By their own logic, they don't have a right to tariff refunds either.

They want to eat their cake, and have it to. Will capitalism benefit the capitalists like it does 99.99% of the time? You bet your sweet ass it will!
99.99% of the time, it works every time!

I'm reminded of how Disney pulled most of their movie ideas from the public domain, and then pushed hard to try to extend copyright so that none of their movies would ever enter the public domain themselves.

I mean, not quite the same logic. The tariffs that Nintendo paid were deemed illegal. The price consumers paid was not deemed to be illegal. At least, not yet, as the case is ongoing.

I'm sure their logic would also say "When we raised prices, fewer people bought our stuff, so we already paid the price." Or something skeezy like that.

I hate comments like this. Nintendo paid an illegal tax, so they deserve a refund. Consumers got screwed by their government, not Nintendo.
Also, if you think the tariffs, AI, threat of more tariffs, Iran war, etc. haven't increases the cost of operations for businesses then you're not paying attention to current events.

jacksilver@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 23d
I'm not defending anyone, just explaining how the law is working in this scenario as people seems to have lost the ability to understand simple taxes (tariffs).

My mother bought me an NES when I was a child, and shortly after Nintendo lowered the price and they voluntarily refunded her the difference.
She told me years later that secured her as a Nintendo customer for my games for life.
This greed is disgusting, but more than anything it's depressing.
TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · 34 pts · 24d
i think you mean the store she bought it from refunded you the difference.
many retail outlets have 30 day price guarantees, sometimes 90.
Nobody was buying NES systems direct from Nintendo.
A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 24d
back then they did, I doubt any have it now.
Hell, walmart wont even price match its own website... and like or hate walmart, thats the cheapest place in town to get shit so thats where most people, especially in this economy, will be shoppin.
Pika@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 24d
Not only that, walmart won't even do price adjustments anymore. they got rid of that about 3 or 4 years ago.
It used to be if you bought an item and the price fell within 14 days of purchase you could do a price adjustment on it. Now if you give the reason it's cheaper as a reason for the return, they will refuse to do the exchange full stop.
it's stupid because their return policy is still 90 days on most items, so you can just.... return the item as a change mind, and then go and buy a brand new unopened one off the shelf for the reduced price.... so not only are they out the money anyway but they also now have to sell or claims out a used product and are down a new unopened product ontop of it.
Amazon doesn't do it anymore either, they used to offer price adjustments on anything within 30 days of purchase as long as you contact customer support. Now they force you to return the item and buy it again.
TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 24d
it's not super common but a couple times a year i will buy something and the price drops a week or two later and you can contact them to get a gift card for the difference. you aren't going to get in in cash or credit in 2026 though. it's 30 days from date of purchase for all the places i have done this for.
A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 24d
giftcards arent refunds.
They are a marketing ploy to get you to come back and spend more money.
TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · -2 pts · 24d
Yep. I'm just an idiot. It's not like I'll go back to the store ever again and I'm a regular customer.
They are clearly ENTRAPPING ME. Just like all the times I returned a product and they gave me a full refund, that was also total entrapment. Or when I returned a product for a warrenty fufillment and they replaced it, also entrapment.

I was like, 5 when it happened, so I've never confirmed it, and my mother is definitely the kind of person who would misremember this kind of thing, but from what she claims she called them directly because they dropped the MSRP, not just a store price drop.
Take it with a grain of salt though.

Nintendo aren't a good company but they no doubt lost sales due to the higher tariffs and I don't really blame them.
My opinion the tariffs are the US's own fault they shouldn't have voted in a moron.
dmalteseknight@programming.dev · 14 pts · 24d
They also don't know what the current US adminstration will do next. As soon as the tarrifs were struck down Trump implemented new ones. And the thing is that he wasn't even given as much as a stern talking to for implementing these illegal world affecting tarrifs. In other nations these would have been career ending.

Nintendo had long since realized that their customers are kids who see Pokemon and Mario and scream at their parents until they buy it for them. They can charge whatever they want and those kids will still bug their parents until they get it.
Everyone else that buys their products is just a bonus if they still keep buying even after the prices get jacked up. Nintendo made their decision about who to prioritize, and the only boycott that would work to turn things around would have to be orchestrated by all the parents of all the 6 year olds in the world, and I doubt that'll happen.

