It's like the grocery stores that have digital price tags on them that they can adjust at anytime. They totally going to do surge pricing and other bullshit. I complete expect oh you picked up that item? Purchase just gotta up as soon as it's touched
I see where your coming from but not everyone has the space to seed a torrent. I think those that use stremio and understand torrenting will one day, if they have enough storage contribute to seeding. I'm running on 256gb here T-T
Caching a torrent isn't leeching. Like the other person said, it actually helps because it prevents multiple people from doing a hit and run. The torrent only needs to get cached once, and then everyone can just directly download that file, bypassing the torrent entirely.
There is no guarantee, because they're not seeding. There's one hit-and-run, then the torrent is cached on a server for anyone to directly download. Again, IMO one hit-and-run is still better than thousands.
Stremio is free, the service you need to cache the torrents (Real-Debrid) isn't. It's about $/€3 per month, which is still cheaper than a VPN (which you need for torrents but not for Stremio/Debrid).
Wait, so if I get this right, stremio has nothing to do with debrid on its own. So if you just use Stremio, as is, you are leeching a torrent you don't seed?
Correct. Without a Debrid service, you stream the torrent directly from the tracker. It's also slow AF for all but the most popular content so you really don't want to go without.
(In my experience most torrents are already cached on Debrid, BTW, so there's no hit and run since you're just downloading the file directly from a server.)
Nah fuck all that. Just get Stremio + Torrentio and pair it with Real-Debrid. No fucking around with downloading torrents and building a library. Just pick what you want to watch, and watch it. Works like any other streaming platform, except everything's in one place.
Problem with that is, what happens when Stremio gets shut down like every other illegal streaming platform to date? What happens when they no longer want to host the stuff I like?
I like having the files locally, so that when streaming platforms die, og just decide not to waste server space on the stuff I like, I can still watch the shows and movies that are no longer avaliable anywhere.
I won't really fight anyone suggesting "Yarr-harr" approaches, but if you're just looking for something to watch and legality becomes a hurdle as you describe: Libraries offer a huge backlog of stuff (watched some old Disney stuff I'd targeted, without sending the mouse money) as well as some digital services. It should be pretty easy to rip the DVDs they have on offer too.
The problem with Stremio is that it relies on torrents, but only caches the content you’re watching. Essentially, it puts you into a permanent leecher mode, and rarely contributes any meaningful seeding because the content is deleted shortly after you’re done watching it.
Stremio users are the libertarians of the piracy world. They’re staunchly independent, but also completely reliant on the infrastructure that seeders have set up and maintain. They want all of their content available conveniently, without actually putting in any of the “pay it forward” work that piracy relies on to stay healthy.
Essentially, if everyone used Stremio, nobody would be able to use Stremio. Stremio is only possible because of the people who actually seed.
I'd argue that you're not really hurting the torrent, since most torrents are already pre-cached. It only needs to be cached once for thousands to enjoy the file.
Yeah it's not ideal, but one hit and run isn't going to make a dent in the grand scheme of things.
Also (and this is a genuine question): Why would I care? They don't earn anything from me. Does their political affiliation matter when it comes to sourcing copyrighted material?
The Amazon Prime model is the scummiest. At least Netflix doesn't bait you into a subscription just to then tell you actually the show you wanted to see costs even more.
The Netflix equivalent of this is that the show just disappears (the Marvel shows) or you get the first seasons and not the last or even the last and not the first (at one time Prime had part of Lucifer and Netflix had the rest).
The only reason that it went from free to paid (instead of just disappearing) is that they lost the licence for streaming it under Prime Video but they didn’t lose the licence for selling it.
I doesn't really make a difference whether it was the actual platform or a higher decision; the end result is pissed off fans that turn to piracy instead of giving you money. Then those fans give you even less in the future. There will always be some that just say 'fuck it' and pay up, but it's diminishing returns.
That's the main reason I switched to Navidrome and downloaded a ton of flacs. No one's stopping me from drinking whiskey in the bathtub listening to sad music during my monthly breakdown.
Because music streaming services compete (for the most part) based on experience and features not content. This happened after the market plummeted for music sales. TV and movies are still in the stage where everyone is competing with content by having exclusives while their services suck dick with few features, horrible UX, and ads. Im sure at some point they'll go the route of music and games where youre not forced to sign up to a specific service to see a specific show, but who knows when that'll happen.
I mean, for Lucifer it made sense, since first three seasons were under Fox (and different licensing in different regions). God, I wish Netflix didn't "save" that show. At least it would have ended on a cliff hanger instead of a total destruction of the entire show. shakes fist angrily 4 years after the show has ended
Absolutely agree. When I got out of college, I was like "I have some money finally, I'll support the shows and movies I want to watch by actually buying them online outright and streaming everything else legally!"
And then several of the things I "bought" got removed from my library several years later.
Then instead of 2 or 3 streaming platforms, there were suddenly 6.
Then every streaming service kept shuffling around my favorite shows.
And suddenly, the experience of paying for the content I wanted to watch became way too cumbersome.
I mean those video players lazy load so it probably just requested the next chunk and got the "you gotta pay response" same as if you returned to a specific spot with a link after a long time.
Hey, long as you're working on it. I've been working on ripping my entire music collection from Spotify the past couple months before I tell them to go fuck themselves for the ICE ads, after ~10 years of paying for their service. I'm aiming to be done before January.
Prime does this a lot where the first season, maybe first 2 are free, but then the rest is paid only. And that's with a subscription.
They're the second worst streaming service with the service itself being loaded with dark patterns. The only one I think is worse is Paramount because the app literally never even worked for me.
One of the German channels makes you pay for random episodes. So you'll be able to watch episode 3, 9 and 11 in a season but you have to pay for the rest.
Yes but I was finishing episode 9 of the 2nd season going into 10. Then poof, whole season 2 is $29.99. For a show with a bad rating probably because it's so niche if you're not from LA it's a complete dud.
