Others said the campaign had a darker side and stirred up fear of newcomers. Some backers of the Piddington referendum compared their fight against the asylum accommodation to the 1940 Battle of Britain against Nazi Germany.
Villager Herbert Owen, 76, said after voting on Tuesday that the independence referendum "isn't just about Piddington," adding: "It means everything our grandparents, our parents fought for. Today is the Battle of Britain."
Comparing unauthorized immigration to an invasion has become increasingly common among politicians including Nigel Farage of Reform UK, and far-right groups that have been active in organizing and attending anti-immigrant protests.
What a bunch of assholes. From earlier in the article:
Residents of Piddington, which has a population of about 350…
That makes sense. Small town people need to have no say over issues pertaining to classes of people who are "different" from themselves. They're too insulated and lack exposure to those who aren't like them to properly recognize that they're human beings in all the ways that they'd recognize if they knew someone from said class.
Brief story: decades ago, while I was on excellent drugs at a rave, my homophobia (thanks, Mom!) instantly disappeared when I realized the hilarious gay guy, in a group of us smoking cigarettes, was no different from me. "He just wants to take his drugs and have a good time on Saturday night," I realized. He was no different from me!
Small town people need drugs and a good time with people unlike themselves.

Serious question, if the boys that fought fascism knew the future is where their grandchildren wouldn’t be able to afford a house, would stop having children on masse, and wouldn’t be able to get hired. Do you think they’d still have fought? It made their sacrifice worth it?
At least they have some foreign food. On the downside, there’s huge grooming gangs that the police doesn’t dare do anything about because they might be accused of racism.

Frankly the only ant-immigrant parties left are the far fight fascists, and I understand you associate me with them. But that’s not at all representative of. I want the political landscape to be like Denmark.
Respect for people, freedom, laws, the press…, still hard on illegal immigration. I really hate that the only people standing against unlimited immigration are the pro-Russian mega corrupt far-right.
Naich@piefed.world · 31 pts · 2d
Maybe ask yourself WHY it's only the far right parties that are anti-immigrant and blaming all society's ills on immigrants? Have a little think about that, and about what happened in the lead up to WW2. See if you can spot any similarities between those people who's policies you support and the people your grandfather and my father fought against.

The reason houses are not affordable has nothing to do with fighting fascism, so it's an absurd question.
That's a lame excuse the police use to cover up for their gross incompetence. And the similar police inaction on predominantly white grroming gangs can't be credibly attributed to fears of accusations of racism.

That generation themselves took charge of the new councils that in many cases would then veto further housing development to put upward pressure on the value of the homes they had secured, starting to pull up the ladder after many new homes had been freshly built for them following the destruction of the war. Their direct children who inherited the housing are still profiting quite handsomely with similar incentives, although it’s terrible for the great grandchildren. So the bad part is basically working as they themselves intervened to achieve, and regardless of that now reducing homeownership rates those rates still remain higher than those of when that generation was growing up and the homes are much nicer in quality than the slums of the time which were destroyed.
People stopped having children en masse because new technology allowed for family planning and for people to do what seemed important to them in life rather than suddenly winding up as parents and being forced to lock in.
The unemployment rate of 4.9% is much lower than what that war-winning generation had experienced in the interwar period.
None of this situation seems like it would be helped by becoming the slaves of a self-proclaimed master race who themselves were under the unrestrained despotism of a rabid band of bloodthirsty lunatics.

mobyduck648@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d
To be fair this does describe the SNP quite well! I'm a strong believer that a democratic institution is only worthy of the name if you can leave, but the Yes campaign's whitepaper was very sloppy on its economics for example, it did a lot of wishful thinking around oil prices and Westminster paying for pension entitlements. The SNP is also incredibly crooked as it turns out, I'd be properly miffed if I was a Scot that petty corruption was damaging the credibility of the broader independence movement.
I have a lot more time for Plaid Cymru though, they're doing the right things on the subject and they're definitely a lot less shady in my view. Welsh independence is obviously even more challenging economically, but Plaid seem to be pacing themselves sensibly and building trust rather than going full-tilt into an ill-conceived gamble. I can see them delivering independence credibly in the future. Also they've done very well to gain enough seats from Labour to overturn their century-long Welsh streak.

