What about the assassination of a senator? Did that also upset the right, or where they all cheering?
13igTyme@piefed.social · 68 pts · 336d
It's okay if they kill a demon-rat. The brain washing combined with stupidity dissolves them of any wrong doing.

What other time in history did people call other people rats and cockroaches?

Can’t recall. There’s nothing Tutsi here though.
tal@lemmy.today · 12 pts · 336d
On one hand, I agree with the point. Political assassinations should be condemned by the right, and it shouldn't be acceptable to have people giving a pass on political grounds.
On the other hand, I was reading the comments on here after Kirk was shot, and almost without exception, people here were cheering. I saw one or two comments from people saying something like "political assassinations are bad", and people heavily downvoting them.
Now, okay. I can't prove that some of the users commenting and cheering on the assassination weren't, say, bots aimed at trying to create political division and polarization, though I doubt that the Threadiverse is likely the juciest of targets for that sort of thing; not a huge userbase. But my strong suspicion is that we are failing to meet the bar being asked of the right here.
Zombiepirate@lemmy.world · 76 pts · 336d
I certainly see where you're coming from; there's a difference though.
Charlie Kirk was fighting to overturn the social contract; he didn't think the country has to accommodate LGB (and especially T) folks, atheists, Muslims, leftists, single women, et cetera. Hell, he loved political violence directed against Democrats.
People who break the social contract should not be surprised when they lose its protection.
grue@lemmy.world · 29 pts · 336d
Tolerance is not a paradox; it is a social construct. The difference between the assassination of the Minnesota state rep and the assassination of Charlie Kirk is that the Kirk was openly inciting violence against others. He rejected the social construct and was thus no longer protected by it.
BakerBagel@midwest.social · 24 pts · 336d
I'll celebrate the death if anyone who's entire existence is to being more pain, cruelty, and hatred into this world. CEO of an evil corporation? Spokesperson for a nazi propaganda network? Corrupt politician that has repeatedly voted against protecting minorities, rent control, of universal healthcare? They have all spread violence and misery to hundreds of millions of people because they thought they were untouchable.
resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 336d
You know Charlie Kirk repeatedly said dead children were a small price to pay for the second amendment?
Do you weep for dead Nazis? I don't.
NotAnotherLemmyUser@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 336d
Yeah, the problem I'm seeing now is that everyone on the right is seeing the left's reaction. And now they don't care if the shooter actually was someone from the left or not.
The response they see is all they need to justify any reaction. Of course they're conveniently forgetting their own response (and Charlie Kirk's response) to Pelosi's attacker.
null@lemmy.nullspace.lol · 2 pts · 335d
Like they needed to justify it...
idiomaddict@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 336d
I’m of two minds about celebrating his death, in that I do, but I agree that people cheering vigilante killings is a sign of an unhealthy society. We definitely have an unhealthy society, and it seems like there’s not a functioning justice system for prosecuting people who foment hatred or commit societal murder, but this could lead to an American Reign of Terror, which would obviously be tragic.
That said, there’s a difference between being glad someone’s gone and declaring war on half of the political spectrum. I won’t say it definitely didn’t happen, but I didn’t see anyone suggesting that we take revenge for that senator, even on Lemmy. Certainly not in as widespread a manner as I’m now seeing it for Charlie Kirk.
null@lemmy.nullspace.lol · 1 pts · 335d
And I'd bet if you read the comments in some fringe, right-leaning boards, you'd have heard people cheering for the governor being killed, or Pelosi being attacked, etc.
What matters is the response of those in charge. People are asking leadership to take action. No one gives a shit about random internet posters.
As an example, Biden put out a statement condemning the assassination attempt against Trump. Trump is calling for retribution against the Left here.

tal@lemmy.today · 4 pts · 336d
Maybe, yeah. But I'm thinking more that it's that they're human, and maybe humans on both sides aren't all that great at holding themselves to that bar. Like, maybe it's not that Threadiverse users are particularly abnormal as people go, and more that the normal person isn't very good at refraining from giving "their side" a pass.
atzanteol@sh.itjust.works · -1 pts · 336d
Oh, you're absolutely right. Both sides absolutely think "I'm going God's righteous work" and that the other side is simply "evil". The hyper-partisanship has been crazy for some time on both sides. And then along comes a sociopath authoritarian (Trump) to just kick it all up to 11...

