No, those 77 million people are not all like this cop.
You can call them stupid, and you'd be right - but there are plenty of well meaning idiots in MAGA. That doesn't change the fact that they should all be worked like dogs until they pay everyone they've fucked over - but they aren't all like this guy. Many of them are just incredibly stupid.
I don’t believe this. I want to believe it, but for my entire life I’ve only ever been treated like fucking shit by the people who vote Republican. Like these people literally want me to die. I’m sorry but there’s nothing that you can say that will convince me that they’re just morons and not actually evil assholes and bigots.
I think it's a bit (ironically) disingenuous to call them stupid; they're just as smart as everyone else which is why it's so terrifying that they actively vote against their own best interests. They do so because by hurting themselves, they are also hurting the people they want to hurt and exclude. It's why they don't want healthcare for all, or free tuition, etc., that means 'ethnics' get it too, and they don't want that.
no there really aren't man, there's people who didn't know better and voted trump the first time, but the magas are people who are bad people and see that trump is a bad person, and that's precisely why they voted for him.
It's not about intelligence or "evil", it's about them knowing they make a living off of lies and fraud and abuse and putting someone in power who makes his money the same way.
So you think that every one of those 77 million people makes their money through lies, fraud, and abuse?
No. That is simply unreasonable, and I'd be willing to say statistically impossible considering how many blue collar workers voted Trump. Who am I kidding? This is Lemmy, where only the correct labor (like being a white collar worker in high tech) is appreciated, the rest are just lies.
Either his tiny pea-brain couldn't think of an alternative to punching a waifish 18 year old girl or he found a perfect target for his mysoginistic outbursts.
They've been allowed to get away with too much of this shit, and now they're learning that they can get away with anything.
She was doing literally nothing before he slams her to the ground, and then he punches her in the face and threatens to do it again, saying "Who said I can't punch you in your face?"
Holy shit. These people need to face consequences for abusing their authority. Qualified immunity was a huge mistake.
It's a civil trial, so doesn't sound like he'll actually face criminal punishment. I hope she wins millions, but even if she does it will be the tax payer footing the bill.
Settlements for misdeeds should come out of the police pension fund. and take that motherfucker into the negatives. force it to take out loans and sell off investments, to cover every single settlement.
See how long they last enjoying their gratifying abuse of the peasantry when their pension fund is 370 million dollars in the hole, and no ones getting a dime.
Solve this the American way and it will be politically easier. Just require them to carry malpractice insurance like doctors do. The problem would be solved overnight, insurance won’t cover the bad apples.
It’d also be interesting to see how the group dynamics play out when the real shitty cops start costing the simple enablers money out of their own retirement pockets….
So a loyalist who was against the terrorist murder rapists known as our founding fathers where the same as someone hundreds of years later who unironically supports police brutality!?
Even forgetting the transgressions of the aristocracy back then, Sure Brittian were colonizers which is fucking awful, but then what did the colony do once it had freedom? Colonize the whole fucking landmass and only stop when they were adequately challenged to the north and south.
I think it is absolutely ridiculous comparing these two symbols. Loyalists were not going around bombing and murdering people. It was the wealthy colonists involved in a conspiracy to take control so they could enrich themselves. Everything else is just propaganda.
Yes that's what pursuit of happiness means. One of our main gripes with Britain was that they were enriching themselves with our natural resources and then selling the finished products back to us at huge surcharges. We threw off the yolk of a colonial empire.
Yeah, not buying it. It was a bunch of wealthy shitheads who did a lot of horrible things and produced probably the most destructive nation in history.
Well "defenestrate the police" would be a much better slogan, you're right, but that one will get you arrested just for changing it, so some compromises are necessary.
I think it was a response to the way police fuck up and then get more taxpayer money for training, which also means more overtime pay to cover the time spent training.
So they beat people up and get a bigger budget. Rinse, repeat.
Fuck this pig. Someone twice his size should body slam him, straddle him, force him into submission, punch him in the face, and openly mock his objections. I’d like him to know the terror and pain that little girl felt. It’s the least of what he deserves.
Would love to see a trained much smaller person no holds barred him in seconds. Destroy his ego. Big means something to him and having that power taken away would be soul crushing.
Let his peers publicly shame him. Cops love to do that. It’ll hurt more when his “friends” are showing their true colors.
Pension, gone. Immunity, gone. Let the man enjoy the consequences of his actions.