KRAW@linux.community · 30 pts · 24d
IMO I think it's weird to focus specifically on Nintendo. The American government basically screwed over its populace and a ton of foreign companies (less sympathy for the former though). I don't think it's realistic to expect these companies to reimburse companies, because logistically it'd be a nightmare. The only way I can imagine consumers getting their money back is if the government used the tarrif money to pay a portion of the federal income tax for its citizens, ideally the lower tax vracket. Unfortunately that won't happen.
TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · -4 pts · 24d
lemmy seems to have a hard on for painting Nintendo particularly as this awful terrible corporation. Most likely because they are bitter they won't lower their game prices. And they turn it into this weird moral issue and compare them to Steam as if Steam is the 'good guy' and Nintendo is the 'bad guy'. it's basically virtue signalling over consumer choice or something, instead of political issues. because only bad stupid people would ever own a switch or something.
I mean, cool. I don't buy a lot of shit from a lot of companies because I also don't find their pricing and business model appealing. But it's not a moral issue in any way. There are far worse examples of course, too. Jeep makes objectively shitty cars for decades, but people keep buying them, and complaining about how they are shitty, for the lifestyle image/cool club they think owning a Jeep puts them in.
But you're 100% right and basically no company is giving customers refunds over any of this because it's already enough of a clusterfuck as it is to get their own refunds. But hey, let's not let complex and costly reality get in the way of idealistic consumer entitlement over like $20 bucks, which even if they could give people the refunds, it probably would among to very little money. Even more hilarious is that folks who never bought the product still seem to think they should get a refund from Nintendo because they had a Gamecube 20 years ago.

The best way to "stand up for yourself" when a company that sells a luxury product is to not buy said product. In which case this tariff nonsense doesn't affect you. More people were affect by the increase in the cost of groceries and gas than the cost of a Switch 2.

TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 24d
it also costs half as much as a steamdeck.
you're comparing a Civic to a BMW3 series and asking why the Civic doesn't have leather seats and a 5K audio system.
Railcar8095@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 24d
If you want to discuss prices, discuss them fully. The Deck is more expensive, but the games are cheaper. And the day I bought the Deck I already had a massive collection, with many more games added for free from epic, giveaways....
TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · -5 pts · 24d
Depends on when you buy the game. New retail games on steam deck are still 50-60 bucks.
I can also find massive discounts on digital games on switch. I just bought like a bunch of $5 or less games on the last eshop sale.
Does Zelda and Mario go on sale for $5? No. They go on sale for like $30-40. I also just bought Mario Odsyessy for $40.
I'm happy to pay these prices. Cool if you are not? Lots of people buy shit I would never spend my money on. I haven't bought a gaming PC in 15 years, because it me it seems like a huge waste of money and time.
Almost as if other people have different preferences, and priorities than you do? And they are happy to buy products you are not.

Pika@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 24d
I doubt the majority of the nintendo customers are going to care to be honest. The only people that really got screwed were people decided to jump on board and buy the switch 2 after they raised the prices by 40$ in response to the tariffs.
Not saying that I think those customers who did spend more on it shouldn't get a refund but, I do think that the majority of nintendo fans are either unaffected, or the amount wouldn't be worth chasing. I highly doubt this instance will be the deciding factor on many fans for a "yea fuck Nintendo I'm out" reaction. There are far worse things that Nintendo has done that I think would have caused it prior.

They've ALWAYS sucked but had a very friendly face. Remember how they tried to ban renting in North America? They failed to do so for games, but they got their filthy clutches on the manuals so game shops weren't allowed to rent those out. They didn't need to do that but they did just to make the experience a little bit worse for us consumers.
Having said that... The US kinda fucked up themselves, so I'm not sure why Nintendo is being singled out.
bamboo@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 24d
Nintendo is being singled out because they're withholding the tariff refunds for tariffs they never paid and passed on to the customers. When the tariffs were imposed, no one really blamed Nintendo and knew it was the Administration's fault. If Nintendo didn't want sales to drop because of higher prices, they could have eaten the additional tariff cost until it all got sorted out. Had they done this, then they'd be entitled to that tariff refund money. Instead they passed on the tariff cost to customers, which sucks for customers but was really the only sensible thing Nintendo could have done given the circumstances, and most people aren't really blaming Nintendo on that decision. But now Nintendo is trying to have it both ways, not pay any of the tariffs and keep all of the tariff refunds which is why they're being singled out. It's pure greed on their part with blatant disrespect to their customers.
k0e3@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 20d
Ok, but which other companies reimbursed the tarrif surcharges? Or did every other company eat the tarrif costs?
bamboo@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 20d
You're right, i reread the article and it mentions similar lawsuits against Sony / Microsoft, so they all suck. I think the reason Nintendo is being singled out here is because there is not a lot of news with those other lawsuits, but with this one, Nintendo is trying to dismiss the case saying plaintiffs:
With Nintendo's litigious history and them being the first to try to dismiss the case with this argument, they deserve the blowback they're getting from their own customers.
k0e3@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 20d
Yeah I think I see what you mean. Their North American customers are like the most loyal of their base and they can't even fucking throw them a bone. They're not required to, but fucking come on.
But at the same time... People should not have have bought non essentials from a company with a history of fucking over their base. What the hell were they expecting? Companies look after one thing: the stock holders. They don't give two shits about the customers as long as they can make them buy more shit.

TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 24d
what? I literally just bought it 3 weeks ago. That number is going to be high because I only have 4 games.
I will buy more games as time goes by and that cost will go down. That's how math works.
I also bought a PS5 four years ago, and only had a few games for it for the first few months.... that's how buying consoles/games works. Now I probably have like 50+ games for it, but it's been years.