Tiral@lemmy.world · -7 pts · 1d
You're not being "cruel" by not allowing what you didn't agree to in the first place. The government is cruel by not getting approval from people who actually live there. The government is cruel by telling the migrants they have a place to go, when they don't. The government drops them off and goes "cool, good luck" into a community who doesn't want them, then they act shocked when the migrants are treated like shit.
blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 6 pts · 1d
Funny how the people that are treating the migrants like shit are somehow not the cruel ones even though they're the cause of the main instigators of friction in every step there.
Flax_vert@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 1d
Paying human traffickers to try and bypass the visa system and lying about fleeing some war in france, also lying about your age, in order to claim benefits for people actually in need, tends to instigate friction.
blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 20h
Not only does this have nothing to do with the comment I replied to, it's also a wild claim that seems extremely specific and can't possibly apply across a large group of people to actually be a common problem.
Flax_vert@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 16h
Every channel crosser pays human traffickers to try and game the system. Instead of applying for a visa normally, they take a boat from an already safe country to get here. There have been some good BBC documentaries on it- essentially it's advertised in places like Iraq "pay xyz (usually around £10k) and we'll get you to Britain". Typically the benefits the UK government gives you is part of the advertising material.
I can only speak anecdotally, but in estates where there's asylum seekers placed, you get large groups of those men walking about, staring at you, and there's been cases in the news regarding rape, I have a friend who witnessed them carrying knives attempting an attack on another group of men. Such a thing rarely happens with local people in these areas (not sure how proportionally it is with rape and violence, but when you're in someone else's country, you should be good as gold anyway. Especially if they're giving you benefits and seriously considering an asylum claim. However, this data isn't collected so we can only go off anecdotal evidence rather than lay the issue to rest).
Not all asylum seekers crossed the channel or the Irish border by the way. Plenty of good people already here have situations back home or personal circumstances change. I fully support our system protecting them and helping them, they're the ones it should exist for. Not for people crossing the channel trying to find an easy way into the UK.
blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 15h
This still has nothing to do with the person above blaming everyone except the abusers for abuse. This isn't a comment thread about defining who these migrants are, I'm specifically taking issue with saying the problem is with everyone except the people acting immorrally.

and i severely doubt you'd wnat them moving into your home. but as long as someone else has to deal with the problem what do you care really? you can sit back and judge them and feel superior about what you hypothetically think you would do.
blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 1d
What's the problem exactly? Having immigrants at all?
TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 19h
Immigration is a complex social and economic problem.
And the problem is people dont' want to acknowledge complexity because it's hard. They'd rather vastly over simplify things, and call it bad or good. Without ever going into the policy details and their consequences.
And if you suggest that immigration is complex leftists call you racists, and rightoids think you want to exterminate the white race.
But it's fine, it's easier to grandstand on the internet and feel smug than actually discuss or examine the complexities of immigration, especially because it's someone else's problem.
blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 18h
But you simplified it to "the problem". I was asking for specifics of what exactly the problem is.
TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · -3 pts · 18h
the problem is how many/who immigration to allow in, and where they have to live, how much assistance/benefits will they get, etc.
then how to integrate them into your society, language learning etc.
and that's legal immigration. and that already, has backlash, because why are these people getting so many social services that aren't even available to your own citizens?
illegal immigration is a whole other thing. because by definition, that's not-selective in either population, location, or anything else.
politically the problem the far left things open borders and infinite resources should exist, and the far right things immigration shoudl be disallowed entirely or only be for the rich, and no social services shoudl be given to immigrant.
blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 17h
So your entire assertion above is assuming that everyone else doesn't have to deal with the problem of immigration, so they can throw peanuts from afar without dealing with that problem?
I'm pretty sure everyone here lives somewhere with immigrants. So that's a strange thing to accuse everyone else of.
There are special interest funds and help for all kinds of groups, private and public. Citizens have more social services that aren't available to all immigrants by default. There has never been any data to support this assertion that immigrants receive the benefit of more social funds than citizens.
KernelTale@programming.dev · 2 pts · 10h
Your reasoning is one of the worst thought ones I've read.
Flax_vert@feddit.uk · 0 pts · 1d
It's particularly illegal immigrants. Essentially once someone disregards the immigration system, then their likelihood of disregarding other laws is dramatically increased.
Legal immigrants also hate this happening as well, as they work hard to get a visa and then their reputation gets annihilated by freeloaders and possibly criminals or nuisances escaping repercussions abroad.
blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 20h
Gonna need some citations on the claim that illegal immigrants break the law more than legal immigrants or even natural-born citizens.
Another citation for most illegal immigrants being freeloaders too considering their illegal status makes freeloading much more difficult.
Flax_vert@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 16h
Illegal immigrants are given benefits such as an allowance and accommodation.
https://fullfact.org/immigration/asylum-seeker-support-faqs/#one
https://www.gov.uk/government/news/major-law-change-to-criminalise-small-boat-smuggler-ads
The ONS doesn't collect statistics on crime and immigration status
blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 15h
So then there's no basis to paint the entire group as criminals if there is no data to support that claim.
And that benefit says it's for asylum seekers, not illegal immigrants.
Flax_vert@feddit.uk · 2 pts · 13h
I have anecdotal experience. People who pay human traffickers to illegally bring them from one safe country to another, and then abuse the asylum system should be treated like criminals, yes.

