Smashing pumpkins in the happy half???

Valmond@lemmy.world · 54 pts · 1y (5 replies)

And NIN not in the angry?

Venator@lemmy.nz · 32 pts · 1y (2 replies)

The problem is they put horny and angry at opposite ends but NIN are both horny and angry.

hobovision@lemm.ee · 8 pts · 1y

Same with Deftones.

danc4498@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1y

It’s not a good chart when there is no difference between all emotions and no emotions.

atomicorange@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 1y (1 reply)

They have only heard one NIN song and it shows.

Valmond@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

"Killing in the name of!!" Tchum tchum tu tchum tchum !!

Yeah, no kidding one of the most depressing songs ever: https://youtu.be/T69Yk6IccL0 -- The end is the Beginning is the End (Batman and Robin soundtrack)

Also one of the best tracks ever.

Someone only heard “Today” and never listened to a single other track before making this meme.

CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 1y

Also even "Today" is not a happy song lol. From Wikipedia:

After the release and minor success of the band's debut album, Gish, the Smashing Pumpkins were being hyped as "the next Nirvana". However, the band was experiencing several difficulties at the time. Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin was undergoing an increasingly severe addiction to heroin; James Iha and D'arcy Wretzky had recently broken up their romantic relationship; and Billy Corgan had become depressed to the point of contemplating suicide and plagued by writer's block. Corgan recalled that "after the first album, I became completely suicidal. It was an eight-month depression, give or take a month, and I was pretty suicidal for about two or three months."

...

The dark, ironic lyrics of "Today", describing a day when Corgan was feeling depressed and suicidal, contrast with the instrumentation. Michael Snyder of the San Francisco Chronicle said that the song is "downright pretty as rock ballads go" but that "Corgan manages to convey the exhilaration and tragic release he seeks." Corgan told Rolling Stone that "I was really suicidal ... I just thought it was funny to write a song that said today is the greatest day of your life because it can't get any worse." Corgan later compared writing the lyrics of "Today" and "Disarm" to "ripping [his] guts out".

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

Lily is kind of happyish.

ininewcrow@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 1y

I think they're just generally placed in the center white area, meaning they are equally angry, horny, sad and happy. Everyone in the center white is equally part of all four no matter where in the white they were placed.

It wouldn't be easy to list everyone in the center and say that if their name was slightly to one side or not meant they were more angry, happy, horny or sad. I think that's why OP just made a huge white area in the center.

baines@lemmy.cafe · 2 pts · 1y (3 replies)

same about Sublime lol

TimeNaan@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Idk, sublime has pretty happy melodies even if the lyrics aren't

baines@lemmy.cafe · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

sure I’ll agree but the lyrics are kinda important

no amount of cheerful can make a song about losing to a heroine addiction happy

TimeNaan@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

For sure, this meme is all kinds of wonky.

Electric_Druid@lemmy.world · 61 pts · 1y (7 replies)

rmuk@feddit.uk · 16 pts · 1y

Yeah, especially printers. Fuck printers.

Theprogressivist@lemmy.world · 48 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Wouldn't Deftones be in the horny section?

ickplant@lemmy.world · 32 pts · 1y (1 reply)

This is exactly the kind of discussion I’d like on this post.

Glifted@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 1y

Deftones are VERY horny

FeatherConstrictor@sh.itjust.works · 12 pts · 1y

This is what I came here to ask, I specifically was looking for Deftones in the horny section and when I didn't see it I assumed Deftones was excluded.

Imagine my surprise when it's all the way on the angry side.

All the songs are Chino moaning into the mic, make it make sense.

atomicorange@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

Deftones and NIN need to switch places.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world · 48 pts · 1y (8 replies)

Also Morphine, Offspring, Tool, and Veruca Tools, Blink 182 is way more happy and horny than Sublime. Weezer belongs where the Flaming Lips are and RHCP is hornier than both of them.

This chart is awful.

Uh, they put sublime under happy because it's Ska-like. I don't think whoever made this chart ever listened to any of the words.

