This is my third time to the office. Im waiting for the Doctor to come in and whie waiting in the examination room, I spot this. I start flipping through it, and I am getting upset.
I wait for the doctor to come in. I immeditely ask him, hey what it this? why is it here? He blew me off and just said "oh its just an opinion piece" and I said, yeah, but who put it here, do you believe in this? And he just shrugged. I said, Im leaving, that is so wierd, thats weird to have in a doctors office. And I left. Ill never go back to that place.
I need a doctor who believes in science. You wanna be christain thats fine, but this literally says, for christain nationalism. gross.
Putnam CT, USA if anyone is curious. I want to post the photo in google maps reviews, but I am afraid to, even with my google account being a burner. Yes, it's the red pocket of an overall blue state, but, I just, was not expecting to see this.

If he denounced it, or explained something..maybe.. but, he blew off my concern and shrugged. No. Plenty of other doctors around, I was driving pretty far anyway.

Yeah, because despite it all, I am still open to and sympathetic to folks who genuinely have just been duped somehow. Dude did you not check their ratings before you went? 3.1 is a major red flag.
Another hint is look for "LGBTQ+ Friendly" in the listing. That's the easiest way to determine whether or not a doctor believes in science.
Madzielle@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 59 pts · 133d
So, most of the reviews are for the only brown lady in the place. She was lovely with me, this is a racist area, so...I ignored them. I did notice she had a cross on her neck, but thought not much of it. Until today, I saw some dude, O'neil. Idk who's room it was, but either way..
learned my lesson, both you and my husband are right lol
Psythik@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 132d
Ooh that's a good point; I didn't factor in that the general bigotry of the local community would play a factor in ratings... Not really an issue when you live in the city.
But yeah the "LGBTQ+ Friendly" label is very helpful for finding businesses that are progressive and treat people like human beings.
Sucks that you're stuck in an area full of bigots...try to leave when it becomes affordable/convenient.

or gender neutral bathrooms.
Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 132d
Is it strange that in my point of view as an European, it's weird as fuck that a doctor (or anything) has an "LGBTQ+ Friendly" tag?
That literally should not be a thing - every single doctor out there shouldn't at all care about their patient's sexual orientation and if they do care, leave it at home and act like fucking professionals at work.
I mean, I can see some specialities having doctors signal that they're experience with things related to gender transition, but beyond that, doctors as medical professionals have a professional duty to treat everybody the same independently of sexual orientation (and race, gender, religious beliefs, nationality and so on).
Further, doctors practicing Descrimination on their patients should be struck down as medical practicioners.
Isn't there something like a Medical Order in the US? What kind of fucked up medical training system you have over there?
Waraugh@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 6 pts · 132d
I have always interpreted that kind of tag as basically stating “we’re not bigots and we don’t send profits to bigoted political candidates in the community” more so than anything related to the business or practice specifically.
prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 6 pts · 132d
I've seen it mentioned for behavioral health places, and it makes sense to me in that case. If you're going to be seeing a psychiatrist, or going into rehab, you're probably gonna want to be sure that they're not bigots

I can understand it if you want a therapist who is familiar with helping you through gender dysphoria. That experience in navigating those complex emotions would be useful.
Otherwise, I hate how in this shithole of a country doctors put their own religion and prejudices before their patients and the patients well being.

No shit.
Christianity, Judaism, and Islam all worship the same God, and often respect each other's important figures as at least prophets.
If one of the three ever "won" and replaced the other two, the very next act would be going after a minor branch of their own religion.
The details they squabble over are already super minor, and basically come down to speaking different languages.
It doesn't have anything to do with religion, it's the power structure and people abusing others faith to convince them to do horrible shit.
voidsignal@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 133d
It has everything to do with religion. without these made up stories, not a single justification would be left for all the shit these people have done over the years. zero.
givesomefucks@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 133d
If it wasn't religion, they'd exploit something else.
You still think the people in charge of these movements actually give a fuck about the movement.
They're just looking for a way to manipulate people. Religion might be the most common right now, but there's other options that work just as well.
Do you not know what racism is?
The justification doesn't matter because it's always bullshit. Getting rid of the justification doesn't solve the problem, it just replaced it with a different justification.
What you're advocating for is perpetual whack a mole that doesn't solve anything.
voidsignal@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 133d
It's gonna be harder to exploit something that is not based on "trust me bro". Exploit what? Science? Fine. Reason? Ok.
Religion is THE tool for exploitation. You can lie to yourself, and that's what you've been trained for (Yes, I assume you are at least somewhat religious. Only religious people defend religion).
I do. And its origins are deeply rooted in religion. Lots of litterature about that.
So I'm not saying it's a magical bullet. But if we stop teaching people shit like "faith", we may have fucking chance of making it. Religions are not defendable anymore, it's a cancer, and it must be abolished.
I do not respect religion.
jaycifer@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 132d

