It's your first date and she/he asks what type of music you like. What's the guilty pleasure you won't tell her/him about?

Why isn't it just common practice to just use "they" instead the entirely cumbersome "he/her"?

Like it's just so much easier to type out and say, and it's just better to use regardless.

Tyoda@lemm.ee · 31 pts · 1y (3 replies)

The fun part is that you'll have people complaining about it either way!

xmunk@sh.itjust.works · 28 pts · 1y

Yea, but the people who complain about "they" are assholes so we can safely ignore them.

spankmonkey@lemmy.world · -6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I am offended by your use of 'people', that excludes folk and kin!

Rawr!

Tyoda@lemm.ee · 5 pts · 1y

You were not appreciated in your time.

Evkob@lemmy.ca · 18 pts · 1y

Not only is it more readable and aesthetically-pleasing, singular "they" is more inclusive of people outside the gender binary!

faultypidgeon@programming.dev · 7 pts · 1y

Love how the top comment doesn't even answer the question. But TIL, I guess. If I had known this option existed, I probably would have used it. I'm going to play the "not a native english speaker"-card on this one.

Geometrinen_Gepardi@sopuli.xyz · -28 pts · 1y (5 replies)

Because "they" refers to multiple people?

Alinor@lemmy.world · 40 pts · 1y (1 reply)

It doesn't though. They has been used for singular without knowing the gender for a long time.

Zahille7@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 1y

Like at least since English has been a language.

Evkob@lemmy.ca · 27 pts · 1y

Singular "they" actually predates singular "you".

Fondots@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 1y

My friend forgot their umbrella at the office.

They nervously answered the phone.

They're a lazy motherfucker.

I gave my friend a hug and wished them a speedy recovery.

Any of those sound unusual, or like they're referring to more than one person?

henfredemars@infosec.pub · 1 pts · 1y

I was taught this very aggressively in school, but it turns out that it’s just not true and there’s a long history of singular they.

Mothra@mander.xyz · 24 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Darude Sandstorm.

Not even joking

spankmonkey@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y

You can always use the recorder cover to see if they make a comment about liking the real version.

gazter@aussie.zone · 17 pts · 1y (1 reply)

None!

There should be no guilty pleasures in music. Especially dating. It's much more attractive to have a wide range of tastes and be comfortable with what you like.

Hadriscus@lemm.ee · 1 pts · 1y

yea exactly. I don't feel guilty for the music I like

fckreddit@lemmy.ml · 14 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Nickelback.

linearchaos@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1y (1 reply)

If I have to hate a reasonably decent pop rock band to earn points I shouldn't even be on the date.

fckreddit@lemmy.ml · 5 pts · 1y

I don't have a baseline when it comes to pop songs. Also, I have never been on a date anyways. So, it's all good.

andrewta@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 1y

Doesn't exist. I tell them what I like. If they can't handle the truth then it wouldn't work anyway.

I also don't have guilty pleasures. I enjoy things.

jBlight@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 1y (2 replies)

So I put my hands up. They're playin' my song, the butterflies fly away. I'm noddin' my head like, yeah. Movin' my hips like, yeah. I got my hands up, they're playin' my song. They know I'm gonna be okay. Yeah, it's a party in the U.S.A. Yeah, it's a party in the U.S.A.

BCsven@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y

I bought a Front242 CD from a record shop once, got home to find out the staff had grabbed Steely Dan CD an put that in the case accidentally. (The days before tamper proof display adapters, where the media was stored behind the counter)

I have some Brittany Spears and Backstreet Boys on my gym mix.

davidgro@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1y (3 replies)

I will gladly tell them how much I like Weird Al.

Akasazh@feddit.nl · 4 pts · 1y (2 replies)

That's not really the question, though

davidgro@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

It's in the spirit of the question, with 'Nobody' being the implied direct answer. Just saying my pleasure (musically) is not guilty or secret.

Akasazh@feddit.nl · 1 pts · 1y

Yeah and I definitely agree, your taste is without reprieve.

It's just that it's the opposite of what the questionneer wanted to know

It's your first date and she/he asks what type of music you like. What's the guilty pleasure you won't tell her/him about?

I love music and hate but being myself (AuADHD weeeee) so, they're going to hear an honest answer. If they're not down with my love of folk punk and what I classify as "shitty punk rock" (you just the kind - overly-compressed, terribly mixed, played by people who barely know how to tune a guitar), well, that's fair enough. Same as if they aren't up for my, AuADHD - neurodivergence can be a bit to handle.

joshcodes@programming.dev · 4 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I see a potential fellow days n daze enjoyer...?

ICP

FurtiveFugitive@lemm.ee · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Came here for this. I can still recite a crazy number of those songs 20+ years after I stopped listening to them.

Notyou@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I actually went on an ICP rabbit hole earlier this year and played all the videos I didn't know existed. I just listened to their albums in my youth. Luckily my wife used to listen to them as well and we made it a drunken night of it.

FurtiveFugitive@lemm.ee · 2 pts · 1y

Nice. I did listen to some of the albums that came out after I fell off the wagon. Nothing quite as good as those first few joker cards though.

Skullgrid@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1y

depends, but I usually don't reference more of the occasional things I listen to , less of the electronic/breakcore or experimental/obviously avant garde (less Secret chiefs 3, more crossfire duo )

EDIT : my wife doesn't mind the tech death/grindcore, she does mind the free jazz/avant garde classical

I love singing Kalinika... I'd probably avoid mentioning it because Russia is an authoritarian state that likely wouldn't approve of me dating the person I'm talking to. Also, the Russian government sucks in like a billion other ways.

Klordok@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

I'm not big into matching band music, but I went to a MarchFourth concert on a whim and had a fun time. Lots of juggling, hula hooping, dancing. They even had a guy doing yo-yo tricks to a saxophone solo.
