Perhaps I'm in a minority but when the PS3 and 360 first debuted I did not consider even the NES to be "retro". I would have applied that term to the likes of an Atari 2600 or colecovision.
The NES and Atari are separated by mere 6 years. The NES and Xbox 360 are separated by nearly 22 years. That's how much the perception of graphical advancement has decelerated. Sure we keep making leaps on graphical fidelity, but ever more in areas that are less and less noticeable every time.
I'm trying to finally finish trials of the sword on master mode... which is only going to be possible due to hacking my switch, backing up my save, transferring it to PC, and finally converting it to a Wii U save to run in Cemu. Glorious ultrawide at 144fps - I only wish I had left myself more of the game to play on a worthy system
I've heard the reason for the name of XBox 360's successor was that some marketing geniuses heard that most people called it "the three-sixty" for short, and thought "Great! Let's call this the XBox One, and it will be referred to as The One! Like Neo!!"
And then, everyone collectively agreed on "XBone" 🦴
There's more time between the release of the 360 and (picking a random game that released this week) Pathologic 3, than there is between then and the release of Super Mario Bros on the NES
The 360 was released in 2005. That's over 20 years ago. Yes, they would be considered classics at this point. And know what, I wish more folks younger than myself discovered how gaming WAS and realize what it's turned into.
Keep in mind the launch model of the 360 didn't have an HDMI port, most people still had a CRT, and it didn't even come with component cables, there was only a composite lead in the box, you had to pay extra for component cables if you wanted them.
It was called 360 because they didn't want to release an Xbox 2 when PS already had 3. So they came up with 360 bullshit because it's kind of like 3. So now PS are conveniently numbered and I have no idea which Xbox is the newest.
Well, it's over 20 years old now, so probably. It's also really easy to softmod recently. Last year I got one for $25 at a thrift shop and modded it, so it's also a great time to get one.
So far, I only played Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie on it though, and messed around a bit with the first release of Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition.
Yep, that's still true. However, you can install ABadAvatar onto a USB stick which will run the exploit automatically upon startup. It usually takes about a minute for the exploit to successfully start and occasionally crashes (only happened to me once).
as an early 90s-born millennial near the upper limit of gen z, it's been great seeing them discover mid 20s aging as I enter my early 30s :) it doesn't stop Gen Z. You keep on aging from here on out. I remember thinking the 70s were only 30 years ago, and the 80s only 20.
Though on the flip side, remember that however old you are right now, it's also the youngest you'll ever be going forward.
Feeling old in your 20s? Many people are active into their 60s, some keep going strong into their 90s.
Unless you're recovering from illness or injury, the current version of your body might be the best version you'll ever see again.
Though one suggestion that left my own body far more capable, if you're the skinny and weak type, do some proper workouts. Proper as in spend the time to learn proper form and also ensure you're getting enough energy and protein in your diet. You'll gain strength that will stay with you until you do get really old (assuming your body doesn't atrophy due to starvation or being bedridden before then).
Eg, when I first started working out, I couldn't curl 20 lbs, had to go down to 15. But I was curling 20 a week or two later and was pushing 40 lbs about a year or two later, then my workout habit dropped off and 8 years have passed and I can still curl over 30 lbs when I get curious in the dumbbell section of stores that carry them.
it feels like there are 2 kinds of people: those who feel old at 23, and those who don't stop feeling like a child until every hair on their head and face is gray.
I'd fall into the latter category because i'm 26 and i don't feel quite adult yet, despite the front of my chin being gray already.
Wtf is a Halo 3? Atari just announced a new game based on that sick alien movie Spielberg just put out that's super popular right now. I bet it's gonna be the best game ever!
In my opinion, no. For me it's not about time, 360 for the most part plays just like any other present day console. Only difference is that development and marketing budgets went out of control (a trend that was already underway during later seventh generation), and the relentless stream of CoD, Halo and GTA clones stopped (THANK GOODNESS FOR THAT).
I can still remember I think some new grounds stick figure type animated comic, made back when it was Macromedia Flash, not Adobe Flash, and it was mocking the idea of 20 years in the future we would have Call of Duty 16.
