If a cloud server becomes the only way to play the newest releases, I'm never playing the newest releases again. That's fine. There are more games between 1980 and 2025 than I have years of life available to play.
If you can't build a desktop and must rent an Amazon computing instance, I'm not doing computing anymore. That's fine, people lived for thousands of years without computers, I don't need computers to eat.
Playstation Plus was the last streaming service I used. The titles were garbage and so was the quality. I don't know why I ever bothered when I've got thousands of games archived locally. I'll go back to dumpster diving office PCs before I ever use a virtual instance again.
This is me with everything right now because of AI. There is a thousand of books, music, videogames, comics, movies that are before 2020 that I haven't read, listen, play and so on.
I continue to use GamePass because you can download the games to your console, but if/when they go fully cloud-only, I’m out. That will be the death knell for mainstream consoles for me. I’ll stick to my Steam Deck and modded classic consoles.
If cloud gaming is all that's available, read books, go for walks, hang out with friends instead. Do what we did before the internet. Do not let them win, stop using it.
I said the same for Amazon (personally ordered 1 item from Amazon, received maybe 5 items from Amazon as gifts, I otherwise do not use them but I am 1 insignificant point well outside the graph) and expect the same results
Certain hobbies just aren't supported locally anymore. And if they are they're at ridiculously inflated prices. I always check nearby first but 90% of the time I end up ordering online. Half the time when I do, the place I order from charges 10-15 dollars for shipping, or redirects to Amazon to complete the order anyway.
I put a lot of work in to not using Amazon, and frequently find myself with little else in the way of choice. I fucking hate it.
I feel you there. I have said this from the beginning but everyone said I was overreacting and here we are, and they are in it up to their eyeballs. Even my gf orders a ton from there, thankfully I have few needs and am a bad capitalist

