Why is it always the left one?

It’s because you put the case down unevenly and most of the charge sloshed to one side

i woulda believed you if you didn't say 'sloshed'

ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de · 7 pts · 9d (3 replies)

Got a phone more powerful and better than anything Samsung has released, and it has aux. RM 11 pro.

Many phones out there actually have aux and even micro SD slots, still. They just aren't in the US because everyone subsidized their phone purchases through bullshit carrier lock in deals and it's all almost exclusively a handful of Samsung or iPhone for options.

My android phone has aux, an ir blaster, big ass battery, waterproof fan powered cooling, 1TB storage and 24GB of ram. It was just under a grand.

You're buying the wrong phones now I guess

dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 9d (1 reply)

Right here. I love my wired headphones.

There's kind of a catch here that explains why wireless has taken off. A lot of people do not, for whatever reason, respect the integrity of the cable and the strain relief at either end. Wires are this artificial abomination, a means to an end, and something to be contended with rather than cared for. They're stored as a tangled mess, and recovered and un-tangled in a stream of stressed movements and much swearing. The result is broken, bent, crimped, strained, and ultimately broken wires.

Instead, wires must be cared for in specific ways and that is a skill that just isn't taught to everyone. It hurts my soul every time I notice this.

ArfArfWoof@europe.pub · 4 pts · 9d

Nah. Wired headphones are less profitable, so they were artificially obsoleted.

dan1101@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 9d (8 replies)

Getting harder to find phones with a headphone jack.

walden@wetshav.ing · 8 pts · 9d (5 replies)

USB to headphone jack dongle is how I roll. The have actual chips in them so you can get the quality you want.

spicehoarder@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 9d (4 replies)

I will never be satisfied until either, phones come with two USBC ports or a Y shaped dongle is made that lets me charge AND listen.

Mongostein@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 9d (1 reply)

They do exist. I bought one at the gas station, but it buzzes when I have it charging while playing music. :/

REDACTED@infosec.pub · 5 pts · 9d

You're getting charged too

walden@wetshav.ing · 1 pts · 9d (1 reply)

I don't know if it has better than average battery life, but I only need to charge my phone when I'm sleeping. I only charge it to 80%, too. Sure it's better to have a headphone jack, but when life gives you lemons, etc.

spicehoarder@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 9d

Sometimes I wear my headphones to bed :/

ArfArfWoof@europe.pub · 3 pts · 9d (1 reply)

Yeah. Every time a small manufacturer (shift, fairphone) releases a new phone my heart starts beating a bit faster, and then I check the specs and I'm so disappointed.

The big dogs I understand, a few cents per unit saved over a million phones is a lotta dough, but these guys? Damn.

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 9d

And electrically, if they are able to drive speakers, that same signal can drive headphones. It just needs the port.

JadenSmith@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 9d (1 reply)

During Winter months I use my ATH-M50X (wired one I've had for years), however these days it's far too hot for them. I settle for my wireless earbuds, since the over head ones (as much as I prefer their sound) can make my ears get very sweaty very quickly.

walden@wetshav.ing · 2 pts · 9d

They make wired ear buds

Jimbabwe@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 9d (5 replies)

I bought an expensive pair of “nice” headphones for an office job, but didn’t end up using them much. So, I put them back in their storage case and forgot about them. Two(+) years later I needed some for a flight and went to find them, only to discover that the fake shitty pleather cushion bits were peeling and shedding all over creation, despite sitting undisturbed in their case for 99% of their existence!

In short, fuck those. Fuck them. Fuck every pair of over-the-ear headphones with their shitty fucking fakeass material that degrades under the pressure of existing! I’ll never buy another pair from any brand unless they solve this problem (that I’m convinced is planned obsolescence).

sartalon@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 9d

I've had military issues gear do this.

It's a type of foam that does it, it just slowly falls apart over time.

A friend loaned me his ski boots, that he hadn't worn in a couple years, and the internal insulation liner had crumbled.

The Logitech Headset I fucking love is doing this as well. I can replace the pillows, but the liner on the head bar is also peeling.

Some of it is the manufacturer saving money on cheaper materials, some of it is the vender selling shitty materials to the manufacturer because they think lasting 1-2 years is good enough and no one will notice.