State level politicians are less likely to have impact outside their state. Nobody knew Hortman. Kirk was known by virtually everyone. Much bigger impact, much bigger reaction.
EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world · 40 pts · 336d
2/4 of the people I talked to yesterday had no idea who he was, so not as big to folks who don’t end up seeing the full stage.
blacklisted@lemmy.org · 23 pts · 336d
Exactly. I think most of America had no idea who he was. My wife had no clue who Kirk was. We even watched that South Park episode where Cartman mimics him. I assumed she knew who he was for some reason.
I've known about him since the 2016 election. I was appalled by his early 20s, raving mad MAGA character. I thought we were stuck with him for decades and decades because he was so young. Nope.
Reverendender@sh.itjust.works · 14 pts · 336d
I also was not super familiar outside recognizing his name. I did a quick read on Wikipedia. Literally the only thing he has ever done in life is to sell hatred and lies to the maga idiots of my country, and he was sadly very successful at it. Also his wife is a former Miss America. Taking this fuckwit off the board is a net positive for human society.

Given that the reaction from media on the left also shows a very different reaction Kirk vs. Hortman, I think your estimation of the difference between the two is not reflective of what'll be the final reaction to these two events.

Witchfire@lemmy.world · 56 pts · 336d
This is something a lot of people don't seem to understand. The right has already been calling for leftists to be dragged to the streets and executed. Celebrating a dead Nazi isn't going to change that.

A single and fatal shot fired from the roof of a tall building 200 yards away while Kirk was under a canopy.
Despite strict lockdown procedures being a normal part of every college campus in 2025, the college officially evacuates the campus and the shooter just walks away.
The FBI quickly catches and releases the wrong suspect twice, and the only description they can offer is a man in dark clothing.
I have to admit this does have government conspiracy written all over it, but guess who currently controls the government?
Kyrgizion@lemmy.world · 33 pts · 336d
Well, that side has been itching to start their civil war, and they're absolutely capable of sacrificing one of their own in order to obtain the license they think they need. Stranger things have happened.
UnderFreyja@lemmy.ca · 17 pts · 336d
Yeah that shot was masterful... conspiracy or not, this was a trained sniper.
Nora@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 30 pts · 336d
Nooot really? I mean I'm not gonna lie I haven't really looked into the exact shooting here but 200 yards isn't really that crazy of a shot. If you assume the shooter was aiming for the neck it becomes a bit of a crazy shot, but I bet they were aiming for the head or body.
I'm sure many people who regularly go hunting could land a 200 yard shot. Heck I bet if you gave someone a few weeks of practice in a range they could consistently land 200 yard shots.
I say this from a place where I actually have fired guns before, including things like Ar-15s and an assortment of hunting rifles. They're just too easy to use.
superglue@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 16 pts · 336d
Not sure it was just the fact they made the shot. They also got away.
Nora@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 13 pts · 336d
For now sure. I doubt the killer will get away with it forever, and even if he does, I won't be shocked if someday we found out that it was just a hunter, who escaped into the local desert/woods/mountains whatever is near that town.
I have little faith in cops in general to do the right job, and with the amount of confusion, "We got him!" "No we didn't!" "We got him!" "Also not this guy!" on the scene it's not astounding that the shooter wasn't caught immediately, at least to me anyway.
superglue@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 17 pts · 336d
Make no mistake someone is going down for this. I get the sense they have no idea who it was so they are just gonna pick someone up after awhile.
Nora@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 336d
Yeah, this wouldn't surprise me.
kbobabob@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 0 pts · 335d
I'd probably aim for the neck to be honest. Gives room above and below for error.
LoafedBurrito@lemmy.world · -8 pts · 336d
The shooter was very professional and shot him in the upper chest. The bullet ricocheted off his armor plate and into his neck. When the bullet hit the vest, it flattened and the jagged edges cut that main artery instantly and he bled out. The shooter was probably about 70-80 feet above Charlie, with 3,000 people around, a tent probably covering Charlies head, and had to flee the scene and blend in with the crowd running.
This sounds like government job all day long.
Kirp123@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 336d
Could have been former military? They used a single shot and then eloped with no trace. Very clean and professional.
Bad_Engineering@fedia.io · 10 pts · 336d
200 yards is anything but masterful, with even a low-end scope its an easy shot if you've spent more than a day or two practicing at a range. The armys qualifying target is a human silhouette set at 300 yards and they are using open iron sights with no magnification or aid whatsoever.
too_high_for_this@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 336d
I'm a hunter. I shoot my guns maybe 3-4 times a year (couple days at the range and a couple actually hunting). Like, less than 100 rounds/year between four guns. So I'm not a great marksman, and definitely not a "trained sniper".
This would be an easy shot for me. At 150 yards, I can shoot a 1/2" grouping, and I have a low-end rifle and scope. You don't have to account for bullet drop or wind at that distance. Just aim and shoot.

