I was hanging out with this late gen Y crowd, and literally everyone had their phones out and were messaging other people in the friend group who weren't currently hanging out. Instead of hanging out, they were messaging others who weren't and might later. Then when those people stop by, they'd start messaging other people they're not with. Now and then they'd look up to say "so and so is doing so and so" to someone, like give an update from the person that wasn't there.
Kinda agree. We fucked society up with phones. I both admire that we can hold such a powerful computer and carry it in our pocket, and hate that it's normalized.
There is an episode where a new game is brought on board. It's really enjoyable, and once people start playing, they don't want to stop. Soon, the whole crew is addicted. It turns out the creators of the game are using it for mind control.

I dont think that in the 60s-90s anyone would have necessarily anticipated the existence of smartphones as they are now. Rather than it being a “deliberate” choice not to have them in the show. Its just not a futuristic idea of communication that existed at the time. Theres not smartphones in The Jetsons either. Earlier ideas of what the future would be like were a lot more utopian than the dystopian hellscape induced by smartphones and social media. Their various ideas of the future were a modification of the way people actually lived then, which was simultaneously less connected but also more interpersonally social. They dreamed of a more connected future, but not one where that level of connection would rip apart established social fabrics
There's not a whole lot of entertainment value in having a bunch of people sitting in silence texting other people off screen with the occasional loud video being played to nobody. Even if they are in space.
Ditto for AI. Oh, sure, they played with AI, but always in an embodied holodeck character or an android, never as a disembodied computer program. Imagine a show where every major decision point on the bridge was "do what the computer says."
My friend group was really late to adopt smart phones. I was always the nerdy one, so i had a cracked iphone as soon as it was available. Years later, tgey still rocked the dumb phone. None of us cared about social media at all. The smartphones slowely dripped in, because that was the only thing that you can get.
Boy that broke our whole group. A thing we would always do is hang out, listen to music, talked about movies, whatever. I did this for a long time my the last guy without a smartphone. The day he got an iphone, that was gone. We did it one or two more times and then we kinda drifted apart. Instead of talking about movies and music it was: let me look this up... I saw this thing on (whatever)
This was before tiktok, i can't imagine what younger people go through.

In some networks (i.e. Providence, RI), there is a legit duopoly -- Nexstar owning WPRI (CBS Affiliate), and Sinclair owning WJAR (NBC Afiliate) and now WLNE (ABC Affiliate).
They didn't just buy the rights to air The Price is Right when they bought those stations. They bought control over the news staff, directly. People that have built up generations of trust with the community. Maybe even interacted directly with you or someone in your family at a public event.
Hell, the meteorologist from one of these stations did the commencement speech for my highschool graduation.
There's like, two or three conglomerates that handle the majority of terrestrial radio stations, too. And ditto for print media...at least the "big local" papers. I wouldn't be surprised if the local city papers are seeing the same fate.

One of my coworkers was laughing the other day about how he's always on tik tok while he's driving.
He didn't get the reaction he was looking for, because I was just like "what the fuck is wrong with you!?!"
I was driving with another coworker the next shift and despite having his airpod in one ear he was in the passenger seat scrolling through tik tok with his phone on speaker. Every 5 seconds it was a new audio clip. After about 2 minutes I was starting to contemplate driving into the side of a bridge and ending it all.
It is kind of wild to me that out of all the websites on the internet, 4chan of all places remains one of the few where you stand a chance of seeing a relatively unbiased set of viewpoints. As in, there's no algorithm or underlying agenda promoting certain posts to you and not others. You're going to see posts from users all over the world and they are going to contain every conflicting opinion that mankind is able to hold.
In some ways it reminds me of Lemmy, in that way. I'm glad to hang out with this population instead of that one though. 4chan has had a bit of a reputation for a decade or two now, and the kinds of folks that are drawn to that reputation are usually something of a self-selecting crowd of assholes. I was one of them when I was a teen but I grew out of it.
Lemmy is more beholden to the “upvote algorithm” though, where the most popular posts (and engagement bait) tends to snowball and more obscure posts get less attention.
Algorithmic flattening will be the death of me. Everything is homogenized and made palatable for the masses, either that or engorged to extremes to capture the last neuron that still has an attention span.
The only difference is that you're getting older, so you're experiencing it more viscerally than when you were ten years younger and didn't know better
Functionally very different things. Those old games weren't programmed to feed you a never-ending stream of content that's designed to provoke ever more extreme reactions from you to keep you engaged with the feed. Did they provoke extreme reactions? Maybe, but that's more because they needed to be hard enough that you couldn't finish them during a rental period and you had to buy them.
I often get told to take pictures vertically. Sure, let's get more sky in this picture. Its not like we are at the beach with a nice view on the horizon or anything. I live by the coast in Hampshire, the Isle of Wight is pretty much always in the background of any picture taken by the beach. At least it is when visibility is more than a couple of km.
Oh its bad but even worse since "unalived" was still too spicy so its now things like "alt F4 life" or some shit. I like the creativity, but the censorship levels make me want to scream.

