But if they sneakily say "do you want a 400ml CUP" and later on you decide what goes inside the cup, then yes.
Also in Europe it would be totally normal to respond with measurements. 200 ml, 0.33, and half liter are the standard ones. In the UK there's pints and half pints.
If somebody just pointed at the container for me instead of telling me the size I would probably consider it weird. Maybe it's normal in fast food joints.
I believe in America the corporation is given the edge. “We didn’t say you’d get 400ml of coke, we said a medium was 400ml.” Is a legally viable argument. Its only false advertising if taking the statement at face value is provably false, a la “Red Bull gives you wings” was changed to “Red bull gives you wiiiings” because the original was provably false, and the second one can be defended as “wiiiings isn’t a real word so it doesn’t mean anything”

Meaning McDonald's expects you to get ~24oz of soda in a large(32oz) drink.
Their pouring system is automated most places, and many of them have intentionally moved the in restaurant dispensers behind the counter as well, making sure it reduces refills and means they will regulate the amount of ice you get as well.
So they look huge, but really you get less soda than there is in a Gatorade bottle. (28oz).

Bonus: their clothes are also bigger. I'm an L in Brazil but in the US I had to buy M.
The "European" sizes are just the normal sizes we used to have in the USA. Gradually they increased the sizes to sell more dranks by default. Current "small" size drinks are just the former medium size cups and so on

The cup is about 70% filled with ice before the drink goes in. I work in hospice and drive around to patients homes all day. I'll occasionally hit McDonald's in the morning as I start my day (bacon, egg and cheese bagel with a large coke zero sugar.) Unless my car is getting hot in the middle of summer, that drink will last about 4 hours with some ice left over. If it's hot enough out to melt faster, well, I'm probably drinking it faster anyway because it's hot out.
Not at all. The ice isn't melting THAT fast. By the time I get towards the end it's just a matter of how much has melted and how thirsty I am lol. If it doesn't taste good, I stop drinking.
Visiting Texas, I was absolutely blown away at the number of people carrying around a 3L bottle (yes THREE liters) of sugar water with the cap held between their knuckles.
Time of day did not seem to matter, people were sucking them down at 7:00 in the morning.

Yeah, that sounds about right. I remember seeing them when I was… well, about 20 years younger or there about. I remember them being pointless because by the time you go around to the second half of the bottle the soda had gone flat. Mind you, this was also after it’d been ‘sipped’ on for a week. As a kid I was only allowed one small glass a day.
I was a bit of a sniff head for a while but didn’t drink and all my mates must have been drinking 10+ litres plus of beer and some spirits. Easy a crate of Stella for each person.
We didn’t when I worked there. We put enough ice in to make it full. Ask for no ice and it’s like 90% full. We just pressed a button. If I was working I’d top up the no ice folk. I’d also let you keep your free coffee stamps after claiming your coffee for free.
Another fun comment, movie theaters used to have absolutely gigantic portions (yes, even bigger than now). Cobb Theaters had a soda called "The Cobbster" which was 80oz. It was basically a popcorn bucket full of soda with a straw. And it came with free refills, it was the only size to do so. I imagine that was because only a maniac would actually come back for a refill. I did it once to "get my value", but I couldn't actually drink any more.
When I worked at Taco Bell, I would make food like how I would want it and I would ice and fill drinks how I'd want it: just enough ice and filled to the brim with no overflow or mess. The trick is to tilt the cup and overfill it, so that the foam rolls out of the cup as you're filling it, then untip it as you top it off. The momentum of the overflow keeps the side clean if you do it right, kind the same energy as snapping off a paper towel or toilet paper from a roll one-handed.
I can do 1L over a period of time... in a plastic bottle. If US cups are like they are elsewhere they eventually get eaten away by the liquid and start dripping, which seems to go against the implied notion that you can just order a big one and take it with you to keep drinking elsewhere.
Good to know. In fairness, I don't think you can get that much Coke in anything but plastic. They don't do 1L cans and there are thick plastic bottles starting at 500ml, so thin plastic may actually be better.
I do think there's a 1L glass bottle, but it's more of a special edition thing. I don't think it's easy to find in supermarkets and I havent' seen it anywhere else. And for any soft drink other than specifically Coca Cola it's mostly just plastic for anything above 500 mil.

This would be regional. Some of the new "mixology" machines offer sparkling water options. Most American machines offer carbonated soda water (tap water with carbonation added, no flavors or minerals really added)

We grew up very similarly, my mother, as bad a cook as she was, she really had some good ideas and she tried
We were each allowed one 2L of soda each 2 weeks (payday for Dad). Oh and one 200g thing of chips.
Eat it all in one sitting like my brother would do and then have a giant burp. Or meter them out for 2 weeks.
I thought it was good of her to let us have a little bit of crap, but also understand how to manage the crap intake.

I was a bit of a sniff head for a while but didn’t drink and all my mates must have been drinking 10+ litres plus of beer and some spirits. Easy a crate of Stella for each person.

We didn’t when I worked there. We put enough ice in to make it full. Ask for no ice and it’s like 90% full. We just pressed a button. If I was working I’d top up the no ice folk. I’d also let you keep your free coffee stamps after claiming your coffee for free.

Another fun comment, movie theaters used to have absolutely gigantic portions (yes, even bigger than now). Cobb Theaters had a soda called "The Cobbster" which was 80oz. It was basically a popcorn bucket full of soda with a straw. And it came with free refills, it was the only size to do so. I imagine that was because only a maniac would actually come back for a refill. I did it once to "get my value", but I couldn't actually drink any more.

When I worked at Taco Bell, I would make food like how I would want it and I would ice and fill drinks how I'd want it: just enough ice and filled to the brim with no overflow or mess. The trick is to tilt the cup and overfill it, so that the foam rolls out of the cup as you're filling it, then untip it as you top it off. The momentum of the overflow keeps the side clean if you do it right, kind the same energy as snapping off a paper towel or toilet paper from a roll one-handed.

I can do 1L over a period of time... in a plastic bottle. If US cups are like they are elsewhere they eventually get eaten away by the liquid and start dripping, which seems to go against the implied notion that you can just order a big one and take it with you to keep drinking elsewhere.

The largest size cups are often, but not always, thin as hell plastic.

Good to know. In fairness, I don't think you can get that much Coke in anything but plastic. They don't do 1L cans and there are thick plastic bottles starting at 500ml, so thin plastic may actually be better.
I do think there's a 1L glass bottle, but it's more of a special edition thing. I don't think it's easy to find in supermarkets and I havent' seen it anywhere else. And for any soft drink other than specifically Coca Cola it's mostly just plastic for anything above 500 mil.

This would be regional. Some of the new "mixology" machines offer sparkling water options. Most American machines offer carbonated soda water (tap water with carbonation added, no flavors or minerals really added)

I stayed in Paris+Marseille for 3.5 weeks and found the portion sizes the same overall as what we get in California, only slightly less than southern AZ. These crazy portions are really only a thing at fast/low quality restaurants around here.