The punch unecessary and excessive. The slam unnecessary and excessive. The alleged open container is enough to bring her in to test her but she doesnt have the right to call her mom in this immediate situation. He should have deescalated the situation by advising her why he's detaining her and explain she can call her from the jail. This guy had an ego trip and just wanted to beat a black woman. She kind of knew her rights. American police are poorly trained and not punished harsh enough for what they do. When the police are punished they get paid leave and the payouts come from the city rather than the individual or the police budget.
Jesus it looks like he was trying to cuff her (why? she was going 11 over the speed limit?) and then lost control because nobody likes going in cuffs. So then he follows up this dumbass decision to arrest her by throwing her down to put cuffs on her. She lands on her back (fucking ouch) so he can't cuff her in the front and wants her to flip over. He can't do it because she is stronger than him so he decides to beat and threaten her until he gets what he wants. Then after she is arrested and even less of a threat he decides to slam her into the hood of the car for no fucking reason. Even by pig standards this is grossly excessive and fucking disgusting.
It might but it will be like he is shifted to a new precinct and she gets paid a 6-7 figure settlement from taxpayer money because unlike any other service profession (healthcare, legal, customer service) cops don’t have to deal with liability when they fuck up and you pay for their “whoopsies”
I pay $3200 a year for malpractice insurance that covers up to a 3 million dollar settlement if I fuck up. Said insurance also requires I maintain licensure and certifications that demand I do 20-30 hours of continuing education a year to ensure I keep training up, and 5 hours of this must be related to ethics. I am in behavioral health, my colleagues that work in physical health pay substantially more given the increased risk (though they’re also paid a lot more). Why dont cops need to do something similar? In many areas they are paid obscene amounts of money, for what? Or just gut the system altogether and start over because it’s crystal clear the rot runs extremely deep
His girlfriend wouldn't peg him before shift any longer and he had so much rage its all he could do to wait for some outlet so the voice of Goebbels stops echoing in his skull.
Cops should be trained to never punch anything ever, that's how boxers and fighters are taught actually first day in the gym --- without proper gloves you should never punch anything, high risk of breaking your own hand.
It's just a complete lack of training, or just counterproductive training, because no trained teacher/coach will ever tell you to punch something without proper gloves fastened and secured.
Is this the woman who was caught speeding with alcohol on hand two days ago but was let off, and then was caught again doing the exact same thing? She’s not a victim here. Shes a repeat offender who was resisting a justified arrest
Edit: this isn’t justifying the officer’s attack, just providing some missing context to why. She should be arrested for her actions. She of course shouldn’t be assaulted
Arellano began placing Hackett under arrest. He said he saw alcohol in the car and learned another trooper had pulled her over days earlier and also found an open container.
The media reporting that "he said he saw alcohol." Not "alcohol was found in the vehicle." Not "was charged for having open alcohol while driving" if which there would need to be physical evidence.
Learned another trooper had found alcohol days earlier. Not "was arrested for having alcohol in the vehicle" of which there would be an actual record.
Are you certain there was any alcohol, or do you think he's making up an excuse for his behavior and the media and his fellow officers are providing him cover?
Well there was one time I heard about a cop telling the truth. He complained about the abuse and fraud in the LAPD. He filed complaints appropriately and then he got written up, told he needed to improve.
Eventually, he was fired and declared war on the LAPD and their families. That's the part you might have heard about before.
"Caught for going 71 in a 60 mile an hour zone", if she was white this would have been a ticket and a "have a nice night, please keep to the speed limit".
Absolutely excessive force. ACAB and all that. But also this woman is being a menace repeatedly drinking and driving, this attack by the officer wasn’t provoked
I have worked in a field where I routinely needed to restrain people larger than myself without hurting them. These people were unwell, sometimes violent, and often paranoid and aggressive. I never once fucking bodyslammed an adult patient or punched them.
I had to restrain teenagers, many who looked a lot like this girl (who may not have been 100% compliant, but was definitely not "resisting" as I have been resisted by teenage patients). I never once fucking bodyslammed a small teenage girl or punched her. Nor did I fucking bodyslam and punch a 200+lb highschool football player with paranoid delusions and a penchant for punching nurses.
Why not? Because there is absolutely zero need to do that, it's fucked up and mean, it could seriously hurt them, and it's illegal besides. When I was doing this type of work, I was much smaller than the pig in the video, and again restraining teenagers up to 300+lb adults. The lack of a need to do something forceful, and doing the forceful thing anyway despite not needing to is the definition of excessive force. Bodyslamming an unarmed, small, possibly inebriated teenage girl as a 200+lb man is excessive and fucked up.
