Donald Trump issues Greenland deadline

https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-issues-greenland-deadline-11306810

President Donald Trump has said the U.S. will revisit its stance on Greenland in the coming weeks.

Asked if he expected to take action on the territory, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday: "Let's talk about Venezuela, Russia, Ukraine. We'll worry about Greenland in about two months. Let's talk about Greenland in 20 days."

He added: "We need Greenland from a national security situation. It's so strategic."

Fuck trump

A_norny_mousse@feddit.org · 31 pts · 228d (7 replies)

🤷

Even his most coherent quotes contradict themselves, and he talks shit all day long. And the phrasing "Greenland deadline" is a little too evocative for my taste, but clickbait is a must these days.

Jhex@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 227d (1 reply)

yes, it's not like actually already invaded a country and kidnapped its leader... I mean, stop exaggerating please

A_norny_mousse@feddit.org · 3 pts · 227d

It sounds like it's a deadline for Greenland, which sounds ominous, but really he just said "we'll talk about it". Damn I hate how the media sanewash Trump all the time. He's babbling! Don't report on it as if he said something of consequence.

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 7 pts · 227d (4 replies)

Apparently he thinks one month is ten days...

But yeah, calling that a deadline is kinda clickbaity.

A_norny_mousse@feddit.org · 3 pts · 227d (3 replies)

Plus, it sound slike some decision will be made then, when all he said was "let's talk about Greenland then".

At best, it's a deadline for him and his advisors, not for Greenland. Which is ludicrous anyhow.

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 227d (2 replies)

From what he actually said, it sounds like talks about a potential decision will begin then. That's not at all what a deadline is.

The way it was reported made it sound like a decision was already made, and actions would be taken by then. That's not at all what he said though.

There's already plenty of legitimate reasons to criticize him, so I can't stand when journalists distort things to make them seem even worse. It gives too much credence to the people defending him by framing all criticism as media spin.

Things are already bad enough without reactionary sensationalism, so just focus on the facts without compromising journalistic integrity. Otherwise it's just disinformation, which doesn't help anyone. We're supposed to be better than this.

A_norny_mousse@feddit.org · 2 pts · 227d (1 reply)

focus on the facts

even contemplating invading Greenland is ludicrous

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 227d

Exactly, and that's what the journalism should focus on. It detracts from the message when they give it a misleading spin. It's already bad enough without the distortion of facts. That's the point I'm trying to make.

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 23 pts · 227d (1 reply)

He added: "We need Greenland from a national security situation. It's so strategic."

The US already has military bases on Greenland in accordance with diplomatic agreements. This isn't about national security or defense strategy. If it were, there would be diplomatic ways to increase US military presence. This risks losing the diplomatic agreements which allow the US to maintain a military presence there. It won't be very strategic if US forces get banished from the realm.

This isn't about national defense. It's about natural resources. Trump wants to exploit Greenland for its rare minerals the same way he wants to exploit Venezuela for its crude oil.

It's so transparent.

shalafi@lemmy.world · -4 pts · 227d

Greenland is strategic, in addition to mineral extraction. The GOP base may deny global warming, but the powers behind the throne get it. As the Arctic thaws and opens year-round shipping lanes, Greenland becomes prime territory to control.

As to bases, that's a big chunk of land for our single base to cover. We'll want several in key locations.

Should not have been surprised over Venezuela, the US has been scheming on that oil for over two decades, but I'd be surprised if we don't take Greenland, with no real pretense.

Well Europe, we'd better gear up. Although I don't have much hope for us now our spineless 'leaders' don't even dare to call the Venezuela illegal (let alone an act of war)

I really dislike the narrative 'eu can't leave nato' / 'eu can't push back on the us because we need them. I'd really like to know:

  • how true this is
  • how much the people in control want to change this
  • how long it will take to change this

The eu can't allow itself to be treated like this, but also can't allow itself to be forced into a passive stance of having to agree. The eu needs to be able to stand up to this bully (and all the others).

SapphireSphinx@feddit.org · 29 pts · 228d (8 replies)

'eu can’t push back on the us because we need them

The question is: For what do we need them?

They certainly will not respect Article 5 of the NATO treaty. They do not respect the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark. They will use any(!) leverage they have against us, no matter what we do. What do we get for playing nice? Nothing! If I look at Starmer, Merz, Kallas, ...., it looks like Chamberlain 2.0 and we know from experience that this will not work.