... I think if you actually count them numerically we are now beyond 20.
I mean, open world games are commonplace. It's like saying "doomclones" stopped. Yeah, they became fpses.
but on the other hand "realistic crime open world games" kinda gta knockoffs were more commonplace back then.
Unfortunately, somehow, gta feels like a gta knockoff. I didn't even finish V, and the satire just seemed less biting, and late to the punch. Like the jokes it was making had already been made elsewhere, so it felt stale and done before.
Nobody calls Minecraft or The Outer Wilds a GTA-like. Even if you want to stick "3D RPG" on there, nobody considers Morrowind or New Vegas to be a GTA-like.
On the other hand I would consider games like Cyberpunk: 2077 and Red Faction: Guerilla to be GTA-likes, as they both fall squarely in the GTA/Far Cry/Assassin's Creed triangle. This has to do not just with the shape of the map, but the systems within it, the design ethos / expected player actions, and the way the narrative is structured and presented.
It’s like saying “doomclones” stopped. Yeah, they became fpses.
In my opinion mentioning "doom clones" is a thought terminating cliche. I have never seen it improve the quality of a discussion because it shuts down conversations about the similarities and differences between games and how much the various qualities contribute to creating a distinctive experience.
If the only thing a game had in common with DOOM was the structure of its levels then I wouldn't even consider it comparable (at least for general description). If it had the same core gameplay mechanics and feel as doom but added some of its own ideas I might call it a doom-like. If a game just poorly imitated all of DOOM's mechanics without bringing anything new to the table, then yeah, I would probably consider that to be a shitty knockoff.
These two cases aren't the same though. Doom built a whole new genre by building on Wolf 3D's foundation, it just didn't have a name at the time. Very few 90s fps games actually play like Doom, or even try to. They all got their own thing going.
GTA clones definitely wanted to be like GTA, I can tell by just looking at them. I didn't play any GTA inspired games besides Retro City Rampage so I don't know which titles in particular deserve to be seen as knockoffs but they were out there.
I think what killed the traditional console are the hardware progression and the decline of physical games. In 90s consoles had very different specs that gave them specialty. When you bought one it deteremined what kind of game library you would have access to, not just a few exclusives. And playing them was super convenient, you popped in your cartridge or disk and you were good to go.
Neither of those things exist today. While the console form factor still has value, there is no justification for the closed ecosystems around them in my opinion.
Amazing console that can be easily softmodded nowadays. mine has a 1tb hdd attached, with over 200 games (incl. ~1/3 from xbox classic). I've been using it more than the PS4 or Steam, until I modded my PS4 too recently
On the other hand, most of the games I've gotten for my PS5 are PS4 games, though tbf they are mostly from the used game bargain bin at EB Games, so I guess it says more about the cheap ps4 library vs ps5.
Halo 3, Portal, and Super Mario Galaxy released closer to the launch of the Sega Genesis, the original Gameboy, and the fall of the Berlin Wall than today.
Same! I love the form factor of it and it still hasn't given out yet. Only thing that made me even think about wanting to replace it was the haptic/adaptive triggers on the PS5 controller. Don't like the form factor but man those triggers are nice.
That's unfortunate. Too bad Sony has patented the haptics/adaptive triggers. It's such a good feature, I would kill for an Xbox style form factor controller with triggers like that.
Depending on how pedantic you want to be, that is for the United States release. The Famicom was released summer 1983 in Japan and the NES is generally considered the localized version for North America.
Yeah, once we hit 20 years since the 360's launch, we had 20 year old games that still look pretty decent by today's standards. I don't think you could say that at any point in time before then.
I feel old consider the new resurgence in people wanting a PS2. you can't find them anywhere anymore. all the retro game stores are selling out of them. Even the PSP is hard to come by.
I remember waiting in line at the midnight launch of the PS2. I also remember waiting in line at the midnight launch of the first Xbox and having to convince my friend to also pick up Halo because I heard good things about it. He just wanted to get Cel Damage and Fusion Frenzy.
It's wild living through the time that these systems are brand new and pricey, then become practically worthless, and then become scarce and unaffordable forever.