A baby human is a blank canvas. Within some genetic limits, you can mold it into the next Einstein or a total leech of a couch potato who does nothing but scroll 24/7 and spends their life as a leech on society.
And so we (American society) wax on extensively about how our kids are the most important thing, but then we systematically fail them at pretty much every available decision point. Usually with good intentions, but fail nonetheless.
TikTok etc are an example. We want to be Very Sure kids aren't exposed to VIOLENCE or PORNOGRAPHY (god forbid little Timmy see a boob before his 18th bday) so we create things like TikTok and YouTube Kids. And we censor the hell out of them- god forbid little Timmy hear someone discuss death or violence. We feed Timmy a diet of 30 second videos that are 'Kid Safe!' And then we have no idea why Timmy grows up with a 45 second attention span and no understanding of the world.
Meanwhile some mother trains her kids to be self-reliant and lets her 12yo walk a quarter mile to school and she gets the cops up her ass for child endangerment.
yeah well, we train our kids to be like ourselves.

So we raise our kids perhaps with the desire they be like us, but while providing a totally different childhood experience. And then we complain that they don't turn out like us.

So you have a tiny handful of child predators and rather than do the sane thing and say 'hey kids, here's what to watch out for, and here's a panic button push it if you see anything sus' they say 'we must do EVERYTHING IN OUR POWER TO KEEP EVERY KID SAFE!!!!!11' and the result is kids aren't allowed outside because it's 'not safe'.
Not that anyone questioned if keeping kids inside was bad for the kid for other reasons...

