They do spin, but you have to get her just the right kind of dress that puffs out just right and she'll be spinning in no time. Bonus if the dress also had pockets. She'll smile HUGE, put her hands in the pockets, pull the sides of the skirt out and proudly proclaim it has pockets.
I don't know about the rest of the boob havers around here but I quit doing cartwheels the first time my tits hit me hard in the chin doing a cartwheel. Safety consciousness takes some of the whimsy out of it.
My boobs don't do that bc they aren't as big as yours, but with the droopage of my advancing years they might soon. I'm more worried about landing wrong and breaking a hip.
Honestly this. I will hurt myself sleeping with my head tilted 5 degrees the wrong direction. I will 100% hurt myself if my head is near the ground and my legs are in the air.
I am happy to report as a 50+ dude I still do cartwheels on occasion. I've done a few in the last couple months even. If kids are around we just might get in a cartwheel competition. If I'm walking someplace with a long hallway, a cartwheel calls. They always make people happier at a hospital. Do more cartwheels!
There's a maintenance tunnel that runs between a couple of buildings where I work, housing a bunch of pipes for the boiler system. It's probably 15ft wide, about 500ft of smooth concrete, with the two ends angled down towards a drain in the middle.
Every single time I'm in that tunnel, I wish I had a skateboard... I haven't been on a skateboard in 30 years... One day I'm going to break a hip in that tunnel, get fired, and lose my health insurance but it will be awesome, and I'll have the biggest smile on my face the whole time!
I worked with a woman that would do cartwheels sometimes. She was around 30 iirc and mainly did it because people would question her ability to do cartwheels
I’m a middle aged man in poor overall shape but I can still do cartwheels.
I’ve never been able to do a pull up.
Cartwheels don’t require much strength. You aren’t on your arms for very long and don’t actually further extend your arms during the period when they’re touching the ground.
What cartwheels do require is coordination, flexibility, and balance.
… and practice. Lots of practice.
If I had to guess for most people the limiting factor as you age would probably be flexibility.
That’s assuming you knew how to do them when you were young. I learned it in my mid twenties, but would not envy someone trying to learn it in their mid forties or later.
I do actually randomly cartwheel, just to make sure I still can. I'm going on 60. Hopefully will be able to cartwheel for a long time more. It's a funny trick when little kids are doing it and I do one with them, too.
*me climbing up a high ledge as a kid, precariously balancing on the edge of a precipice*
Mum: "GET DOWN FROM THERE NOW! NOWW!"
Dad: *sips beer and says nothing*
A lot of this is just growing and aging. Child bodies are great at flipping and spinning. Adult bodies less so. Older adult bodies break in ways that don't quite heal all the way.
Not just the flexibility, people underestimate the forces an adult body generates by spinning that mass at those distances. A kid couldn't break his own bones, but I could easily break a kid's bones.
Sometimes I jump a little off the last step and hope I can ruin my day in exciting new ways (strangely and not because of the internet at all, but because of beans lately for the most part)
Ok, no reason to call me out specifically. I tried it, okay!? I landed on my face and broke a tooth. I still have trouble being upside down without thinking about that day.
In this scenario are you at the park playing by yourself, or does someone just skip into your living room hop to a stop and ask if they can join you while you scroll Lemmy? Because the second one makes me smile inside... I would laugh if someone did that to me. And my knees woupd crack as I tried to stand up to join them, lol
Maybe they learned more about how gross the ground is. Easier to do it as a kid when you’re not thinking about the amount of dried dog (or human) piss that might be there.

But I’ll get a few more whimsical twirls in when I wear dresses now! Thanks for the inspiration!

Twirls with dresses are full of whimsy and beautiful... please keep it up! It always makes people smile!
I wish I could spin until I was dizzy with kids too, but alas that's been a sure way to get myself sick all my adult years.

When i was a little boy, little girls did cartwheels. Now that I'm a man, little girls still do cartwheels. I don't think anything changed.
pixxelkick@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 31d
The real reason though is simple:
When you are younger, your center of balance is way more core and your arms/legs weigh a lot less.
As you grow your limbs become way heavier.
Think about how easy it is to pick up a 7 year old vs a 30 year old.
Well, when you do a cartwheel, you are also having to move the body of a grown adult, your own body that is.
So its possible if you are very fit, of course.
But for an average person, good luck haha.
General rule of thumb is that a cartwheel is similiar to a pull up.
Remember how easy pull-ups were when you were a kid? Same principle.

And in my case, I can easily do a pull-up but couldn't do a cartwheel to save my life.
mycodesucks@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 31d
It's the lots of practice part
Lots of practice means lots of failure on the way.
Failure to do a cartwheel at 10 means trying again. Failure to do a cartwheel at advanced ages means a week of pain.