What I got is arguably their happiest song, and it's painfully obvious it's a depressed person reminding himself that life can be enjoyed, is worth living, even when everything is shit.

Fuck it, fine, and it's all the same, living with Louie Dog's the only way to stay sane.

humanspiral@lemmy.ca · 17 pts · 1y (6 replies)

Angry vs horny as a single axis....

NIN seems to have an angry tone. March of pigs, wish, hand that feeds, head like a hole. There is one sad balad as a cover. There is one horny lyric song, that also happens to be on the happier than sad side.

TheLowestStone@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 1y

The angry/horny axis is silly. Go listen to Stinkfist by Tool and tell me a song can't be both.

surewhynotlem@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 1y (1 reply)

That's why they left Manson off the list. That band was just horngry.

rumba@lemmy.zip · 9 pts · 1y

I went to NIN, Manson opened and Jim Rose Circus sideshow ran in between.

I had shitty seats in the back corner of my mid-sized venue. There were parents all around me in the cheap seats. There were no kids with them, but they were obviously looking for their kids.

The main floor was a sea of 90% under-aged goth chicks smoking.

The parents were all solemn and quiet.

Lights went down

Spot came up, the screeching cheer of 10k girls pierced my eardums. Manson walked out on stage

MANSON: "HOW MANY 14 YEAR OLD GIRLS WANT TO FUCK ME"

The GA seats double down on screaming.

All the parents went from disinterested concern to outright anger.

humanspiral@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y

also, hand that feeds and head like a hole have core NIN angry sound and lyrics, but happy dance beat/groove.

ouRKaoS@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

If you want the angriest horny song ever, it's definitely NIN - Closer

humanspiral@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 1y

In OP's perpective, placing NIN where it is is entirely based on Closer, and nothing else. Hurt could be sad without being horny.

It is possible to view Closer as horny and happy. The infactucation bringing him closer to god, is a successful antidote to the sadness he expresses them curing. Also the horniness infatuation in itself is a pursuit of happiness. IMO, if you see the cure for your sadness right before you, you cannot be/no longer sad. So, as it resonates to me, closer is happy and horny, not sad, despite lyrical evidence of sadness.

March of pigs live is totally different to the Fragile version. Latter is sad, Live is insane angry.

The Perfect drug is a bit of remake of closer, lyrically. Cleaner, but same. Drugs make you happy. More of a rhythmic masterpiece. Only is also post 2000 great that could be in the sad tab.

You can be happy and angry at the same time, i.e. your girlfriend saying you have the biggest dick amongst all your friends; but its much harder to be happy and sad at the same time, that takes someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, of you.

Someone explain the sarcasm belt to me and why Radiohead is sad sarcastic

AstridWipenaugh@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 1y

I'm not sure sarcasm is the right word. I'd say it's more "self awareness". Cake is a good example. They're not serious and their music is almost a parody of pop-alt-rock at the time. Radiohead is borderline self-aware; they're sad and they know it, but not so sad as to be "serious" about it like Dashboard Confessional.

FauxPseudo@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1y

This explains why I never liked Foo Fighters.

Manifish_Destiny@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y

Missing queens of the stone age in the bottom right.

Or left.

Bush? ... don't you mean Bush X

Lol ... Canadian here asking

Hmm. Missing Everclear.

Just like that Father of Mine...

redwattlebird@lemmings.world · 3 pts · 1y

Tell me where has he been?

eugenevdebs@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 6 pts · 1y

Where would They Might Be Giants and Barenaked Ladies be on this? BNL, despite the name, isn't horny.

OldChicoAle@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Why can't you be angry and horny?

StellarSt0rm@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

Exactly my thought! Why not both!?

Ween is a giant circle around the entire graph that's too large to be depicted here

Kolanaki@pawb.social · 4 pts · 1y

Ween signifies more than these four basic emotions. They've even created new emotions just to write songs about.

Title: 90s bands

My brain: Morbid Angel, Obituary, Sepultura, Corrosion of Conformity, Eyehategod, Dissection, among others.

arken@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1y (1 reply)

My brain: 4/6 of those are 80s bands

SpiceDealer@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 1y

Some those did get their start in the 80s but all of them hit their peak in the 90s.