That speaks to a larger problem I feel is happening- that parents aren't parenting their children nearly enough.
When I was a kid my house was full of books of all reading levels, like everything from 'A is for Apple' to 'War and Peace' or 'Around the World in 80 Days'. My parents took significant time to read together, and encourage me to read anything I felt like. We watched very little TV, and that was an intentional decision. This was high-effort, high-time-investment parenting and it's a huge part of why I am who I am today. But they did it by example. Screens weren't a big part of their lives, and while we had technology there was a deliberate effort to prevent it from consuming our lives.
Now I go out to a restaurant and I see a bunch of people out to dinner- all the kids are on one end of the table with 3 ipads leaning together so everyone can watch something. I'm sure it's easier than training your kids to carry a conversation or training them to sit quietly while the adults talk, but it's also training them that there's no need for self-control and the digital babysitter will alleviate all boredom. And the parents can't be bothered to stop scrolling themselves.
I know a few people who are in education so I hear from them the result. When a kid acts out the parent is more likely to fight the teacher than reprimand their child. Mondays suck because the kids spend the weekend chock full of junk food and screens. Getting any attention span beyond a few minutes is pulling teeth. And at the 3rd grade level, where I (and much of my class) was reading chapter books, kids are now still sounding out words Kindergarten style.
Plus which- in an effort to ensure kids don't suffer social stigma, the decision was made that we now no longer hold kids back a grade pretty much ever. So if Timmy can't handle the 3rd grade material, we just rubber stamp him into 4th grade where he'll be even farther behind. Repeat this for another 8 years and you have kids who can't read going into college.
Sad thing is- I can rant all I want, and I suspect you'll agree with much of it. But it's damn near impossible to fix it. The populace is divided over do we want the red asshole or the blue asshole in charge, and while the blue asshole might be a bit better on education there's nothing like the real radical reform we need.
Alt F4 life has some creativity I can appreciate. Until everyone repeats it far too much. Tiktok just seems like the same few things repeated endlessly. I hear it on my partners phone. Oh, this 5 second soundtrack again that I have heard 2000 times before. How original... And then again when the video loops and repeats.
i'm in my 40s and every woman I meet uses it. young or old.
they can't live without it. it's their bible. it tells them what to wear, what things to buy, what expensive restaurant to go to, what place to travel to, the latest therapy-speak, etc.
I feel like I'd have to be 55+ to find any single women who don't use tiktok.
If it helps, I once years ago spent easily 12-16 hours a day on TikTok but don't watch any these days. I'm actually quite intolerant towards short videos and don't like even watch things people try to show me. People can change, they just gotta notice how harmful it is to their brains. Embrace the boredom.
What I fear is when TikTok’s (or YouTube, Facebook, whatever) shaping of public opinion becomes more dramatic and blatant.
For instance, let’s say a leader connected to the Tiktok’s owner didn’t like their political opponent? What if they just deprioritized them from the algorithm, so their name is basically unknown?
Or what if a certain scandal was countered by boosting opposition videos?
If this sounds like I’m describing extant scenarios, well… yes.
Censorship is no longer hard. It’s statistical. Truth doesn’t matter if it doesn’t show up in feeds, and this is more scary to me than any mental effects Tiktok may be having.
Plus truth makes you an anti-social asshole. nobody likes it.

It is kind of wild to me that out of all the websites on the internet, 4chan of all places remains one of the few where you stand a chance of seeing a relatively unbiased set of viewpoints. As in, there's no algorithm or underlying agenda promoting certain posts to you and not others. You're going to see posts from users all over the world and they are going to contain every conflicting opinion that mankind is able to hold.
In some ways it reminds me of Lemmy, in that way. I'm glad to hang out with this population instead of that one though. 4chan has had a bit of a reputation for a decade or two now, and the kinds of folks that are drawn to that reputation are usually something of a self-selecting crowd of assholes. I was one of them when I was a teen but I grew out of it.

Lemmy is more beholden to the “upvote algorithm” though, where the most popular posts (and engagement bait) tends to snowball and more obscure posts get less attention.
4chan is chronological. It’s more pure, in a way.

Functionally very different things. Those old games weren't programmed to feed you a never-ending stream of content that's designed to provoke ever more extreme reactions from you to keep you engaged with the feed. Did they provoke extreme reactions? Maybe, but that's more because they needed to be hard enough that you couldn't finish them during a rental period and you had to buy them.

I often get told to take pictures vertically. Sure, let's get more sky in this picture. Its not like we are at the beach with a nice view on the horizon or anything. I live by the coast in Hampshire, the Isle of Wight is pretty much always in the background of any picture taken by the beach. At least it is when visibility is more than a couple of km.

A baby human is a blank canvas. Within some genetic limits, you can mold it into the next Einstein or a total leech of a couch potato who does nothing but scroll 24/7 and spends their life as a leech on society.
And so we (American society) wax on extensively about how our kids are the most important thing, but then we systematically fail them at pretty much every available decision point. Usually with good intentions, but fail nonetheless.
TikTok etc are an example. We want to be Very Sure kids aren't exposed to VIOLENCE or PORNOGRAPHY (god forbid little Timmy see a boob before his 18th bday) so we create things like TikTok and YouTube Kids. And we censor the hell out of them- god forbid little Timmy hear someone discuss death or violence. We feed Timmy a diet of 30 second videos that are 'Kid Safe!' And then we have no idea why Timmy grows up with a 45 second attention span and no understanding of the world.
Meanwhile some mother trains her kids to be self-reliant and lets her 12yo walk a quarter mile to school and she gets the cops up her ass for child endangerment.

