It seems the fediverse is continuing and growing again. Line go up is probably good!

https://fediverse.observer/stats&months=50
Total users are huge now.
There are many websites out there that pull data from the fediverse. So take that with a grain of salt. But anecdotally I am seeing a small rise in people using the various platforms as each get more mature and servers somewhat stabilize.

Though the Threadiverse/Lemmy in particular is shrinking - as that same webpage shows when you filter for Lemmy, currently we have 33K monthly active users, down from 35K in recent months, itself further down from 40K in Dec. 2025, having fallen from 65K at the peak during Rexodus.
See also the graph for PieFed, which shows 7K MAUs.
Which I find highly notable, especially given how people are leaving Reddit... and also Lemmy/the Threadiverse as well.
Shadow@lemmy.ca · 35 pts · 2d
Why not just count the two together? At 40k across lemmy + piefed, that's not bad.
OpenStars@discuss.online · 11 pts · 2d
The website does not provide for that, which is why I mentioned both separately.
Note that the numbers then are still shrinking.
I personally have an account on both, which helps illustrate the difficulties of combining the two number pools - these are absolutely not additional people, or rather only some are but nobody knows how much.
Which reminds me, I think the way this website counts numbers, lemm.ee may not be represented at all, even as a decrease in counts from the past? If true, then the actual number of the drop is much larger than shown. But I don't know the details there.
I was avoiding commenting about the goodness or badness of the situation, just focusing on the direction of the change.
Hal@piefed.nz · 7 pts · 1d
Are the numbers actually shrinking for Lemmy+Piefed?
Lemmy has gone from 36,600 monthly active users to 33,600 users in the last year. A loss of 3,000 monthly active users.
Piefed has gone from 1,600 MAU a year ago to 6,900 MAU now, an increase of 5,300 users.
This means the total has increased by 2,300 MAU in the past year.
Note that this drop in Lemmy and rise in Piefed can be explained by lemmynsfw shutting down and being replaced by fedinsfw, which runs piefed and has 3,600 MAU. Arguably both Lemmy and Piefed are slowly gaining in MAU.
OpenStars@discuss.online · 4 pts · 1d
For one thing, Lemmy used to have 65K at its peak, so yes we definitely have dropped since then.
But as for how much or even whether we've dropped within the last year - which the graphs show but as you deservedly are saying that you would like confirmation for - I suspect that the answer is that nobody knows, really.
Like lemm.ee used to be one of the largest instances - so where did that traffic "go"? Moreover, is it still being counted now, e.g. as part of the 65K total, or with the entire instance having shut down, are its counts now removed from both the numerator and denominator?
While that situation was over a year ago now, it does illustrate that I personally at least have no idea how these numbers shown in the graph are being calculated. Nor do I trust them in the slightest - e.g. I know that I personally make up at least 2 of those MAUs, and maybe more depending on the month examined. Lemmy servers used to be significantly less stable than they are now, so whenever one would become almost entirely unresponsive for a few days, many of us active on the Threadiverse at that time would simply hop over to another alt. Plus some of us like to experience features first-hand like what does PieFed offer, in comparison to Lemmy.
On the other hand, I have no other source of numbers, so I discussed what was presented in front of us. 65K down to 33+/-~7K is already a large enough difference that I believe that we have lost many users. Plus we can see them all over the place talking about how displeased they are with their experience while here - over on Reddit, and Bluesky, and I'm not going to look but presumably also X, Facebook, Insta, etc.
Whether these numbers are valid over the last single year or not... I cannot truly say. Although that alone seems quite telling, given how horribly Reddit is treating its user base lately - e.g. beginning to (or is it done for everyone already) shut down old reddit, and blocking people that use a VPN, etc. The fact that many more people are not coming here already should be sufficient for us to make inferences about our popularity, separately from precisely how many people are actively leaving the Threadiverse or not.
For example, read the comments at https://www.reddit.com/r/fossdroid/comments/1uiywal/should_we_switch_to_lemmy/. Copying and pasting a few that I had highlighted previously:
Sadly, these seem representative of how people think of us here. You can see it for yourself too: simply browse most instances from an account without your existing blocks, in order to see what it is like from the eyes of a Redditor. Worse, they are primarily religious (Christian, Muslim, Mormon, whatever) centrists, and not only do they not FEEL welcomed here, but... in truth... they AREN'T ⁉️
Hal@piefed.nz · 8 pts · 1d
I don't think that's a fair comparison. That wasn't natural growth turning into natural decline, that was a giant influx of users that, even at the time, people were expecting only 10-20% of those would stay. It's kind of impressive we are still at half the peak.
I specifically use MAU as the measurement so that we don't have to worry about that. When an instance shuts down like that, you will see the total users drop a lot. But with MAU, after a month you're back with reasonably accurate figures, because users cannot be active on a shut down instance.
Total accounts is pretty useless. Early on after the big reddit influx, most instance had open registrations. You could see the millions upon millions of new accounts being added, but most of those turned out to be spam.
Many people have multiple accounts, but if there is nothing causing people to create more accounts, if the proportion of people with multiple accounts stays the same, then that shouldn't affect the assessment of whether or not the platform is growing.
Whether on not we are only retaining 10% of users doesn't really affect whether we are growing. If more people are joining than leaving, then we still grow. I remember being on Digg all those years ago, and I didn't really "get" reddit until I was forced to. What does it mean when reddit users come and see all these posts about beans? It's an inside joke that would make new users not feel like they belong, but also "getting" it is something that helps retain people.
