A newly unveiled statue of the rightwing activist Charlie Kirk was vandalized at the Turning Point USA headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona.

The statue was found with red spray-paint. A nearby poster memorial in front of the statue was vandalized with red paint as well.

My gut says there's a 40% chance they did this themselves to try and gain sympathy. They thought Kirk would be their Horst Wessel, but public opinion never went their way. Less than a month in and they couldn't even get Jimmy Kimmel fired. A year in and everyone finds the Kirk widow off-putting. Thanks to Candice Owens, they're even reduce to arguing with own supporters about whether Erika Kirk and the Mossad had Charlie killed. I could see this being a last ditch effort to regain narrative control.

Blackfeathr@lemmy.world · 58 pts · 2d (3 replies)

Idk if it were a false flag thing they probably would have spraypainted some dumb shit like "A TRANS ANTIFA DID THIS MUHAHAHA" or "IM SO GAY FOR CHARLIE" or something obvious like that, because they lack subtlety.

Pellet-Mark Oil-Based Paintballs are durable for 4-6 years (on trees) and are designed to be fired from a .68 caliber paintball pellet gun to mark hard to reach targets from a distance. They are used to mark trees and animals from across ravines, over difficult to traverse ground, across streams, from horseback, vehicle or helicopter.

I know, a twitter link. Throw it into yt-dlp.

Also, the line that Kirk counters Ms Rachel with may have been a mistranslation and the original text may have said something more along the lines of "Man shall not lay with a boy the same as they lay with a woman", which is a very contentious idea among Christians. Whether that's because it means they're not being told to hate gay people or because they're being told to hate statutory rapists is up to you.

Pegajace@lemmy.world · -5 pts · 1d (23 replies)

It is not a mistranslation, it's very clearly talking about same-sex intercourse. The "mistranslation" angle is being invented out of whole cloth to retcon the Bible.

I appreciate the Christians who are trying to be accepting of LGBTQ+, but IMO they should just acknowledge the Biblical authors were wrong about this instead of pretending they didn't say what they said.

JcbAzPx@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 1d (20 replies)

If it was just about same sex intercourse, they would have included a line about women lying with women. This was very likely more about not denigrating another man by forcing them into the role of a woman. Also, given this spent generations as oral tradition before being written down and translated several times, trying to say your particular personal interpretation is the only possible correct one is asinine at best.

redkid1324@sh.itjust.works · -4 pts · 1d (17 replies)

I'll have to push back there and maybe you have an argument if this was the only time it was talked about in scripture but it is not and it matches the threads of other biblical narratives.

A common thread through the Bible is that families are God's plan for humans on this side of death. They are good to His kingdom and to promote the values of His love. Now homosexuality would directly go against that narrative so I don't think the "man to a woman role" is a valid argument anymore. Romans 1 goes through the "homosexuality is bad" too.

Someone else said we are to say the writers of the Bible are wrong and that is a fundamental difference in ideals that we cannot overcome. I believe the Bible is the word of God and it is complete, authoritative and not up for change based on societal influences where that may not be the case for others so we would be arguing from literal difference in fundamental values. And that's ok to do but no resolution could possibly come out of that.

wolframhydroxide@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 23h (10 replies)

Oh, so you read the bible in its original ancient Hebrew? I wasn't aware any copies survived past the end of the Mouseion. Or do you just conveniently not count all of the translations, excisions and retranslations, along with editorialising at times such as the council of Nicea as "change based on societal influences"? Or, perhaps, do you believe that God, YHWH himself, gave forth the words, in English, to produce the specific version you read?

redkid1324@sh.itjust.works · -4 pts · 20h

I do read it in the ancient Hebrew sometimes and the Bible is one of the most accurate references of history known to mankind. That is a fact. All other books have a fraction of the same accuracy.

Here is some information for you.

