PS3 and I thought I would probably repeat with PS4 but and at the end of the day, I only was interested enough to get 9 games. I'm just way too into doing things on the PC now and there's just not enough exciting exclusive content to justify consoles for me.
Be cautious if you decide to try it, and do your research.
Most jailbreaks and exploits only work if the console has old firmware on it and it never got updated to more recent firmware for whatever reason. If the firmware isn't old enough, then you can't put custom stuff on it, and then you just have a regular PS5.
Last one I had was the PS3 and since I own most of the same games I have on it on PC, it seems kind of pointless. Plus it roars like a Jet engine and still gets high temps despite having re-pasted it.
I picked up a used ps3 slim after my Xbox 360 red ringed, and it got some decent use as a netflix machine (back when that was cheap and still kinda new-ish) and a few games, but I noticed that I played damn few things on it overall, and beyond ratchet and clank and the first red dead, the exclusives didn't do much for me, so I sold it.
I didn't have a console for a long time afterward, over a decade. None of the newer options from Xbox or Sony appealed to me, especially with the requirement to pay a monthly fee to pay online (I only ever did a free trial of Xbox Live on my 360).
Then this year I picked up an old Wii with a balance board on a lark. Fuck me if it wasn't the best console I've ever owned.
Super easy to mod, tons of good emulators can run on it, wireless classic controllers are dirt cheap and feel great, tons of great exclusives, motion controls actually kick ass and feel fresh (resident evil 4 has been a blast with them), the balance board with Wii fit actually works great and is surprisingly unique and useful, it goes on.
Some may disagree, but honestly I think consoles peaked at the Wii, and its been downhill from there.
The Wii U is nice too, though in my mind it's mostly just a slightly upgraded Wii with an HDMI connection, as it never really got many good titles made for it outside of the Zelda remasters/BOTW. I think it does have access to a few more emulators if modded though.

We have two Wii and two Wii U here, both are modded, my son does all that. My daughter has a third, our old original, that’s modded as well.
Some things Nintendo do and did so well that the others struggle with. The kind of fun you’re having with the balance bard and Wii Fit echoes that. After all this time they still work brilliantly.
I gave away my previous Ps4, but now I'm in a weird spot where I don't have a bluray player. It sounds like getting a bluray drive for Linux systems doesn't seem to work very for drm reasons, so I'm trying to decide whether I should get a new drive for my ps3 or maybe get a new ps4. Ps5 is way too expensive. 🤔
For patching this seems to only work with 1 specific drive chipset. Also not sure if 'native support' in the chart means any BD drive (when relevant) or only if it only works with BD drives that were already models that had the specific hardware/firmware to read games (I'm guessing it's this one).
I would be very upset with my old non-compatible LG drive if I didn't also lack the other circumstances that would make ripping games usable.
I was able to source the keys and play movies just fine. Only thing was that the Menu didn't work on VLC, so I had to play the titles directly. They all played fine though. The key thing though stagnates development and means issues won't be fixed due to perceptions abut obtaining said keys.
I think my old PC had one, but I'm assuming my new one does not. I haven't bought or rented a Blu-ray in ages though, so I wouldn't know. If I got desperate, I suppose I could dust off the old PC
My second DVD player, my second Blu-ray player, and I didn’t have that one but I had a PS1.
Can the design of the PS4 get some love? One of if not the coolest looking consoles ever. That and the GameCube. Never owned either but always admired the style.
I wonder how long Sony will even bother with the PlayStation. Nintendo had to merge its console and portable lines and Sony's big reason to have the line was to push its hardware standards.

Just get a used LTO6 tape drive. You can get 6TB (compressed) cartridges for like $15 each on ebay.

Also for ones that use Steam DRM it can be simulated. It's a stretch to call it hard DRM and I wish more people would mention this aspect.

I understand there are different levels to the word "own".
Own them as in "I can play them even if that store is unavailable in the future" is one level.
Own them as in "I can trade/give them to others when I don't want them any more" is another.
One is not better than the other, and they're not mutually exclusive. But physical gives you both of them. Digital doesn't. Or not yet at least.

I was team PlayStation until the Vita, which betrayed my trust.
How Sony handled the PS4 made me lose faith in the company as a whole, with how they handled PS Plus
And the PS5 just made it easier to never buy from them again.
Sony is only a good company when it’s trying to win, while loosing. See PS1 and the end of PS3 era

My old work laptop has an 11th gen i9 and rtx 3080 (laptop) and it goes for about $900 on ebay these days. Basically the same as a PS5 pro.

We have two Wii and two Wii U here, both are modded, my son does all that. My daughter has a third, our old original, that’s modded as well.
Some things Nintendo do and did so well that the others struggle with. The kind of fun you’re having with the balance bard and Wii Fit echoes that. After all this time they still work brilliantly.

I gave away my previous Ps4, but now I'm in a weird spot where I don't have a bluray player. It sounds like getting a bluray drive for Linux systems doesn't seem to work very for drm reasons, so I'm trying to decide whether I should get a new drive for my ps3 or maybe get a new ps4. Ps5 is way too expensive. 🤔

You can hack blu ray players, which can help get around DRM but also let you make your own rips of both movies and games.

For patching this seems to only work with 1 specific drive chipset. Also not sure if 'native support' in the chart means any BD drive (when relevant) or only if it only works with BD drives that were already models that had the specific hardware/firmware to read games (I'm guessing it's this one).
I would be very upset with my old non-compatible LG drive if I didn't also lack the other circumstances that would make ripping games usable.

I was able to source the keys and play movies just fine. Only thing was that the Menu didn't work on VLC, so I had to play the titles directly. They all played fine though. The key thing though stagnates development and means issues won't be fixed due to perceptions abut obtaining said keys.

I think my old PC had one, but I'm assuming my new one does not. I haven't bought or rented a Blu-ray in ages though, so I wouldn't know. If I got desperate, I suppose I could dust off the old PC

It's not the hardware that's the issue, it's the software. Bluray on Linux is pretty broken.

My second DVD player, my second Blu-ray player, and I didn’t have that one but I had a PS1.
Can the design of the PS4 get some love? One of if not the coolest looking consoles ever. That and the GameCube. Never owned either but always admired the style.

I wonder how long Sony will even bother with the PlayStation. Nintendo had to merge its console and portable lines and Sony's big reason to have the line was to push its hardware standards.