Like one of those comments says, Lemmy probably will never be reddit. It's nature is that there are fringe groups that would shock people. When I go to Fediverse.observer, it recommends I join Hilarious Chaos because it's hosted near to me, but that would be a huge turnoff for most people.
On the other hand, the flagship instance of Piefed is more centralist, more aggressive with removing detracting users, and piefed in general has better onboarding and more tools with finding and dealing with problematic users. But it also makes it more reddit like, more censorship friendly. I think this means Piefed is likely to grow into a more reddit friendly platform. Currently Lemmy's new users seem to be a lot of people banned from reddit (rightly or wrongly), and I think we need the people not banned from reddit if we want a more welcoming experience.
But I also think we should feel comfortable being our own thing and not trying to grow into a huge reddit monstrosity. Many people like that they don't spend as long on Lemmy as they did on reddit, due to the lack of addictive algorithms and I'll argue, the lack of content to keep you busy 24/7.
I've said this before, I am happy with what appears to be slow natural growth. I don't think we need or should target massive growth. Our shareholders aren't all that interested in growth.
OpenStars@discuss.online · 2 pts · 1d
Fine, sure, let's set aside the 65K then, as an outlier.
But see the stats yourself at https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/stats. Now Lemmy shows 33K, last month it was 35K, a few months before that was 36K, before that 37K, at the turn of last year in Dec. 2025 there were 40K, and so on. This isn't "growth", this is "shrinking".
And since I am certain that there is a way to massage the stats (somehow) to get it to show a pattern of "growth", I will preemptively state that even if we were growing over this period in the past year, it's definitely not very much. So let's just agree that in the absolute very best point of view, Lemmy seems at most stagnant (or even actively shrinking) - even despite all of Reddit's abuses in the last year.
Everyone said to wait until Reddit got rid of old-reddit, and then more people would come here. Well, here we are, and they are not flocking here in droves, it's more like they are trickling in, but at less then the rate of attrition where more people leave than stay (or again, at the absolute very best, break even).
The multiple accounts thing was more about why don't we simply lump together Lemmy + PieFed to get a combined count for the entire Threadiverse at once (Mbin has <1K MAUs). I don't see as much point in making multiple Lemmy alts these days, when the major instances are more stable, but I do think that especially as PieFed continues to add such fantastic new features, that people are more likely to have both a Lemmy and a PieFed account.
So a lot of people making new PieFed accounts could be them migrating from Lemmy to PieFed... or they could simply be trying it out. i.e. like me, having two accounts, neither both on Lemmy nor both on PieFed, but rather one Lemmy and one PieFed. I see this very often especially among the most prolific posters, e.g. someone with a Lemmy.World account testing out or even stably maintaining also a PieFed.World one. Community moderation demands such behavior, though regardless of the reason, it makes cross comparisons between Lemmy and PieFed complicated. And we could get into even deeper scenarios, like someone who greatly prefers Lemmy, but since lemmynsfw.com migrated to fedinwfw.app, now maintains a separate PieFed account as well.
Moreover, I see shrinking rather than growth over the past year, but setting that aside, note that you can also adjust how far back the stats will show for, to see earlier trends. e.g. you can observe how in most of 2024 Lemmy had 45-55K MAUs. So even if we did manage to grow (rather than shrink) by like 1-2K, the background context is that would have occurred after having lost 20K MAUs over the past couple of years. This is entirely independent of the 65K peak, a year before that in July of 2023.
So wherever you consider the "high mark" to be - 65K, 55K, 45K, or even just 40K - we are below that now.
Sure, absolutely - but the "if" there is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Where are you seeing evidence of "growth" here? Even if you point to a specific month where that might be true, relatively speaking in comparison to the month before it, I am saying that in the long run, the overall trend that I see is downwards. Yes with some slight upswings along the way, but inexorably ever downwards. Not for Mastodon obviously, but for the Threadiverse/Lemmy
And perhaps that's okay? Or perhaps we could take the challenge to do better - e.g. find a way to avoid recommending places such as hexbear and hilariouschaos, because otherwise we are a Nazi/tankie/troll bar, indistinguishable from those others who we claim are "not" us, yet we do exceeding little to nothing at all to separate or even distinguish ourselves from such. Lemmy is the "we use Arch (Linux) btw" of the Fediverse - we here know about e.g. hilariouschaos, and take steps to avoid it, but we do next to nothing to help others not be recommended to outright join it over and above all other Threadiverse instances.
I think most of us here would be okay with that, with most likely massive differences in how people define "slow"😉. However, that's just not what I am seeing playing out, as it seems that year by year, we are in decline. Even at the time when bc of what is happening in Reddit you would have rather expected a significant increase.
Maybe something else will happen that will turn this around, but I don't know what. Instead, I think effort is going to be required, e.g. to find a way that hilariouschaos and hexbear do not get recommended to random people looking to escape Reddit, and will likely neither enjoy their time there nor be likely to stick around long enough to figure out how to do better. As you said, we need non-technical normal folks here, if we are to thrive.
Except that we keep turning them away.
Hal@piefed.nz · 3 pts · 1d
You make a lot of good points, and I think I agree with your overarching theme - we don't really know.
Piefed does a lot better job of not recommending the weird instances, and I do hope it overtakes Lemmy because ultimately Lemmy is built by a fringe group so they aren't going to stop recommending fringe groups.
I think that people are unlikely to keep using both Lemmy and Piefed long term. Piefed is new and exciting, in another year we should see people settling into an account and hopefully we'll have a better idea at whether the threadiverse is growing or shrinking.

