Trump voter: Somebody asked him ‘To what extent are Americans' financial situations motivating you to make a deal?' Trump didn't care. I was angry. I voted for you, and you don't care about me?

I've said it for years, you vote for Trump for one of three reasons (usually multiple of the three listed but at the very least one).
you are a brainwashed cultist.
you are a bigot.
you are greedy.
I haven't seen a single Trump voter that doesn't fulfill at least one of these requirements, and I still feel nothing for them. If I could transpose all the suffering they've caused to others onto them, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
tomiant@piefed.social · 15 pts · 65d
I read a comment from a dude deep in MAGA territoryand he said the rest of us simply don't know how isolated they are news wise, everybody thinks the same and FOX et al play on TV and radio 24/7 in restaruants, bars, at work, at home, like they are surrounded by literally nothing but hard core propaganda.
I don't live there, but I'm willing to believe that at face value. Shit, USA/CIA has known how effective political propaganda is since they cut their teeth in Central and South America (they did it in lots of other places too).
The sophistication of the modern propaganda apparatus would make Goebbels blush.

hollowspur@lemmy.ml · 4 pts · 65d
tomkatt@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 65d
The person I responded to said they want these people broken. Jobs lost, farms confiscated, essentially homeless and ruined.
77 million people voted for Trump. Roughly a third of voting age individuals. What exactly are you suggesting? Do we jail them all? Where do we put them in that case? Or should they just be executed? Concentration camps? Slave labor?
What do you suggest we do with a third of the country who have no jobs, no prospects, utterly broken, and with nothing to lose?
I don’t like these folks, but I don’t think you or the previous person I replied to are thinking through the actual ramifications here. Economically this would ruin the country even in a good economy (which this is decidedly not). This would lead to civil war as the best case scenario, and any other scenario would be either insane levels of human rights violations or downright genocide.
And on top of all that, it wouldn’t actually solve any of the issues our country is facing in the near term. It would do nothing about the ringleaders, the manipulation, the corruption. Punishing idiots and assholes is vengeance of a kind, but it’s not a solution and won’t fix anything.
MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 64d

If there were some group that wasn't the very group that's hurting them to buy up their lands and resources. Then you might have a point. Then it would be extremely fitting for them to have to work on what used to be their lands that they lost through mismanagement. But that's not what would happen. Wealthy oligarchs will buy at the land for pennies on the dollar put them out of work and not create a job in its place. We will all suffer collectively just so one very uninformed dumb person suffers as well. That's a very conservative mindset

But one thing you can't argue, is that the signs weren't there. That those folks had no way of knowing that Trump was a grifting, lying, narcissistic, rapist idiot criminal. All these dumb fucks on tv acting surprised, not doing themselves any favors right now. That is not a fact. They're not stupid, as evidenced by a willingness to consider new evidence and change their opinion.
They were lied to, just like you were when Joe Biden made extravagant promises and then prioritized a genocide over helping your family eat.
It also doesn't help your case that, until COVID, cost of living was significantly less expensive in the US during Donald's first term. COL was never, ever anything but spiraling out of control under Joe Biden, and Harris (evidently a stupid motherfucker) publicly confirmed she wouldn't have done anything differently.
These people had a reason to think the economy would be better under Donald because they actually experienced it. Even with the grift and Donald being such a slimy son of a bitch.

USian here, and it's as sad as it is scary. So many people like this lead a lazy passive existence where they put so little thought into their lives that they can be led to vote for Trump for over a decade and only today be surprised like this. And those are the "good" ones who are merely ignorant and self-centered, that aren't just proud to be nazis.
Here on Lemmy we talk about problems like controlled opposition and implicit support of genocide on the other side of the world. But compared with the median american voter we are like those geologists in the meme about how experts in a field wildly over estimate the general public's knowledge of their field. And I am NOT saying we Lemmings are policy experts -- I'm saying the average schmuck is that far behind our internet "discourse" bullshit.
Azal@pawb.social · 7 pts · 64d
I don't disagree with you on them not having a grain of empathy, but seceding like this... won't happen. This is more often than not a urban/rural divide, so my state which votes like this has two major metros that vote against this sort of thing, as well as a smaller college town. Flipside the neighboring state of Illinois is known for being blue and voted against Trump and his policies because Chicago has more control over the state while the farmlands are red.
California has a major right wing movement in entire segments of its state that is trying to secede from the state.
If we go into a civil war again, it won't be like last time with a north vs south, it's going to be a nationwide clusterfuck. Washington, Oregon, California is the closest to being able to pull off a splitting off from the country and it being a line.

