There’s unfortunately very little airline staff can do to stop this.
Bullshit. The flight attendants and especially captains’ word is law on a plane. They say stop and they don’t they can and should absolutely charge them with disobeying the instructions of airline staff (something we see all the time) and blacklist them.
I think the reverse can be true if footage is filmed by other onlookers which then is uploaded to social media for influencers to break down what happened.
The dude in a Target making a scene about the Satanic pride wear (the artist drew some devils in unrelated work) was pretty much a flop.
And why would one care? If I made it on Fox News for shutting down a cultist it'd be a mark of pride. The airline itself may suspend you with pay until it blows over in a week but firing or reprimanding someone for shutting down a nut job like that would blow up in the airlines face.
I suppose that depends on how much you value your life and your loved ones. All it took was Alex Jones shouting a bunch and people who lost the lives of their children literally received death threats over it.
In any reasonable world it wouldn't be a big deal, but there's a lot of dangerous fruit cakes on the right wing these days.
When I view right-wing outrage, it's so often blatantly wrong (and doesn't pass a simple factcheck) that I used to just believe that they were incompetent. (And some of the arguments they make do show they can't logic).
Then I realized that they doing what biblical scholar Dan McClellan calls costly virtue signalling. The social media post isn't for outsiders, but insiders to signal to each other that they are of the body and belong to the same cult.
The affordability crisis is a Democrat hoax is the same signal as They're eating the dogs which is the same as blood libel, and it doesn't matter whether or not any of them are true. In fact, the subject of these statements are to point out targets for those MAGA members who are looking to express their loyalty with violence.
Is Matthew relevant for the average American Christian Conservative? As far as I can remember, he's the main one of the four Evangelists who highlights themes of compassion, care of the neighbour and sheltering of the stranger.
I'm not sure they can explicitly say that a part of the bible doesn't count for them. They can tacitly ignore it, but directly quoting scripture is at least gonna annoy them.
I would be stoked if a Satanist¹ rose up to counter an evangelist like this and was prepared to do so.
¹ Is satanist proper? I know there are different kinds of satanists, from TST folk to LaVeyan Satanists and unlike Christians, have very little to do with each other.
In America, yes. My truck driver stepfather stopped using his CB because it was incessant preaching or childish fighting 99% of the time. Only turned it on for info on traffic jams he got stuck in, and at customers who used them to tell trucks when they'd been assigned a dock door (back before they finally started calling them instead).
Religion is used to manipulate people and also turn them into sheeple. As America has proven, it's devastatingly effective.
Even without public transit, it's still very common here in the states. There's a handful of street preachers in my city that stand on step ladders at busy intersections with megaphones to preach to people stuck in traffic at rush hour
There's a guy in my town (in the UK) who sometimes stands outside a supermarket near me with a loudspeaker, preaching his gospels, and honestly, I keep wanting to tell him to fuck off.
Why does he think he has the right to amplify himself, to preach hellfire and brimstone at people who are just trying to go about their days. If he just shouted, then fine, whatever, it's a free world. But to use amplification is just cunty.
Couldn't agree more. The imposition and force is what really gets me about these guys. I was raised in the burgeoning evangelical.movement, at what was (on paper) a southern baptist church so these douches aren't saying anything I haven't heard before, but my former church members at least had the sense to keep it to themselves
The transit thing? Yeah I’d get a guy on the DC Metro pretty regularly who would sing a song then say a verse on the morning commute. He’d basically do it in each car of the train.
here most people would look at each other with that "ah, a crazy person" look until they reach someone who tells them to shut the fuck up

Most people are too tired in the morning to give a shit or have headphones on. It made me angry for sure but you would be exposed to him at most 5-10 min. He wasn’t confrontational so no one reciprocated.
The first time it happened freaked me out a bit though because you don’t know if it’s like a suicide bomber or something.
No, no it is not. And anyone telling you it is either 1) is dramatizing the one or two experiences they have over their life 2) live around a person or specific church who are annoying or 3) just lying to you.
My anecdote is I used to see "street preachers" 2-3 times a year. Never talked to any of them. Now I see maybe one a year. But corona threw off the numbers.
"Having a religion is much like having a penis. It's all well and good to have one, and one can even be proud of it. However, when you whip it out in public and bandy it about to my face, we will have problems."
Well, two MAX 8’s crashed due to Boeing’s lies, and they had the temerity to continue lying about it afterwards. Then, the fuckin’ door fell off of a MAX 9 because some overworked tech forgot to install the bolts and every downstream quality check also missed it. Despite this, the evidence shows that they’re still about as statistically safe as “safe” air travel gets.
Southwest’s fleet is mostly MAX airframes now, which makes their routes cheaper. If I want to go anywhere and still have money when (or if) I arrive, it basically means I end up on one of these aircraft now and again. So, personally I’m fine with eating an obnoxious prayer from an overzealous Christ-fluencer just in case my next flight happens to coincide with Boeing’s golden-parachuted C-suites once again betting the farm on their latest venture.
I try to temper my Atheism with the knowledge that I’m always about one in-flight emergency away from taking a verbal leap of faith. That, and whatever keeps the cattle docile while stuffed into an aluminum tube at 40,000 feet is good enough for me. :P
Seems like a good excuse for some repetitive "hail Satan"s. And then be surprised that you can see the demon inside her. Act like it's the worst demon you've ever seen.
The airline has had so many bias incidents when dealing with black passengers that the NAACP issued a travel advisory in 2017, warning black travelers against flying American Airlines.
Fuck that. I'd be the first one to shout "SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!" if someone started preaching on my flight. Stupid arrogant motherfuckers think they can do whatever they want.
I'd be telling the flight attendant that they're clearing suffering from a mental break and preaching before they try to kill people on the plane and themselves, and I feel quite unsafe as a result of a clearly mentally ill person being allowed to carry on so with some crazy pre-hijacking-attempt hype service from their chosen sky person.
right, joke. the polite version is "right now these fucks are my problem but in fifteen seconds if they ain't shut up they are going to be everyone's, including yours and the pilot's. you want to fix this for me?"