I really wonder where they're going. I can't find any substitute for this little purgatory. Piefed? I'm not a fan of the UI. Masto? I wonder what it says about social media that a news aggregator started in 2007 whose minimalist interface hasn't changed much since then and which is operated by a venture capital firm to shovel ads for their own investments is literally peak social media for a certain demographic. Like, maybe that's all that's really needed. There should be a news aggregator for people who like cars or for people who like knitting or whatever and they should all look and behave just like Hacker News. A car company just needs to start one of these and do good moderation. Bingo. Social media is solved. Go home. It's over. All the ideas since then? Microblogging? ActivityPub? Subreddits/communities? Apps? It's all unneeded.

Fwiw, a number of highly popular 3rd-party apps including Voyager now offer support for PieFed. Most do not provide the full range of features as compared to the web interface, though some like Interstellar provide the large majority of them - see fully detailed listing of each app and which features are supported at https://piefed.social/community/fediverse/wiki/piefed-app.
Anyway, I confirm first-hand that using Voyager to access a PieFed instance is nearly identical to accessing a Lemmy one, except for the gain in back-end functionality of PieFed doing what Lemmy cannot (e.g. you apply some settings rarely in the web UI - maybe a couple times a year - and then those continue to function as you switch to more daily usage in your app of choice).
So use whatever you like - sh.itjust.works seems to me to be a fine instance - but I'm just saying that for a new person joining the Threadiverse, the web browser UI of PieFed is not the only or even the main way that people can choose to access it.
Gullible@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1d
I used to download an app for everything, but now I can't talk myself into so much as considering it. Unfortunately, it's web interface or nothing for me
OpenStars@discuss.online · 2 pts · 1d
If it's privacy you are worried about, note that several alternatives like Voyager are FOSS.
But otherwise, yeah then that leaves you with the web UI, or at most a pinned webapp, which constrains you to the standard web UI.
Unless the PyLova fork of PieFed begins offering more tweaks to the UI that you want to see. The developer team is actively soliciting suggestions and have implemented a couple of mine already - like adding downvotes next to upvote counts - so you might voice your preferences to them to see if they can address your concerns.

