What's something that, after you had it, you immediately wanted another?

Inspired by recently buying a cajon, and my husband immediately buying another for additional living room seating because he loved it.

rob_t_firefly@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 342d

I've always felt that owners of dogs and/or cats should have more than one, so they have one another to interact with when you're not home. They're meant to be social creatures and, assuming they don't happen to incompatibly hate each other (which can happen), it's a lot nicer and healthier for them than just leaving a single pet home alone all day.

A döner in Germany. Everything about it is so good, I ended up eating every other day the next week I was there.

memfree@piefed.social · 21 pts · 343d (2 replies)

My German 'must have more' was the sauerkraut. It is sooo much better there than in the states, and it was slightly different in each town I tried it. My staple meal was whatever the local version was of: sausage, sauerkraut, and wheat beer.

Beacon@fedia.io · 6 pts · 343d (1 reply)

The food in Germany is completely meh imo, EXCEPT for the restaurant sour kraut - holy shit it is sooooo much better than what we get in the states. Someone told me it's because they cook it up in some kind of animal lard

EbenezerScrew@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 343d

We had different experiences then. I've had some meals that I enjoyed quite a bit and still try to replicate. Can't go wrong with a good schnitzel, kraut, or pommes. I also had a dish with potatoes and bacon, i think was called bratkartoffeln that I would fly back tomorrow for.

I always wished for a third or fourth but we effective an out of time. First was I don’t care if it’s boy or girl as long as it’s healthy. Second I wanted boy because two of the same is easier. But another opportunity for a little girl would have been nice. Babies are cool, kids are cool, teens are cool and college kids are cool. I can’t wait to meet the young adults they are becoming

al_Kaholic@lemmynsfw.com · 2 pts · 343d (8 replies)

SkaraBrae@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 343d (7 replies)

al_Kaholic@lemmynsfw.com · 2 pts · 342d (6 replies)

What is it that you like about them? This is a genuine question I'm not a baby kinda person.

SkaraBrae@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 342d (5 replies)

When I was young I was a bit of an arse. Raised by narcissists, I definitely had narcissistic tendencies. It was all I knew. When my first son was born it was a profound moment. I saw the potential in that tiny, helpless baby and his possible futures... Based on what I was and what I had to teach, I realised that those futures weren't great. So I changed. I have tried every day since to be the parent that I wish I had. I have embraced empathy and kindness. I have shed the anger and vanity... And I have forgiven myself for not doing it sooner. I'm not perfect. I make mistakes. When I see a baby I see the potential. It reminds me of how much I've changed, how proud of my kids I am, how much I love my family, how much joy I have in my life.

More or less...

al_Kaholic@lemmynsfw.com · 2 pts · 342d (4 replies)

Do you think you wouldn't care about babies if you were born with empathy and a drive to be a kind gentle teaching human?

SkaraBrae@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 342d (3 replies)

"Born with...?" We are born with nothing but potential. We are a product of our environment, right up until we realise that we are a product of our environment. Then we have a choice; continue as we are, or choose to be something different. It doesn't matter which we choose, though... We can no longer blame our parents, our society, our environment, for who we are.

That is a strange question, though. If I was born with empathy and a drive to be a kind, gentle, teaching human then I think babies would be high on the list of people I would want to spend time with. Kindness begets kindness and we know the world could use more kindness!

thermal_shock@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 343d (7 replies)

Depends on the device, some really don't like rechargeable ones. And for device that get changed so infrequently, like tv remote, use alkaline.

python@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 343d (1 reply)

The brand of rechargeable batteries matters a surprising amount, if your device doesn't play nice maybe try a better brand? My Quest 1 basically only accepts Panasonic Eneloop Pros, I get quite a bit of input lag when using random offbrand rechargeable batteries

guynamedzero@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 6 pts · 343d

If I had to take a guess, it’s probably from the voltage of the battery, if you have a volt meter/multimeter you can test out how the batteries work before putting them in

Sir_Kevin@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 338d

I've switched to lithium batteries. People bulk when they see the price but they're actually cheaper in the long run because they last for ages.

scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech · 1 pts · 342d (3 replies)

I disagree. Very few devices don't work anymore, and for things like remotes rechargeables are a no brainer. One time cost and then charging them even once and you've made your money back. The only device I always choose alkaline is smoke detectors.

thermal_shock@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 342d (2 replies)

Well I have the enelope batteries the someone else suggested, and Amazon basic rechargeable. And devices like my Lazer thermometer, certain mice, certain flashlights tend to not operate fully or as long. Thought the device was just on it's last leg until I popped a generic alkaline in it.