Maybe we buy some time but I do not see attempts to end the dependency. All I see is the hope that everything will be ok once Trump is gone. I doubt it.

IsoKiero@sopuli.xyz · 12 pts · 227d (6 replies)

The question is: For what do we need them?

For everyday life mostly payment processors and IT infrastructure. For both of them there's some change in the plans, but it's painfully slow and with the orange toddler it's a reasonable threat to assume that those might vanish from EU overnight if there's even moderate push for any change which he doesn't like.

Then there's obviously international trade, support for sanctions against Russia, support for Ukraine (whatever's left of it) and a ton of other things, but specially Visa and Mastercard are pretty important part of everyday life for Joe Averages around Europe.

LwL@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 227d (3 replies)

One word: gmail

Imagine the absolute IT and everyday life apocalypse if all european gmail users were no longer able to view their mails.

Outside of the usual, this possibility was the main push for me to migrate away from gmail.

IsoKiero@sopuli.xyz · 8 pts · 227d (2 replies)

At least in here Microsoft cloud going out would be a order of magnitude bigger issue than any Google service. Also it's just not email/instant messaging, a ton of infrastructure on companies, financial and government, are dependent on AWS or Azure. Our team (and many others) could spin up replacement services relatively fast for basic email/file sharing/instant messaging but everything beyond that would be absolute pain in the rear.

LwL@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 227d (1 reply)

I'd imagine gmail would fuck with the average person more (which would then overload every company with support requests though), while microsoft services would screw the corporations. Didn't even think about how bad that would be.

Overall we're just completely fucked when it comes to IT infrastructure if the US really wants us to be.

IsoKiero@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 227d

On a personal level that would be worse (in general, I personally don't use gmail/hotmail/outlook..), I agree. But in here governments, healthcare, insurance companies, banks and pretty much everything relies on US based tech at least somewhat, so all of that going away tomorrow would grind nearly the whole society down to a halt.

Cethin@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 227d

For Ukraine support, the US isn't providing any directly I don't think. IIRC, the US has stopped all support but allows the sale of weapons to send to Ukraine. That's still useful, as Europe can only manufacture so much, but we aren't providing any funding anymore.

huppakee@piefed.social · 1 pts · 227d

No sure, did not meant that the eu legally can't but indirectly is forced to stay because of the consequences.

Those consequences wouldn't only be military, the eu is fucked across the board if we say goodbye to our 'ally'.

Edit to clarify: i'm writing 'eu' but i guess it'd be factually better if i wrote 'the other nato-members'.

redlemace@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 228d (1 reply)

Well nato membership isn't an eu thing. It's up to induvidual countries.

And they can leave, an exit protocol exists. More likely they mean "we are not ready to accept the implications of leaving"

The us thing is probably the dependancy of us produced weaponry

The British kingdoms then go to Ireland, with the exception of Scotland, which goes to Bavaria because of cultural similarities.

The US is going to take Greenland. As global warming rolls on, mineral extraction becomes easier and more profitable, and Arctic sea lanes will open year-round. If you were playing Risk, taking Greenland would be a no-brainer.

theacharnian@lemmy.ca · 8 pts · 227d (1 reply)

That's exactly the problem of having to report what a crazy but ridiculously powerful person is saying. If you don't take him seriously and just report that he's just rambling incoherently then you're going to be surprised when he actually uses his immense power. If you present his ramblings as a coherent declaration then you're going to be discredited when he doesn't follow through.

There is no easy answer here. I'm leaning towards the side that takes his sayings at face value because he's too powerful not to.

By the way, it's way less productive to direct your anger towards the journalists trying to make sense of what the madman is saying.

Omgpwnies@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 227d

Also considering he does occasionally follow through on some of his ramblings and it's quite apparent that the government apparatus will happily follow his orders (even if they shouldn't), the prudent thing to do is report on them as though he's serious about it.

andxz@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 227d

Everyone with the capability to do so already understands that he simply regurgitates whatever shit someone manipulated him to say before the interview. That is when he's coherent enough to make himself understood which frequently isn't the case anymore. His dementia is already fairly advanced and it is going to accelerate even harder in the future. He's sleeping standing up during official meetings, for fuck's sake.

tl;dr: he's not capable of making much sense anymore. The true power lurks behind him, we all know that.

thorhop@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 227d

Even hotter take: those thousands of pages may contain evidence of pedophelia, sex trafficking and abuse - but it is most likely a misdirect because the estate either wouldn't release the blackmail material Epstein had on politicians of the world - large scale political crimes that would have them prosecuted in their own country - or couldn't, because Epstein kept that under tight wrap.

