Edit: I watched the death of a euphemism video and understand your point now. My original comment was less of a serious assertion and more voicing my general disdain for the idea of crossing out "War," writing "Defense," and continuing to invade countries for decades anyway.
I suppose they do, but that doesn't imply "Department of War" is any less shameful, except for the fact that we know Trump doesn't have shame and only wants to change the name because it makes him sound more authoritarian.
Well, Dept. of War and Dept. of The Navy became DoD. I used to work for them, some people think I'm a Veteran because I use the block print and the 24h time and today is 25Aug25. I'm not, never been shot at but that shit just gets ingrained in you.
The name change was fucking psychological manipulation for the population. You can't argue against defense department spending as easily as you can argue against war department spending.
Bring it on! Make our jobs easier you bumbling brainrotted doughnut dictator.
To make a slight counter, the Defense Department does more than fight. We have humanitarian mission capabilities, and we use it. When shit goes down, you want the military to roll in.
I've told the story many times, but after Hurricane Ivan I assumed I was on my own. When the Florida Guard rolled in the next morning I was weeping in the streets, on my knees, thank god, thank god. I had no idea there would be any aid. Most humbling. Tearing up now in fact.
I also wept, most literally, when the Mississippi Guard rolled in after Katrina. My FIL was there. Two bronze stars from Iraq, the Mississippi coast broke him, PTSD. He was never the same man after cutting houses in half with chainsaws, pushing corpses aside, leading the tip of the spear.
“People sleep peaceably in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.”
This isn't necessarily bloat, it's things the military needs to be able to do. Like 90% of the military is just good logistics and the ability to move resources anywhere in the world quickly. That's good for both an army on the move and helping hurricane victims.
Logistics is effectively the hardest problem and the most expensive one.
A lot of people don't realize that a lot of wasteful spending is effectively required in order to maintain any semblance or level of readiness.
If you are not manufacturing equipment, ammunition, and similar items then you have no one and nowhere to actually manufacture them. A large part of spending is keeping the people, skill sets, facilities, and supply chains running and operating at a minimum required level to support an increase in need. If you don't do this then when you need it, you can't manufacture it anymore, your entire supply chain has to start from scratch.
It's incredibly wasteful but also somewhat necessary.
Yep. Same reasons we can't built a Saturn V any longer. All the supply chains, expertise, etc., are long gone. Imagine keeping all that up to run a B-52 Stratofortress. And yet we do it!
There also has to be redundancy in the supply chain for critical items. That can look like wasteful duplication to someone who doesn't understand how the process works.
Like 90% of the military is just good logistics and the ability to move resources anywhere in the world quickly.
There’s an old WW2 story, where a captured Nazi officer realized they were going to lose the war… Because he overheard American officers complaining that they were running low on ice cream. Nazis at the time were eating their own boot leather while they froze to death in Russia. Meanwhile, the Americans were complaining about a lack of ice cream.
The logistics behind the American military is honestly a modern wonder. If they were willing to divert the time, manpower, and resources to do so, they could erect a fully staffed and stocked McDonalds anywhere on the globe in less than 48 hours. Imagine an entire restaurant being built in a single weekend. Now imagine it in the middle of the ocean on an oil rig, or at the North Pole. The sheer amount of resources and manpower required would be monumental by most standards, but it wouldn’t even be worth a footnote on the military’s expense report.
a fully operational mcdonalds is fully fucking useless. this is not a flex. the logistics are impressive and necessary yeah, but not for shitty overpriced burgers. that's just yay for corporate defense contracts.
If you'd stopped at the end of the second paragraph I might even have upvoted, but then on the third paragraph it started sounding a bit too much like one of Trump's "crying tough guy" stories, and by the end of the post it was full on pro-war.
Came here to say this. It's exactly when it became the department of defense that we had never ending war.
Though I'd still like it to be named the department of defense and then actually do defense. Unless there is a threat of an American being attacked on domestic ground by a foreign power, this isn't really the intended purpose of the military under our constitution.
We should not "defend" our "interests abroad." We shouldn't have interests abroad. That's also one of the founding ideas of this country. "Defend our interest abroad" is an intentionally vague euphemism for "if we didn't use a euphemism and just told you in plain words what we're doing you wouldn't like it because what we are doing is killing people to protect the profits of a very tiny number of people whose company would lose profit if we didn't." If that's not what that euphemism means they wouldn't need a euphemism.
Unless there is a threat of an American being attacked on domestic ground by a foreign power, this isn’t really the intended purpose of the military under our constitution.
Back in the 1700s, a standing military wasn't as necessary, since response times were generally measurable in months, and you could stand up an army in that time. Even then, you needed a navy, since shipbuilding took lots of money and time. But now, to prevent an attack on the civilian population or the government, readiness needs to be much, much higher.