I don't like the idea of people thousands of years after my death pretending to know me. You get an echo at best, an image. Jesus is whatever you want him to be because he's not here to prove otherwise.
This is going to sound "I'm very bad ass," but it's usually an easy thing to shut down, I've done it before (not at an airplane, but a bunch of people surrounding me and yelling at me). The dumb ones go silent and the smart one's eyes go dark. I bet anyone here could shut that down in about 20 seconds by not debating, but mentioning the core of the old testament.
You don't have to know the bible, just take a step back and look at it. Look at the time period and what was important to them. Look at what the Catholic church tried/tries to suppress (except for what started in the last couple of hundred years). If you have an interest in Egypt at all, that might be a more fun way for you to find it. Part of this is for the christians to try and shut my argument down, they have to figure this out. The people upvoting me know.
Edit: Also, the people downvoting me know too, ha ha.
Oh, I see, you're just full of shit from the beginning. I see you around and I really need to block or at least tag you before I accidentally waste time reading your comments again
Seems to me the obvious solution is to unplug your headphones. Put the stuggles-with-consent-like-the-rest-of-them fame seeker (how pious) on the defensive and force the airline to make a decision.
I will start spouting old Cult of Nugget talking points from my DayZ RP server days in response.
"Behold, for we embark on this trip in the Nugget's crispy glow. Ye, this vessel is blessed for it is very much like a fry basket, and we are all made in the image of the holy basket. If we fail to reach our destination fear not friends, for we will joint our fellow morsals on the eternal counter of complete orders. All hail the holy Nugget, all glory to the deep fryer which embraces us in it's eternal warmth. Please open your menu's to the brunch section, and let us pray. Oh holy Nugget, I owe you everything. For I was hungry and you gave me a fluffy breaded exterior. My fingies were dry and you gave me oil. My nostrils bored and you gave them aromas. My brain big sad and you gave me an endorphin hit. In Nugget's name we pray. Hooray."
Islam isn't any better or worse than other religious doctrine - bad people use it as justification for evil shit just like they would with Christianity or any other belief system. Good people also use it to do good, though that's entirely debatable depending on the context. I.e. a Christian charity drive in a rural area where the only people benefitting from said charity will be Christian.
A stereotype in the west is the occurrence that some Muslim members commit "Terrorist" acts. That are ideologically driven against those not in their faith. Sometimes unfairly called Terrorist attacks, sometimes unfairly described as something else.
One of those stereotypes being terrorism on planes circa early 2000s.

LostCarcosan@lemmy.today · 7 pts · 7d
Could you quote or at least paraphrase the old testament that shuts them down, for those of us who have not read the bible?

You haven't reached the right power level, gotta give them $9,000 to take the three required courses
pelespirit@sh.itjust.works · -1 pts · 7d
So, are you Christian or nah?
impairedimperator@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 6d
You don't have to know, just take a step back and look! Its pretty obvious
pelespirit@sh.itjust.works · -2 pts · 6d
So yes, lmao. I'll give you a huge hint, Egyptian major dieties are very, very similar to Jewish gods from the old testament.
impairedimperator@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 6d
Yeah, I kinda figured the intentionally mysterious and vague answer was a cover for your own lack of ability.
pelespirit@sh.itjust.works · -4 pts · 7d
You don't have to know the bible, just take a step back and look at it. Look at the time period and what was important to them. Look at what the Catholic church tried/tries to suppress (except for what started in the last couple of hundred years). If you have an interest in Egypt at all, that might be a more fun way for you to find it. Part of this is for the christians to try and shut my argument down, they have to figure this out. The people upvoting me know.
Edit: Also, the people downvoting me know too, ha ha.
Edit 2: This is a really good start https://sh.itjust.works/post/64186397/26616537

Oh, I see, you're just full of shit from the beginning. I see you around and I really need to block or at least tag you before I accidentally waste time reading your comments again

I agree that you should block me, lol. Have a great day.

Could one carefully and quietly piss down the back of their (the preacher's) leg while they're doing this?

Hooray."

I say lean into it. Praise Jesus so loudly and obnoxiously that the preacher themselves asks you to tone it down a notch.

First line "there is now an epidemic of" An Epidemic!? Really? An epidemic. Like so many it's a problem?
I fly a lot, and my whole team for work flies a lot. Never heard of this once.
Also - better than what Islam does.

irish_link@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 6d
What does Islam do?
Jax@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 6d
Islam isn't any better or worse than other religious doctrine - bad people use it as justification for evil shit just like they would with Christianity or any other belief system. Good people also use it to do good, though that's entirely debatable depending on the context. I.e. a Christian charity drive in a rural area where the only people benefitting from said charity will be Christian.
Religion bad.
Edit: I am not the OC

A stereotype in the west is the occurrence that some Muslim members commit "Terrorist" acts. That are ideologically driven against those not in their faith. Sometimes unfairly called Terrorist attacks, sometimes unfairly described as something else.
One of those stereotypes being terrorism on planes circa early 2000s.