I remember my mom getting me Halo 2 two months after the release date and how excited I was because I knew how hard it was to get. That was 2004. Halo 2 is drinking age now.
I remember getting a Wii after release but during one of the console drops. We were second in a line of about 10. I think they had like 4 available.
My current annoyance: my Xbox 360 works just fine, but none of the controllers turn on while battery powered. (IR remote works, but it's not exactly suitable for gaming.) And Xbox 360 was the pinnacle of Microsoft's "well we have to do slightly incompatible shit just for the hell of it" attitude - you can't just use a standard USB cable, it uses USB over a weird proprietary connector. (On the other hand, I've looooooved Xbox One and later controllers on PC, they have standard plugs)
My Halloween tradition is Bullet Witch - had to jank up the PC version to working state last year when I first noticed this problem with the 360 controllers.
Edit: Oh wow, I managed to find a 360 controller battery holder that actually works. Geometry Wars Evolved 2 status: got the first cheevo
You can also find replacement batteries online, though hard to say how easy the replacement will be. Wasn't bad for ps3 or wii u controllers, but no idea how ms approached it.
The official Xbox 360 rechargeable batteries were absolute hogwash. Terrible battery life when they were new, and it just kept getting even worse really fast.
I could imagine the third party batteries being better. I've only ever had one set of Xbox One/Series controller rechargeable batteries (third party but AFAIK officially licensed) and they're working just fine.
Battery tech has improved a lot since they came out and (at least for the other two systems mentioned, plus any other device I've replaced the battery for) you can often find batteries with better specs than the original for longer lasting (before recharge is required, can't say yet about total lifetime).
It's also not a bad idea to check if your batteries have become danger pillows, though the controller ones tend to be housed in hard plastic that makes it less obvious, but my wii u battery did feel like it had a bit of a bulge to it, leading to a nervous period where I had gotten rid of the old battery but was still waiting for the new one to be shipped lol.
I think it became retro when the 9th gen consoles started coming out.
To me, current gen is current, previous 2 generations are not retro, and anything older is. Many 360 models still had analog video out (as did the PS3 and Wii), so arguably it's the final generation built with CRTs in mind.
May I enquire if you are completely informed on the topic?
Have you ever played Portal beyond the first rooms? You definitely need fast and precise aiming in Portal.
Have you played Portal on controller? I've played through the game twice on controller on Xbox 360 and with mouse and keyboard on PC.
Both are very much playable. You don't need goddamn motherfucking MLG 100% 360° 720° noscope quickscope blaze it mtn dew it skillz only attainable through rarest of gamer mice and finest of mechanical keyboards. It's perfectly serviceable on controller. That was my point.
But seriously, I have started considering this console as retro. Going back to 2006 and beyond is when I started looking at N64 as retro and GC/PS2/Xbox as 'the old'. Now PS4/XBO is 'the old' and well... yeah.. its been 20 years.
I think just the fact that we're playing some of the same games as we did on 360/PS4 is whats keeping it alive for longer and out of the retro light.
SNES and GBA was peak and most evergreen due to the games being peak pixel art before everything went 3D. Nearly every SNES and GBA game is still beautiful. I tried playing some N64 games, and they are so ugly that they are nigh unplayable. Xbox is just a platform to play modern PC games that isn't quite as good as PC. Even Playstation 1 and 2 games are too dated to enjoy beyond one or two fighting games.
This is where it started for me. Skyrim, F:NV, GTA 4, Midnight Club: LA, Project Gotham, Halo 3, and not to mention the countless classic re-releases on XBLA. To think I would actually get into verbal arguments with my classmates over the 360 v.s PS3 console war.
I pulled my XB360 out this week. Like many people living in the south, we were iced in for the last 4-5 days. As a way to entertain my toddler I pulled out the 360 and Kinect to play fruit ninja. He loved playing it and even beat my high score from the last time I played it back in 2015
To be fair, and for all their other woes, Microsoft's work on back compat with Xbox One / Series is a pretty incredible feat of engineering.
Too bad licensing means they've essentially run out of games to port.
Has game carts and SD card and internal storage are just different kinds of cartridges. 100% retro. Gamecube is the only modern console Nintendo ever put out.
Did x360 even have any exclusives? I think most games released for it came out on PC too, so you'll have a way better experience playing them on PC even if it's a cheap 10yr old PC...