It started out about security before it turned into tool fixation. I prefer to have a robust catch-all for every situation, and web browsers fill that niche incredibly well. 99% of the time, I won't even consider anything besides hopping onto Firefox. The 1% is bullshit banking apps.
And I'm currently super busy, but I will absolutely check out pylova this weekend. If it is to pieced as mbin is to kbin, there's plenty for me to be excited about!
OpenStars@discuss.online · 2 pts · 20h
Pretty much, yeah. Except PieFed still exists whereas Kbin died off, though originally the two existed side-by-side. Rimu has even grabbed code from PyLova before, so I presume they will end up sharing back and forth despite the personal contention.

Its kinda hard to extrapolate either way honestly. Its easy for me to say that 90+% of the traffic to my tiny home server is AI crawlers now. I have NO idea definitively for the others. When I made a python fix, it jailed quite a few IPs and now its not too much of an issue. But I did notice a couple of status servers like fedidb get incorrectly jailed.

Right: people are not so much leaving PieFed as they are leaving the Threadiverse overall, and Lemmy in particular.
Since the amount of growth in PieFed does not offset the decrease in MAUs in Lemmy (especially over the long term, from the 65K), people are still leaving "the Threadiverse" overall, even despite PieFed's recent growth.
I wanted to avoid commenting on the goodness or badness of these trends, but yes PieFed's recent growth is somewhat encouraging, though tiny.

I can understand how you might think your proposal is a solution, but in the US the amount of political content is overwhelming and comes from every direction, especially online.
There is NO such thing as just blocking when it's everywhere, and if you can downvote it you've already read it. I need to not see it at all when I am not in the fact-checking kind of mood for it.
So the most perfect way to avoid the firehose of propaganda is to remove oneself from it altogether. See y'all in November -- or December, if shit gets real.

for every good interaction i have on here, there are probably 10+ other ones, and everyday I have to systemtically block new communities and users that are nothing but bot spam or straight up malicious users who are pushing a delusional and angry political agenda. and it works... those types of accounts/posts get lots of engagement, way more than organic stuff.
and you can go to their comment history and see account is less than a month old, and has 100s of posts and 1000s of comments and they are all... the same thing over and over and over.
a year ago i never had to deal with that on fediverse platforms. i'm now thinking of leaving myself because it just... increasingly sucks here and I don't have an interest in being relentlessly negative and angry like most of content here is. i also don't have a superiority complex being here either.
hamid@crazypeople.online · 4 pts · 1d
The problem is that Lemmy is trying to be Reddit instead of being something better. Reddit's model was always flawed: a central feed of endless content where the community is secondary to the algorithm and the upvote chase. That model rewards outrage, spam, and bot farms because those things generate engagement.
The old forums worked differently. A forum was a place you went to for a specific topic or community. The content and the discussion lived together. You knew the regulars. Moderation was local and accountable. There was no algorithm shoving rage bait into your feed because there was no feed in the modern sense.
Lemmy instances should be built like those old forums. Each instance should feel like a real site with its own culture and purpose, not just a node in a Reddit clone. The posts and the community should be the reason people stay, not a firehose of engagement bait.
Splitting the forums away from the content sites was the mistake. We need to put them back together.
TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 3h
Yeah, agree about old forums. Miss that.
But also it did work well on reddit when it was a small niche community of like 10,000 or less users. the problem is growth destroyed most communities on reddit because you can't sustain a niche community with 100,000+ people, it enevitably becomes slop
Lux18@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d

Fwiw, it gets this way right before every single election in most western nations - especially a USA one.
And you can go to places such as lemmygrad.ml and read how proud they are at creating tools to subvert any and all bans - e.g. the automation of a process to simply cycle through all registered accounts in an app until one is found that is not blocked at the instance, community, or for a comment reply the user level (possibly by now, even including the creation of a new one if necessary?).
NO, to some, means to simply push forward all the harder. It's Man vs. Bear, and they've chosen their side: incel. It is intentional and even purposeful - strategic in fact, a "winning" approach, if the goal is to convey a message regardless of your interest in receiving it.