Like home developers making super shitty quality homes, knowing they only need to last 10 years, when their warranty runs out.

I spend $140 for a fucking headset, it better last more than a few years.

But to your point, fuck them, it's fucking bullshit.

Gerudo@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 9d

A lot of higher end headphones have replaceable ear cups that even come in different materials. I have seen several that have an option for actual leather cups. I personally prefer fabric vs. pleather or leather if there is an option.

unitedwithme@lemmy.today · 4 pts · 9d (1 reply)

My 8yo headphones finally had this issue after regular use. You got jipped! I figure they only got tore up because of beard stubble.

Ava@piefed.blahaj.zone · 8 pts · 9d

Informationally, "jipped" is often spelled "gypped", as it is associated with the term "gypsy". It shares a discriminatory association with that slur for the Romani people.

Uebercomplicated@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 9d

My Sennheiser HD600 have been basically indestructible for almost 10 years now. Other headphones have had minor issues, but the wired Sennheiser stuff seems to be incredibly well built. Highly recommend.

DaddleDew@lemmy.world · 22 pts · 9d

Likely dirty/corroded charger connecting points that make the charging contact intermittent.

Clean them, scrape off the layer of crust/corrosion with a jewler's screwdriver if you have to. Once they're clean and charge well again, I recommend putting a little dab of dielectric grease to protect them from corroding again.

Mine started doing that a year after I bought them and I was about to throw them away when I tried doing that and it completely fixed it.

nixukty@lemmy.zip · 19 pts · 9d (2 replies)

Fun fact: you probably know that wireless earbuds have a primary/secondary relationship, where the audio source connects to just one earbud, which then relays it to the second. Interestingly, this isn't the case anymore with Bluetooth LE audio, where the phone manages the connection to each earbud independently. even though the phone does more work, it uses less power because the codec is more efficient

SlurpingPus@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 8d

Curiously, I've had a pair of cheap earbuds that I typically used one at a time, putting it in the case when the battery expired and switching to the other. Pretty sure neither the earbuds nor my aging phone support BLE. However, there might've been some shenanigans with the case being a Bluetooth device of its own, presumably relaying to the buds.

VitoRobles@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 8d

I didn't know that! That is a fun fact!

666dollarfootlong@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 9d (5 replies)

Could it be that only one of them connects to the phone, and then connects to the other earbud also, thus using up more power?

iocase@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 9d (4 replies)

That's exactly how they work. Same with a lot of combo keyboard and mouse systems, or split keyboard. One device does double duty so you only need 1 Bluetooth connection.

ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 9d (3 replies)

No that's how they used to work. For quite some time now, BLE wireless has supported them connecting individually (but as a single unit) and the phone streams to them both simultaneously. So there's no primary unit and both can function independently without the other. Cheap ones may still be using the old primary/secondary method IDK.

Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it · 1 pts · 9d (1 reply)

That's sound like a shit ton of battery wasted..., like, yeah now you don't have to trash the earbud if the other one is lost but idk...

SlurpingPus@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 8d

Supposedly Bluetooth Low Energy specifically uses less energy than classic Bluetooth. Both because of the radio and protocol differences, and because of more efficient codecs.

iocase@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 8d

Yeah my experience is with custom split keyboards that still use the old method. Likely because keystrokes are waaaay less power than audio streaming.

Most of the comments here completely miss the fact that difference in the OP appears after charging, not after using. It doesn't matter if one is primary or not, they both had the same amount of time to charge from 0%, so they should be the same.

Nalivai@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 9d (1 reply)

This is if they have the same size battery, which might not be the case if one needs more to work.
Also, the state of charge might be inaccurate, it might report zero on a secondary one if the primary is also down just so you put it both back on charger so they equalise.
Also it might all be bullshit and we're speculating on it randomly.

NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de · 5 pts · 9d

Also it might all be bullshit and we’re speculating on it randomly.

ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net · 6 pts · 9d

I had some simple Huaiway earbuds and they charged without issues. Then I got the Pixel Buds free with my phone and my god they suck. The charging/discharging seems to be completely random (not to mention issues with pairing and terrible fit).

HoneyMustardGas@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 9d (1 reply)

it's always the left ear, why? i want to know too.

LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 9d

It's the primary device, so audio and microphone and such by default go through there. It's been listening for the hey Siri for about 12 hours when the right ear hasn't had too

nullspace@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 9d

Which pocket do you keep your phone in?

pedz@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 9d

Huh. This happens to me in a different way with OpenRun headphones. They don't auto shutdown when disconnected. You have to turn them off because they just stay on until the next time you want to use them.

And then you pick them up a few days later thinking they should be fine, but no, they spent days idling and only have a few minutes of use left.

Malyca@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 9d

I use the left one more than the right, I like keeping one out so I can hear my son properly. Maybe you did that and forgot?

SaltyIceteaMaker@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 9d

reasing this while my case is so empty that my headphones dont even turn on when i take them out, even though they still have charge (i used them just 20 minutes ago)

Doom@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 8d

Likely the "brain" for the pair is on that side and the extra load of doing it's job has worn down the battery's life faster on that side.

Grass@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 9d (1 reply)

yeah but I'll take it over a wired set where one has to have the cord wrapped around my ear in a specific way for sound to come out.

except no because a good enough replacement set was like 20 bucks and high end ones have always had and still do have removable cables.

Uebercomplicated@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 9d

You don't even need higher end ear buds for replaceable cables anymore. Moondrop CHU 2 are 20-25 € and come with a replaceable cable. The DSP version comes with a nice usb-c cable.

Just make sure to get them from an official retailer; Chinese stuff like this often sells returns on Amazon, non-specialized retailers, etc. Hifi retailers like linsoul, Hifigo, Shenzhen audio, are the only ones where you'll reliably get a working product. Otherwise the quality is quite good.

allywilson@lemmy.ml · -3 pts · 9d (12 replies)

This is actually the primary reason I switched from Pixel to iPhone. I was sick and fed up of leaving the house, opening up the pixel buds case and 1 bud not connecting, or having minimal charge, or it just cuts out after a minute of listening to something. Standing in the middle of the street troubleshooting earbuds whilst I just want to listen to something whilst going somewhere was so frustrating. Moved to iphone and airpods - not had an issues since (about 2 years now). Yes I tried different earbuds with my pixel. No, they weren't any better. In-fact I still have some and they work better with my iphone.

I don't go in for fanboism when it comes to tech companies, but the build quality of Samsung and Google is atrocious.

DmMacniel@feddit.org · 8 pts · 9d (11 replies)

couldn't you just... you know... pair your airpods to your pixel; so why ditch your perfectly working phone?

allywilson@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 9d (1 reply)

I had switched to some cheap SoundCore earbuds, still having issues with the pixel, switched to an iphone - no issues. Wanted nice ear buds again, so went with airpods. My original pixel buds were still sometimes not charging, or more importantly 1 would discharge in the case.

DmMacniel@feddit.org · 2 pts · 9d

Oh I see.

sem@piefed.blahaj.zone · -4 pts · 9d (8 replies)

I wouldn't be surprised if airpods don't work right on Android

dogdeanafternoon@lemmy.ca · 0 pts · 9d (7 replies)

This is wrong. LTT hates Apple and even he uses AirPods with his android, cause according to him they are the best earbuds.

sem@piefed.blahaj.zone · 0 pts · 9d (6 replies)

I like that he allegedly doesn't like Apple, but i wouldn't trust him.

dogdeanafternoon@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 9d (5 replies)

What do you mean wouldn’t trust him? He’s not selling you AirPods, and gets absolutely nothing for telling people AirPods are good.

What would be his motivation to lie?

sem@piefed.blahaj.zone · 0 pts · 9d (4 replies)

I don't think he's lying, i just don't trust his opinions about technology to be well informed. Basically, i think he is in it for the views. Maybe airpods are good. But i wouldn't trust his work on the review.

DmMacniel@feddit.org · 3 pts · 9d

Okay sure but that wasn't the point of this comment thread at all? Airpods work with android (and PCs).

dogdeanafternoon@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 9d

Yeah that’s fair, but to be clear, I’m not talking about a review.

Haven’t watched him for a year or two (mostly for the reasons you mentioned), but it would randomly come up in videos all the time how surprised he is that AirPods are actually good.
