So, it's either healthcare subsidies or food? You can't have both? Even though we had both before Republicans took it all away, so they could give tax breaks to Trump's rich donors?
Fuck these assholes.

It's also a bit of PR nightmare for the GOP. Trump defying the court order shifts the blame back onto them.
FancyPantsFIRE@lemmy.world · 111 pts · 306d
In a less polarized and post truth world you’d probably be right. I fear however that the solid 36-37% maga base will never find an issue that can’t be spun or rationalized. In the magasphere this situation seems to be framed as the GOP stepping up to fight against free health care for illegal immigrants which seems divorced from reality.

It's not an accident...
When Nixon resigned, Roger Ailes wrote a memo that accidentally ended up in the icon presidential library:
https://www.poynter.org/reporting-editing/2011/memo-from-1970-a-plan-for-putting-the-gop-on-tv-news/
They knew that if they owned the media, they could control what people thought, and no republican president would ever have to resign due to public outcry again.
Luckily, he was held back by federal regulations, until a good ole capitalist from Arkansas got elected and decided anyone should be able to own media in America:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecommunications_Act_of_1996
After that it was gloves off and the billionaires gobbled up every aspect of the "news" industry and maintain almost exclusive control over what a majority of Americans hear.
CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 306d
TBF, the problem with media was well underway before Clinton came along. The Fairness Doctrine being done away with under Ronnie Raygun opened the floodgates.

Trump is posting on social media that Biden's administration was just giving SNAP benefits away. His idiot supporters are gonna believe it.
DrFistington@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 305d
Yeah, but most of the hardcore maga base is going to die within 10 years, but waaaayyyy sooner if Trump keeps cutting snap and Medicaid. Then you'll be left with the few capable white supremacist MAGAts, and a lot of out of shape brainwashed dipshits who will either scatter into the shadows or fall in line and shut the fuck up real quick
mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de · 3 pts · 305d
I truly think that a good amount of these people could be personally executed by Trump shooting them in the chest, and while Trump says "I know what you are and I hate you" they would lay there dying and say "Oh it's okay, I know you didn't mean that. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes. I still support what you're doing overall." or possibly even "I guess I do deserve to die if you say so".
Now I will say the majority of even the maga team is not this nuts. But some definitely are. Many humans have unfortunately had the privilege to never interact with the kind of person who will truly never change their mind. I've known one or two, and it's a really mind-expanding experience, almost like you're meeting an extraterrestrial. It's hard for people who haven't seen them to believe 👽 lol

This is literally how we got here. Dems capitulated over and over during Obama's presidency to keep programs like SNAP going, and Republicans have run the same strategy ever since. Stonewall everything as long as you can, and blame it on the other side the entire time. And people eat it up every single time.
axexrx@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 306d
I feel like dems should add to their list of demands- if the Rs dont agree to reverse course on Healthcare now, dems will not agree to reopen until all missed snap benefits are paid back retroactively- if it goes another week, they will not vote until ice is fully refunded, etc