I'm more in agreement with you about "interests abroad." There's far too much interference in the affairs of foreign countries in order to benefit US-based corporations and the ambitions of certain factions of the US elite. But that's a two-way street. For example, Trump is sabotaging renewable energy projects so that the US will continue to be dependent on fossil fuels, since that makes us more vulnerable to manipuation of that market by Russia and other suppliers. Eliminating that massive supply-chain risk should be one of the main pillars of our medium-term national security strategy, and would keep us from being drawn into wars.
The Epstein story still is ongoing in the MAGA base. The whole thing is eating away at Trumps base and despite them getting some of their major talking heads in line, it is still brooding.
A 10 year old boy who is also a felon, a rapist, and fucks 10 year old girls, while letting other 10 year old boys dictate policy while he golfs and rapes people.
He's more like a ten year old boy who fucks three-year-old girls who don't yet have the language to say what happened to them...and when they get snitchy, he threatens them with violence to shut them up, often demonstrating on a small animal.
I think I'm trying to say he's not just a precocious kid with anger issues, but a precocious kid with a cruelty streak and symptoms of physical neurological effects and poses a danger to himself and others.
As in precocious puberty. Kids who are sexually activated (by premature hormone reactions which can be triggered -- not always -- by sexual abuse) so they get sexually interested before their peers, and ruin recess for everyone else.
When I was growing up (mind you, I was a late, late bloomer) precocious puberty in girls was punished brutally (say being grounded for life). Precocious puberty in boys was rewarded with early sports careers, unless you sucked, in which case you were punished for being a sex pest. This was a source of bullies that preyed on the rest of us.
This is to say, the US really doesn't know how to parent or teach or otherwise administrate children. This is also to say I am way, way bitter about it.
ETA This is one of the purposes of puberty blockers, when it's not used to let questioning trans kids decide to deliberate on what they want to be for a while, so I hope things are generally better. But then, considering how puberty blockers are now politicized, precocious puberty is also politicized, which ruins everyone's Sunday brunch.
It actually used to be called "Department of War". It changed in 1947, which was actually right around the time when the United States went full worldwide imperialism (though there were signs well before then).
Might as well have been named the "Department of Fighting Communist Insurgencies". Truman and Eisenhower unleashed wave after wave of US troops on any pre-ww colonial territory that was trying to throw off the yoke of European occupation.
With Global Communism finally crushed, and ethno-nationalist tin pot plutocrats once again in control of Europe and the Middle East, the US can return to its more McKinley-esque tradition of occupation, enslavement, and extraction. No need to pretend we're shielding anyone from the villainous Soviet Marxists or the vile and malignant IWW.
He wants a Nobel because Obama got one. Could it be any more obvious?!
Trump hates Obama's guts, and Obama drove him to run for the Presidency. Don't believe me? That single roast changed world history. I mean that. That video will be studied 300 years from now as a lever that changed the Western world.
I'm so glad President Trump is focused on the important issues, like renaming bodies of water, mountains, schools, and federal institutions. I didn't need lower grocery prices anyway.
Pretty sure the Carter administration was the last one to have no new wars in over 100 years.
Edit: I was wrong. The US was still involved in wars during his administration.
It's been super easy finding out the USA has only had 8-34 years of peace in it's history, not so much what those years pg peace were combing lists on wikipedia with my phone.
In the same way that a lot of people with powerful friends in the city depend on new highway projects, new community centers, new programs being set up, so that their friends can get paid, people in the US government with powerful friends depend on new wars so that everyone can sell weapons and continue to have good quarters.
The US military benefits enormously from getting a ton of practice. We're trying to run an empire, and very often big militaries get lazy because their countries do so well that they don't really have to be scrappy, and people get complacent. War is so shocking and challenging that the only way to really stay good at it is to be doing it. And so, that's exactly what the US does.
The US has its fingers in so many pies so to speak that all kinds of shit that happens globally we determine to be our business. Civil war in Syria? Holy shit, better make sure the right people win. Let's go fuck up some irregular forces that don't have helicopters or satellite support.
Oh yeah, the military-industrial complex has been an issue since Eisenhower's warning was ignored on his way out. Then again, he could have done something more about it while in office.
JFK had a speech about it and wanted to curtail it before getting assassinated.
There's a pretty good book called "Playing With Fire" about the politics of the late 60s and the events of the time. I had to stop reading it, it's too sad. Bobby Kennedy talking to the crowd after MLK was shot, not knowing that he was going to be dead the same way a short time later, just fucked me up, I put it down.
It was an issue during his presidency, when he actively participated in (at the time) the largest expansion of our nuclear arsenal in history. Eisenhower. like all American presidents, was a hypocrite.
Kind of. The Department of War was the Army only. The Department of Navy was its own department and operated based on a different set of military demands, which was a major reason why the Marines exist.
It wasn't until after World War II when the USA recognized the difficulty in having two separate departments for the military made combined operations hard to implement. You also had the Army maintaining a larger peacetime size and a third branch, the Air Force, being created to optimize for a new theater of war.
The United State military, though the strongest on Earth, cannot compete with the combined forces of Canada and Europe. OTOH, the rest of the "free" world doesn't seem to be taking us seriously enough.