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 7 pts · 64d
And we learned the hard, 150 year lesson that you can't heal the country with active Traitors in the neighborhood. They will only poison the system, and keep it from being successful.
The French did it right, and made some strong examples of people, and taught the wealthy and powerful that they serve at the pleasure of the CITIZENS. The problem with the current crop of Sociopathic Oligarchs is that they don't believe that we'll ever break loose, and they also believe that if we did, their bunkers would protect them.
We are strongly socialized to obey the law, and behave within societal norms, but the wealthy are beating on that with a sledgehammer, and eventually it will collapse. When the Dam of Society finally breaks, it will break terrible, just like during the French Revolution, and not only will the Oligarchs lose, so will their entire bloodlines.
They would be very wise to negotiate a settlement before it gets that far. They will lose a LOT of their fortunes, but they will still have more than enough to live opulently, just not enough to be an existential threat to the entire planet.
MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 64d
Stupid fucking ahistorical nonsense. The French had a bloodbath that resulted in a dictatorship and then a return of the monarchy. That's "doing it right" only if you're a dumbasss.
BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 64d
And yet a lot of entitled, untouchable, wealthy sosiopaths still lost their heads, and it has stood as a very real warning to rich shitheads ever since.
parricc@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 63d
It's not half of the country, it's half of the people that voted, and there is heavy voter suppression to keep people from voting. But the problem is deeper than the people. The same number of idiots and the same number of selfish people are in every country. That is something people seriously need to understand. It doesn't matter what country you're in, these same kinds of assholes are next to you whether you're aware of them or not.
So you might wonder why not every country has an administration as vile as Trump. The reason is systemic. Elections need to work in a way that doesn't give an advantage to certain candidates. No corporate or shady political donations. No bribes. No gerrymandering. No conflicts of interest. Stuff like ranked choice voting would help as well. Also automatic voter registration with universal mail in voting. Nobody should have to make a registration appointment 5 months before an election just to get the right to vote in it. And yes, I've had friends that had to book their appointments that far in advance. And no waiting in line for 4 hours to vote. And yes, I've had to stand in line for that long outside in 35+C heat to vote. There must be enforced laws to protect the integrity of elections and to keep rich and powerful assholes from controlling their outcome. When politicians do corrupt things, there needs to be consequences. Trump should have been in prison long before the election. And as the US currently exists, only rich and powerful people that accept money from billionaires can get elected. A government should be made up of the people, not of the billionaires. When politicians are billionaires, they don't represent us. At the same time, the media needs to be independent and free from the influence of billionaires as well. No single company should own most of the television and radio stations, TV channels, and streaming networks in a country. And nothing should be able to broadcast straight up propaganda with political motives and present it as news. And there needs to be a wealth tax to keep people from even becoming billionaires because wealth buys power and influence. If the goal is to keep the wealthy from having more influence than the working class, then there needs to be a cap on how wealthy someone can be. When these safeguards are removed, there is no country on the planet that won't eventually end up in the exact same situation as the US is in right now.

This is true from an emotional perspective, but neither you nor this person understands how our political system works. I mean I don't fully understand it I'm sure, but I do know one thing.
It does not matter who we vote for in the presidential election. We have an electoral college, which has overturned the popular vote on multiple different occasions. The electoral college was instituted when black men earned the right to vote, as a measure to disenfranchise them. By all means vote for someone other than Trump, but that vote doesn't have to be respected.

That legacy and heritage can be a source of enormous pride for some people. Losing it is absolutely world-shattering in a way that very few people understand.
When that loss happens due to things that aren't your fault, it's one thing. But when it's due to something that is your fault, that guilt is so utterly crushing that the shame drives people to unimaginable depths of living hell.
Some people have relatives buried on their farmland. Some people have had babies born in the farmhouse. Most have their family weddings on the farm. Grandkids grow up living and working on their grandparents land. The ones that kill themselves over losing the family farm due to Trump's policies did it because they realize they got suckered by a con man into believing a line, and it cost them their family's entire foundation and past.
Point given to those who point out that colonization stripped the same thing from its rightful original owners. You're absolutely right. It's still the loss of a generational home. That pain is very real.

Everyone on the opposite side of OP told him/her exactly this. He/she didn't care then, now he/she is suffer the coincidences of their actions like we have been since day one of his office. If they are now suffering bad enough to complain like a little baby girl that they has problems like the rest of us, he/she can end up living in dirt and I still wouldn't care because these problems are problems he and his maga Nazis side created.

How could they not know he didn’t care?
He essentially said so on numerous occasions, but I guess that went through the same “He means what he says but everything he says requires interpretation” mind machine.
But as usual:
They only care when it hurts themselves. They’re fine with hurting everyone else.

Exactly that's why im over this country. Like so what if the people finally realize "oh wow yeah trump really is a lying piece of shit who raped children"? They're still gonna turn around and vote for Vance instead when Vance says "unlike trump, I really care about your personal finances!'
Like we can expose trump all day and everyone vould actually agree with us for once, and it still wouldn't fix the problem of these extrump voters still really wanting a fascist dictator who will round up minorities but maybe he won't be so corrupt.
The biggest thing i hear from extrump voters is "i thought he was the real deal" like they're disappointed he never actually built the Wall, that he didn't nuke iran and finish the war swiftly, that he didnt get all the gay characters off of televison. Like that's what the mainstream american is, straight up. idc how progressive you and your friends are, there's more of them than us. It's not our country anymore.
4am@lemmy.zip · 6 pts · 65d
That ain’t true and you know it. This is basically psyop posting. Maybe they’re not all baby communists yet but 70% of the fucking country hates this clown.
SEVENTY percent.
Don’t ever let the slavers who made the voting system to exclude anyone but affluent slave owners tell you they outnumber you.
Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 62d
It's not the slavers, it's the guys at the gas station making minimum wage. They tell me they love trump but they're disappointed in gas prices. That's the average american.

Exactly. They still want a piece of shit to be president, they just want him to be a piece of shit to everyone they disagree with.

We need to embrace these people, despite their mistakes. They're misled by our media and by their upbringing. They mistrust society, education, etc., because of the very people they vote for. It's a feedback loop.
We need to allow the leopard faces to heal up so they can see and learn from their mistakes. If that's not possible, then fine, but everyone should be able to make amends or we are a poor society.

Donald ran on affordability.
It was no more stupid for people to vote for the affordability candidate (especially after four years of rampant COL increases under Joe Biden) than it was for people to vote for Biden on his unfounded promises to lower inflation and eliminate student loan debt. This person has every right to be angry.
Lots of people vote based on words and nothing else. Democrats are no different than this person, and if the roles were reversed, you'd be arguing that Harris was somehow magically powerless to help, because you'd be in exactly the same position. (Though the last two years of Donald's presidency have proven that power was never a problem.)