Cynic opinion: Once it becomes bad enough the sheeple get punished by the market until they eventually run out of money... the rest of us has most probably a mountain of already bought yet unplayed games at their hard drive.
So there remains a market for that content, just like there is a giant market for free low effort mobile games with micro transactions.
Can still seek out and reward passionate projects that clearly actually care about their output. Those projects may not get the same obscene revenue, but they frequently get a viable amount and consistently get recognition for just how well done they are.
A lot of console games won't let you play, even offline unless you sign in to Activision/Epic/whatever.
And then yeah, a lot of them are broken on day 0.
So yeah, so much for the joys of physical media.
Not to mention how careful you have to be when actually buying the games...if you aren't paying attention, it's easy to buy a case with boxart and a voucher inside.
Gamepass was a good value for me, because I rarely replay games and usually only am playing one game at a time. But since they jacked up the price a couple months ago, it's no longer worth it.
Much better just to watch dekudeals for sales and get games cheap when I feel like playing.
Can run on a tiny computer, all your games and saved on local disk, compatible with retro achievements org, save state hotkeys, use basically any USB controller, etc. I use it more than any modern console I've bought in years.
Imagine accessing your own PC remotely from a different machine like tech support does occasionally but instead of fixing stuff you do it to play games. That way you can use your gaming rig in another room or on the go without physically moving it as long as you have fast internet on both ends.
Depending on how you feel, you might want to consider having a talk with select people. Like if you didn't want to let somebody go and thought maybe they felt the same. All relationships are still relationships, after all, and can be navigated roughly the same ways, within reason, obviously.
If you're afraid to reach out and say something like "hey I'm worried we're drifting apart", consider that sometimes people who have kids and families do still want friends, they just lose track of time or focus, and can end up feeling lonely or whatever. Sometimes they just legit stop caring too, though, so, there's also that.
I've lost a few friends in my life, sometimes I've had mutual desires to it not happen, but we both just... Lived too far away and grew into different people. And, I can only put in so much effort when my messages or texts stop getting returned before I feel like maybe I'm bugging them and the ball is (maybe forever) in their court.
every few months I go through my list of friends and harass them all through whatever means of communication I last knew that I could contact them. Just to make sure they're alive, you know.
My biggest regret is going with 32 of instead of 64GB of DDR5, when I built a new Ryzen 7000 PC in 2022 to replace my aging 4th gen i5.
But what I don't regret is ignoring everyone telling me not to do all sorts of unspeakable things to snag a $1600 4090 at launch, especially given that it was never sold that cheaply ever again. It's a beast of a card and I'll easily get a decade of gaming out of it. Saw 4090s going for over $3K used on eBay lately, so yeah I'm happy with making what was a dumb decision at the time.
It's been over 3 years now and I haven't had a single issue. I made sure to plug in the 12VHPR cable all the way and avoid bending it. I also made sure to buy a top tier PCIe 5 PSU.
The issue was vastly blown out of proportion. Don't be an idiot and you have nothing to worry about.
There's a couple of nice safeguards you can buy for your 12VHPWR connection now. There's even load balancers. I just wouldn't leave my PC on and unattended with one of the new cards.
There's more old, retro and indie games out there than you could ever finish. If the situation will get worse people will start sharing install files on offline media like decades ago with movies. Don't worry, it's going to be great.
My backlog is so large that it would take forever to get through. I have no need to upgrade my setup to play more modem games.
Some new consoles don't offer physical media anymore, and some games aren't able to be played without an Internet connection and a yearly account charge? I just won't play them, then.
If you're only option is to give in to big corpos, then don't do it. Go replay a classic game, relive a world you haven't touched in years. Mass effect, dragon age, halo, skyrim, think of all the old games completely playable on a 360 now that you probably haven't touched in years. Go back to them instead of giving in.
IMO the only thing the cloud is useful for in this context is maintaining and syncing saves. Other than that I want my games running locally, thank you.
Charge more for the service whenever they feel like it.
You have to subscribe to each gaming service separately if you want access to their games. Just like Netflix or Prime Video, except there’s no way to sail the high seas for these games as they’ll all be cloud based.
Unbundle your access – you now get unlimited hours for one game or pay more for all games with top tier, pay for every DLC unless you pay for top tier, etc.
Pay for skins, upgrades, mods, your “own” server, the ability to record yourself playing for your social media, voice chat…
Pay for top tier lobbies so you load in faster.
Pay for the best maps.
And of course the service will enshittify. Dropped and slow connections, shittier game quality, glitches and exploits go unpatched, etc.
The ability to exploit and extort gamers is almost endless once they take away our PCs and consoles.
I tried cloud gaming briefly and gave up immediately.
Fuck having to wait in a queue to play your games.
I spent more time trying to figure out how to stream from my own gaming PC (to my TV) and it couldn't do it. How can you make a device that can stream games from a random PC but not one in the same room? Ah purposeful design to prevent that. Fuckers.
Go back to old consoles like I’ve been doing. I’m in the process of modding a PS2, and I’ve got a 3DS that is on Pretendo Network and has a fuckload of games installed on an SD card.
Edit: forgot to mention that I also recently threw my old BD burner into an external case. So now I can archive stuff to DVD like we did back in the day. I’ve been really leaning into reviving old tech.
Any noticeable latency and I won't even give something a chance to try it. Needing to send my inputs over the internet, wait for them to get processed, and then have the video output streamed back to my local setup means even a small amount of latency. 40ms (which is what I expect for my connection in online gaming servers) would kill the experience of many games, especially rhythm games or other high-reflex games like the entire fighting game genre. Some stuff like Turn Based RPGs could possibly benefit from cloud gaming for users with underperforming hardware, but that's it. Strong No Thanks F*** Off from me when it comes to cloud gaming.
Back in the early 2010s there was this cloud gaming service called OnLive which I thought was actually pretty neat. I played a couple action games and there wasnt really any noticeable latency. Idk what kind of wizardry they use but for most games they can probably make it work.
Of course rhythm games and fighting games specifically will probably never be playable through streaming, but those are basically unplayable at anything but the highest possible performance.
Cloud gaming really needs a wired connection. It might work well on a flawless wireless connection (well tuned, minimal clients, no co-channel interference)... but those are exceedingly rare.
People who cloud game feed the decline. It's also funny that they end up paying more on the whole while also giving them access to more metrics and personal data on your habits they can profit off of.
Okay people are going to hate me for this, but I like cloud gaming when I have it. Play a couple of games I'd never buy and move on with my life. No download times, etc.
If it's a game I want I'll buy it to keep if it does ever go offline or I chose to end my gamepass subscription.
Frankly the only thing that keeps me from using it more is the ridiculous price of game pass these days. It's basically moved me away from Xbox/Microsoft entirely. And that's why after this Xbox one dies I'm not buying from them again.
But without the price gouging, I really like cloud gaming. Truthfully I haven't come across many games that you can't buy a copy for. Some smaller games are digital only and of course the dlc, but this is a decade old issue unrelated to cloud gaming
You're talking about two different things though: game subscription and cloud gaming. Game subscription is what allows you to access tons of games by paying fees monthly/yearly. Cloud gaming on the other hand, is playing games without them installed so you don't need to download them. Xbox Game Pass just happened to include both of these in their plans.
Theoretically, you could find a subscription plan that does not include cloud gaming, so you would have access to the library, but you need to download the games to play.
I'm writing this because while you obviously need to pay for a subscription, you could actually set up your own cloud for free (check out Moonlight and Steam Link). You download the game on the PC, start the streaming software and you can play those games on your other devices, like a laptop or even a phone!
I think for the average person these things are synonymous. If you want to cloud stream you pay for a subscription, or at least the way I described it.
Does a subscription service like that exist though?
Anyway yes you could set it up that way, you are correct. But the vast majority of people will not do that, and for me downloading it on a separate piece of hardware kinda ruins the convince aspect I enjoy.
It's kinda like wanting better beef and deciding to raise a cow instead. Like yes that will give you the best quality, but the time investment is much greater. Obviously this analogy is over scaled, so adjust it down a bit. Point is the average consumer isn't going to raise the cow
There is no ethical consumption under capitalism. Guilting me for enjoying a game in my off time is not productive. I also wouldn't do the same to you. That's ridiculous.
I could go to work, eat, sleep, and nothing else. I could carry a single hand crank lantern room to room, and it wouldn't even come close to mitigating the damage done by exxon just this year alone.

