We actually live in a world now in which the President of the United States explicitly states his intent to overtly violate the first amendment and the media just repeats it as if nothing of any note is going on.

I think we actually get to understand now how Hitler came to power. I remember in school, I was mystified how such an hateful man could become a leader of a country. Now I understand.
History will most likely repeat itself and humanity needs a big war to once again remember what hate leads to.
It just sucks for the ones who already learned that lesson from basic history.

The media reports on it, attempting to do so from a neutral point of view.
I actually appreciate that the professional media is still attempting to stick to a neutral point of view. If they abandon that, you get media like MSNBC and Fox News where every single news story is discussed from a certain political point of view. That just sorts people into camps that listen to the news source that agrees with their perceived notions, which then radicalizes them even more.
If people can't agree on a basic set of facts, then there's no point to having a democracy. A media that covers the facts with as little bias as possible is essential to that working.
That isn't to say that I think the media is doing a great job. The big media companies that are owned by the oligarchs are doing especially badly. When Trump does something like this, responsible media that's attempting to be unbiased should at least connect historical dots, like other times that presidents have threatened the media, and what the results of that have been.

Short form video is the single best propaganda machine there is. You don’t get context, so it’s easy to manipulate events. Also, for some reason, people really fall for the “authority” of some rando talking into a camera like they know what the hell they’re talking about.
Every time somebody shows me a TikTok video as a reference or to make a point, the information is either fake or completely incorrect.
Not to mention, The algorithm feeds you more of these talking heads and makes you think it’s the general consensus
dickalan@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 325d
These are all good points, but I fact check and I don’t fall for stupid easily shareable meme bullshit, everybody’s algorithm is their own so yeah echo chambers are easy to get into but it’s mostly just slice of life type content. That’s the really good stuff

Yeah, I get it different people learn differently, but the search function on TikTok is pretty good. They got a good algorithm behind it, don’t just write it off, at least fuck around with it before you throw it in the trash, please I’m begging you. You only have to give it about 10 minutes before the algorithm starts getting in its groove and that would be a good time before it’s an under American control just to look at what it was

I know this sounds sarcastic, but I'm genuinely curious as I have never used TikTok at all. It there any way to verify the stuff that's being shown? Do news accounts link to articles or any supporting information?
All I've ever really seen from people sharing stuff has been new typical meme stuff and AI generated crap that people keep sending me thinking it's real.
How can you tell if what you're seeing is real?
nieminen@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 323d
The good "creators" to follow for news generally provide a summary in Tiktok, then if you want to verify or learn more they have additional information and sources in their other locations (substack is a big one)
I can generally tell if it's AI generated, and if I have any suspicion then I try to find other reports and real sources via Google searches and whatnot. Like I didn't believe the gold trump statue, or the trump and Epstein statue were real.

So, Trump effectively nationalized TikTok, valued at $300b. He sells it to friendly oligarchs for $15b. So far, this is basically the post-USSR playbook, and how Roman Abravmovich, Alisher Usmanov, Vladimir Lisin, etc. got so rich.
But it might piss off his oligarch buddies if he drives all the users off TikTok making what seemed like a steal into something worthless instead.

vacuumflower@lemmy.sdf.org · 5 pts · 325d
In ex-USSR that happened as something destructive, but in USA honestly it's normal, using institutional pressure to help friendly businesses. Trump is unusual only in how grotesque he is in his position, but history saw Talleyrand.
And US sanctioned Japan just because some of its businesses couldn't compete, which didn't kill Japanese car industry, but hurt Japanese computer industry, and sent Japan into recession from which it didn't quite recover.
About driving users off - that doesn't really happen unless you intentionally break everything. VKontakte be the experiment showing this, except TG was later made based on VK makers' experience with social stuff, and was very successful, and is now basically the most convenient messaging\social platform. When something FOSS manages to reproduce the experience of TG, then FOSS messaging and social systems stand a chance. So - some of the life moved from VK to TG, but it's more of VK's experience stagnating and being too complex and overloading, not of people fleeing it.