If you think this is OK, you need to take a step back and ask yourself why you think that.
Because you are flailing around with your arms and not listening because you want to call your mommy. Do you know how fast a person can pull out a blade and fatally stab you? I hate power tripping cops as much as you do, but we have to consider his safety.
Oh shit. That’s a great point I hadn’t considered. He definitely looked like his life was hanging in the balance. Now I see why you were rooting for the underdog here…
Here's the problem... people, black people and minorities in particular, regularly get lied to, tricked, framed, abused, assaulted, beaten, shot, and/or murdered by cops. She's scared for her fucking life. She has zero reason to trust that cop and instinctively wants the protection of her parent.
If you fear for your life do you act rationally? Should "power tripping" cops get a pass for instilling that kind of fear in the population they "protect and serve" and be able to ramp up the violence in response?
And black people literally have fewer rights. The Supreme Court has ruled that in vaguely defined "high crime areas", cops can pretty much ignore much of the bill of rights. Guess what the interesection of "high crime area" and "where black people live" is?
I remember a huge case in maybe the 1980s or 1990s where a black judge ruled that running from police was NOT probable cause because it makes perfect sense for black people to run from police. Total firestorm. People hated it.
Well, now we are at the precipice of living in a fascist state, where justice, having been slowly eroded by custom and practice for decades, can finally be washed away entirely.
When MLK, Jr. said
an inustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
this is exactly what he was fucking talking about.
Adult male wearing body armor, a firearm, a taser, and OC spray with help a radio call away needs protection from the teenage girl he pulled over for speeding.
Policing is more dangerous and lethal to the citizens than it is to the police officers.
You are entitled to your opinion but the rest of us have an obligation to call it out when it’s bullshit.
It would be a shame if someone did some research and found:
"Arellano began placing Hackett under arrest. He said he saw alcohol in the car and learned another trooper had pulled her over days earlier and also found an open container."
"Attorney Benjamin Crump is representing Hackett and calling for a use-of-force investigation. Crump said Hackett was booked at 12:51 a.m. on Aug. 2 in Mississippi County jail on five charges: improper display of tags, a restriction on vehicle lamps, no seat belt, purchase or possession of alcohol by a minor and refusal to submit to arrest."
"On August 1, Trooper Arellano pulled Hackett over on the highway near Manila, reporting she was going 71 in a 60-mile-per-hour zone."
Civil rights lawsuit filed against Arkansas state trooper after traffic stop altercation https://share.google/LUpZOt271jZUBfmnr
Arkansas trooper threw teen down and punched her in the face during traffic stop, lawsuit says https://share.google/801x6PoTEu2bXvgnm
So 100% cop may have been able to do this without a body slam.. but it's not like she rolled a stop sign and got body slammed for it.
...but it's not like she rolled a stop sign and got body slammed for it.
I'm confused, are you saying it's okay because there's multiple alleged charges against her? I don't see how any of that is relevant to her being body slammed and punched in the face?
The defense should get away with the arrest being unlawful given what you said. I don't think anyone here thinks she's perfectly innocent, but if you see the video you already know she's being unlawfully assaulted by a jackass of a police officer.
Even self destructive teens have rights, after all. They're generally victims of an already unjust society.
saw alcohol
previous open container
improper display of tags
a restriction on vehicle lamps
no seat belt
purchase or possession of alcohol by a minor
refusal to submit to arrest
71 in a 60-mile-per-hour zone
So she's pulled over for driving 11 over on a highway... which is kind of normal... and may be in possession of alcohol (not open container, not DUI). He likely tossed every non-moving violation he could think of punitively because she dared to "resist" and didn't show the respect he expected.
Sound like just consequences for driving while black in the USA.
Yeah, why wouldn't she just let the murderous psychopath that's protected by society if he decides to kill her do whatever he wants? /s
The fuck is wrong with y'all? You expect the untrained individual in this circumstance to act with more decorum and reason than the trained one. Be better
You somehow simultaneously believe that a cop did not sign up for a dangerous job and also that not complying with a cop for 1.5 seconds is signing up for potential paralysis or death.
Dude I'd be terrified he's going to fucking rape me in that circumstance - and I'm a man. Did you hear the kind of language he used? Did you even watch the video?
Children/teens who are afraid often do not take instructions well. I work at a children's hospital and can get kids with severe autism and fear of medical providers to behave and comply with treatment by being patient and empathetic.
At no point would scaring them more or hurting them help the situation.