The NES and Atari are separated by mere 6 years. The NES and Xbox 360 are separated by nearly 22 years. That's how much the perception of graphical advancement has decelerated. Sure we keep making leaps on graphical fidelity, but ever more in areas that are less and less noticeable every time.

And then, everyone collectively agreed on "XBone" 🦴

Wake up, gen z boys and girls. You are not kids anymore. You are old af.
dreadbeef@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 5 pts · 195d
as an early 90s-born millennial near the upper limit of gen z, it's been great seeing them discover mid 20s aging as I enter my early 30s :) it doesn't stop Gen Z. You keep on aging from here on out. I remember thinking the 70s were only 30 years ago, and the 80s only 20.
Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 195d
But I was curling 20 a week or two later and was pushing 40 lbs about a year or two later, then my workout habit dropped off and 8 years have passed and I can still curl over 30 lbs when I get curious in the dumbbell section of stores that carry them.
dreadbeef@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 195d

Only difference is that development and marketing budgets went out of control (a trend that was already underway during later seventh generation), and the relentless stream of CoD, Halo and GTA clones stopped (THANK GOODNESS FOR THAT).

Like the jokes it was making had already been made elsewhere, so it felt stale and done before.
drosophila@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 195d
Nobody calls Minecraft or The Outer Wilds a GTA-like. Even if you want to stick "3D RPG" on there, nobody considers Morrowind or New Vegas to be a GTA-like.
On the other hand I would consider games like Cyberpunk: 2077 and Red Faction: Guerilla to be GTA-likes, as they both fall squarely in the GTA/Far Cry/Assassin's Creed triangle. This has to do not just with the shape of the map, but the systems within it, the design ethos / expected player actions, and the way the narrative is structured and presented.
UnspecificGravity@piefed.social · 1 pts · 195d

These two cases aren't the same though. Doom built a whole new genre by building on Wolf 3D's foundation, it just didn't have a name at the time. Very few 90s fps games actually play like Doom, or even try to. They all got their own thing going.
GTA clones definitely wanted to be like GTA, I can tell by just looking at them. I didn't play any GTA inspired games besides Retro City Rampage so I don't know which titles in particular deserve to be seen as knockoffs but they were out there.

When consoles got "accounts" and avatars, that was the death of them. Theyre just subscription dumb terminal spyware now.
weirdo_from_space@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 195d
I think what killed the traditional console are the hardware progression and the decline of physical games. In 90s consoles had very different specs that gave them specialty. When you bought one it deteremined what kind of game library you would have access to, not just a few exclusives. And playing them was super convenient, you popped in your cartridge or disk and you were good to go.
Neither of those things exist today. While the console form factor still has value, there is no justification for the closed ecosystems around them in my opinion.

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 195d

I was watching my roommate try to play portal the other day. He’s touchscreen generation. Never used a controller before.
It was a horrible thing to watch. Lots of “I can’t” shit you would get from a 6 year old.
prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 195d
To be fair, playing fps with controller has always been garbage.
muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 195d
That true, but the setup we are on can’t use a mouse. (Sunshine on Apple TV.)
umbraroze@slrpnk.net · 2 pts · 195d
To be fair to be fair, Portal on Xbox controller is entirely serviceable. You don't need super fast precision control in Portal anyway.
Honytawk@feddit.nl · 1 pts · 195d
The fuck you on about? Have you ever played Portal beyond the first rooms? You definitely need fast and precise aiming in Portal.
umbraroze@slrpnk.net · 2 pts · 194d
May I enquire if you are completely informed on the topic?
Have you played Portal on controller? I've played through the game twice on controller on Xbox 360 and with mouse and keyboard on PC.
Both are very much playable. You don't need goddamn motherfucking MLG 100% 360° 720° noscope quickscope blaze it mtn dew it skillz only attainable through rarest of gamer mice and finest of mechanical keyboards. It's perfectly serviceable on controller. That was my point.

Yes. Getting old is hard.
Just go with it and let the newer generations enjoy what you did.

I played GTA 5 on the 360. Retro my ass.
But seriously, I have started considering this console as retro. Going back to 2006 and beyond is when I started looking at N64 as retro and GC/PS2/Xbox as 'the old'. Now PS4/XBO is 'the old' and well... yeah.. its been 20 years.
I think just the fact that we're playing some of the same games as we did on 360/PS4 is whats keeping it alive for longer and out of the retro light.
bigboismith@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 195d
GTA V is as old today as quake 3 arena was when battlefield 4 was released.

I'm with ya. N64/PSX is difficult. Don't get me started on Saturn.

If the 360 generation is retro than what is the playstation 2 generation or Windows 95/98 and Ps1 generation? Let alone the Super Nintendo generation.

Retro but older.

Brosplosion@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 194d
It's been longer from now back to the Xbox 360 release as there was from the Xbox 360 release to the NES. Not even the SNES.

To be fair, and for all their other woes, Microsoft's work on back compat with Xbox One / Series is a pretty incredible feat of engineering.
Too bad licensing means they've essentially run out of games to port.

I'm considering a console as retro if they run on cartridges. All Xboxes are modern consoles.

Has game carts and SD card and internal storage are just different kinds of cartridges. 100% retro. Gamecube is the only modern console Nintendo ever put out.

It isn't retro because it's beefy enough to not be emulated easily. And yes, by that definition, the Wii is retro.

And the switch
samus12345@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 196d
The Switch is overall beefier and is emulated very well. Emulation is about the architecture and level of interest, not just specs.
UnspecificGravity@piefed.social · 1 pts · 195d
That says more about the current state of technology than anything else.
It also depends on your definition of "easily". You can play pretty much anything from the xbox catalog on a cheap business laptop today.
angstylittlecatboy@reddthat.com · 1 pts · 196d
Xbox 360 is easier to emulate than OG Xbox or Sega Saturn last I checked.
Venator@lemmy.nz · 1 pts · 195d
Did x360 even have any exclusives? I think most games released for it came out on PC too, so you'll have a way better experience playing them on PC even if it's a cheap 10yr old PC...
