I swear I read an article about this months ago... is it the same data center and they still didn't stop the gas turbines, or is this another one?

Either way: fuck Musk and fuck the government who laid the foundations for such atrocities.

This would be a great time for an injunction to force the data center to shut down all of those turbines until the matter has been resolved legally.

Of course you need to be able to pay for a lawyer who convinces a judge to pass that injunction.

ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world · 53 pts · 19d

There was an incident in South Korea some years ago where a greedy developer built an apartment building with substandard concrete; the building later collapsed and killed a few hundred people. The guy was tried and convicted and as he was being frog-marched to his sentencing hearing, friends and relatives of the victims were coming out of the crowd and beating him while his escorts just looked away.

It's really enjoyable to imagine that happening here in the US, but then it's enjoyable to imagine winning the lottery, too.

As Trump is learning with Iran, if you make enemies by the millions, you risk awakening a plumber.

in4apenny@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 0 pts · 18d

Seriously...

If we are to learn from history, and the successes of various resistance groups in Europe when occupied by the Nazis, we would learn that targetting the higher ups and figureheads don't work. What DOES work, is targeting the workers - the average people who facilitate the machine. When the architect of the holocaust was assassinated, it only sped things up and made it worse. So instead resistance groups started doing drive bys on average ol' Deborah's and Johns who was employed to operate the Nazi bureaucracy, do the paperwork, doing the monitoring, doing the deliveries, average folk who worked for them - as destabilizing the machinery is far more effective than targeting figureheads. As leftists know so well - it's the workers that do all the work.

So rather than shooting Musk, it will genuinely be more effective to shoot at Tesla/SpaceX/X employees until they stop showing up to work. Same goes for banks, private equity firms, hedge funds, healthcare insurance companies, etc. They don't even have security detail. There's a million other jobs they could be doing, real work like helping to rebuild, instead they choose to make these demons dreams come true in exchange for a financial bribe. As my atheist father would say about religion - "I fear not the cult leader, but the millions who follow them." Workers and employees of these companies are just as fair, and empirically more effective targets than the billionaire CEOs.

...In a videogame, of course. I would never incite self-defence violence.

If Tucker Carlson or whoever manages to create a different far right party that steals more than 5% but less than 95% of the vote from the current far right party, that's bad for far right voters because the less right party will always come out ahead in major elections.

My city finally got a court order against a billionaire for unpermitted building that allows us to bulldoze his house. Just took 7 years in court to get the ruling...

And instead of bulldozing the house, we were able to use the court order to strongarm them into fixing their site so it no longer damages the environment, their neighbors, or city infrastructure.

The upside for the city there (aside from having to bid out and manage a major project in-house) is that we get a lot more tax revenue from a house that is brought into compliance than a scarred, demolished site.

At some point participation is complicity but unless we make it hostile to work with, for, or in the interests of these inhuman monsters, people won't know not to. Labour is not in a position to know what work is illegal or not.

Working for the wealthy needs to be seen as a threat against society. It's deeply anti-social. We have no way to differentiate them in their range of evil, and they made it impossible to find out. So at some point, to protect the working, poor and middle classes, if you're wealthy, you're a threat. Don't want to be treated as a threat? Give up your wealth and join the peasantry. We need to police our own to protect ourselves from the threat of wealth.

Not sure how deliberate the choice was, but exploiting and hurting marginalized communities seems to be a honed skill of the Musk family (not counting his kids who disowned him ofc, especially his daughter)

Edit: Yep, I was right. From Wikipedia:

Haldeman's move to South Africa was motivated by support for apartheid, and he was a supporter of the ruling National Party of South Africa. Errol Musk said of his wife's family: "They were very fanatical in favor of apartheid... [Maye's] parents came to South Africa from Canada because they sympathised with the Afrikaner government."[23]

I don't know how they are winning. I haven't given them any of my money.

Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org · 7 pts · 19d (3 replies)

They are winning if nobody makes them tear down such illegal constructions.

SeeMarkFly@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 19d (2 replies)

I guess it's easier to ask for forgiveness (pay a fine) than it is to get permission (acquire a permit).

Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org · 0 pts · 19d (1 reply)

Does the environment care about a fine?

SeeMarkFly@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 19d

Well, I know the fine doesn't care about the environment, if that helps.