Considering it's about 300 people, most elderly, it's probably not hard for the internet to gather a 100 who have just some basic combat training. Hell, I was thinking similar things like that for certain parts of my country. Could easily apply to both. Simple things like them having to draft their own laws, create their own currency and then when that is created hand over basically all the foreign money back, government from the part of the country that didn't secede still keeps control over the military bases and other government things of importance still in the new country. Things like other have said about disconnecting from nationwide utilities and having to have their own passports.

I get that this is ridiculous, but I have to ask how a town of 350 will accommodate 1200 more? I don't know about small towns in UK but is there enough housing? If more is built, is there a proper infrastructure? As in when I lived in a small town in US, roughly 600, everyone had well water and septic tanks; there was no city like plumbing.
I bring this question up because where I live now, the city keeps building giant apartments and car washes; yet sewage is being dumped in the water. There is a "drought" so plenty of water restrictions. And despite the heatwave this has never been an issue 15 years ago. They okayed all of these buildings, but the entire infrastructure is completely outdated, like don't be surprised if you're showering with sewage or reclaimed water and the lights flicker often sigh. A lot of people that have lived here their whole lives aren't happy about this and there is no possible way this will be fixed even in my lifetime. But hey they just keep increasing bills and taxes.

I see, as long as they don't have shitty living conditions then I don't see what the problem is. I will say if it's anything like certain bases I've been on, like Camp Blanding in the US which was an Internment Camp in WW2... I would feel pretty bad for them.

How can you be sure that these illegal immigrants are no different than you? For example, are you sure they have the same respect for women as you? I met a Pakistani fella once (wasn't an illegal immigrant, but was an international student). He was boasting about how he had two marriages lined up. I think from there it was quite well established that different cultures have different levels of acceptability for behaviour.
emergencyfood@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 8h
This is a very genuine concern. These migrants might know how to make edible food, for one. They might even brush their teeth.
Peruvian_Skies@sh.itjust.works · -5 pts · 19h
Poligamy does not in any way imply disrespect for women. Or are mixed polycules composed exclusively of people who hate all genders?
Flax_vert@feddit.uk · 3 pts · 16h
It's one-way monogamy. Basically objectifies women.
boonhet@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 15h
It's disrespectful for women if men are allowed multiple wives while women are allowed one husband. Women in this case are usually also expected to be subservient to the men.
This is very different from polygamy with equal rights imo.

