2027: “Do you really need three meals a day?”

JustJack23@slrpnk.net · 93 pts · 18h (1 reply)
AmyAye@nord.pub · 20 pts · 13h

Yeah but we didn't listen and now all the food is poison.

SomethingBurger@jlai.lu · 5 pts · 11h (2 replies)

Well, technically, you don't. If you eat enough calories in a single sitting, you only need one meal a day.

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 5 pts · 11h (1 reply)

It's possible, but the spikes and drops in metabolic rates doesn't work for everybody. If you're fit and healthy you can probably handle it, but many people need more steady metabolism throughout the day.

Also, your body can only absorb so many nutrients at once. If you try packing all your daily requirements into one meal, you're going to shit a lot of it out. You might absorb all 2000 calories or whatever, but most of the vitamins, proteins, etc. are going to get flushed down your toilet

God I hate how this may actually be the motivation behind this article.

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 11h

Fucking bingo.

otter@lemmy.ca · 92 pts · 17h (21 replies)

Looked at the article, and it starts off pretty stupid

While everyone else seems to be slugging H20 from 40-ounce Stanley tumblers, I have never understood the appeal of drinking plain, tasteless water all day.

Some people live in areas where the water tastes bad, but seeing the water as "boring" might mean that you're drinking too much of the other stuff (soft drinks, juice, sugary etc). It's not that those other things are not hydrating, but they're unhealthy for other reasons.

The question feels more pressing than ever given rising temperatures, heat waves

I refuse to normalize a world where people lack access to clean drinking water. 😠

The rest of the article is pretty standard advice. There's no set amount of water that everyone needs to drink, and your diet/lifestyle/body composition/the weather will all play a role. Going based on thirst is a good indicator, but make sure you actually drink water when you're thirsty. !hydrohomies@lemmy.ml

But using that to justify unequal access to clean drinking water is a big no.

Zombie@feddit.uk · 18 pts · 14h (1 reply)

And if you're in the subset of people who struggle to register thirst, either through perceiving it as hunger or just not registering it at all; use the pee test.

If your last pee was yellow, drink some water. If clear or nearly clear, you're fine.

If brown, drink lots of water and pray to Dionysus to become hydrated before the hangover kicks in.

Micromot@piefed.social · 3 pts · 11h

Fully clear usually means stop drinking water for now. It signifies you have had a bit too much water

flandish@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 13h (2 replies)

too much of the other stuff

or that you’re a shill , writing a seo prop piece knowing full well coke is a financial supporter of your “newspaper”

Dozzi92@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 12h (1 reply)

And I think it's even broader: If I'm drinking water, I'm not buying any other drinks. I'm not supporting the economy, I'm only drinking water.

flandish@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 11h

thats basically what i was thinking too.

AmyAye@nord.pub · 11 pts · 13h

The author of the article seems to think people use water bottles because they justlike, enjoy drinking water constsntly for no reason. (Its fine if you do) Or some "misguided" advice about how much to drink daily.

When people probably just carry them so when they are thirsty, they have something cheap and not unhealthy to drink.

Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 14h (4 replies)

Going based on thirst is a good indicator,

After many visits for my daughter with different doctors, all of which were different specializations, the consistent advice from all of them was "going by thirst" is absolutely wrong.

They each said if you wait to be thirsty, you are already dehydrated.

Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 13h

You should drink whenever you want to, or are mentally thirsty. That being said, after many years of being a child in school (water fountains tasted like drinking chalk), i had to train myself to feel thirsty again without being dehydrated. Probably a safer bet to just go by pee color or have a cup or two of water at dinner/during exercise.

boonhet@lemmy.zip · 0 pts · 12h (2 replies)

The combination of these two takes has to be among the dumbest things I've ever read, what do they think those other drinks are made of? I'm entirely certain that the process of making another drink uses up more water than just drinking that volume of water in the first place.

Author, you don't need the 40 oz cup.

Quoted Expert, you need around 125 oz a day.

Author, but water is so boring and tasteless, I want sugar and you get a fraction of water from food right? I don't wanna drink water. Written Toddler Tantrum ensues

Author, so in conclusion you don't need that 40 oz water cup.

nednobbins@lemmy.zip · 10 pts · 3h (2 replies)

It has some grains of truth but it's mingled with too much personal opinion.