OTOOH, us American's aren't willing to go full war against our friends, and it takes hella more to drive our war machine than Trump has charisma. Civilians drive that machine, can't do without them, think on that. We're not 1930s Germany, starving under hyperinflation.
LOL, got me! Our billionaires and political masters will not likely go that far. I'd like to think they've learned a lesson or two from history, will only drive us to the very brink of desperation.
Has there ever been a more timid, passive, weak, complacent, idiotic population than the current USA?
From afar I watched them passively accept people dying or losing their homes because they couldn't afford health care. I saw them go off to fight stupid unjustifiable wars overseas with little protest. But it is when I saw them accept their kids dying in mass slaughters in schools with barely any outrage for decades that I realized they had lost their humanity. If you can accept such outrageous things without acting you can and will accept anything.
A large number of them actively cheer their own downfall as a nation, their own impoverishment, their slavery and their stupidity. I wouldn't underestimate the tasking of rebuilding a civilized society there. They might kick the Trumpists out with some effort but the rot goes very, very deep.
They might kick the Trumpists out with some effort but the rot goes very, very deep."
I honestly feel that the best thing for America is to break into two parts, let the Maga / Racists have their own country, and the normal ones their own. America isn't compatible with itself as it stands.
They fought a very bloody civil war to avoid that outcome and the US is a much, much stronger country if they bury their differences and work for a common good. In many ways a split would be a much worse outcome than even what we are seeing at the moment.
It's funny that, the North supposedly won, doesn't look that way these days. Do you honestly think they can bury their differences? Maybe in a few generations if these Trump policies are reversed soon. Otherwise it doesn't look good for America.
The south is still losing. Doing even worse under Trump. Things are grim out there. People will swallow their pride and their hate for a better life for them and their kids. Well sane people will anyway. It has happened throughout history. Bitter enemies lay down their weapons and go back to living a life together. I don't believe the US has met my personal definition of sane for some time, accepting stuff no sane society would. The media and for profit religion has a big role in the psychosis I am sure.
Plenty of pushback against Trump. But the news coverage is always some mix of "These leftists are too weak to stop us" and "These leftists are ruining America! Send in tanks to crush them!"
Trump's already had somewhere north of three different assassination attempts on him. We've got protests and riots running from LA to DC. How many times does a President have to call out the National Guard to suppress the public before it counts?
It's kinda ridiculous how out of touch the "why aren't Americans regularly shooting politicians" crowd is. Like, just completely ignoring how militarized American law enforcement is and treating the gun ownership rates as evenly distributed instead of recognizing that the same people who support Trump are the sorts to own 20-100 guns.
Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if encouraging leftists to go out and buy guns to kill politicians is straight out of the COINTELPRO playbook, given what the FBI has been doing to the Muslim communities in the US. But no, by all means, they should keep ignoring the organizing and pushback that has actually been happening and keep baying for blood, regardless of whose
Hell, it wouldn’t surprise me if encouraging leftists to go out and buy guns to kill politicians is straight out of the COINTELPRO playbook
Americans love the idea of having someone else do their dirty work for free. So the endless "Why won't anyone shoot more Republicans? I guess they're all pussies" carping is less about the actual state of American politics and much more about people on the Internet wanting a new thing to jerk off to.
I don't know how you distinguish this from regular old Alex Jones tier bullshit.
there should be riots in the streets at this point. He's calling out the national guard for bullshit reasons and you're allowing him. The Europeans would have driven him off by now, America is a sham lol.
Gladly living on a continent that has nothing to do with the west. You sound like someone happy with this administration. Criticism of your shitty regime is legit, like criticism of Israel, Saudi et al. If you can't see you're no longer a democracy you need a wake up call.
Oh, so you pity, is that it, you don't want to acknowledge the truth. Good luck with that.
And kindly fuck off too, you're unable to rebut any of my statements so your comments are just attacks.
I'm between Lebanon which is already fucked and Nigeria which is, well Nigeria. More developed countries will be graced well before it hits these parts. Hopefully it will be too late then and lets just fuck the world.
It actually used to be the department of war. But they changed it because it gave away that they were invading countries instead of doing self defense.
Trump is simply taking the mask off. Which is good, honestly.
I mean seriously, things are so bad that's the least worrying part. It's not like his base won't be easily convinced not to care, between his prostitutes, the Russian peepee scandal, "touch them by the pussy", what he did with his beauty pageants, what he has done with Ghislaine Maxwell, what he has said about his own daughter. His base just does not care, all the grandstanding was all fake.
He is still going strong with his plans regarding Greenland and Canada, and what he has done with Venezuela is foreboding because it normalizes doing it more and with further steps. The steps he is taking to make the US fascist are far worrying, there's no shortage of dictators who are completely and utterly detestable yet nothing can be done because they rule in a fascist country. You need to be able to prosecute him to make him having trafficked children for sex matter.