Oh, cool. I don't often see an unabashed racist in Lemmy comments. Nice to see one who isn't pussyfooting around, so I know I can cleanly block you.
Flax_vert@feddit.uk · 2 pts · 16h
I didn't say anything racist on here, never have and (hopefully) never will. And if I do, I'm sorry.
Edit: read the modlog, I wasn't calling for violence against anyone. The joke was that real patriots would be willing to bear what they are claiming their countrymen are going through in solidarity. Kinda parodying right wing claims and the blitz spirit or signing up for the war 80 years ago, or I guess during COVID. "They" was referring to the villagers of piddington.
REDACTED@infosec.pub · -7 pts · 2d
I mean, it's a small village of 300-400 people. Why the fuck there. Everyone probably knows each other, there are alot of old people, probably nothing much to do there. The resistance is understandable, it's like a government telling you someone random will be living in your family's backyard
Simon_Shitewood@lemmy.ml · 10 pts · 2d
It's more like the government telling you someone random will be living next door to your family's house. You know, exactly like normal.
snugglesthefalse@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 1d
It's not there, it's in the nearest town, 6 miles away. There's about 5 other larger villages and most of a town almost 100 times their population in between them.

Why are people so scared of anyone not like them?
I always love meeting people from different backgrounds than me.
Tell me your life. What's it like where you are from. What's different from here. What do you miss and what are you happy to leave behind.

What's your cat's name and will you invite me over for dinner. ?
No, I chose to live in a quiet village away from crowds of strangers, in a solitude. Don't come here. This isn't about race.
So you're saying their ethnogroup or race is inferior and should be fixed with eugenics?
daannii@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1d
Genetic diversity is healthy.
REDACTED@infosec.pub · -2 pts · 1d
Healthier for who? Let me ask you this - if countries like US and Germany didn't saw such immigration, do you think AfD and MAGA would be winning? If immigration leads to right-wing governments and that is healthy, then MAGA is a natural, healthy response to what is happening. It's of course idiotic, but so is your saying. It almost always leads to problems in society and rise of authoritarism, just like how nazis came to power.
daannii@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d
What?
Are you a fake person cause you didn't even read. That's not what genetic diversity means.
Fyi. The US and the UK's military actions are directly responsible for the mass exodus of civilians from their home countries.
They caused this.
I realize that neither I, nor you were asked if we agreed to fuck up their country for the better part of a century, but nevertheless, our country's leaders used our taxes to go in and fuel dissent, corruption, civil wars, and gave both sides weapons.
All because they wanted to control a natural resource and keep other countries from becoming independent.
This is the end result.
People, who also didn't have a say, getting displaced.
Running from living in hostile unsafe countries to western ones that look a hell of a lot safer.
Don't blame them for what our governments caused.
Don't blame them for trying to survive. Especially when it's our fault they have to leave their home country.
REDACTED@infosec.pub · 1 pts · 21h
Immigration directly contributes to entropy, therefore genetic diversity. But that's not the argument. That's not even what I care about. It's about failure of integration which we see alot in my country, which ends up being our problem. For fucks sake, we had to fight to keep our language as the main language of the country because large group of immigrants started pushing for second official language.
EDIT: It might be interesting for you to know that the groups we do not want the most are of white people. Like, yes, stereotypically people of color can seem scarier, especially to rural folk, but my experience tells me it's really not them you should fear.
daannii@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 10h
If the immigrants were pushing for a second language, how is that removing the first language ?
Spanish was the 2nd language here in the U.S until Trump. Literally never negatively impacted my life in any way.
It just makes it so signs and food labels are in both languages.
It's just making information available to everyone.
bigmamoth@lemmy.world · -25 pts · 2d
Good for them. Still havent understand why western society push infinite migrant into their country without any precaution. Mb cheap labor or new consoomer ? Anyway if the gouvernement deem necessary to create flyers to tell migrant rape is bad I dont want them as neighbor. I wander how Lemmy would react if it were Britain going to another country and local were reacting like this. The double standard is unreal and behind all of that nobody can even answer the simple question why do they have to accept infinite migrant and most important who vote for it ? Nobody ever vote for having migrants in thoses enormous proportion, yet western gouvernement keep pushing for it. And ppl still play dumb to explain why all of sudden anti migrant sentiment is on the rises and capitalize by the right. And everywhere the right is on the rise. Hope the next gouvernement prosecute the one that took thoses decisions that never had the best interest of their citizen

Dont import massively migrant against the will of your population and specially when this policies put your population wellbeing and safety at risk. U know kinda simple, specially when no citizen at all vote for these policies

