Recently watched The Seven Year Itch (1955) and the man claims to be 37. He looks like a young 50. Cigarettes.

VeganBtw@piefed.social · 84 pts · 1d (14 replies)

Just watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Nicholson was 38 during filming. I thought he looked 50 too.

kurwa@lemmy.world · 66 pts · 1d (12 replies)

Nah he looks 38 lol

Viceversa@lemmy.world · 31 pts · 1d

No, he definitely looks well into 45+

atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works · 19 pts · 1d

I’m just a few months behind that… no he does not.

NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 23h (6 replies)

I’m 38. He does not look 38.

majster@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 14h (4 replies)

He does. Its just the hairstyle

MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 11h (3 replies)

And the creases.

kurwa@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 3h (2 replies)

You mean wrinkles?

MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 3h

Yep. English and their 100 case-dependent meanings.

kurwa@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 3h

Well he doesn't look 50 that's for sure. His hairline isn't great, but people in their 20s can have a fucked up hairline.

RebekahWSD@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1d

As I get older, the more I agree

Rumo161@feddit.org · 5 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Maybe a ripe 32 if you ask me.

jaybone@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 1d

16 going on 35.

Alexstarfire@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 23h

Bottom half looks 38. Top half looks 48.

DahGangalang@infosec.pub · 17 pts · 1d

Recently did a watch of Rear Window (1954), and yeah, there's a scene in the beginning where the main character's nurse calls the main character "young man". Main character (Jimmy Stewart?) was 46 at the film's release.

Wild.

WappleFF27@feddit.online · 15 pts · 1d (2 replies)

When I was a kid, restaurants still smelled like tobacco.

Didn't really stop until early 2000's

Hansae@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 20h (1 reply)

I remember this on older busses and coaches as a child, and the ashtrays on the back of seats. Mustve been wack in the 1990s with how much indoor smoking was still accepted.

dontgogettingtooclever@piefed.social · 2 pts · 19h

I don't know what it peaked, but by the 90s presence of smoking was trending downwards

bedwyr@piefed.ca · 3 pts · 23h

Sunlight is the big factor in premature aging of the skin and especially face. Cigarettes are said to be a big factor too, as is hard liquor to excess.

Themosthighstrange@lemmy.world · 103 pts · 1d (2 replies)

yes the thing that changed was lead posioning from gas and chain smoking cigs starting at 12

SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 9h

Also pesticides were even more unregulated than they are now. Remember how they just sprayed DDT everywhere in the 40's till the 70's. Even on directly on people. Shit had multigenerational consequences, even grandchildren of people who had a high exposure to that stuff are being affected.

LittleBorat3@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 12h

I smoked from 15 to 30 drank every weekend in the same time. 40 now and I look more like the one on the right

danielfm123@lemmy.zip · 78 pts · 1d (2 replies)

The one in the left married at 23 and his 4 kids.

forkDestroyer@infosec.pub · 15 pts · 1d

That explains a lot, what with the sleep deprivation and drastic lifestyle changes brought on my most kids.

IamLost@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 21h

Ugh married his 4 kids too that's sick

queermunist@lemmy.ml · 71 pts · 1d

In addition to people not smoking anymore, direct Sun exposure has dropped dramatically too.

SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 43 pts · 20h (2 replies)

Lots of very important things, but mostly the smoking.

anarchy79@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 19h

And that nobody has AIDS.

cantstopthesignal@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 9h

Also having kids.

tdawg@lemmy.world · 42 pts · 1d (13 replies)

Great example of how stress ages you

Photonic@lemmy.world · 83 pts · 1d (10 replies)

Not stress, smoking, drinking and no sunscreen does that to you.

I don’t think stress is any less, but actually more than in the 90’s

WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world · 24 pts · 1d (8 replies)

Few people are as consistently stressed as Tony Soprano. Sure, he's got the big house, the big car, the ridiculously understanding wife, but he also has had to kill a few family members and more friends than is usually healthy. Once, he got a good friend indebted to him then burnt down his restaurant. All this while trying to keep two steps ahead of the feds. That lifestyle would age anyone.

BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 1d (3 replies)

None of that was real though lol.

To be fair, I don't know much about James Gandilfini.

OrteilGenou@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Jim Gandalfini? Yeah I knew him. I knew him when he was a young, unshaven actor, before he fell, and spent forty years battling the foul Morgul stench. He emerged from that an aged man, his stubbled chin showing hints of grey, body and mind exhausted in spite of a great victory over the dark side. He took to wearing nothing but bathrobes, and rested heavily on his staff when he had to walk. His recovery was heavily reliant on resting his mind with the weed leaf, and rejuvenating his mind amongst the gardens and feasts of middle America, off the beaten track, as aeons passed him by. Soon, the great evil mustered its strength once more, and he again took to the battlegrounds of the Midwest, or as it was then known, middle earth...

BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 23h

Neat TIL

FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 1d

Wouldn’t it be great if that was true

Photonic@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1d

I’m talking more about the 90’s in general

noxypaws@pawb.social · 5 pts · 1d

All due respect, you got no fuckin' idea what it's like to be Number One. Every decision you make affects every facet of every other fuckin' thing. It's too much to deal with almost. And in the end you're completely alone with it all.

anarchy79@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 19h (1 reply)

Edie Falco in one of the later seasons gave one of the most impressive and stunning acting performances that I have ever witnessed on TV.

When she screams at Tony to get out of the house, she could shatter hearts with that voice.

Just came to think of it seeing as this is a shitpost or whatever.

WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 18h

Yeah, she really was incredible when the writers gave her something to do.

PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d

Gandolfini was also an addict too

Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 1d (1 reply)

anarchy79@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 19h

Yeah but we didn't know that!

marcos@lemmy.world · 42 pts · 1d (7 replies)

Pantera is nazi?

Edit: Thanks for letting us know. Just looked it up, in 94 a seig heil, then in 2016 or something that and worse, from the lead singer. Shit, I listen to them a bit, but never did before, I had no idea just thought it was kind of catchy and different from my normal rock and blues and jazz and electronic.

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/jan/26/pantera-shows-cancelled-after-frontmans-nazi-salute-prompts-fan-backlash

2piradians@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 18h (2 replies)

Phil Anselmo always came off like an angry white supremacist, but then in 2015 he expressed regret about Pantera's past use of the confederate flag.

Dimebag's views were racist as fuck. It's really a shame considering all his musical talent.

bedwyr@piefed.ca · 1 pts · 9h (1 reply)

That sucks, I just got into them a bit, not much but working out just as a change of pace sometimes, and I endorsed them to a few people too. I guess I need to read about bands before I listen to them.

I'm sure there are plenty of metal bands I could get into that aren't nazis I just have to look for them.

Cenzorrll@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 6h

I think that's a running joke in metal circles. You hear a band that sounds awesome and you spend the rest of the show researching to see if they're Nazis before buying any merch.

Still true tho

orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts · 17 pts · 23h (4 replies)

My wife and I were watching an episode of Frasier and he states that he’s 38 years old at one point. We were both like YEAH FUCKIN RIGHT. I’m 45 and look closer to the person on the right, but I also don’t give a shit about “dress your age” nonsense. I’m not going to willingly age myself up.

Pacattack57@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 21h (1 reply)

He was actually 41 in the show. In real life Frasier’s actual age was 38 so Hollywood went backwards and casted a younger person then the character. Cigarrettes had such a massive effect on people’s looks back then.

orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts · 1 pts · 18h

Oh wow, that tracks. My parents smoked for most of my childhood. I’ve never taken it up and never will.

berrodeguarana@lemmy.eco.br · 2 pts · 8h

Yeah, around that age is when the accumulated damage of poor choices start becoming more evident, IMHO.

I have a friend who doesn't sleep, has ADHD, drinks and smokes a lot, uses vyvanse, and he still looks fine as fuck, despite being a little bit overweight. He's on his late 30s though, good appereance genes for sure.

GroundedGator@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 20h

Water, sunscreen. I feel like it was more common in the past to cast a far older person than the age of the character they were playing too on screen. There is also makeup, style choices and clothes that can influence a view quite a bit.

isleepinahammock@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 24 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Maybe we should simply mature as a species and realize that we shouldn't judge people on clothing beyond basic standards of modesty and hygiene. It's just cloth. I don't want to have to work with someone of any gender that's not wearing tops and bottoms. But as long as your groin is covered and your bare chest isn't showing, we shouldn't care what someone wears, as long as its clean and well kept.

The entire idea of "professional" clothing in the first place is to separate people into artificial social classes to make them easier to divide and conquer. If the guys in the office and on the shop floor are both wearing jeans and t-shirts, it's easier for them to feel solidarity with each other. Are you a factory owner? Make the guys on the shop floor wear coveralls while the guys in the office wear suits, and now you've separated your employees into two distinct camps you can play off against each other. And if you make it so "the professionals" who make the decisions are visually distinct from the common laborers, it cements their position of authority and encourages obedience.

"Professional attire" has always been about control. Nothing more.

Rumo161@feddit.org · 5 pts · 1d