dickalan@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 325d
It being outside of the United States and outside of United States control was an absolute benefit for me, What was your reason for hating it while it was under Chinese control?
blattrules@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 325d
There are multiple reasons for me. First and foremost is the data collection that they’ve been accused of; I know American companies do the same thing, but there’s something more nefarious about a state run data collection scheme than a public company collecting data to sell you ads, which I’m also trying to avoid as much as possible. Next, I don’t support their labor practices - using child, slave (Uyghurs) and cheaper labor is a big deterrent. I realize that some level of that is unavoidable with the way our society is based, but I don’t really need another social media outlet in my life anyway, so it’s a really easy cut for me.
Oh yeah, also because a state run social media app is something that I feel is an easy way for that state to push propaganda.
BrainInABox@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 324d
Lol. But American labour practices are just fine with you then?
Also, fun fact, even after years of accusations, nobody has been able to find actual credible evidence of "Uyghur slaves". Meanwhile, penal slavery is just an acceptable norm in the US

mycodesucks@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 325d
They're also MUCH more susceptible to misinformation and propaganda than the "in-between" generations. They aren't as affected by traditional media, sure, but their new media sources are heavily propagandized, with visibility manipulated by the worst people in the world. They might HEAR about the dangers of misinformation or propaganda in the periphery, but with their primary interface being a handful of apps on a mobile device, there's not much they can do about it without extensive education they aren't getting.

BrainInABox@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 324d
How is that any different from older generations
Soup@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 324d
Because the person I replied was trying to say that the person they replied to was falling for propaganda and compared it to call millenials lazy. We know for a fact that millenials generally work harder, and for less, than the older generations that were/are doing the complaining. In this case, we the older generation is complaining about Gen Z not being nearly as progressive as one would expect, even to the point where we can say they actually have a problem with conservatism, and the statistics back that up as fact.
TL;DR: “millenials are lazy” is made up to try to pay us less despite the statistics showing it to be a huge lie and “GenZ has way too many conservatives” is an observable fact complete with actual numbers.
BrainInABox@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 324d

After repetitive exposure to this propaganda (repetition priming), the people were beginning to believe and stand up for what each respective government had been flashing before their eyes, without them even knowing it.
https://sites.psu.edu/psych256sp18003/2018/03/04/h/
The fact of being exposed to propaganda and misinformation, repeatedly and continuously, has a psychological affect over time.
The individual must not be allowed to recover, to collect himself, to remain untouched by propaganda during any relatively long period, for propaganda is not the touch of the magic wand. It is based on slow, constant impregnation. It creates convictions and compliance through imperceptible influences that are effective only by continuous repetition. It must create a complete environment for the individual, one from which he never emerges.

regedit@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 325d
It's the incel/red-/black-pill bullshit. I am an older millennial, turned 41 yesterday, in fact, and I have noticed the split in the gen-Z generation. At some point a lot stopped trying to grow as a person and started blaming women and minorities for why they were single and unfavorable to their preferred mates/society. Accountability and integrity just sort of stopped mattering to them when it became easier and more socially acceptable to be a shitty person and still gain fans/clout/etc.
Then comes along all these 'bros' who sell them this idea that their problem is just not being a big enough dick and being rich, loud, and large, Eden if you have to fake it until you make it. They promote the debunked study of alpha males and champion the grind, self-made mentality while pinning the blame for their future failures on outside factors like immigration and higher ed.
I had high hopes that we could unfuck the world together, with the leadership of gen-Z, but I didn't think republican enough about how far the backslide would be. Now, I just expect to see the world crumble as the younger gen are lambs to the slaughter for the wars, sports, and land grabs of the ultra-rich.

Why do they need said nation bankrupt I don't know, maybe to make it fail while the failure will still be not too gigantic to recover from, and maybe for yet another pump-and-dump scheme, except this time with a country and not an industry. Depends on how optimistic you are about their motives.

Trump has wanted to destroy the United States since we captured Epstein in 2011 and shut down the best of his trafficking ring. It was never the same after that and that’s why he was suddenly so outspoken about Obama.

