Gas in my region is well over $5 a gallon I don't notice because we went from 2 cars to 1, and the one is an EV.

There are a lot of things people can do on their own... in a world where the median US income isn't $45,000 and responsible and capable products aren't tariffed to hell.

Mass adoption comes with affordability which comes with support and clear, intentional direction. Consumers don't shift paradigms when they think the new paradigm won't go anywhere. We can't even get people off of X - and that costs NOTHING.

Electrifying on your own is prohibitively expensive for most people, and the fact that those people have to be prepared to also pay an additional premium because they're fighting their own government at the same time, in a period in time where people can barely afford FOOD, is not tenable.

The fact that more employers haven't jumped at WFH is so telling. It's basically equivalent to an increase in salary, an improvement in employee work life balance, and a wider recruitment pool all wrapped into one without them actually having to do anything, except maybe spend LESS money on overhead.

It's something we could easily change to improve the lives of everyone and help the environment. I'm really disappointed we're not seeing more support for it.

Well, neverminding the 12.2 mile distance, my only option besides a freeway would be a road that is four lane with no sidewalks (it's technically suburban but for most of the way there's only the occasional house or business, so I would be in the right lane all the way) with a speed limit of 45 and no street lights.

As a wheelchair user, I'd have to use a four-wheel device. I don't know the range on those because I don't own one.

In some ways, it was worse - when I lived in the same city as the dialysis place, before I was driving again, I took paratransit. Although it's a "shared ride" and sometimes I'd actually have a fellow passenger, most of the time it was just me in the van. heh.

(Although I know for a fact that during "rush hour" they would sometimes have entire groups going close enough to need a van)

Oof. It would be hilarious to try and take the bus to the Amtrak station in the city in which I live, go up one station to the city in which the dialysis center is located, take the bus to dialysis, have my dialysis, then go back. I'm not sure I could do that in a single day. Certainly not my chair time of 6:00am. But let's see:

Well, alright. Actually, Amtrak ticket would be $11, which is not bad. And while the ride would be 4:21am-4:20am, I wouldn't be able to get a bus until 6:00, getting to dialysis 25 minutes late.

The first obstacle is that I would have to leave my apartment for the Amtrak station at 11:30pm the previous day, as service doesn't run in the middle of the night.

My understanding is that paint is only very rarely stripped out of existing houses. It's normally just painted over.

In the US, lead paint prohibitions went into place in 1978.

So unless you've avoided being in buildings constructed prior to 1978, you have probably been in buildings with lead paint.

That's not to say that there aren't benefits to painting over lead paint. I'm sure that it reduces the amount of leaded paint dust and such. But a chip can still contain paint from an earlier coat.

When my kids were little and we were moving into our new to us house, built in 1946, they also cautioned about the outside. Treat 10’ around the house as potentially contaminated from peeling exterior paint. No vegetable gardens in that dirt. No kids playing in that dirt

The risk of lead absorption via skin contact isn't worth even thinking about. So unless the kids were eating substantial volumes of dirt, that's absurdly over-cautious. If you keep them indoors and feed them a tuna sandwich, the mercury dose will exceed the damage done by exposure to lead in household soil, unless something well out of the ordinary is happening.

And as long as you don't eat it and you dispose of it immediately, it's not going to hurt you.

It's good that we terminated the production of lead paint, but unless you're in substandard, ill-maintained housing, you face far greater toxic risks from other household chemicals, gas stoves, old asbestos insulation, etc.

The bigger lead exposure back in the day was from breathing in particulate emissions from the burning of leaded gasoline. People's lead levels correlated pretty closely with proximity and volume of nearby vehicular traffic.

Eating paint chips was never a big contributor, unless the person was living in some crumbling, damp tenement that was seldom cleaned. It just got popularized by some bullshit Freakonomics pseudo-analysis.

I'm living in one, or at least the 15-minute part of one. Small city in southwest England. I drive about once a week, to go out to the countryside to hike and visit a pub. Everything else is done on foot or on a bicycle. Highly recommended, despite it being totally evil. My MAGA relatives fear that I'm living in some hellish dystopia and it's only a matter of weeks before I'll be shot if I try to leave the city limits. They're already spun up enough that I don't own a gun and that I get my medical treatment on the NHS (which is under stress nationally, but still works well where I live). "Death panels," y'know...

Now, if only the locals could figure out how to make decent Mexican food, I'd be perfectly content.