The Bible has far more early manuscript copies and a higher percentage of textual agreement between those copies than any other ancient book from the classical world . [1, 2, 3]

Manuscript Count and Comparison

The New Testament: Scholars have found over 5,800 early Greek manuscripts of the New Testament. When including ancient translations in other languages, the total number of early copies exceeds 24,000.

Other Ancient Books: Standard historical works, such as the writings of Plato or Tacitus, survive in only a small handful to a few dozen handwritten copies. Even Homer’s Iliad, which has the next-highest count for an ancient work, has around 1,900 surviving manuscripts.

Details on this manuscript evidence are outlined by the C.S. Lewis Institute.

Textual Accuracy and Preservation

Copy Consistency: When scholars compare thousands of older biblical copies, they find a 95% to 99.5% rate of agreement.

Types of Errors: Most differences between copies are minor spelling mistakes, flipped word orders, or missing single letters made by tired scribes. Very few differences change the meaning of a passage, and none change core doctrines. [4, 5, 6]

Historical and Archaeological Views

Support for Specific Details: Traditional researchers and groups like GotQuestions.org note that archaeology has confirmed many named kings, cities, and events in both the Old and New Testaments.

Broader Debate: Professional historians hold a range of views. While some portions of the text align closely with external historical records, other parts are viewed as theological or legendary narratives rather than strict, literal history. [10, 11, 12]

Would you like to explore the archaeological discoveries related to a specific part of the Bible, or look into how textual criticism works?

EldritchFeminity@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 1d

The Bible has been translated and re-translated across basically every language on the planet, as well as appropriated for propaganda purposes over and over as well. To think that you can take a line at face value - especially in English - is naive. There have been at least 50 different cultures and societal revolutions between you and when that line was first written.

For example, the King James version of the Bible is a propaganda piece commissioned by a monarch at a time when kings were quite literally losing their heads with the express purpose of including as many references to kings and monarchies as possible in order to foster positive sentiments in the peasants toward the "divine right of kings" or whatever.

In early versions of the Bible, Lucifer was imprisoned in Tartarus alongside the Titans that Zeus put in there. I'm pretty sure Hell was added later during a medieval reformation or something. The Bible was definitely altered several times during the Medieval period. The line in question here I think had at least 3 variants during this time period. The one claimed to be about same-sex intercourse, a version potentially about not engaging in CSAM, and one that might be about not fucking somebody in another person's bed.

King David, one of God's anointed, had something like 32 wives and a friend who "loved him in a way that no woman ever could."

One of the people that Jesus heals is the slave of a Roman soldier. In the original Latin text, the word used is for a specific type of slave. A male slave commonly kept as a lover.

And we could have a field day on Biblically accurate angels, "Be not afraid," and the Renaissance era redefining what an angel is.

And then there's also the fact that the Bible was written by multiple different people across several hundred years, at least. The later parts of the New Testament were written by people who lived 300 years after the death of Christ and claimed to know him and what he wanted better than his apostles did. Some of whom who said that the Old Testament and original sin still counted despite the nullification of the Old Testament and the cleansing of original sin being one of the reasons that Christ supposedly sacrificed himself for.

dogslayeggs@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d

A) They can't acknowledge the Bible was wrong about anything. The whole point of their religion is that the Bible is God's words written down by man. Even when you know about the conclave that decided which of the hundreds of "biblical" stories were apocryphal and which were true, hundreds of years after the events of those stories supposedly happened, they will still say that God was guiding that conclave. Bringing up a bad translation also doesn't help, since King James was guided by God to create his translation. The Bible CANNOT be wrong (according to Christians), since it is the word of God.

B) Historical context is important if you want to try interpreting God's words instead of taking them literally. Romans had a very different lifestyle and view of sex and the role of men and women. It could be that God's word was that the TYPE of male relationships the Romans had was not what God wanted, but just two dudes banging was fine.

"And, of course, our hearts go out to the victims in Kentucky for every one of these situations. But we cannot allow them to emotionally hijack the narrative."

