If this list was done for my class back when I was in school, realistically it'd just be slurs

ickplant@lemmy.world · 104 pts · 1y (5 replies)

Damn, you are probably right. Maybe this generation isn’t so doomed after all.

fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net · 32 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Much to do is always made of the kids personally I'm undecided. I have a feeling that they might go hard left after the formative experiences are Christmas being ruined by the right winger in the White House

unconfirmedsourcesDOTgov@lemmy.sdf.org · 7 pts · 1y

Only if they receive the message that the left offers solutions, and not just more chaos.

aeshna_cyanea@lemm.ee · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

At the moment all the young people entering politics had their formative experiences be the Biden administration and the men at least are very right wing

fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net · -1 pts · 1y

Biden was such a wet fart of a president

fmstrat@lemmy.nowsci.com · 0 pts · 1y

Percentage of young men is increasingly right wing, unfortunately. Economy/costs is usually not the driver for the young, it's community, perceptions of confidence and strength, and attitude towards sex (once old enough, but much younger now than it used to be [in the US]).

Gen A / Z slang is objectively cooler than this 😞

Comrade_Spood@slrpnk.net · 13 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Some of this was Gen Z slang. Like ROFLcopter. Early Gen Z was part of the stuff like Gay Luigi, the troll song, nyan cat, yeeee, rick rolling, swag, 360 no scope mlg, etc

conditional_soup@lemm.ee · 8 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Pretty sure ROFLCopter and rickrolling was Gen Y

Comrade_Spood@slrpnk.net · 12 pts · 1y

It was definitely created by millenials, but that doesnt mean it wasn't used by gen z. Generations aren't as clear cut as people like to pretend

FrChazzz@lemm.ee · 56 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Story time! When I was in high school (~1998/99) a group of kids decided to start a “gang.” I went to a small Baptist school. Kids were bored. This was maybe second period. They called their gang the “Yo’s.” Saying “Yo” was pretty much the extent of their gang. By lunchtime a group of us got annoyed and decided to start a rival gang called the “No’s.” The Bloods to the Yo’s Crips. The sign you were a No was you grabbed a brown paper towel from the bathroom and wore it hanging from your back pocket.

Anyway, just before dismissal everyone was called into an assembly and given a lecture on gangs and told that anyone wearing a brown paper towel would receive a detention. I am still amused at how seriously our administration took this obviously stupid and juvenile joke.

uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 18 pts · 1y

Wait until you learn how seriously law enforcement took street gangs.

The whole Saints Row series was based on the dichotomy between incorrigible feral teens, a product of hands-off parenting while simultaneously running an international drug and crime syndicate

Of note is the property of ur-fascism the enemy [of the movement] is simultaneously strong and weak

Jtee@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

We weren't allowed to wear hats because that meant you were in a gang...

Snowclone@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y

Early 90s they were TERRIFIED we might wear gang color shoe laces.

tiredofsametab@fedia.io · 3 pts · 1y

In public highschool in the '90s in rural Ohio. A bunch dressed in western/cowboy gear and brought guns to a football game and there was some other 'gang' as well (maybe same fashion but different belief? I don't remember). One person got found with a gun and arrested, but nothing else came of it. Yeehaw, I suppose.

KoboldCoterie@pawb.social · 52 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Ohio being on the list is pretty funny (assuming this is in the US). Going to make geography and history classes awkward.

What grade is this, that Edging and Goon were common enough terms that they had to be included here?

"Animal noises" is very broad. Furry persecution. :(

The fact that they lose "LiveSchool points", whatever those are, presumably for saying these words, is almost worse than the fact that they have this list at all. I don't know what that system is or how it works, but I already hate it.

fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net · 18 pts · 1y

It's probably some fast she discipline system. The way we treat kids in schools is horrific, has been for quite a while though but they feel entitled to subject kids to whatever technological Horrors they can come up with

Broadfern@lemmy.world · 46 pts · 1y (2 replies)

As always, the best way to get kids to stop using these words is to use them yourself. Use the ancient cringe-power to disarm the youth 🦹🔥

wolframhydroxide@sh.itjust.works · 27 pts · 1y (1 reply)

As a teacher, I cannot tell you how much this changed my life. I just spew their random shit right at them, totally straight-faced, with a painful degree of enunciation. They do not say those words again in my presence. Their cringe feeds me. I also find it helpful to try to get them to define each term, in excruciating detail, then I destroy the word for them.

lars@lemmy.sdf.org · 8 pts · 1y

Let’s everyone thank chat for yeeting this advice to us

napkin2020@sh.itjust.works · 40 pts · 1y (7 replies)

The best way to make sure everyone is saying those words is to ban them lol

Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 30 pts · 1y (6 replies)

And best way to make them stop being used, is using them completely wrong and with the "i am hip with the teens" attitude

rbamgnxl5@lemm.ee · 13 pts · 1y (2 replies)

This works so very well. Turn them from fun to cringe with one irritating parent move.