I mean...we've been fucking the world up since Korea and Vietnam. Arguably also WW1 (2 we sort of had an excuse because of Japan). And South America before that.
In theory it is the idea that we minimize harm to the heartland by engaging threats/"threats" before they burn down the white house again (mad props to Canada).
But nah. This is just the republicans continuing to be fucking morons. Like when perry (?) campaigned on killing the DOEnergy, got appointed as head, and realized that there were nukes next to all that clean coal.
But nah. This is just the republicans continuing to be fucking morons. Like when perry (?) campaigned on killing the DOEnergy, got appointed as head, and realized that there were nukes next to all that clean coal.
To be fair, most people probably don't realize that nuclear weapons are under the purview of the Deptartment of Engery. Most people would guess the Deptarment of Defense cause nuclear weapons, war, the Pentagon, etc.
However, Rick Perry is still an idiot cause he was a governor of Texas for three terms and ran for President. Rick Perry should have basic understanding of how the Federal government works from being a governor; definitely should understand what Department of Energy does, if you are going to campagin on dismantling it.
The Korean war spun out of the Chinese Civil War and how both (simplifying) NATO and the USSR were already using it as a proxy. We got involved to protect our interests, same as any other war.
If you want to argue that South Korea is better off because of it? I fully agree (I doubt North Korea would have become the hellscape it is now, but a Warsaw Pact Korea would never be as prosperous as South Korea is today). But it was the exact same "we fight a war over there so we don't have to fight a war here" logic.
Yeah about Japan ... the US kinda lit the fuse on that one when it got spooked by Japan's growing (manufacturing) power and expansion in southeast Asia.
We have totally capitulated our soft power to anyone who wants to take the reigns. Fuck me, we've abdicated our leadership, if we ever had it, on renewable energy. This century belongs to China, politically and militarily, and I wish them well, for all of us.
president epstein, trying to do anything to not talk about himself. constant threat of tariffs since hes been doing for a while isnt working, he moved onto the troops in LA strategy, followed by faking "health issues", and insulting people. hes going to keep recycling this until people get tired of it go back to talking about the files.
I mean, it's a more accurate name I guess. It's concerning that they're dropping the euphemism, but it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who's been paying attention.
The US government has shifted its rhetoric. But you're fooling yourself if you believe we've meaningfully changed our foreign policy.
Half the joke of the Biden Admin was in how it picked up Trump's '20-era policies and continued them seamlessly into '25, with little more than a rainbow colored bumper sticker as a fig leaf.
The german empire had barely anything in common with the nazis. Conquest/imperialism maybe. Authoritarianism and militarism yes. But the core of nazi idiologie, anti semitism and racism and arrian belief olus this occultism, nope
Is there though? If a society is trying to murder every one of a particular race because it thinks its necessary and justified for superior races to dominate lesser races, I'm not sure minute differences in underlying philosophy are all that important, if existant.
This is a great sign. When they changed the war department to defense department, its primary mission went from defense to war. Now maybe it can go back.
Can anyone else load the article? I couldn’t. Does it address this?
I'd suggest moving the coast guard and national guard, DHS, FBI to department of defense. Department of War/Offense that includes CIA/State department/NSA/Mind control propaganda is good. The $1T+ budget of department of offense represents $10k/year per tax filing household, and it becomes an obvious, even in "I like money" idiocracy state, that people could vote for a $10k annual dividend instead of paying for the department of offense.
It was already extreme BS to call US empire funding "defense".
When you imagine this, don't leave out the part where you slowly starve to death over months, sustaining yourself on rotten, maggot filled food, while watching a new one of your family's bodies get blown into a red paste with each passing day because I think a lot of people forget about that part of war when they day dream about this stuff.
I think OP's point was more, "Let's just fucking get it over with, come what may." I have to admit, being a student of modern history, that may be the best option.
The problem with that is it will just be a bunch of traumatized kids who have been indoctrinated and used as cannon fodder while the real problems are hidden behind keyboards and walled gardens. Children who have been taught that everything bad that happens to them is the fault of this "other" group they fear and don't understand because of the sheltered and twisted world they're born into.
Authoritarians would LOVE for this country to be split, much easier for branches of control to take over.
My inner conspiracy theorist is telling me that someone at the DoD described climate change as a national security threat that the department needs to address as part of handling defence and that's what triggered this
Seems plausible. Just judging on his public statements though, this is likely related to his comments during the Zelensky visit on canceling elections during wartime.
God dammit. Stop being right. Ugh. How is this asshole in this position??? He tells us the quiet part out loud. He tells us he's going to do absolutely dumb shit. Then he does dumb shit. And people see him do that dumb shit. And everyone is surprised he did the thing he said he was going to do.
He says he'll do awful shit. And everyone dismisses it, because nobody would be THAT bad, right?
I mean, he told he was going to do it if you gave him power. Then he was given power. Why are you surprised he's doing the dumb shit?
That’s my guess too. Claim he can cancel elections during wartime, rename it to the DOW, and then point at the DOW and say we’re at war so he can cancel the election.