"You must use reason when you look at these things," Kirk added. "A free society comes with a cost, and that cost is worth it. Liberty is worth it."

Kirk died doing what he really believed in: getting shot to protect our right to shoot him.

Do you understand why we call you tankies? Because I feel like the tanks are a pretty big thing to ignore.

PepperoniNipple@lazysoci.al · 0 pts · 1d (7 replies)

Because you are MAGAs. Blue or red, light or heavy, doesn't matter, you're literally using a word right-wing "MAGAs" from back then created and abused.

Every single American I have spoken to about Mao, they always paint him as a cartoonishly evil guy who would wake up every morning with an insatiable desire to kill thousands of his own people for no good reason at all, just being evil.

  • You always ignore that Japan did a genocide on China. You looooove Japan. Asian Israel, literally.
  • You ignore that the British got them hooked up with drugs just to make money.
  • You ignore that the Great Leap Forward was done to catch-up with developed countries.

What caused the deaths were the exaggerated quotas that left no food to the peasants. Mao was lied by his piers, because admitting defeat was dangerous to them, but he still found out and reduced those quotas, it was just too late by then.

No one is perfect and flawless, but, the way you paint China or Mao is the same way you have painted Muslims and Arabs as "genetically-born evil terrorists that deserve to die," that hate America "for no reason." You are doing the exact same shit with China, because they kicked you and Britain's ass. They actually managed to become a behemoth, something you don't want anyone to do, hence the reason you are currently killing a bunch of children in Iran, "so they don't get a nuke and become more independent from us" or getting over 30,000+ innocents of us, Mexicans, killed every year with the Iron River. Add another 20,000+ if you count the depression, misery, poverty and silent cardiovascular and neurological diseases an environment like that causes in the poorest and most vulnerable.

You do that to keep us filled with fear, so we work for you for cents an hour, cheap hand labor. That's what you are. You know Mexico has the lands to become an agricultural super power, same with its oil reserves which you already frackled and left us with all the mess frackling does, you simply don't want us to succeed. You pay us a sixth of the salary you pay the average American worker, just for being Mexican. Working as a software engineer from home, same results, same effort, same everything, except the salary, we and Indians and so on are being exploited by American worms.

So, for so long, I used to believe American propaganda about Asia. Ever since I was a kid I noticed you only talked negatively about it all the time. Their air contamination, their overpopulation, their exploitation, you only showed the bad, never the good. I had to go read and find out myself, and what I found out, was just another fabricated attempt to create a similar movement as Islamophobia in the USA, but toward Asians: Sinophobia.

That's literally America's strongest and only talent: Their ability to turn people into racists. Just look at you, you probably cannot even properly explain why you hate China. If your only responses are "cuz they communists, authoritarians" you are literally a MAGA.

AVincentInSpace@pawb.social · 3 pts · 1d

Damn, that's a lot of assumptions about my beliefs based on absolutely jack shit.

Today I learned that I

  • am American
  • love Japan
  • think Muslims and Arabs are "genetically evil"
  • support what Trump is doing in Iran (nay, am personally committing those atrocities myself)
  • am racist toward Mexicans
  • hate China

And that you're so good at reading people that you deduced all of that from me saying Mao was bad because he deployed tanks against his own citizens.

You really think everyone one centimeter to the right of you is a singleminded liberal monolith, don't you?

Paint? Pfft, call me when Kirk's memorial is covered in shit, urine, and vomit, and even then it'd be kept too clean for my tastes.

QueenHawlSera@piefed.social · 7 pts · 1d

No idea why you're being downvoted. Kirk's statue deserves to be used as a public restroom, much like the man's corpse.

Kirk, a key Donald Trump ally, [...]

I don't think I'd go that far. Yes, he had his following, but I don't think he was that influential.

Avicenna@programming.dev · 28 pts · 1d (4 replies)

His corpse was a useful propaganda tool to Trump for a week and then he moved onto the next thing.

