Please be the republican nominee.

lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.world · 139 pts · 4d (17 replies)

Keep in mind that is exactly what I thought when Trump announced his candidacy in 2015.

resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe · 18 pts · 4d (12 replies)

Hmmm.

You make a good point.

On the other hand, look at the history of presidents and their parties. It ALWAYS swaps parties unless there is a particularly popular vice president. Literally, back to Washington.

The US isn’t like Japan where the LDP wins consecutive elections for decades on end.

The republican candidate was GOING to win in 2016.

We are now in a time of chaos. I feel Dems will probably sweep the midterms and maybe win in 2028, but it’s unclear. We’ve only had one nonconsecutive president before.

I wouldn’t put money on James (Vance).

BonsaiBoo@lemmy.world · 36 pts · 4d (4 replies)

Remember when the Supreme Court interfered in the presidential election because of hanging chads and effectively kept Gore from winning, thus leading somehow to the death of Harambe and bringing us to the bad place dimension where everything always gets worse and almost always in the worst way possible?

Yeah.. like you said, history likes to repeat itself.

resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe · 5 pts · 4d (3 replies)

Oh yes; I remember the Brooks Brothers riot.

Begging the question — was Al Gore a particularly popular vice president?

Having lived through it, I would say no.

Which doesn’t mean Dubya was wildly popular. Only that Al wasn’t.

Whether Dubya won legitimately, the national mood wasn’t four more years of Clinton.

BonsaiBoo@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 3d

Trumps approval rating when he was elected the second time was 47%. Al Gore’s approval rating when he lost the 2000 election was 62%.

grue@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 3d

Should've called it the Brook Brothers coup. Because in retrospect, that's what it was.

rumba@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 2d

Between the two, you had one that constantly made shit up like "I made the internet" and one that couldn't pronounce nuclear.

The fact that it got down to the chads are a better indicator to our split as a country.

At the time climate was a hot topic and we pushed hard to get gore in as best we could.

IIRC the chad was in Florida, which is pretty handicapped red.

Not really though, post civil war there was a 40 year pause where no democrats were president iirc until Wilson won due to Teddy Roosevelt splitting the vote

Yeah because the Dixiecrats were traitors… Then the democrats held a tight grip on congress after the depression and FDR was president for 10+ years.

That's because both sides are shit and just keep the rich and powerful, rich and powerful, in exchange for money.

Oyml77@lemmy.today · 4 pts · 3d (2 replies)

This is the shit that is put out there to keep people from being involved in politics because "why bother if both sides are the same?" and to deflect blame from the fact that the right is objectively worse in every fucking way. The Democratic party has a lot of problems and is in need of of a huge pull to the left, but it is better than the alternative. Dismissing it this way solves nothing.

ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de · 1 pts · 3d (1 reply)

Well we could always keep doing like the past dozen decades and endlessly have the population flopping back and forth between two parties and always pissed and screwed but never doing anything real about it other than "you have to vote guys. Right. Standing up there and yelling "there's that f__ talk again!" as some kind of response, ala Idiocracy would be a huge selling point for the Tribe That Rub Shit In Their Hair. An idiot like donnie or Petey are their idea of "common sense" politicians.

That, combined with enough of the apathetic staying home as well as the armchair "leftists" that love to tell everyone how it is useless to vote, (at least to actually vote for a candidate that can actually win) and you'll get Petey in office...

ruan@lemmy.eco.br · 9 pts · 3d (4 replies)

I'm not from the USA, neither an English native speaker, but is Peter Hegseth in any way charismatic? I find Trump totally repulsive, however I can understand his "charism" that attracts people to vote for him when he's there mumbling his rampts and narcistic histories. So far, since 2025, that I can remember, anytime I saw any video of Peter Hegseth speaking he seems to have the same charism as a door.

This, would, of course, be important for a presidential candidate If there is any "democracy" left during the election time, since Trump's popularity is decreasing, his government does not seem too promising on having "good results" to show when the election time comes, therefore the transfer of charism and therefore votes that Trump would be able to execute would be limited, and the new candidate would have to work on his own.

Given the current state of affairs, as an external observator and not too familiar with USA real politics dynamics, I find it's easier for Trump and republicans to continue the rampamt breaking of laws and just really push for a 3rd term, as he's been publicly "teasing" since his 2024 campaign...

P.S.: Just to finish up, there's also the fact that Trump is old as f*, and seems to be becoming more senile by the minute (i.e.: his almost at the age his dad was diagnoses with dementia iirc), so maybe the thing is they would just be forced to move on from him and the "3rd term" thing would really just not come to fruition due to bad timing (Trump going full demented, dying, etc...). Or maybe if his popularity keeps going down, who knows if the democracts can obtain any majority in the midterm elections and put up an impeachment on both houses this time, this would also chance the outlook of things and force the republicans to choose a new candidate sooner than later.

