'I’ll never apologize' — Trump brushes off Iran war's impact on oil prices and calls aircraft carrier's 240+ days at sea 'not nearly long enough'

https://fortune.com/2026/08/15/trump-iran-war-oil-prices-abraham-lincoln-aircraft-carriers-record-time-sea/

Donald Trump on Friday downplayed the toll on American sailors enduring nearly nine months at sea on the USS Abraham Lincoln as concerns escalated about mental health and supply issues aboard the aircraft carrier supporting U.S. operations against Iran.

In a brief exchange with reporters before flying to New York for an event to highlight falling violent crime rates across the U.S., Trump refuted that family members have raised concerns about the deployment’s length and even said that the deployment — which includes a record-setting uninterrupted time at sea of more than 240 days — is “not nearly long enough.”

Every single one of them that voted for Trump or didn't vote, got what they deserve. They voted for the leopard eating faces, and now the leopard is on them.
The ones that voted against Trump are the only ones I can really feel sorry for.
Fuck Americans that failed to vote against Trump.

Trump is a malignant narcissist, and that was very clear before the election, it was also clear before he was elected the first time.
If you want a malignant narcissist as leader of your country, you are not right in the head.

Rhaedas@fedia.io · 72 pts · 3d (23 replies)

There's no way they could have known. It's not like he had a history going back into the 70s and 60s of being a... oh, yeah. He did.

You know the joke in Back to the Future where Marty tells Doc the President is Reagan, and he says incredulously, "What? The actor?" Well, imagine going back to any point in the latter 20th century and telling someone that Trump will be President. Anyone would laugh, no matter what party affiliation. Seems we all had standards back then, even if they were still low.

The reason is simply because he's the perfect tool that the Southern Strategy dreamed of. They never had an idea it would work so well.

GraniteM@lemmy.world · 31 pts · 3d

They knew Trump was a scumbag back when they made Back to the Future 2! You think this...

Hell, the Simpsons made fun of the idea.

The DNC pretty much handed him 2016, and Biden handed him 2024.

The two parties are both trash, and the citizens just rolling over and taking it up the ass, doesn't help.

Natanael@infosec.pub · 6 pts · 3d

Trump still lost the majority the first time and got under 50% the second time. USA's insane election system caused much of it, as well as a failure of the campaigns to account for how it would play out in the uncertain states.

2024 was much more a media propaganda problem, although I agree they didn't do enough to push back. They could've used the presidency to force the message to be delivered along with evidence of Trump's corruption and they decided to "play nice" against the cheater

ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 3d

Spy magazine back in the '80s used to have an annual "10 worst people, places and things" issue. Trump always made the list, although it was more of an NYC-centric thing. Each listee always had a "mitigating factors" item and Trump's was always "at least he's not in politics". :(

My favorite bit from back then was that Trump once offered to pay for the funeral of a child who had been killed by a bear, and then reneged on the offer.

Buffalox@lemmy.world · -15 pts · 3d (17 replies)

There’s no way they could have known.

They couldn't have known an obvious malignant narcissist would behave like a malignant narcissist? Is that really your claim?
For that to be true, you'd have to be so stupid you wouldn't be able to find the polling station either.

Edit:
It doesn't change anything that he quotes a movie, he picked that quote to make that point. And it is simply wrong.

No you have to agree with the psychopath to not be able to see it, and if you agree, you are no better yourself.
Only a psychopath don't recognize a psychopath. And Malignant Narcissist is the worst kind of Psychopath there is.

Also it doesn't look like sarcasm to me, quoting a movie is not sarcasm.
And Reagan is irrelevant to American voters voting for an obvious psychopath. For instance the situation with Russia was completely different. And Reagan actually had coherent policies.
Also Emmett Browns surprise is acting. It is not real.

Rhaedas@fedia.io · 15 pts · 3d (7 replies)

You should look it up. It will make you realize how deep this goes. Can't help you with the rest, it was pretty clear, unless you also don't understand the movie reference. Which is entirely possible, it's amazing how many memes are shared by people these days who are clueless on the origins. A true loss.

Buffalox@lemmy.world · -9 pts · 3d (6 replies)

Edit:
Yes I know the movie, I just don't see how it's relevant. You quoted that because you mean it.

There’s no way they could have known

I doesn't change anything that you are quoting a movie where the statement may have been correct.
In the context you use it here it is simply wrong.
In general it takes a psychopath to not detect an obvious psychopath consistently behaving like a psychopath, that's a fact.