Morphine should be as far to the right as they are to the left. Not sure what the original creator of the chart was thinking.

Gwingollor@lemm.ee · 5 pts · 1y

Yeah, I really don't get that choice either. There's a bunch I disagree with, bit that one was the worst imo. Def very horny though

eezeebee@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 1y

Sad music is the best. Deftones are way more horny than angry.

toomanypancakes@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1y

I may not fully agree with your chart, but i love the effort that went into this

philthi@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Can I get an explanation of what it feels like to be happy and angry?

spankmonkey@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)
GorGor@startrek.website · 3 pts · 1y

Hell yeah. I might have gone with Everglade but I'm just glad L7 is represented.

Nirvana is both quite horny AND quite angry more than neither.

uniquethrowagay@feddit.org · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I've been licking the walls of her anus.

kerrigan778@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

And that's one of their songs that ISN'T about sex. Honestly it's been awhile but I'm struggling to think of a Nirvana song that is actually about (positive) sex rather than using it metaphorically. It makes sense from someone with a very unusual relationship with sexuality. (Ie. Kurt was likely trans but didn't really have the opportunity to discover that)

JackLSauce@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y

Glad to see Blur blurring the line

SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y

Didn’t Mike Patton from Faith No More eat a tampon from L7?

So I guess that makes sense they’re close.

tino@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y

No Doubt got my teenage brain horny

tacobellhop@midwest.social · 3 pts · 1y
Kolanaki@pawb.social · 3 pts · 1y

No wonder I listen to a lot of Foo Fighters.

unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz · 3 pts · 1y

Bad Religion, for the endless ranting raging. Suffer is an epic album. fuckin 1982 for real.

if you get tired of that rather repetitive business, switch to Husker Du

break all the fuckin rules and go to hell with superman

failsatfunny@lemm.ee · 3 pts · 1y

If Dave Matthews was on this list it would just replace the word Horny.

I wonder where Linkin Park would fit

I was about to make a comment about how blatantly stupid this chart is leaving out many bands (Nirvana, Tool, Pantera, etc) and getting alignments completely fucked up (NIN, No Doubt, L7....). Then I looked at the community it was posted in.

Well played @ickplant@lemmy.world. Well played. 👏🏻

faythofdragons@slrpnk.net · 11 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Nirvana is on the blue line by Sad, Tool is above it in the pink/purple

dryfter@lemm.ee · 3 pts · 1y

I’m apparently blind as a bat 🤦🏻‍♂️

debil@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y

Type-O-Negative had its most popular moments in the 90's. I think the placement would be quite horny and fairly sad. (If it were Carnivore and the 80's, the scale would implode because it doesn't accommodate very angry but really horny.)

Nangijala@feddit.dk · 2 pts · 1y

I would but deftones in horny tbh. Especially on the Queen of the Damned soundtrack. Everyone was horny on that soundtrack.

greedytacothief@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

So like, is Ween not on here because they're off the charts horny?

Manmoth@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 1y

Ween is on the Z axis

arken@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

I'm guessing the reason that The Cure (debut LP from 1979) is on this list is that it was made by an american, that first heard them because of "Friday I'm in Love"?

RizzoTheSmall@lemm.ee · 2 pts · 1y

Blink-182 veered wildly to the right towards 2012. They're mostly back on the left again now, though.

HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1y

I miss Chris Cornell. He was all of those emotions all at once.

RizzoTheSmall@lemm.ee · 1 pts · 1y

I would say rather than Angry Sad, that Deftones is Angry Horny with songs like Knife Party, Change In The House Of Flies, Digital Bath etc. but the chart puts them opposing 🤷

tomkatt@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

I'm just glad Veruca Salt made the list.

Also, I dunno if I'd lump Sublime into the "happy/horny" category. They're more on the "sad/horny" side of the chart.

dumbass@leminal.space · 0 pts · 1y

Limp Bizkit should be smack bang the middle, they're happy angry sad and horny.
