Something... something... History rhymes. My country is so fucking stupid:

chahn.chris@piefed.social · 119 pts · 165d (30 replies)

No kidding, my entire life all I’ve seen is republican presidents take us into stupid ass wars.

Why does anybody believe any of these people when they say they want to keep us out of wars?

Ohmmy@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 13 pts · 164d (1 reply)

They've dragged the US government into 38 trillion dollars in dept dropping nearly a trillion dollars a year into the military industrial complex without an ability to pass an audit. Soon the largest expenditure in the US federal discretionary budget will be paying interest on on debts taken to feed that beast. But forgiving student loans and providing healthcare... we can't afford that.

chahn.chris@piefed.social · 9 pts · 164d

Yea dude, the we can’t afford healthcare is an ubsolute lie.

They want to keep us dependent on working for healthcare because they want their slave population to stay quiet.

At some point if people want healthcare or anything else they are frankly entitled to people need to rise up and fight for it.

DaMummy@hilariouschaos.com · -24 pts · 165d (27 replies)

Did you believe Obama when he said he'd get us out of Iraq/Afghanistan and close Guantanamo Bay? My only sympathy lies is me believing the same shit.

Fishnoodle@lemmy.world · 45 pts · 165d (24 replies)

Obama tried to follow the Constitution, and Republicans used every opportunity to disrupt, derail, and corrupt his good faith agenda and policy proposals. I remember distinctly

3abas@lemmy.world · -6 pts · 165d (4 replies)

And his drone strikes? Was he following the constitution in good faith?

How about his unconstitutional "intervention" in Libya to topple Gaddafi?

Liberals love wars, they just keep it quiet.

Downvote and run away, war loving liberal. As long as it's not Americans getting blown up, you don't give a fuck.

AA5B@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 164d

Bs, not more “both sides same”

agent_nycto@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 164d

Man if liberals love war the conservative administration really loves war

phutatorius@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 163d

And his drone strikes? Was he following the constitution in good faith?

Show me where the Constitution says anything about how to handle US citizens who become enemy combatants adhering to non-state organizations waging war against the US.

Obama tried to come up with an orderly procedure for making decisions in those cases, consistent with the Constitution and international treaties such as the Geneva Convention (which tallks about armed non-uniformed irregulars, but doesn't say much about them, and assumes the states they operate in have the capacity to deal with them as bandits, which is not always true).

And the idea that drones are somehow worse than any other method of blowing people to kingdom come is also irrational.

Fishnoodle@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 162d

Who was it that toppled Gaddafi? From what I recall it was an angry mob of libyans.

Also Bush set the precedent for ordering drone strikes. Obama just did what Democrats do, and used the tool in a more effective manner.

It's one thing to inherit a bullshit war, and do your best to end\win it.

Starting a war with an enemy nation (Isreal), that has no actual objective or win scenario, and tanking the economy in the process to try and distract from all the children your raped is entirely different. It's also the Republican party platform.

Republicans are the guy that sucker punches someone, then when that person turns around and whoops their ass, Republicans will immediately claim that it wasn't fair, or that their victim 'cheated'. It's common bitch baby behavior, which is the only thing you can expect from right wing MAGAts

DaMummy@hilariouschaos.com · -9 pts · 165d (18 replies)

If a war is started unconstitutionaly, and if an unconstitutional government torture program is started, it can be closed and ended without a constitution. Don't use the "poor 'ole Democrat" excuse to accept wars and torture. Unless it was the Parliamentarian. Well that one rules above all.

agent_nycto@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 165d (15 replies)

You're doing the false equivalency fallacy by bringing Obama into this though. Sure Democrats and Republicans are both bad, but trying to say they are equally bad isn't true.

DaMummy@hilariouschaos.com · -9 pts · 165d (14 replies)

Obama started 5 wars in middle east, dropped more bombs than GWB. I constantly hear that Trump increased drone strikes like 430% his first year the first term. Obama increased them about 1000% compared to GWB. People complain about the Trump deportations. Yet Obama was the Deporter in Chief, and both Obama and Biden deported more immigrants than Trump. People complain about the immigrant detention centers under Trump, and as Trump asked Clinton wisely who built the cages the immigrant children were being put into, it was Obama. During Trumps first term, when he had a State of the Union, the one time Democrats stood up and cheered was when Trump introduced Juan Guaidó. When it comes to wars(especially regime change wars) and immigration, Republicans and Democrats very much agree, and the only way they wouldn't be equel, is if you consider that Obama deported more and dropped more bombs.

agent_nycto@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 165d

Yeeeah Trump is still worse than Obama. And I don't think he's "wisely" asked a question in his life.

phutatorius@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 163d

Obama increased them about 1000% compared to GWB.