I don't have any super fancy high end rechargeable AA batteries, I've just noticed over the years they're not 100% equal in every device. I use rechargeable when I can, but have disposable alkaline if the device sees limited functionality with rechargeable.

Fluke@feddit.uk · 5 pts · 342d (1 reply)

It's the voltage.

An "Alkaline" AA cell is 1.5v at new and it slowly tapers off as it discharges.

A "rechargeable" AA is 1.2v fully charged, and stays there until about 30% charge (IIRC, it's been decades since I used them) then the voltage falls off a cliff.

From that you can see that a device that uses two AAs is designed to run at 3v, but when you use rechargeables, they only kick out 2.4v.

(They'll do that 2.4v for a lot more AmpHours than the alkaline can do their 3v, and can be stuffed full of electrons to do it over and over again though)

Like everything in engineering it's about the right tool for the job. 💛

  1. Buy less snacks. Say no once at the grocer instead of every day.
  2. If you do have some then they stay in the kitchen. You serve yourself the serving size. Leave the kitchen and eat the cookie. Easier to say no to getting another.

I bought a vibrating sex toy. The battery lasts ~45 minutes. You're intended to stroke with it, but honestly I enjoy just resting it and laying back for a hands-free experience. 45 minutes isn't long enough, so i bought another one to keep it going. Turns out 90 minutes still isn't long enough sometimes, but at that point I have to get it over with and continue my day.

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 342d

Yeah I've only taken a few doses of Adderall and it really comes in "can think to varying degrees" and "call poison control to see if I need to go to fhe hospital". Pill organizers hsve stopped the latter.

RBWells@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 341d

That Adderall is pretty literally speed like you would get as recreational, dextroamphetamine, not sure I would abuse it like taking a high dose, just absolutely confident I would want to stay up.

I remember being able to sleep on speed as a teenager and that felt so good, it just felt so good as a high, a little or a lot. Really bad for your heart, but apparently Adderall at the regular dose is good for your brain, protective vs. dementia. As is coffee, and exercise which are what I use to medicate.

mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 23 pts · 343d (2 replies)

Mine was, oddly enough, LSD. It’s not even physically addictive. I didn’t even particularly enjoyed tripping, but in my day-to-day life I have aphantasia; I can’t visualize anything.

If I asked you to close your eyes and picture an apple, then rate 1-5 how realistic you could make it look, most people would probably land somewhere around a 3 or a 4. Not photorealistic, but it would at least be recognizable as an apple and convey the important parts. A few artists or particularly visual people may land on a photorealistic 5. The people who are more biased towards speech (like an internal monologue) may land closer to a 2, like a rushed sketch, or even a 1 where it’s just a coarse outline and some color.

I land on a 0. I just see the backs of my eyelids. I can describe an apple to you. I can tell you what it smells like, what it tastes like, what color I would want it to be, how big it is, how heavy it is, what it feels like to crunch into it and get a little bit of the peel stuck between your teeth, et cetera… But I can’t visualize it.

I always thought the “picture yourself doing/going/working/etc {x}” types of things were just a figure of speech. Like if I was in elementary school and an art teacher said to picture a thing then draw it, I would just skip the first part. I’d still use my imagination before putting anything on paper, but it wouldn’t be visual.

But with LSD, that’s different. I can actually visualize things. Not particularly well, because everything is wobbling around like it’s made of tiny ocean waves… But I can do it. I quickly found that creative outlets were much easier when I could actually plan things out visually before putting them on paper. It was like I had been stuck using black and white paints my entire life, and then someone handed me some red, green, and blue for the first time. I also quickly realized how boring life was when I couldn’t just conjure images out of the ether at will.

Sadly, shrooms (which is commonly compared to “like doing LSD then smoking a blunt” in terms of feeling) doesn’t do it for me. I guess it doesn’t activate the same parts of my brain. But for whatever reason, LSD specifically allows me to overcome my aphantasia. I haven’t done it in years now, but I occasionally get the whim to try it again. Not enough to actually bother tracking down a new plug, but enough to muse about it while I type out shit like this.

SigmarStern@discuss.tchncs.de · 7 pts · 343d

I feel you. I took a very low dose of MDMA at a festival and I was euphoric or hight or anything. But for the first time in ever I had no filter issues. All the noises that drive me crazy all the time, just didn't bother me. Same with touch. It just cured it. For one evening.