"Defend our interest abroad" is an intentionally vague euphemism for "if we didn't use a euphemism and just told you in plain words what we're doing you wouldn't like it because what we are doing is killing people to protect the profits of a very tiny number of people whose company would lose profit if we didn't." If that's not what that euphemism means they wouldn't need a euphemism.
phutatorius@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 361d

AwesomeLowlander@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 360d
... precocious?
uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 360d

It wasn't until after World War II when the USA recognized the difficulty in having two separate departments for the military made combined operations hard to implement.

This is actually great. It is a big problem that department of offense has always masqueraded as national security instead of insecurity.

This is a nothingburger and people are embarrassing themselves getting distracted from the Epstein files and all the actual fascism.

The german empire had barely anything in common with the nazis. Conquest/imperialism maybe. Authoritarianism and militarism yes. But the core of nazi idiologie, anti semitism and racism and arrian belief olus this occultism, nope

Authoritarian is a meaningless term.

Is there though? If a society is trying to murder every one of a particular race because it thinks its necessary and justified for superior races to dominate lesser races, I'm not sure minute differences in underlying philosophy are all that important, if existant.

Now: DOW = Dee Oh Dup?
humanspiral@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 360d
I'd suggest moving the coast guard and national guard, DHS, FBI to department of defense. Department of War/Offense that includes CIA/State department/NSA/Mind control propaganda is good. The $1T+ budget of department of offense represents $10k/year per tax filing household, and it becomes an obvious, even in "I like money" idiocracy state, that people could vote for a $10k annual dividend instead of paying for the department of offense.
It was already extreme BS to call US empire funding "defense".

My inner conspiracy theorist is telling me that someone at the DoD described climate change as a national security threat that the department needs to address as part of handling defence and that's what triggered this
Sunforged@lemmy.ml · 10 pts · 362d

I'm more surprised that he was given power.