There are studies on how much water humans really need. If you want to calculate it the scientific way, you need to factor in at least lean muscle mass, total mass, surface area, ambient temperature and humidity, activity levels, and diet. There's no magic number of ounces that's correct for everyone.

Fortunately we've evolved a really awesome mechanism. When your body needs more water, you get thirsty.

So if you want to stay properly hydrated, drink whenever you feel even a little thirsty.

ironpangolin29@lemmy.ca · 6 pts · 3h

We can seperate regions easily enough and their peak humidity seasons. You just need to factor in sedentary, semi active, active and athletic lifestyles.

Except it's completely true - rare for WSJ, I know, but not completely unheard of. The weird hype around really unnecessarily excessive water intake is "Facebook Grandma Nutrition"-level bullshit. Healthy people have a reliable, fine-tuned mechanism for figuring out when water is needed: it's called being fucking thirsty

RichardDegenne@lemmy.zip · 23 pts · 16h (2 replies)

1.2 L is cleary not in the realm of "unnecessarily excessive water intake" though.

dreugeworst@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 14h (1 reply)

over an entire day, sure. needing to carry a 1.2l container around all day seems to me overkill. carry a smaller bottle, refill it when needed, drink a glass of water with your meals etc. remember, juice, tea, coffee, coke etc are mostly water and also count towards your water intake

Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 9h

carry a smaller bottle, refill it when needed

Depending on where you live, you may not have access to a fountain by the time you need more. I carry around slightly less large bottle (1L) and you can bet your ass I had gone through it on the days when I had to be outside in 100+F/38+C weather for hours, and I got home thirsty. It is way better to have too much water and not need it than to not have enough and need it.

Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus · 17 pts · 16h (5 replies)

Sadly that is something many people can't rely upon. I am not that old, and have a tendency to get pretty dehydrated before i get thirsty at all. Old people are famous for getting so dehydrated that they get delirious - ask any nurse working in a hospital, they will agree that this is the case. With summer temperatures rising this will hit a lot more people of the already affected groups, and additional groups which are not sensitized yet towards that issue.

I agree that most people do not need to drink 3 liters of water per day. But what happens is that people aim for that amount and then land somewhere around 1.5-2 liters / day, which is a pretty good amount for normal days, and they will be more alert towards their water intake on hot days, which prevents deaths.

Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 14h (3 replies)

Thirst is something no one can rely on. This is the same information I got from multiple doctors each in different fields.

By the time you register thirst, you are already dehydrated.

Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus · 3 pts · 13h (2 replies)

There is a difference between "drinking a glass of water wouldn't hurt you" and "you are dehydrated and it is medically relevant". Every organism on this planet can easily cope with a reduction in available water if it isn't severe. The operating conditions of a human body, if formalized, would only state a minimum of water intake, because the optimal amount of hydration varies wildly from person to person, and it is also dependent on outside circumstances, like heavy work or high temperatures.

During the winter months, i am completely fine with around 1 liter of fluid intake per day most of the time when sedentary. During the last 2 months, i have topped out at around 7 liters/day (i do sweat a lot), which made me a bit nervous and i made sure to increase my normally very low salt intake a bit, to prevent running out of electrolytes.

Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 12h (1 reply)

“you are dehydrated and it is medically relevant”

Which is why "thirsty" as an indicator is the problem. It is your body telling you there is already a problem.

Every organism on this planet can easily cope

You can easily cope with all manner of problems. You can go 2 months without Vitamin C. You shouldn't wait until you develop the first signs of scurvy before eating an orange.

Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus · 3 pts · 12h

I just wanted to emphasize that optimal fluid intake is not a simple number - anyone peddling that is full of shit.

yetAnotherUser@discuss.tchncs.de · 3 pts · 13h

1.5 - 2 liters a day is perfectly fine if you don't just eat dry, salty food. Vegetables contain a ton of water.

Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 14h

Reposting because this is completely wrong.

After many visits for my daughter with different doctors, all of which were different specializations, the consistent advice from all of them was "going by thirst" is absolutely wrong.

antianarchist@sopuli.xyz · 4 pts · 13h

Yeah, until that mechanism isn’t working anymore, as distraction nowadays is a real issue. Too often I forget about water intake if I don’t have water next to me.

Additionally, go ask dermatologist what they think about water intake. You can literally see differences in skin health, especially long-term damage which cannot be reversed.