WTF, America?
Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 1d
Cops should be trained to never punch anything ever, that's how boxers and fighters are taught actually first day in the gym --- without proper gloves you should never punch anything, high risk of breaking your own hand.
It's just a complete lack of training, or just counterproductive training, because no trained teacher/coach will ever tell you to punch something without proper gloves fastened and secured.
Senal@programming.dev · 6 pts · 1d
Your takeaway here is that the cops should receive better martial training?
Im genuinely not sure how to address that.
Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works · 0 pts · 13h
The takeaway is their training is completely unacceptable at the most basic fundamental levels. Good luck figuring out how to address that.
Senal@programming.dev · 1 pts · 12h
OK...hmm.. Let's see....
That you saw an adult in a position of power attacking a child and the comment you went with was:
"He shouldn't be punching that teenage girl like that, he'll break his hand"
Is probably indicative of something, probably not something good.
Generic anecdote about boxing training is generic, vague and in my anecdotal experience incorrect.
... That should cover it I think
Huh, That was actually easier than I thought.

I also love how cops can be retroactively omniscient.
Cop: drives up to unarmed black teenager and shoots them dead within 20 seconds.
News: Child was discovered to have not returned a manga to the library 4 years ago.
Public: Totally justified execution.

kandoh@reddthat.com · 23 pts · 1d
The media reporting that "he said he saw alcohol." Not "alcohol was found in the vehicle." Not "was charged for having open alcohol while driving" if which there would need to be physical evidence.
Learned another trooper had found alcohol days earlier. Not "was arrested for having alcohol in the vehicle" of which there would be an actual record.
Are you certain there was any alcohol, or do you think he's making up an excuse for his behavior and the media and his fellow officers are providing him cover?
scbasteve@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 1d
Well yeah hes probably making it up. When has a cop ever told the truth?
Notyou@sopuli.xyz · 6 pts · 1d
Well there was one time I heard about a cop telling the truth. He complained about the abuse and fraud in the LAPD. He filed complaints appropriately and then he got written up, told he needed to improve.
Eventually, he was fired and declared war on the LAPD and their families. That's the part you might have heard about before.

..what more information do you need beyond bodyslamming a skinny 18 year old girl and punching her while shes down?
ALoafOfBread@lemmy.ml · 23 pts · 1d
Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world · 22 pts · 1d

Here's the problem... people, black people and minorities in particular, regularly get lied to, tricked, framed, abused, assaulted, beaten, shot, and/or murdered by cops. She's scared for her fucking life. She has zero reason to trust that cop and instinctively wants the protection of her parent.
If you fear for your life do you act rationally? Should "power tripping" cops get a pass for instilling that kind of fear in the population they "protect and serve" and be able to ramp up the violence in response?
I sincerely hope you are just trolling.
schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works · 37 pts · 1d
When MLK, Jr. said
this is exactly what he was fucking talking about.

Policing is more dangerous and lethal to the citizens than it is to the police officers.

It would be a shame if someone did some research and found:
"Arellano began placing Hackett under arrest. He said he saw alcohol in the car and learned another trooper had pulled her over days earlier and also found an open container." "Attorney Benjamin Crump is representing Hackett and calling for a use-of-force investigation. Crump said Hackett was booked at 12:51 a.m. on Aug. 2 in Mississippi County jail on five charges: improper display of tags, a restriction on vehicle lamps, no seat belt, purchase or possession of alcohol by a minor and refusal to submit to arrest." "On August 1, Trooper Arellano pulled Hackett over on the highway near Manila, reporting she was going 71 in a 60-mile-per-hour zone." Civil rights lawsuit filed against Arkansas state trooper after traffic stop altercation https://share.google/LUpZOt271jZUBfmnr Arkansas trooper threw teen down and punched her in the face during traffic stop, lawsuit says https://share.google/801x6PoTEu2bXvgnm
So 100% cop may have been able to do this without a body slam.. but it's not like she rolled a stop sign and got body slammed for it.
YeahToast@aussie.zone · 51 pts · 1d
I'm confused, are you saying it's okay because there's multiple alleged charges against her? I don't see how any of that is relevant to her being body slammed and punched in the face?
TheTetrapod@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 1d
They pulled her over for 71 in a 60? This is a damn police state.
taiyang@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 1d
The defense should get away with the arrest being unlawful given what you said. I don't think anyone here thinks she's perfectly innocent, but if you see the video you already know she's being unlawfully assaulted by a jackass of a police officer.
Even self destructive teens have rights, after all. They're generally victims of an already unjust society.
theparadox@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 1d
So...

Children/teens who are afraid often do not take instructions well. I work at a children's hospital and can get kids with severe autism and fear of medical providers to behave and comply with treatment by being patient and empathetic.
At no point would scaring them more or hurting them help the situation.