When the USSR collapsed, it made some well-connected millionaires into billionaires. When the USA collapses, it makes billionaires into trillionaires.
vacuumflower@lemmy.sdf.org · 1 pts · 322d
It made very different people millionaires and billionaires. Some local businessmen (a very American type in stereotypes, something between a conman and a normal mom and pop business owner), some professors with good understanding of mathematics involved, some translators for big people, some red directors who converted their Soviet power into new power.
And in my childhood I thought they are all thieves, my worldview is more nuanced now. Life is complex.
People talk of KGB as of the main important target of all potential lustrations in the future, but Eugene Kaspersky is KGB, and of people meaningful in Russia he's honestly very fine. Some people talk of Yeltsin as someone good, but he was a Politburo member. People who remember general Lebed sometimes think he was killed because he was an honest patriotic politician, and he surely made the impression with that simple Soviet flat with a rug on the wall, that Siberian manner of speech, those pacifist and humanist things he would say in interviews (he managed to say without accusations and conflict that people who are mafia or terrorists or both for one government are friends for another and this is business as usual ; he also managed to say without losing any dignity or surrendering any important point that Russians can't fight more wars after the XX century and that people fight to live in peace, these seem pretty obvious, but some obvious things don't sound good on TV), except when he was made governor of his part of the world, he quickly became, eh, a normal governor - with new realty and a lover in Moscow, with very expensive idiotic PR actions (like that campaign with Alain Delon in the middle of a depressive Soviet junkyard with a Lenin statue endorsing Lebed), and so on, somehow the memory of him omits those few last years of his life, before the helicopter crash.
Now when I think about it, I didn't think they are all thieves, I knew life is complex and that I don't personally know all these people.
So - American billionaires don't want to be trillionaires, I think. They want to be princes. Perhaps patricians. Or maybe mandarins. The issue is that they are blind to how all three things existed, using them as labels for their own dream of power over humans without complications. Princes were subject to God, Pope and their suzerain, multiple such sometimes, like in Brittany or Holsten or ... Patricians obeyed the customs of their republic, whose first citizen usually was a plebeian - the man who was first named "first citizen" notably was, and his cognomen is now used to refer to emperors. Mandarins lived in the kingdom where the only unbreakable law was the mandate of heaven, and weren't considered better people - certainly no more than as far as their emperor had it.
I believe we will endure. I don't know about the USA, but maybe it's for the best that this project goes to version 2.0 .

Russia wanted the us bankrupt and as corrupt as them.
vacuumflower@lemmy.sdf.org · 2 pts · 325d
Russia is 1) not that powerful by far, 2) its elites, those very ones spoken about when expressing these conspiracy theories, are pissing hot water from a mere hint of being friends with any US administration.
They have sort of an inferiority complex, there was recently a damned TV report, apparently, about an American diplomat visiting a cafe and ordering a cheburek (Central Asian street food). It's so much bootlicking that one can confidently say Russia's elites are much bigger US fans than Russians in average.
They might be unintentionally making the effect you described upon the US, while trying to somehow become part of its processes, but it's a small nudge compared to the more serious reasons.
I think this is because the people who are now Russia's elite came to power in the 90s, a lot of ex-Soviet people looked at the situation pretty simply - as in "we were the losing superpower in this cold war thing, now it's ended and we are friends, so we are going to become like America in those movies with white middle class people all owning cars and houses", and those of them who were doing politics, apparently, wanted to have their own political system as "cool" (or whatever, some immeasurable feeling) as the American one.
The Iron Curtain was a huge mistake, people who put it in place were thinking in 30s categories when the 30s were long gone. People inside thought that they only put barriers before you to protect something you'd want to have. A generation of Soviet people grew with that feeling, where everything Soviet was boring and bad, and everything Western magical and good. It wasn't even about freedom or morality. Just about "coolness". People breaking the USSR in the 80s and 90s knew that the world around it isn't virtuous and kind, but they thought it's "cooler". Everyone thinks they'd do well when put into an adventure, when safe. Nobody thinks they'll be some guy who gets eaten by a crocodile on the second page, or a coward, or an idiot, or a sucker.
So. When the Russian "wide mass" realized that for the West it consists of suckers and crocodile fodder, it became disillusioned and the wound healed, except for some rare idiots who kept believing into that picture, not being exposed to reality.
When the Russian elites realized that, they just decided to lower the bar, and be content with playing US sometimes, and getting US citizenship for themselves and their children, and being there often, and playing with US politics. I don't think it's directed at somehow corrupting and undoing the US, simply not enough power. They are just regularly touching in the shop something they can't afford to buy.