ToastedRavioli@midwest.social · 11 pts · 336d
This whole thing reeks of an inside job.
The shooter evaded surveillance and blended in with the crowd, shot him from 200 yards off on top of a multi story building, then jumped off of the building and managed to run away, ditching the rifle in the woods nearby, along with some kind of writing and identifying initials left on ammo and the rifle which could be a simple misdirection. It certainly must not expose the shooter as a liberal or it would be plastered all over the news by now in high detail.
Im not aware of any targeted political assassination in recent memory where the shooter planned their escape so meticulously. This wasnt someone randomly waking up and deciding to kill Kirk. It also definitely wasn’t someone cosplaying that had no idea what they were doing but tried to plan. Regular people dont confidently jump off of multistory buildings without knowing how to do that shit.
Plus the only reports we have from people who were there mention that there was a particular lack of security/police presence for such a divisive event. I think this dude is a manufactured martyr. What moral evidence is there that the MAGA party wouldnt stoop that low? Their entire political compass is defined by scrapping the bottom of the barrel. Not to mention Kirk was an up and coming political threat to the likes of JD Vance or whoever, only 4 years away from being able to jump into a presidential race and probably take the lead…
krashmo@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 336d
You don't remember the United Healthcare shooter getting away? I think you're just really overestimating how hard it is to kill someone and get away from the scene immediately afterwards. Now, not getting caught later is harder to do but it's not like action movies where you have to fight your way past 100 guards to escape. You just run away from the location with everyone else who's running from the gunshots.
I don't know that I believe the whole thing was a conspiracy. It's theoretically possible but so are a lot of really unlikely things. I just think the fact that the shooter got away doesn't say as much as you think it does.

Not my point, unless a member country is attacked by a non-member then members are not required for action! So if a member attacks another member, say ex.: US were to attack Denmark for Greenland or say ex.:Us were to attack Canada, then other members are not required to do jack…
We cannot, absolutely cannot have this inherently undemocratic mess amongst us!

Retribution? To who? Your own party for inviting violence and radicalizing your own populace with hate and intolerance?! How about making a million empty promises and not seeing a single one come to fruition, and now your citizens are seeking retribution from the liars and cheaters who stole their votes to enrich themselves on the backs of the American people, the very people who lifted them into power. Gonna go around punching yourselves in the face?
Smoogs@lemmy.world · 26 pts · 336d
What is it they think they are threatening to do at this point? Taking hostages? Send them to a death camp? Cleanse entire communities? They kinda already came in hot and late to be threatening that there is anything left to lose worth stopping at prior to this point.
Fedizen@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 336d
At this point the right wing description of a leftist is so amorphous it includes everyone and nobody.
So for conservatives it probably means brown people and trans people.

School kids no, politicians what?, LGBTQ+ lol, immigrants whatever, but a POS grifter who dedicated his life to spreading hate, lies, racism, propaganda, protecting pedos, and who has done more damage to this country than most other people. TIME FOR WAR!!!

If anyone has the practice to do that it’s someone who has a long history with guns, which also overlaps with right wing nuts more than lefties.
Besides they were probably trying to hit his giant head.
cowfodder@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 336d
200 yards from an elevated position with a scoped deer rifle is not a hard shot. Hell, I've seen the argument, and it makes sense, that the neck was not the target. If the shooter misjudged the distance or the drop they could have been aiming for the head and it dropped further than expected, or aiming center mass and it dropped less than expected.
Mike_The_TV@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 336d
Why does everyone assume trained sniper just because the shot hit the carotid artery? I'm guessing because they knowledge only comes from movies and games.
pivot_root@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 336d
Many people like guns because of the media they consume but have never touched or shot one.
Tempus_Fugit@midwest.social · 4 pts · 336d
Not really. In the Army every soldier is trained to engage targets at 300 yards with iron sights. Some folks are even accurate up to 500 yards.