The CBS/Paramount app has always had so much tracking in it that it’s blocked by most PiHole like devices and software. Even if you pay for the no ads tier they still won’t play the video if they can’t hit the ad server.
Sometimes Prime Video in Germany also used to have only the dubbed versions of tv shows and movies. It was infuriating that I couldn’t watch the original versions. The service was also generally buggy and poorly made. I canceled Prime because it was so bad.
Yeah, there's stuff under the subscription and stuff you pay for (although you can pay for anything if you're not a subscriber iirc)
It gives them a perverse incentive to remove shows from the subscription tier if lots of people are watching it. You also get shows where the first few seasons are in the sub, and then suddenly switches to pay for.
I tried watching Pluribus on Prime where it was listed. It played the first episode enough to get me hooked, and told me I needed to pay to watch the rest. Straight to jellyfin we go.
Pluribus was such a complete disappointment for me... I don't know ... ok well yea I do know why most people like it. Though for me, I know way too much sfience and tech, so the many parts that are not realistic stand out and fly in the face of Vince's very realistic style of presentation. That massive juxtaposition royally fucks the whole show for me. If I didn't literally know better, I'd definitely be in the, "wow, cool story bro!" camp.
Only had youtube cutting of a clip halfway because it was suddenly set to private. The amount of clips I put in Watch Later to have them disappear is also too high. Stop recommending slop that disappears later, stupid alghorithm.
I’ve wondered if people’s watch lists are prioritized to be pay videos. The first time I saw this I wondered why my watch list was mostly pay videos: I must have misunderstood something. So I created it again with only free shows. A year later it was mostly pay
Cancel all subscriptions which are just "We own the copyright to music, tv, movies etc" and find your digital art through simple file sharing networks on the internet. FOR EXAMPLE:
Stremio + Torrentio + Real Debrid (If you don't want to pay for real debrid it still works just can be a bit slower) A torrent streaming solution for most/all tv shows and movies.
Soulseek, a file sharing platform mostly for music. I have yet to find a decent lossless streaming solution.
If you want games, Ebooks, or other kinds of media, type fmhy.net into your browser and they have a tonne of different media types and links for you to choose from. If your just starting check out there "adblocking and blocking trackers" section its a decent start for making sure you don't get caught or anything.
After HBO was taken over by David “Piece of Shit” Zaslav multiple shows and movies disappeared while I was in the middle of watching them. I haven’t resubscribed since
we were in the middle of one of our favorite scifis when that happened. now we own the box set. then we realized it was the only reason we had that subscription. oops to them i guess.
The annoying thing I've noticed is that they have been making the last season of shows cost money. I was like what just happened, I thought there was a whole nother episode
Buy a nas, start storing your own media. All subscription services will remove content, raise prices and introduce more ads. Its not a question of if but when.
Also, you are like a child sucking the capitalism tit when you use these services. Take your pride back.
Change to Linux when you are in the spirit. Grow up and join the adults.
Most people dont do that themselves. They just download. Some people, specially in Russia, just stream movies from sites that exist. I dont do that but its popular.
I know how you feel, I searched so long for Encounters of the Spooky kind and I still dont have all of Mr, Vampire.
But also, check archive.org and such. Sometimes stuff ends up in the weirdest places on the internet.
I'm on Linux now but why the hell would I want to pay to store media? If I want to watch something I just find it online, 1tb seed it a bunch then leap.. The nas collectors almost want piracy to die to complete their orgasm.
For me its because a lot of movies from the 80s and 90s are hard to find. Not everything exists online anymore. Popular movies generally do but ive had issues finding some things.
And then fast forward another 30 years. Will good movies from today still be there and will we be able to get them as easily?
I just store it so I dont have to worry. :)
If you mainly watch modern movies, then this is a not a problem. But I think a lot of modern movies are really stupid. :)
I watched the new running man and couldnt believe how dumb he acted.
The only thing you need to be careful of is falling out of touch with modern life because you're still watching 90s films in the 2050s. Part of my enjoyment of the niche entertainment I consumed in the 90s came from seeking out new people to enjoy it with, searching for it on the proto-internet, and forming communities around the experience of watching it. I find that nowadays I can watch the film again but it just doesn't bring the same kind of enjoyment that it did when I watched it 30 years ago. I hope I live long so I can see more new entertainment options come out and try those too, and my dvd collection gets lost and broken and water damaged from being left in the closet where it belongs.
Lot's of people talking about piracy, and I'm all about it. However, I'm here to talk about Mr. Mayor. What a fantastic show. It was funny, it was heartfelt, and it had character growth. Pirate the shit out of it.
You need to set yourself up with radarr and sonarr. Get into torrents or usenet. And finally pick either plex, emby, or jellyfin. The movie one didnt exactly change my world since I had to pick the stuff, but shows one was crazy! Add the show and gets all existing stuff and will download the news ones when released. Its especially great the following year when you didnt even know it was coming back and boom you already have it. Bonus points, I use android app nzb360 on local network to connect to all those apps and it shows whats new so I can easily add stuff. I can even connect to my download app so it shows everything in 1 spot.
I would never pay for prime video, they are shit. I pay for amazon prime because Its cheper than paid delivery and they give me prime video for free because that's the only way anyone would watch it.
I recently discovered it's super easy to run qbittorrent in a docker container with the network forced through gluetun which ensures a VPN connection without impacting the global network connection.
That happens all the time on prime video. it happened to me watching the old school unsolved mysteries. Good thing I have it on my OSMC Pi's 128gb drive.
You mean it when to "They don't want my money anymore since they removed it from the tier I was paying into, so they won't mind me getting it in other ways"
Telling someone that they are the problem is insulting, whether you like it or not.
I agree, continuing to feed the machine is not helping; but there are more constructive ways to express the same point. Help people learn and get comfortable with better solutions, don't scold them for following what they've grown up to know as 'right'. That's not how you get people on your side.