Nazi Germany had a bad geographical location. Strong powers to the east and west, including the UK as unsinkable aircraft carrier and staging ground for invasion. The USA has none of these issues. It’s surrounded by big oceans and militarily weak neighbors. A naval invasion of the USA is basically impossible.
The USA can do whatever they want in all countries in the Americas. Not even a worldwide coalition could stop that.
The USA could invade and annex Mexico and Canada quite easily.
The USA can also afford to intervene military across the globe, get stuck in a quagmire for years, and it doesn’t endanger their control over their own country.

Their intelligence probably wants to know what is trendy in America so it can better appeal to us and influence our elections to serve their interests, but Beijing is probably not concerned at all with you or I as individuals. But if they can get us to vote for a candidate they support by showing us the parts of that candidate that we agree with, we can be used as a tool by Beijing. Now Washington wants that power.

What would he care if it kills a lot of use. Some will stay, even if it becomes just an echo chamber, there will be users who don't leave and slowly get fed more and more content that changes their bias.
A propaganda machine does have to reach 100% of the population, it just needs to pluck small percentages that were on the outskirts and hold the current believers in a situation where they believe this is better than whatever bologna scenario they make up would happen if they weren't doing this. America is MUCH safer place to live today than it was when I was born back in 89'.
Yet a large portion of the population does not believe that, because they throw murders in people's faces through every facet of our lives to make people feel afraid and use security as an excuse to gain further control over people's rights.
Anyone who thinks "I could leave my doors unlocked back in the 1990s and I can't today" has been fooled.
Anyone who thinks subways, trains, or public transit isn't multiple times safer than getting into a car and driving to work, has been fooled.
And social media as well as news stations want us to be angry and scared, because it gets people engaged. Engagement makes them money. Happy people who feel safe go outside and go to the beach, play sports, go hiking, go to movies, join a book club, have a hobby of some sort. None of those things make news outlets money. Social media could, because they could sell ad slots to people who sell products for those hobbies.. but I guess it doesn't make as much.

Thankyou. I'm right now watching Internet Today's coverage of it, which also confirmed it. There's also this interesting snippet from the CNBC article they quote from:

Man, I just thought about the AI deep fakes. I never had a Tiktok (and left any remaining social media a long time ago) and I applaud anybody who is jumping ship right now. But the brain drain is extremely dangerous with the AI stuff.
REDACTED@infosec.pub · 2 pts · 324d
Everyone has those friends who keep sharing you stuff from tiktok. I also happen to be pretty good with AI, run my own local models and all that (I know lemmy hates AI, but just for context..). The thing I've noticed is that by the each passing month, they keep sending me more and more AI generated or edited stuff, it's rapidly on the rise. If it has become so good only people with trained eye can spot it, how will tiktok look in 2 years?
seanziepples@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 324d
The AI videos are becoming very prevalent. If you didn't know what to look for you may not recognize it off the bat. It's wild.

And it might look nice when you over there are done with the circus and then done with killing each other.

I love how we're all fucked because boomers will never die. Honestly, Gen X has a lot more folks that let us down. It doesn't matter the generation really. I know a pregnant gen Z, and all I can think about is how her kid, according to the popular generational theory, is going to be the next cycle of boomer. That's probably why many young gen Zs are a bunch of little assholes. But then she was a screw up, and my gen, the millineals as everyone knows works harder and is still called lazy and had our own screw ups. Generations are what they are but having no chance at happiness due to the rich controlling every goddamn asset is a new kind of fucked we all have to endure.

I knew this shit would be abused eventually. A year and a half and this publicly though. With how bipartisan support for this there was in congress and publicly, an instance of leaopards eating their face for those certain that safeguards would work/future bills would pass to improve the safeguards (how often does that ever happen? Post-9/11?)

And Democrats wanted to ban it for going against their narrative. Let me guess blue conservatives, should I be on my knees thanking the DNC for being ever so slightly less SHIT then the world's lowest bar, the republican party?
Fuck the two party system. The USA deserves trump.
buttnugget@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 325d
I’m not quite following you. First, I never heard about Democrats wanting to ban it for their narrative; I only know about the bipartisan ban. Is that what you mean? Second, what are you talking about with the thanking the DNC thing? What does that have to do with this?
Lastly, I strongly disagree that we deserve Trump. Nobody deserves right wing lunacy, especially not a large society that did not uniformly support his candidacy in any way. Do you think Germany deserved Hitler?