And a molten lava take: the CIA was thr ones who offed Epstein so that Trump would never get access to that material, because then he'd have the same leverage Putin has over Russian politicians and elites, meaning he would have had a much higher chance of taking over the entire country - and they did it out of self preservation for themselves and not for liberty of US citizens.

But also: Venezuela is a distraction from the Epstein files, because most Americans agree that it is disgusting and the perpetrators should face justice. Now Greenland and Colombia is up to bat, because quoteth Trump:

"You shouldn't be focusing on the Epstein files, but Venezuela, Russia and Ukraine - we'll talk about Greenland in a couple of weeks" - which is something he said recently in an interview.

But, still: I'd like to personally thank the CIA for preventing a Putin 2.0: the Trumpeting, but also: Trump and everyone else in the released files should be tried and face justice.

Now if you'll excuse me, this tea is making me feel queezy and I've been shedding hair more than usual lately - heck, I even shredded some skin. That's normal for my age, right?

It's people like these that stop humanity from ever evolving past meaningless wars and eternal petty garbage. Trump, Putin, Xi and others are the reason why humanity can't have good things.

Trump has forever tarnished the USA as a beacon of freedom and democracy. I'm hopeful the american people will see this eventually, but history contradicts that hope.

We need to stop allowing psychopaths and narcissists from getting any power whatsoever

We have a list of requirements if you want to become a fireman. If you want to become a lawyer, it's a protected job that not anyone can do, you must pass the bar and whatnot to be able to call yourself one

Want to become a politician and make the rules? Suddenly there are no rules nor requirements, any idiot is welcome. WTF?

If you were born with, say, a deformed hand, we don't let you become a fireman because you need your arms

If you're born without the ability to feel empathy for others, or literally can only care about yourself, or are incapable or stopping with lying, then apparently you're perfect for the type of job where you make rules for others and have to decide what happens to others. WTF?

Stop psychopaths and narcissists from becoming politicians, have a law against it

Isnt xi, though a dictator, the smartest one among them, who is also trying to push technological advancements and at least trying to solve eco issues? Best of trio

CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org · 3 pts · 226d (11 replies)

I'm not sure if he's smarter than Putin, but I guess if I had to hang out with one of them, it would be Xi.

liuther9@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 226d (10 replies)

I can not understand why you doubt it

CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org · 2 pts · 226d (9 replies)

Putin isn't dumb? He underestimated how Europe and Ukraine would handle his invasion, but domestically he's proven plenty adept at doing the job of kleptocrat.

Xi was also a nepobaby, for what it's worth. Putin's life trajectory involved more good luck at the very least, if not actual competence.

despite_velasquez@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 226d (4 replies)

Did he? I'm not by any stretch a Putin supporter, yet I fail to see how he's not 1) strengthening his support at home, and 2) winning the war of attrition in Ukraine

CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org · 2 pts · 226d (3 replies)

He's pretty quickly running out of economy to fund the war. It's very very expensive to pay people who don't care about your war to die for it, and revenues have not gone up. Their industrial production is a joke and they've actually burned through the Soviet doomsday stockpiles. The original goal was to take Kiev immediately, watch as Europe does nothing a but write a strongly worded letter, and then move on to the Baltics. If there's no deal keep an eye on the value of the ruble.

Meanwhile, Ukraine still hasn't expanded conscription to under-25s, and still has access to bottomless Western supplies.

I'm also not sure how Putin's domestic support is stronger than before. Fighting Ukraine is seen domestically in Russia a lot like fighting Canada would be in the US - nobody really wants to do that. Increasing both handouts and enforcement against dissidents has been a real priority for him, as a result.

despite_velasquez@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 225d

Is that true? Im not arguing that the Russian economy is booming, but diversifying to export crude to China India and Turkey is helping the wartime economy trundle along in the war of attrition.

The Muscovite elites probably don't care about the war as long as it's not impacting them too much, these are not the people sent to the front lines.

Idk, I've heard for 4 years now that the Russian economy is about to collapse any second now, and the opposite seems to have happened. I fear this is a miscalculation from the Western allies

liuther9@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 226d

Nepobaby word really became popular recently, isnt it? Xi has better education, better in science, politics, shows better results economically ecologically. Better country in r and d. People in China live better than in Russia. Putin is just a thug who is lucky to be in right place right time.