not true, it does sort of the opposite:
debrid services cache torrents in order to provide them at high speed to clients (that's why they aren't free: they need data storage).
this is a good thing, because it means the swarm is only taxed once per file, instead of constantly by potentially hundreds of streamers.
from stremio's FAQs:
potustheplant@feddit.nl · 1 pts · 248d
So you're telling me that they're offering a paid service for free. That makes me trust and want to use it even less.
EDIT: Turns out that stremoo doesn't use debrid. That's something a stremio user can configure. By default, you do leech torrents and never seed then.

Pechente@feddit.org · 5 pts · 249d
Sometimes Prime Video in Germany also used to have only the dubbed versions of tv shows and movies. It was infuriating that I couldn’t watch the original versions. The service was also generally buggy and poorly made. I canceled Prime because it was so bad.

Man, that's not ok
Blackmist@feddit.uk · 6 pts · 248d
Yeah, there's stuff under the subscription and stuff you pay for (although you can pay for anything if you're not a subscriber iirc)
It gives them a perverse incentive to remove shows from the subscription tier if lots of people are watching it. You also get shows where the first few seasons are in the sub, and then suddenly switches to pay for.
They're an easy cancel.
nerdschleife@lemmy.zip · 21 pts · 249d
I tried watching Pluribus on Prime where it was listed. It played the first episode enough to get me hooked, and told me I needed to pay to watch the rest. Straight to jellyfin we go.

this is something apple does, the first episode of most of their shows is free. surprised to hear they’re on amazon tbh

Amazon has Apple shows, I think you pay for your subscription through them instead of Apple? I see Starz shit on there too.
MotoAsh@piefed.social · -1 pts · 249d
Pluribus was such a complete disappointment for me... I don't know ... ok well yea I do know why most people like it. Though for me, I know way too much sfience and tech, so the many parts that are not realistic stand out and fly in the face of Vince's very realistic style of presentation. That massive juxtaposition royally fucks the whole show for me. If I didn't literally know better, I'd definitely be in the, "wow, cool story bro!" camp.

FridaySteve@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 248d

I agree, continuing to feed the machine is not helping; but there are more constructive ways to express the same point. Help people learn and get comfortable with better solutions, don't scold them for following what they've grown up to know as 'right'. That's not how you get people on your side.