Rhaedas@fedia.io · 8 pts · 3d

I'm sorry that you missed many levels of understanding my original post. I wish you could have just asked for clarification instead of the diatribe of anger. Soupbreaker@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 3d
phutatorius@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 2d (1 reply)

And Reagan actually had coherent policies.

Not really, he was more amenable than Trump is to having handlers. And the policies he implemented caused lasting damage to the American system and to its people. For example, trickle-down economics was utter incoherent evidence-free bullshit that happened to make the rich richer at the expense of everyone else. Reagan was not too bright and had an utter lack of curiosity, was a racist homophobe, and was quite happy to be a pitchman. He was also a shameless liar, though not to Trump's pathological extent.

Buffalox@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 2d

Trickle down economics were not incoherent, they were a lie. Reagan did not change policy every other week like Trump does.
I do not agree with Reagans policies, but it was far more than just listening more to his advisors, it was also choosing advisors that were actually capable.
So I maintain that Reagans policies were definitely way way more coherent AND consistent than what we see with Trump. And his strategy to pressure Soviet Union actually worked, Soviet Union collapsed because they couldn't keep up, and their attempt to do it, collapsed their economy.

Reagan also didn't ruin relations with allies, but he did introduce a lot of policies that are bad for the middle and especially lower income brackets.

If it wasn't for the whole war thing, it'd be damn near a fairly good implementation of socialism.

Except for the role of being an imperialist soldier, a cog in the murderous machine. Sure.

blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 3d (3 replies)

You have to know that's not in the brochure or spiel they give to these impoverished kids who barely have enough of an education to read a whole sentence.

And even if it was, it's not like they would have any of the tools to even start understanding the concept after 18 years of living under US conservative media as the sole source of information and perspective.

These kids sign up literally not knowing any better, for the promise of something better on the other end. It's stupid to suggest they're doing it to choose to advance American imperialism after surveying all other options and considering the moral and tangible outcomes of all the choices they think they have at 18 years old.

MonkeMischief@lemmy.today · 4 pts · 3d

You're right. It's a tempting prospect when college isn't an option. It really is socialism on the surface:

They'll take you no matter your existing skills or education, teach you discipline and more skills, push you into peak physical condition, constant opportunities for learning, clear opportunities for advancement, and they'll make you feel like you're part of something. Plus you get out and the government promises to take care of you.

(Or betray you entirely. Veterans have such split experiences here, it seems like!)

The rest of the country says "Lol no bachelor's and 6 years experience? Kick rocks and be poor, loser. Lol."

Thanks to all the DoD (oh sorry "DoW" /s) funded entertainment propaganda, play any Call of Duty game (especially the fun ones) and you'll start to get that feeling that to be a soldier is to have purpose, to fight evil, to become something more.

It's freaking dangerous. But heck yeah it's attractive as any deal with the devil is. I refuse to swear an oath to any authority but my Creator, but I'd be lying if I didn't sometimes entertain the notion that I could like, monitor weather in Space Force or something for 4 years and reap tons of benefits.

...But yeah, look who's in charge. Terrifying. I'm SO GLAD I've stayed far away.

It's a weird benefit of populist, anti-establishment candidates.

They're just not held to the same standards and their supporters are very dismissive of any wrong doing.

It's the same with Farage in the UK. We have a populist Pauline Hanson here in Australia who's the same.

I don't really have any plausible explanation.

yakko@feddit.uk · 3 pts · 3d

Authoritarian followers do not introspect, and they compartmentalise their beliefs to sustain contradiction. They are quick to forget the insults and failures of the dear leader, who tends to be deep into dark triad territory and is knowingly exploiting their collective frailty.

kent_eh@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 2d (7 replies)

I don't really have any plausible explanation

Far too many people want simple (and therefore simplistic) answers to complex problems.

And that's exactly what populists offer them.

Of course, in the real world, complex problems never have simple solutions that actually work.

And, usually, those simple solutions cause more problems than they solve.

im_fine_sandy@nord.pub · 1 pts · 2d (6 replies)

Yes, but that doesn't explain why populists get a free pass on their bullshit. For example, Trump's obvious connection with a paedophile ring.

I wonder if most of the enlisted are the boot lickers and when you get to being a CO you have to develop your understanding of the world and geopolitics so you have more exposure to truth of lies.

Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 2d (3 replies)

Funny enough, typically the opposite.

The enlisted corps is a much more racially, ethnically, and financially diverse corps than the officer corps. Enlisted across the active duty is 66% white, 34% minority group, with 22% Hispanic or Latino, according to the most recent annual demographic release (2024). For officers it is 74% white and 26% minority, with only 10% Hispanic or Latino. This tends to bring in more diverse opinions as well. Officers tend to come from heavily white and upper-middle class households, which skew Republican. Enlisted come from all over, and more closely mirror the general population.