The second half Yea but there is nothing wrong with cloud Gaming as an idea itself Which is why people Like Sunshine/moonshine or whatever its called
PineRune@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 205d
Any noticeable latency and I won't even give something a chance to try it. Needing to send my inputs over the internet, wait for them to get processed, and then have the video output streamed back to my local setup means even a small amount of latency. 40ms (which is what I expect for my connection in online gaming servers) would kill the experience of many games, especially rhythm games or other high-reflex games like the entire fighting game genre. Some stuff like Turn Based RPGs could possibly benefit from cloud gaming for users with underperforming hardware, but that's it. Strong
No ThanksF*** Off from me when it comes to cloud gaming.Urist@leminal.space · 4 pts · 205d
Back in the early 2010s there was this cloud gaming service called OnLive which I thought was actually pretty neat. I played a couple action games and there wasnt really any noticeable latency. Idk what kind of wizardry they use but for most games they can probably make it work.
Of course rhythm games and fighting games specifically will probably never be playable through streaming, but those are basically unplayable at anything but the highest possible performance.
brucethemoose@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 205d
It’s way more latency than you noticed, but it depends on the genre.
Age of Wonders or Civ, those work alright. Asseto Corsa or some brawler? Ehhh. Maybe playable, but it would hurt unless that’s all you knew.
JasonDJ@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 205d
It also depends, a lot, on the connectivity.
Cloud gaming really needs a wired connection. It might work well on a flawless wireless connection (well tuned, minimal clients, no co-channel interference)... but those are exceedingly rare.

Dont do it then?
chunes@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 205d
This doesn't follow. Even a thin client will have enough RAM to provide more gaming entertainment than you could possibly enjoy in a lifetime.

That’s the trade-off right there 😅 Convenience is great, but owning your games just hits different when servers go down or licenses change.

CarrieForle@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 203d
You download the game on the PC, start the streaming software and you can play those games on your other devices, like a laptop or even a phone!
arrow74@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 203d
NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 205d
Yup, streaming your games is great for the environment too...oh, wait, no it's not. Just ignore that part.
arrow74@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 205d
There is no ethical consumption under capitalism. Guilting me for enjoying a game in my off time is not productive. I also wouldn't do the same to you. That's ridiculous.
I could go to work, eat, sleep, and nothing else. I could carry a single hand crank lantern room to room, and it wouldn't even come close to mitigating the damage done by exxon just this year alone.