A town in Sweden erects a giant straw goat every Yule / Christmas and somebody almost always finds a way to burn it down. That's despite ever increasing measures to protect the goat - fencing, spotlights, CCTV, security guards.

Well that's Charlie Kirk's statue. They'll have to encase the thing behind glass and steel walls to protect it from ever more novel attacks.

SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 8h

"When you build the straw goat how do you do it?"
"Well we first take a 500W high intensity light bulb and pack the straw around it. Makes it shine from inside. Very pretty."

postmateDumbass@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 6h

What is the intent for the straw horse other than to be burned?

heartSagan5@lemmy.zip · 6 pts · 1d

are also reviewing the footage of the incident and are working with law enforcement to identify who did this and hold them accountable.

Right, now - get on those Epstein Files. They're right there, and the perps are right there. Why not them first? Women and children first ... so com'on. Two step it.

CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.social · 6 pts · 6h

Should have just painted the neck tbh

QubaXR@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1d

Instead of a statue, I think a fitting tribute would be to segregate population of a town into "us" and "them", build a wall, then establish a Checkpoint Charlie at the crossing. You know, follow historically tried ideas.

Akasazh@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 12h

Ah, yes. I wouldn't do I didn't think they way.

inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

Now if someone would also drill a nice hole into the statue.

Mulligrubs@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d (3 replies)

If they're smart, they will allow people to paint all over it. Otherwise, it's an ugly statue aesthetically in my opinion, paint could only improve it.

If they're really smart, they did this themselves. Press brings them donations.

I say this as someone who is anti-Kirk murder and anti-political murders in general. I think his assassination will make his message much stronger than it was when he was alive, and now he's a martyr for a message that fundamentally thrives on martyrs. He's already gotten a lot more press than he would of if he was alive.

teslekova@lemmy.ml · 5 pts · 1d

What's his message? Because I haven't heard anything about it except "I died because I love guns lol".

bold_atlas@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d

He became a meme, not a martyr.

ParlimentOfDoom@piefed.zip · 0 pts · 1d

They tried really hard to make him a martyr only to realize within a week or so that no one gave a shit.

It's been a year, people are only bringing it up because it hit the year mark. He'll go back to bring an ironic death for a piece of shit any day now

why go after the statue?

Jankatarch@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Why he gets a statue?

HubertManne@piefed.social · 4 pts · 1d

no idea but it tells me what kinda place turning point is.

FrostyTheDoo@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d (2 replies)

That's the wrong question to ask here. We definitely don't need to address the underlying issue of why someone would do this. What we really need is more good guys with paint cans who can paint over the bad guys' paint. If we add more paint to the equation we can definitely stop statues from being painted.

HubertManne@piefed.social · 0 pts · 1d (1 reply)

yeah I don't think anyone got it. so your at turning point usa and your going after the statue. I was implying a better target for more agressive action.

FrostyTheDoo@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

I was just being facetious and callous towards the people clutching pearls over this (thanks Charlie for teaching us this is the best way to engage on social issues). Not really arguing your point!

UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 1d (6 replies)

No. Idiocracy was funny.

JcbAzPx@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d (1 reply)

To be honest, Idiocracy was an optimistic look into our future. At the very least they were actually trying to fix their problems and willing to listen (at least somewhat) to the smartest person in the world to do it.

Not to mention, they were willing to change their minds when presented with contradictory evidence.

UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d

Idiocracy was an optimistic look into our future. At the very least they were actually trying to fix their problems and willing to listen

There's an implicit criticism in Idiocracy of "Smart" people. Specifically, of institutionalized and bureaucratized forms of tracking and grading intelligence.

The movie kicks off with a bunch of ostensibly smart people doing a bunch of stupid shit - putting careers ahead of family, turning the military into a status symbol, prioritizing asthetics (curing baldness) over real human health. It's implied that the human response to declining intelligence is to build a supercomputer that outsources all our thinking from us.

If we're living in anything, it's the prequel to Idiocracy.