MBech@feddit.dk · 3 pts · 3d

If I've learned anything these past 10 years, it's never underestimate the idiocy of the average american voter.

Just because MAGA is smaller than previously, doesn't mean the voters who don't like MAGA anymore, don't still prefer republicans.

quick_snail@feddit.nl · 2 pts · 3d

Again, you could only say that if the US was a democracy.

It's a one party system with rampent voter disenfranchisement and first past the post.

Trump has never had more than 40% approval. He didn't win the election. He stole itbin a rigged system.

If the US had a democracy, he never would have been able to steal the Presidency. Because he had never been the candidate of choice.

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 3d

Hegseth isn't Trump. MAGA is a classic Cult of Personality, and it is ALL about Trump. Once he assumes room temperature, MAGA is finished.

Some of his followers, especially the politicians, will try to keep it going, but 90% of street level MAGAs were on board because of Trump, and once he's gone, their interest in politics will wane. None of his henchmen or children will be acceptable, even though there will be many who will claim to be his chosen, or logical, successor, but NONE of them will attract the Trumper.

Besides, MAGA is down to less than 30%. It will be far lower after Trump croaks. Even if they could rally around a MAGA candidate, there won't be the support. And of all the MAGA figures, the guy that helped Trump break his America First promise definitely won't be the guy. Neither will Vance. Rubio has the only shot, because he still has non-MAGA creds, but he will also be tainted with MAGA, so it won't work.

American politics is so fucking whack, but I'm still gonna say he has no chance and if I get egg on my face I get egg on my face.

Big part of how Trump one was playing both sides with the tough guy act but also lying that he'd stay out of foreign entanglements. Hegseth is pure tough guy act, and also started and lost a war with Iran, so he has absolutely no ability to court the libertarian/isolationist-minded people on the right who felt burned by Bush. It seems like he's just delusional and has bought into his own propaganda.

sun_is_ra@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 4d (2 replies)

Right but imagine you are a hardcore MAGA supporter and found that Trump won't be running for a 3ed term, where can you find someone shittier than Pete to elect?

Objection@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 3d (1 reply)

You can't win with just that one type of guy, is what I'm saying. There's the macho nationalist type of guy on the right, absolutely, but there's also the libertarian type that's generally "anti-war" on the basis that war is the government doing stuff and the government doing stuff is always bad.

In 2000, Bush ran as being more isolationist than Gore and staying out of foreign conflicts (after the failure in Vietnam, nobody wanted to be associated with that), then as soon as he got ahold of power started and lost pointless wars of aggression. So then Bush became unpopular on the right and Trump ran as an "anti-establishment" type (after the failure in Afghanistan, nobody wanted to be associated with that) claiming to be a "peace" candidate, and he won, and as soon as he got access to the levers of power he started bombing Syria but nobody really noticed or cared for some reason so then he just repeated the same lies and got into power again and immediately went and bombed Iran, and going forward nobody's gonna want to be associated with that.

There's plenty of figures that are positioning themselves to step into that role next, like MTG, Tucker Carlson, and Tulsi Gabbard. The sorts of people who bought into Trump being a peace candidate are dumb as rocks and lack basic pattern recognition so they will absolutely just keep falling for the same trick over and over again. But they do need to be tricked and lied to for the right to have a winning coalition.

It is kinda exciting on some level, like, say Tucker Carlson got his hands on the levers of power, he'd obviously start another war of aggression somewhere, but who really knows where it'd be? And when that war proves to be a hopeless debacle, who will be the one on the right to say that, unlike Tucker who just loves getting into pointless destructive conflicts (who could've predicted it?), they actually... you know what, I can't do this, it's not exciting, it's literally just rebooting the same plotline over and over, and I'm gonna be forced to watch it until I'm dead in the ground.

Point being, my prediction is that the Republican nominee will either be someone who has some pretense of being able to distance themself from the Iran War, or they will lose.

Hegseth can easily be painted as a weirdo diva little bitch. Talks a lot of shit about manliness but had his very own makeup room installed in the Pentagon, he looks like an uncoordinated wimp when he exercises, he brags about realism and "lethality" but performed like an inept weakling against Iran.

He's also a known wife beater and former alcoholic which makes him look like even more of a pansy. Dude can beat on women but not our enemies.

He's extremely unpopular in the military and isn't taken seriously there either. It took him 20 years to reach major, that's beyond pathetic, and he was never more than a platoon leader.

A competent Dem would portrait him as a loser manlet and it would work.

hoppeduponcoffee@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 3d (1 reply)

libertarian/isolationist-minded

A perfect example of an oxymoron. Core libertarian ideology espouses completely open borders and international trade without government interference.

They’re not libertarians, they’re just another version of big government neoconservatives that sympathize with fascists.