I threatened to get a Sigma Dad tshirt and wear it to my son's school. He's since stopped with all the sigma stuff.

bitjunkie@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 1y

Dozzi92@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1y

It's a slippery slope between saying something ironically and having it become part of your lexicon.

dumbass@leminal.space · 3 pts · 1y

If you're 30+ it's your duty to destroy their words, just like the older generation did to our words, we will in turn kill these words untill only the true cool words remain, that is the way the universe purges itself of cringe.

Drekaridill@feddit.is · 34 pts · 1y (2 replies)

vk6flab@lemmy.radio · 33 pts · 1y

By that measure, Emma is a rockstar and Darius is being bullied by their classmates and the teacher.

LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 1y (2 replies)

What does fein mean? Is it just shortened feign?

spicehoarder@lemm.ee · 10 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Fein comes from the Travis Scott song FE!N. While it is a synonym of "addict", Travis uses it more as a musical refrain. The repeated and somewhat goofy intonation of the repeated phrase is what lead to the memification of this slang word. When using "fein", it can be used like any other nonsensical filler word.

Bulldozer noises

Tank noises (You will all make annoying lawyers)

Soviet national anthem

Russian national anthem

State anthem of Mississippi

Djibouti National anthem

Sakkinarven Polka

Those are just the ones I remember, I am the direct source of at least half of them.

Hobo@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 1y (4 replies)

They changed the state anthem of Mississippi a couple of years ago from Go Mississippi to One Mississippi. It's no longer contextually hilarious and not nearly as hoki. I guess Mississippi decided they were not on the right track and probably were never going to get to the top.

vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Shame the old one is pretty unique, frankly if anyone needs an update it's us Californians. But we are also a somewhat lazy bunch and would probably just make California Dreamin the new anthem. Either that or the committee would let their insanity take hold and ya would end up with something reminiscing a Latin war cant.

Madison420@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

This is wildly unrelated but it's the polka that plays in my head when someone mentions polka which also happens to be mildly problematic though hilarious.

Things I remember people complaining about at various times (I don't really recall gradeschool having any)

  • overuse (or use at all) of dude
  • doy
  • [no] duh
  • dweeb
  • overuse of awesome
  • various "surfer" slang (we all saw the TMNT movie)
  • at some point, maybe around high school, "my bad" became a thing. I still don't really like the phrase much.

I'm sure there are more locked somewhere in the recesses of my brain, but those are the ones that jump to mind. The internet was only really becoming a thing when I was in highschool and I lived in a very rural area for most of it so things spread much more slowly.

It definitely got used a lot by us; but iirc, it's a borrowed slang from an older period we just liked. Like gnarly or tubular. I am pretty sure I've seen it used, in the slang capacity I understand, in a Shaft movie from the 70's.

CoolMatt@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 1y (9 replies)

I don't get why 3, 10, 14, 18, 19, 20 and 22 would be on that list. Some of those arw completely normal words on their own.

Okay Low taper fade probably references something but I don't get it. No names? On what? People just go around saying "no names"? In what context? What does it even mean?

Bassman1805@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 1y (5 replies)

It's a context thing.

Ohio = a bad place to be. Honestly, as a non-Ohio Midwesterner, I say this should be allowed.

Chat = like addressing the twitch chat. "Chat, are we doomed?" It's actually pretty interesting from a linguistics perspective because it's arguably a fourth person pronoun. But in-class I can see it getting out of hand.

barsoap@lemm.ee · 6 pts · 1y (2 replies)

because it’s arguably a fourth person pronoun.

Even if you consider it a pronoun, which you'd then also have to do with "class" in "Class, please open the book at page 14", it's still second person plural. Arguments against "class" and chat" being a pronoun include that they're nouns, I think that's rather convincing.

Fourth person would be "One does not simply walk into Mordor". "One does not address the fourth person". I guess people got it mixed up with the 4th wall that's why the confusion exists.

CoolMatt@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I get 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person, but 4th person is a new concept to me and I'm trying tl wrap my head around it given your examples. This is intersting

Edit: OOOOHH so it's like 3rd person where you're talking to the second person about another person, BUT instead of that person being a specific person (3rd person) it's more like a "they/them" kind of thing where it's not any specific person but just... Anyone at all?

barsoap@lemm.ee · 1 pts · 1y

One refers to an indefinite and generic group, and it's not a "they/them" in the sense that one does not exclude oneself from that group (it's generic, after all). I guess universal quantification is close in meaning.

It's a thing specific to English, or I guess Indo-European languages in general. All languages have first, second, and third person anything beyond that is non-standard. E.g. Finnish has a 0th person, "Infer who is meant from context".

joyjoy@lemm.ee · 1 pts · 1y (2 replies)

How do you misspell memes as mames?

jcs@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1y

"No mames" is a slang phrase in Spanish which is used to mean "no way" or "you’re kidding me," but with a crude connotation, similar to "no f—ing way" in English.

Google Translate shows it as being more vulgar:

artichoke99@lemm.ee · 5 pts · 1y

no mames is Spanish and translates to "no way" or "youre kidding"

starman2112@sh.itjust.works · -1 pts · 1y

Some of these are bullshit. I can see banning "goon," but cardiac arrest meme? Anime words? Animal noises? Let the kids have fun ffs