That "infinite migrant" thing is a far-right propaganda talking point. Nice job falling for it...
Funnily enough, that's also a common talking point amongst outright Nazis. Kinda weird how a certain group of people dreams of punishing elected leaders for doing what they were elected to do. Like upholding the law.
bigmamoth@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 1d
Find me one uk citizen that has vote for more immigration? U can't since they never were able to vote on that subject. So your upholding the law is a lie. It s polittican importing cheap labor and consumer at the depend of the local population. Even with London having more cctv by habitant and square miles than china it doesn't work.
BlindPenguin@piefed.social · 0 pts · 23h
It's called refugee convention and european convention on human rights. Also, you're conflating immigration with asylum, which, funnily enough, is also a common tactic amongst fascists. And once again you use the Nazi dogwhistle of "importing immigrants", which simply does not happen.
bigmamoth@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 17h
Dont care they aren't my issue.
BlindPenguin@piefed.social · 1 pts · 15h
Fascist doesn't care about human rights. In other news: Water turns out to be wet. More news at seven.
phutatorius@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 2d
I believe that, based on the rest of your comment.
They didn't.
Which was a stupid, patronising racist bit of imbecility.
Post-Brexit, the Spanish took measures against the tax-dodging parasites in the Costa del Sol and it failed to cause an international incident.
You can look at party manifestos before you vote. All the parties have policies regarding immigration.
Hundreds of millions spent on propaganda and funding fascists, of course, had no impact on the sentiments of the easily brainwashed.
No, not everywhere. And when you look at who's funding the right, it's largely foreigners or people serving as fronts for foreign money (like crypto billionaires, more correctly called money launderers), but the same xenophobes who rant about immigrants don't seem to mind rich foreign fascists interfering in our politics.
bigmamoth@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 1d
Give me one argument for why immigration serve my direct interest. U can t. So stop lying on every point I make. The issue of gouvernement having to distribute flyers telling rape is bad isn't its racist. It s thoses immigrants need it to be said to them.
REDACTED@infosec.pub · 3 pts · 1d
It's actually quite sad. We have so many major political issues that needs fixing. Just look at what's happening in New York after they finally got a decent leader. But leftists are basically choosing to lose and give it all away in the name of defending immigration, which 80% of the population in pretty much any country stands against. Imagine losing so much development because of not choosing your fights properly and basically fucking it all up just to defend someone who ran away from his home
Self proclaimed social media geniuses everywhere (especially on Lemmy, I know this will get downvoted)
bigmamoth@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d
The worst part is since immigrant is such a large group if u choose to defend it by principle u will defend murder, rape violence and so much more. Immigrants doesn't make the difference between someone trying to escape war and thoses making war trying to escape the consequence of it. The two are the same, immigrants. It s like going to a bbq convention and claiming veganism is the future. U wanna be vegan great. U wanna me to be vegan we have an issue. And it s always threw tax payer money at it and for what ? If your country has strong welfare and redistribution u will get immigration that vampirise thoses ressources at the depend of the ppl. It s just that simple and that s why ppl are against it.
RedGreenBlue@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 1d
Every economy on earth is based on infinite growth to function. That needs more people than the population is comfortable birthing. The solution is to import people. That is the motivation.
Immigration causes social issues. But that is a tomorrow issue. Humans are bad at tomorrow issues.
If you can both import people and blame those imported people for various issues, that is great for politicians.
The alternative solution is more automation, significant wealth distribution and remove billionaires. And if you wanna be extreme; kill off old people.
Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 1d
The government saying something isn’t a smart thing to base your decisions on. The government can say whatever propaganda they want. Hell, in the US, the government said immigrants were eating people’s pets. It’s a bold-faced lie, but it’s far from the first lie a government has made to influence their population.
bigmamoth@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 1d
Yeah the ppl comming from the island that have the issue of cannibalism sure will never eat pets. Just like in Parisian transport immigrant are responsible for half of all sexual agression and robbery. It s not a lie to say immigrant doesntbhave the same societal value as western society. Since it s the gouvernement that push for immigration I dont see your point saying it s "propaganda". Their propaganda is litteraly we must accept immigrants. Not the other way around like the us