Can someone do something about this racist Afrikaans piece of shit?

metermatic26@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 19d (3 replies)

JC, every other post on here is about data centers, Elon Musk or White House legislation. Can’t we talk about technology instead of US politics?

guy@piefed.social · 8 pts · 19d (1 reply)

Feel free 😄

What powers this technology? Surely the planning, engineering and building of these things with no use doesn't use technology?

roserose56@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 18d

Don't you want to know the every day drama slop? Do you want to silence the USA users that post slop drama ? Why don't you do something? Are you anti-american? Why the fuck you are ? We should deport you or something. Like look what Trump is doing! Post something! Let users know what Trump did for the 1000000time. Don't be anti-american, spam, spam slop, make them know! /j

are you sure?

Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com · -34 pts · 18d (13 replies)

Why does it matter if the community is inhabitated my residents of a dark skin color?

  1. Are Lemmy users really that fixated on skin color?
  2. Are we in that need for upvotes and non-existant karma
  3. Do you want to spark controversial discussions?

Why did you do felt the need to mention "black communities".
And don't tell me it's because you copy pasted the title of the source article or something.

oopsgodisdeadmybad@lemmy.zip · 9 pts · 18d (5 replies)

The entire point of that is exposing his prejudices. I don't know how you miss that kinda thing.

It has absolutely nothing to do with their Lemmy account, or the controversy.

Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com · -12 pts · 18d (4 replies)

Would it matter if it was near 100k white instead of 100k black residents?
No, 100k residents are actively being harmed.

oopsgodisdeadmybad@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 18d (3 replies)

So you can't read I guess.

Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com · -13 pts · 18d (2 replies)

Bruh.
Sure thing buddy. If that makes you feel better?

I see humans. Not black, white, yellow, rainbow colored humans.

Minorities are oppressed and fucked with. That is for sure. Needing to call it "black" in a headline instead of "minority" is cloaked racism in of itself.

Paulemeister@feddit.org · 8 pts · 18d

So you are ok with writing "... placed near oppressed community" but not specifying what group?

oopsgodisdeadmybad@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 18d

And that's great for you. But had nothing to do with what I said as the original answer.

So clean your digital ears out a bit, and maybe repetition (with free bonus expansion) will help.

The point was specifying Elon's particular flavor of oppression.

Had nothing to do with speaking Lemmy controversy, or hinting that one kind of racism was worse than another.

Hoping you get the point now.

awfulawful@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 7 pts · 18d

Beyond the angle already mentioned about Musk's racism, black communities in the US have disproportionately been affected by polluting industries. It is worth mentioning when it happens yet again.

Avicenna@programming.dev · 7 pts · 18d (1 reply)

I understand your point but it is a piece of relevant information when Elon is considered

"These pollutants are proven to have adverse effects on the health of the people living within a five-mile radius of the source, and census data showed that the residents living in the affected area are predominantly black. "

If you watch Errol Musk's interview about non white people in US, combine it with the knowledge of the type of similar asshole Elon is, it is not at all surprising that he knew the effects of such turbines and selected this location on purpose. It is not at all surprising that Elon would have an agenda where he tried to reduce non-white population because he thinks he is saving humanity by doing so. Ofcourse you can't put in the headine something like "Elon, being a racist asshole, placed turbines near black communities" that is too biased and too speculative for news reporting. You can only present facts that are associated to this and let the reader decide. It is still biased and leading but atleast you allow the reader to form their own opinion to a much greater extend.

Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 18d

I understand your point

First reasonable response

but it is a piece of relevant information when Elon is considered

Both position (mine and you (+ seemingly the whole thread)) can be true.

Thanks for explaining your position.

creamfresh@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 18d (1 reply)

It mattered to Musk that there are Black communities to fuck with, so why not mention that.

Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com · -11 pts · 18d

Sure. But that's not a headline thing that needs mentioning.

Instead it should be something like "In his racism fanaticism, Musk ordered XY gas turbines to be installed especially near residents (of a minority)".

Can that can't be proven to be actually cause of racism (it likely is).

But the other headline (currently being used) is also racial profiling.

Syrc@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 18d (1 reply)

And don’t tell me it’s because you copy pasted the title of the source article or something.

Well yeah, it’s usually good practice not to change the source article’s title.

Do I think the “black communities” part was necessary in the title? Not really. But if the author decided to frame it like that, and OP wanted to repost it as-is, I see no issue with that.

Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 18d

Balanced take. I can support that angle.