Objection@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 3d

Yes and no. Open borders and international trade are consistent with libertarianism, but fighting a bunch of expensive foreign wars isn't. Libertarians are in a position of having to make compromises for a lesser evil, and no Democratic presidential nominee has ever made an attempt to appeal to them at all. Like, Harris never met a war she didn't like and the way she tried to appeal to the right was campaigning with Dick Cheney, who everyone outside of diehard neocons hates.

Having said that, yes, libertarian-minded people tend to have mixed up priorities and often have major blind spots regarding the GOP. They are blinded by principles and idealism, while ignoring the actual facts on the ground and being horrible judges of character. At the same time, if there is any faction on the right that's actually worth trying to appeal to, it's probably them, because they have some reasons to have tension with the GOP. It's certainly not worth trying to appeal to the bloodthirsty neocons and fascists who are perfectly satisfied and getting exactly what they want.

Anyone who gets too much attention for running for the Republican party after Trump's mandate is going to be pushed aside by him. Trump gives zero fucks about what happens to the party after he's gone and he hates when the spotlight isn't on him.

bedwyr@piefed.ca · 3 pts · 4d

Which means we can help get his cabinet fired if we make a public case that the person is angling for the presidency.

Prez probably doesn't even care if it's true, he cares if people think it's true. Although I don't think he even sees things in a true or false way.

He knows the orange fuhrer is running 2028, right?

I encourage him to split the vote. That will end well.

(For not-Nazis America, that is.)

bedwyr@piefed.ca · 2 pts · 4d (2 replies)

Nah, prez won't run again, his mind is gone, and the county is not corrupted enough to accept such a blatant violation of the constitution.

More than that, he's already lost his mind. He's a fucking vegetable. While that's good for the super rich, it won't play in 2028. No, his bitch ass will step down.

Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 4d (1 reply)

You are absolutely right. Americans would never stand for blatant violations of their constitution.

Apologies I didn't warn you to put down your drink so it wouldn't shoot out your nose.

bedwyr@piefed.ca · 1 pts · 4d

It is not about fidelity to the constitution, it's about the right killing the republic. Maybe you should pick up a drink if you don't even realize that. Cheers motherfucker!

NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 3d (6 replies)

The difference between Trump and Pete the drunk is for all Trumps faults, he is a charismatic speaker (threw up in my mouth a little saying a nice thing about him)

MBech@feddit.dk · 13 pts · 3d (5 replies)

I've never understood why people think that. Most of what comes out of his mouth makes absolutely no sense. If I was to act completely impartial, and forget everything I know about the monster, listening to him wouldn't make me think "What a charismatic guy". He sounds like he's 2 brain cells away from having a stroke.

Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 7 pts · 3d (3 replies)

Yeah I don't understand it at all. Dude has the charisma of a used cars salesman (way too confident and energetic) with the eloquence of a toddler and somehow that makes him a demigod to his base ? (and I do have several examples of people I politically and/or personally despise who actually have charisma)

astronaut_sloth@mander.xyz · 4 pts · 3d (1 reply)

I think you're 100% correct that it's used car salesman energy. His base doesn't understand what he's saying (because he makes no sense), but they can cherry-pick parts they understood and craft positions that they agree with over them. They hear what they want to in an overly confident energetic way. It's why they think he "says it like it is," even though he just vomits words.

slag@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 3d

That’s giving them too much credit. Between Trump and social media, the shitbags successfully normalized (and commoditized) pride in being a shitbag. Once suffrage for women and “the negro” was normalized, there was a certain line that was toed in public. If you crossed that line all your fellow shitbags would distance themselves to avoid the blast radius of press coverage and public outrage. Politicians were notorious for this.

Fast forward to today. Trump is a shitty person in power who can be as shitty as he wants with no consequences. His party runs on grievance politics rooted in long simmering resentment. His very existence unites them because he is crass, uncultured, uneducated, and untouchable. Their role model is nothing but grievances, croneyism, financial fraud, and kid diddling. The first is the only thing that matters. The second and third are hand waved as his right for being successful. The kid diddling is being repeatedly buried in the press cycle because it’s one of the few things that can still unite the country and turn you into a pariah.

nickiwest@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 3d

A lot of the rural Trump voters I know had made being uneducated a key pillar of their personal identity even before 2015. Those are the people who think he's a charismatic speaker.

The urban and suburban ones held their noses and voted for him because "at least he's not a Godless Democrat." They don't listen to what he says, but they vote for him anyway.

NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 3d

Yes, now it's absolute nonsense, but back in 2016 and earlier he was a lot more coherent, and the racists ate it up.

Or at least that's their plan.

nnullzz@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 4d (1 reply)

Or have Trump run as his vice president.

daannii@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 3d

Right. That was one of their "secret" strategies that trump told everyone about.