Drones weren't a thing under GWB.

Theoriginalthon@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 163d (1 reply)

That like jumping out of a aeroplane then 3 seconds later deciding to quit jumping out of an aeroplane, war doesn't work like that, sometimes unfortunately you have to accept the past actions and continue down the path and hopefully change the outcome in a positive way, see the Donald trump pull out of Afghanistan, the Taliban are now literally armed with US weapons, equipment and full control over the country

DaMummy@hilariouschaos.com · 1 pts · 163d

"Those are crimes of the past. We have to look to the future" and it was Biden that pulled out of Afghanistan. I do support that though. There was no good way to get out. It was a band aid that had to be ripped off.

SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world · 27 pts · 165d (1 reply)

You're right Obama is as bad as Trump so we should all vote Jill Stein than sniff our own farts like they don't stink anymore.

CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 165d

LOL, so true. I often laugh about the "tea party" and how it's not really a thing, and then I'm immediately reminded of how the "Green Party" is not much more of a serious thing, either. Other than being seriously used to monkey-wrench this country and give more power to Republicans...

UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world · -49 pts · 165d (9 replies)

We won't be sending in ground troops this time. So there can't possibly be a quagmire like we had in Iraq or Afghanistan. And Trump promised money to any ship that gets attacked in the Straight of Hormuz (which I'm more than confident that he's good for) so trade will pick back up again as soon as the smoke clears.

Honestly, I think he did a heck of a job and I'm excited to see what kind of incredible progress he can achieve for American foreign policy in Cuba next.

zd9@lemmy.world · 27 pts · 165d (2 replies)

His goal is to foment Iranian terrorist cells to attack on US soil, thus giving the pretext this regime was looking for to institute martial law or cancel midterms all together.

Also his other goal was to do anything Israel wanted so they don't release all the kompromat of Trump raping children.

Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 163d (1 reply)

It doesn't need to be an Iranian terrorist attack. It just needs to look like one.

zd9@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 163d

True, but it would be much better if the Iranian regime just attacked themselves, then the American regime wouldn't have to pile on even more lies.

Straight outta Putin's playbook, with the Chechen terrorist attacks, that somehow used a very specific material that only Russian military would have access to and then the FSB confiscated all evidence and never investigated it again.

The Party said that Oceania had never been in alliance with Eurasia. He, Winston Smith, knew that Oceania had been in alliance with Eurasia as short a time as four years ago. But where did that knowledge exist? Only in his own consciousness, which in any case must soon be annihilated. And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed -if all records told the same tale -- then the lie passed into history and became truth. 'Who controls the past,' ran the Party slogan, 'controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.' And yet the past, though of its nature alterable, never had been altered. Whatever was true now was true from everlasting to everlasting. It was quite simple. All that was needed was an unending series of victories over your own memory. 'Reality control', they called it: in Newspeak, 'doublethink'

Patrikvo@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 164d

somehow

I mean, they did just kill his dad.

humanspiral@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 165d (2 replies)

There is zero economic rationale for nukes, especially when you have sunny place and China as a friend. An easy offramp is to sell any nuclear material to highest bidder, with US invited to bid. Only justification of nuclear energy is scientist control and military purposes. True even in China with reasonable power prices.

The hard line reputation is more about Iran sovereignty absolutism. His father made a mistake to hope for US/Europe reasonableness/raprochement. IRGC resisted Chinese support, for more control over people. New leader doesn't mean any predictable outcome, but may be open to understanding previous mistakes.

electric_nan@lemmy.ml · 6 pts · 165d (1 reply)

Economic, no, but you'd have to be out of your mind to not see the security rationale for obtaining nuclear weapons if you were Iran.

humanspiral@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 165d

My point was that nuclear energy is not economic from selling energy perspective. I agree that it was idiotic mistake for Iran to pretend to pursue economic/peaceful nuclear energy. Still, if it can sell enriched uranium at high profit, that is easy path to peace.

fizzle@quokk.au · 9 pts · 165d (3 replies)

A really salient point. What is the purported reason for this war?

As a not-american im really, really sick of this shit. Im on the other side of the world, we have a stable democracy and elected a centre left government.

Yet, fuel prices have jumped, inflation to follow, and yesterday I learned that fuel shortages are a very real possibility.