Allero@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 226d

It's also plenty of people that support them. Some folks just like to watch the world burn.

What saddens me is that somehow the idea of uniting and flourishing together is not universally accepted as good. Some people always want more for themselves, and it's often easy to manipulate them into identifying themselves and the nation, the nation and its leaders. To them, Trump or Putin or Xi getting another ambition played feels like personal victory. In fact, it's rather everybody's loss.

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 226d

Trump, Putin, Xi and others are the reason why humanity can't have good things.

Also, the "good" people who believe that remaining polite and non-confrontational is the best way to appease bullies, because it has ALWAYS worked so well on the past. They are the ones who determine that sometimes maniacs become so psychopathic, that we are better off letting them do whatever they want, because ultimately it might be slightly less lethal to millions of people.

Or you could keep those people away from the leadership of your nation in the first place, but that wouldn't be polite. Everybody deserves a turn at the steering wheel, even if they are suicidal.

SnarkoPolo@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 226d (1 reply)

It is his typical "If I set a deadline sometime in the near future, then they will probably stop talking about it because they will have forgotten about it, just like I will have forgotten about it". He did it with his healthcare plan, his plan for eradicating ISIS and so forth.

I wish journalists would stop asking him about Greenland, because it only serves to remind him about it, and make him aware it is something which makes people talk about him, which really turns him on as a pathological narcissist. If they stopped asking him about it, he would stop talking about it and forget it in those 20 days to 2 months.

A_norny_mousse@feddit.org · 6 pts · 228d

I wish journalists would stop asking him about Greenland, because it only serves to remind him about it

Half right. The above blurb clearly states that he started talking about it:

President Donald Trump has said the U.S. will revisit its stance on Greenland in the coming weeks.

Asked if he expected to take action on the territory

Yet the journalist couldn't resist egging him on, and yeah, I resent that. He must be such an easy target for journalists: prod him, you always get a controversial quote. And that's a big part of what got him into & keeps him in power.

phoenixz@lemmy.ca · 21 pts · 226d (2 replies)

A related question I have: Was the US ever (publicly) interested in "acquiring" Greenland before Trump? His comments are the first of the sort I ever noticed, but I could imagine the idea having a longer tradition.

Rothe@piefed.social · 18 pts · 228d (1 reply)

They were literally offered Greenland by the Danish ambassodor during WWII, and could have kept it after the war, but chose to hand it back. So no, the purposes of the US with Greenland has been served perfectly fine with the previous diplomatic arrangements they have had.

There is no sense to this other than Trump sees how big and beautiful it looks on a map in the same colour as the US territory.

Trump has flouted the idea in 2019 already, and there is some history. But just to be clear, the mere fact that the USA have expressed interest in Greenland one way or another over the centuries does of course not legitimize that interest! And afaics there's nothing more to it. Just "interest" a.k.a. greed, expansionism, imperialism.

Bonifratz@piefed.zip · 2 pts · 227d

Thanks, very interesting. I think I had read about the US occupying Greenland during WWII (defensively), but not about the buy offers.

And yes, obviously nothing legitimises these threats. I was just interested to see whether Trump came up with it or whether it has some history in US political circles, which it appears it does.

Nangijala@feddit.dk · 5 pts · 227d

I remember George W Bush talking about buying Greenland from us back in the 2000s. We thought he was a crazy bastard but I actually miss Bush. He was the fun kind of incompetent.

Before that there was a very embarrassing moment in time during the 50s where the US illegally used Greenland for nuclear experiments and left the nuclear waste on Greenland and pissed on us when our government tried to get them to take responsibility for the clean up. I see that as an invasion too, but it was kept hush hush for years. It's still a problem now that the ice is melting.

We’ll worry about Greenland in about two months. Let’s talk about Greenland in 20 days.

60 days = 20 days. Got it.

We need Greenland from a national security situation. It’s so strategic.

Much strategic. So situation.

I've thinking a lot this past year about John Oliver's segment on how this loon is undeniably, comically stupid, but that he's equally dangerous, and the former often seriously undercuts the latter. He sounds like he's having a stroke most of the time, sure, but I keep wondering how long it will take for leaders to figure out that they need to take his gibberish seriously. Maybe the latest abduction of a world leader will clue them in.