"sound the alarm", horseshit. Just file the articles of impeachment and make the senators vote openly that they believe the executive branch ignoring a court order is okay. Senators should have to openly say it's okay to not remove someone for not following the rules /"laws" of the republic. Then as Trump keeps fucking everything up the Senators will have to realize either A. They are willing to surrender their job/career/ country to back a tryant,or B. They need to jump ship.
If its fine to not listen to the courts, then there is no reason for congress to exist. Their job is to write legislation that the courts ensure breakers of that legislation are punished.
They should have done so on many other occasions, but their failures are only adding up.
oxysis@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 43 pts · 306d
File the articles of impeachment over every single illegal action he is undertaking. Make it so congress is constantly dealing with impeachment hearing every second of every day till he is dead and buried.
While doing that make sure that you call for a constitutional convention, not an amendment or a series if amendments. A full on new constitution is needed to clear the shit out.
While the House of Representatives remains out have all the democratic representatives meet and broadcast it publicly. Do that every single day, talk policy and reforms and ask republican representatives to join the meeting. Make it painfully obvious that the democrats want to have a functioning government and not be held out like this endlessly.
Anyways tangent over.
krashmo@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 305d
You do not want a constitutional convention in this political climate. Amending the constitution requires 3/4 of state legislatures to ratify the amendment. Considering a solid majority of states have Republican controlled legislatures, the only things we're likely to get from a convention are amendments banning DEI initiatives and trans people in sports, or something even worse.
LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 306d
I say they amend the constitution to make it 1/4 vote congress impeach, 1/3 vote removes. VP is not picked by President, it is the second most votes like when the country started. Then you put oversight committees on every executive organization and they answer directly to congress. Get rid of "executive powers" that come from declaring emergencies and etc. So impeaching president puts the VP (most likely their running opponent). Then the 3rd votes goes to VP and an emergency vote is taken place, to put a new Senate backup.
Or I've said before: dissolve the executive branch, and place all of the organizations under the legislature, and make a 3rd party review committee that evaluates if legislation, and judicial is being created to overpower the judicial branch or corrupt. And all organizations under the executive answer directly to congress.
Or, dissolve the Senate and the Executive... Place everything under Congress, expand the supreme Court to 50 judges one from each state. (Still would need some oversight)
But the idea is to make it so population of individuals is easily defeated, and we don't have giant stupid news buyouts every 4 years to make 1 position something it was never meant to me. If you don't want a king, kill the position
Canconda@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 306d
That would work if it weren't for the gullibility of republican voters. GOP is clearly the ones at fault for the current shut down, yet they've convinced half of their supporters to blame democrats based on literally nothing.
So if the senate refuses to ratify any impeachment than all the GOP has to do is yell "TDS" and all their criminally stupid supporters would believe it no questions asked.
Not really different from our current reality tho

The events of January 6th suggest Trump would be willing to mass execute congress if he didn't need them anymore
Jaysyn@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 305d
IIRC, Articles of Impeachment against the President are filed in the House, not the Senate.
LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 305d
The articles of impeachment are the house, the removal is the Senate. Requires 2/3. It's why Trump was not removed during his 1st term. Impeached twice, and the Senate never voted to remove, the second time saying it was so close to the end it doesn't matter if we vote. (It did matter, he most likely wouldn't be president now if they had)

We're approaching a huge turning point in US (and world) history. Either republicans are going to mostly lose for a long time (at least 6 years if I were to guess), maybe until they demonstrate they've changed, OR they are going to succeed at rigging or cancelling elections so they don't have to give up power. I don't think we can expect much in between those two extremes. Makes my stomach queasy as hell to think about.

TheHighRoad@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 305d

I'm so confused. I heard that people won't be getting SNAP benefits. Then I heard that two judges ordered Trump to give them their benefits after all. Then I heard that it's only being partially funded (I guess people are expected to eat only 3-4 days a week). Then I heard Trump is refusing to fund it. Then I heard the Whitehouse said it is being funded despite Trump's social media posts saying otherwise.
So are people getting to eat or aren't they?

Ive lived in the hood, and everyone there was selling their SNAP. I did.
Just some 1st hand knowledge for you posers.
P.s. I know some people do legit use though too, I did that too. It just is what it is.

SNAP is delegated to the states and can function in a federal shutdown.
People will find ways to game any welfare system, but that's not a reason to look down on them. RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 303d
I'm talking about a system of government with two entirely separate parties in charge, and one where the Republicans hold most of the actual power, until yesterday, so I don't really follow how it could possibly be just the Dems fault.
What I do follow is that the Republicans lie about every possible thing they can, no matter how big or small, or what the situation is, or what's been proven, like, 35 seconds earlier.
Pacattack57@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 304d
Your first sentence is wrong. There your question is answered. Snap is pre-funded. Meaning when the government is shut down, there is still money for Snap to pay its employees and administer benefits.
Now that you k ow that do you want to rethink your other questions?