Just so you're aware, most of the Nazi ideology is based in a form of science and reason, yet it spread hate like nothing else. Eugenics is a way to use science to to fuel hate towards people for whatever characteristics you choose. Science is not immune to this abuse. Sure, it's not as common as religion, but it's something we will always have to look out for. Don't think you're immune because you don't follow a religion. That's how you end up believing this other shit that tells you you're better than others.
voidsignal@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 132d
eugenics is not science. it's trash. pretending you do science to impose religious thinking on people is not science. It's religion however you call it.

I have several severe mental illnesses. So of course I'm in therapy. My therapist sends me up to psychiatric help who tells me my cannabis use is ok, but only as long as it is actually helping mental health. My therapist did not like that. She gave me literal DARE propaganda to review. My wife was luckily with me when this happened. The printout was dated back to 2002. I told her that all the information in that packet (several pages) was outdated, factually incorrect, and literally propaganda for the war on drugs. We never went back to her. I spent time without a therapist until I found one that is actually helping me and doesn't judge me based on one of several medications for my mental health.

I was at a walk in clinic and perusing their pamphlets when I noticed some that were in a different style than the rest. They were by Focus on the Family and included anti-abortion and anti-LGBT propaganda. I scoffed, collected them all out of the wall holder thing, and threw them in the trash -- the receptionist gave me a weird look.
A few minutes later she comes out and pulls them out of the trash can. She skims a few, frowns, and takes them to the back. I never saw those pamphlets in that waitingroom again.

Alternatively, you keep this doctor, steal the fascist propaganda and leave anarchist propaganda instead.

problem here is your doctor is someone who is fine with that being in the waiting room. Why do you need birth control. Your married. Why do you need birth control. Your not married.

Doesn't mean its theirs. God bothers often leave their trash laying around hoping someone will read it.

I asked, and it is a thick almost book like, $7 mag, found in the examination room, not the waiting room, not a pamphlet. It was along side another less obvious christain mag.
When asked, the Doctor did not deny it belonging to the office.
edit to add, I was in the "car visit" room. I think a less used room, as it was full of personal items like photographs and art.

Okay it was what I thought of first. The local library picks up a couple of way out there magazines on the shelf regularly. Several religious magazines and one is some pro china rag that makes china seem like a glowing beacon of decency. Someone is bringing them in and putting them on the shelf. The library throws them away every month.

He didn't deny it though.

When I briefly had Obamacare, I went to the only dr that accepted it in my area. Was a straight fever dream. There was a massive koi pond built into the floor of the place with little bridges crossing it connecting the offices. There was a room where the owner had a massive model ship collection. And All over the walls were signs saying how evolution is a lie. I never returned and canceled my Obamacare. It was so fucking weird.

I feel like the crazy people in blue states are extra. In a similar area and I had an optometrist try to sell me a bunch of miracle cures for autism. He was so predatory.

On an unrelated note, I'm reading The World Beyond Your Head by Matthew B Crawford, so it's cool to see his name in "the wild".
Update: I did NOT know that he was a Christian nationalist. The World Beyond Your Head was recommended to me probably a decade ago by a philosophy professor who is definitely neither Christian or nationalist.

The link to his article is somewhere in the post.
He somehow manages to argue being a humanitarian is a bad thing.
grow up.

I didn't realize that he was a Christian nationalist. The mean comment is kind of uncalled for. Reading something written by someone who might be a bad person doesn't really mean that I have to "grow up".