The enlisted corps also skews much younger than the officer corps, due to the revolving nature of enlistment. Most guys do a single 4-6 year enlistment and get out, while most officers are career. Only 25-40% of enlisted re-up, and only 10-12% make it to 20 years, while 60-70% of officers go beyond their initial contract, and 45-50% make it to 20 years. The average age of an enlisted troop is 27.4 years old, with 49.2% being 25 or younger and only 5.1% being over 41. For officers the average age is 34.3, with 22.4% being above the age of 41.

You're also MUCH more intermingled in the enlisted corps. You're in forced proximity to people that are diverse and get exposed to diverse opinions, whereas the officer corps generally stick to their own kind away from the enlisted and stay insulated.

That ends up resulting in officers being much more reliably Republican, and Republican specifically, than enlisted. Enlisted still skew conservative, but there are far more registered Democrats in the enlisted corps, and the enlisted are FAR more likely to identify as independent rather than with either party. Officers skew more conservative AND identify as Republican more than independent.

One of the most basic lessons of Christianity is the need to ask for forgiveness. Trump once held up a bible for a photo op, we keep hearing rumblings of Christian Nationalism apparently from this current administration, and Trump now declares, "I'll never apologize." That's about as anti-Christian as a message can be.

That kind of narrative is perfect for a narcissist, by the way: the "I'm not perfect, I'm forgiven" is a great way to get out of ever apologizing for your behavior, here, in reality - "I worked it out with Jesus" is handing narcissists a perfect cop-out, since narcissists will do nearly anything but ever give a genuine apology to another human being.

Anyone that has ever had to deal with a narcissist has probably noticed they will almost never apologize.

That ship should have sailed when he mocked John McCain, a guy that spent 6 years in a POW camp after being shot down over Vietnam. In a sane world, he'd lose the military vote right then and there, forever.

Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 2d

In a sane world the vets who actually give a shit would have jumped ship when the pedo pissed all over the sanctity of Arlington, and had his people assault an Army employee, for a photo op

It's a very, very mad world we live in

DarkFuture@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 2d

There's a pretty long list of occasions where Trump has insulted the military as a whole as well as individual members of the military and it appears the average military service member either isn't aware or is neck deep in the cult so Dear Leader is always right.

impairedimperator@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 2d

I don't think the kind of vets that wear grunt style and have bumper srickers about them being veterans were ever in a position to experience deployment.

Some of you may die but, that's a sacrifice I am willing to make.

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Donald Trump is a cartoon character who escaped from the silver screen...

Let's put him on one for that many days without his creature comforts and see what he thinks after that.

Doesn't matter if it's made an official holiday by the government. The people of this nation (world) are gonna make it a national (international) holiday by sheer force of will.

I'll celebrate it like Christmas every year. I'll call in sick every year on the day if I have to.

It's what he has always done.

As long as he thinks he can make a nickel of profit, he will bulldoze right through you.

You hear that, navy boys? Time for mutiny. He's not going to send you home.

I guarantee someone onboard said something trump didn't like, so this is their "punishment".

Patrikvo@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 3d (11 replies)

Do modern sailors still do the "long walk on a short plank" thing?

ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 3d (10 replies)

Fun fact: "walking the plank" was a myth made up by Hollywood. And think about it, would you bother having the ship's carpenter build a temporary diving board out of precious timber when you could just throw the person overboard instead? There was a punishment called "walking the yard" where they made a man walk off the end of one of the cross-members that held the sails; whether you survived or not depended on the weather and how high up the yard was. Not as cinematic as walking the plank, though.

I don't think I've ever seen a movie where they showed keelhauling or flogging around the fleet.

VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 2d (3 replies)

Black Sails showed keelhauling in a late episode.

ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2d (2 replies)

I'll have to check that out, thanks for the rec.

VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d (1 reply)

It's actually a prequel to Treasure Island. It's a pretty fun show, but historical accuracy isn't a high priority. It's also from Stars, so the first season has a lot of gratuitous nudity, but it gets scaled way back starting from the second season.

I want to see Blackbeard getting a cheesesteak in Philly.

Really should've been called "Killhulling" now that I think of it

capt_wolf@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2d (1 reply)

Keelhauling would be far more interesting and entertaining if done on an aircraft carrier.

and done to trump.

They showed keelhauling in a pirate show I watched. I don't remember the name of it though.

ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d (1 reply)

"Black Sails", another person here just mentioned it to me.

lightnsfw@reddthat.com · 1 pts · 2d

Yeah that's it. It was a pretty good show.