Look at the stereotypical boomer generation. 'When I was a kid I walked 20 miles to school uphill both ways' 'when I was a kid we didn't have any of this tech we went outside and played ball'.
Then from the same group
'OMG you can't let your kid go unsupervised it's not safe!!!' 'You let your kid walk on a public road without an adult? What's wrong with you?' 'We need to make sure every kid knows how to use the Internet we'll ditch textbooks and give every kid a shitty laptop instead!' 'You can't go in the park without an adult there might be PrEdAtOrS!!!!11 stay inside!!!'
So we raise our kids perhaps with the desire they be like us, but while providing a totally different childhood experience. And then we complain that they don't turn out like us.
Further than that- they never consider that the responsible answer to a problem may simply be to ignore it, that the solution may be worse than the problem, especially when it impacts a kids safety.
So you have a tiny handful of child predators and rather than do the sane thing and say 'hey kids, here's what to watch out for, and here's a panic button push it if you see anything sus' they say 'we must do EVERYTHING IN OUR POWER TO KEEP EVERY KID SAFE!!!!!11' and the result is kids aren't allowed outside because it's 'not safe'.
Not that anyone questioned if keeping kids inside was bad for the kid for other reasons...
That speaks to a larger problem I feel is happening- that parents aren't parenting their children nearly enough.
When I was a kid my house was full of books of all reading levels, like everything from 'A is for Apple' to 'War and Peace' or 'Around the World in 80 Days'. My parents took significant time to read together, and encourage me to read anything I felt like. We watched very little TV, and that was an intentional decision. This was high-effort, high-time-investment parenting and it's a huge part of why I am who I am today. But they did it by example. Screens weren't a big part of their lives, and while we had technology there was a deliberate effort to prevent it from consuming our lives.
Now I go out to a restaurant and I see a bunch of people out to dinner- all the kids are on one end of the table with 3 ipads leaning together so everyone can watch something. I'm sure it's easier than training your kids to carry a conversation or training them to sit quietly while the adults talk, but it's also training them that there's no need for self-control and the digital babysitter will alleviate all boredom. And the parents can't be bothered to stop scrolling themselves.
I know a few people who are in education so I hear from them the result. When a kid acts out the parent is more likely to fight the teacher than reprimand their child. Mondays suck because the kids spend the weekend chock full of junk food and screens. Getting any attention span beyond a few minutes is pulling teeth. And at the 3rd grade level, where I (and much of my class) was reading chapter books, kids are now still sounding out words Kindergarten style.
Plus which- in an effort to ensure kids don't suffer social stigma, the decision was made that we now no longer hold kids back a grade pretty much ever. So if Timmy can't handle the 3rd grade material, we just rubber stamp him into 4th grade where he'll be even farther behind. Repeat this for another 8 years and you have kids who can't read going into college.
Sad thing is- I can rant all I want, and I suspect you'll agree with much of it. But it's damn near impossible to fix it. The populace is divided over do we want the red asshole or the blue asshole in charge, and while the blue asshole might be a bit better on education there's nothing like the real radical reform we need.

they can't live without it. it's their bible. it tells them what to wear, what things to buy, what expensive restaurant to go to, what place to travel to, the latest therapy-speak, etc.

If it helps, I once years ago spent easily 12-16 hours a day on TikTok but don't watch any these days. I'm actually quite intolerant towards short videos and don't like even watch things people try to show me. People can change, they just gotta notice how harmful it is to their brains. What I fear is when TikTok’s (or YouTube, Facebook, whatever) shaping of public opinion becomes more dramatic and blatant.
For instance, let’s say a leader connected to the Tiktok’s owner didn’t like their political opponent? What if they just deprioritized them from the algorithm, so their name is basically unknown?
Or what if a certain scandal was countered by boosting opposition videos?
If this sounds like I’m describing extant scenarios, well… yes.
Censorship is no longer hard. It’s statistical. Truth doesn’t matter if it doesn’t show up in feeds, and this is more scary to me than any mental effects Tiktok may be having.

It is a legitimate problem that TikTok is a prime vector for spreading and normalizing medical misinformation regarding mental health and psychology terms and concepts.