i think we need better federation with mastodon. at least, mastodon users should be able to see lemmy content and interact with it. (i can understand that the reverse, i.e. seeing mastodon content from lemmy is technically challenging)
that would give more exposure and interaction.
also not federating with mastodon would mean to break the promise of the fediverse, that it's all (somewhat) compatible.
OpenStars@discuss.online · 2 pts · 1d
PieFed is working on that. Seeing the pace of development of Lemmy, I highly doubt that it ever will.
There are quite a number of challenges to overcome though. e.g. if you suddenly had tend to hundreds of people "following" you, how would that make you feel?
On the Threadiverse we tend to prefer to remain anonymous - as a quick glance at usernames can attest - while on the Fediverse the set of expectations are different.

Fwiw this is mainly the most popular subs. The niche subs are much more chill, though still Reddit hence full of bot spam, influencers trying to pretend to offer organic content that was not bought and paid for, and people who overall are just spoiling for a fight (which if we are honest, the latter category used to include most of us here?:-).
Not that I am advocating for Reddit, mind you, just saying that you either have to go to where the content is - Facebook, Insta, Reddit, Xhitter/Bluesky, Tiktok - or else give up on knowing stuff altogether. Which if you are talking about like events in your local town, then at least Reddit seems preferable to the others?
Obligatory fuck spez, I'm just acknowledging that the network effect is real, yo.
Zarobi@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 1d
Yeah agreed. Honestly my main issue with Reddit is the algorithm and "doomscroll" effect. I don't like how I felt after using Reddit and how addicting it was. I found myself feeling anxious, stressed, and tense after using it; it wasn't good for my mental health. I used to use the third party apps because I could control my experience better, but we all know what happened there.
At least here I can add keyword filters and such to Voyager. And my favourite feature of Lemmy is that it ends. I can read all there is to read in the last 24 hours. I don't get a repeating loop of content algorithmically selected to maximise my engagement. I don't see anything outside my bubble by default unless I'm feeling like exploring in "all".
Maybe if the "ability to turn off algorithm" law passes in Australia, I might return for some of the niche communities. But I honestly feel mentally healthier since quitting Reddit. Deleted my 15 year old account, no regrets.
OpenStars@discuss.online · 2 pts · 1d
Same. I noticed that I had become argumentative, even combative, and I got to where I would write out whole responses and then just delete them rather than send, knowing what replies I was almost certain to receive. It's not a place for good faith discussions... at least, not anymore, and that was true even by the time of the Rexodus/APIcalypse.
Any social media - including the Threadiverse - can be addictive. Fortunately there is no real incentive here to do so, and many blocks in place to prevent it actually - like as you noted, limiting scrolling to pages rather than allow infinite.
Extremely unfortunately, niche communities don't exist here and so you have to go to wherever those are. But I find myself lurking with no desire to engage, most of the time even in the form of voting. I like the OC but the system that presents it is distasteful to me, to put it mildly, and I find that extremely off-putting.

this made me laugh, from despair, but laugh nonetheless.
at least in real life I have the foresight to leave the premises when those folks show up to the party.
online I'm too optimistic to think people won't actively misconstrue everything I type into an absurd parody of what I actually said. Only on the internet if I say "i dated a 14 year old when I was 15" am I told that makes me a pedophile and I'm promoting pedophilia, but apparently that's how people think today.
OpenStars@discuss.online · 2 pts · 1d
On the internet we seem to have forgotten: good fences make good neighbors.
When we feel like we are forced into platforming every single batshit insane ideology - like hexbears to name one, though your instance at least had the foresight to defederate from it early on - then we expose people to all the dregs that social media can offer to people.
Like, how can two adults converse with one another, when surrounded by children screaming their heads off - which is not "wrong", but like... can't there even be so much as one room where that level of noise is prevented?
Anyway, I agree that Lemmy's blocking tools are vastly inferior to the task of trying to deal with the situation that you mentioned. The upcoming release of Lemmy 1.0 will help somewhat, by allowing mods to receive remote reports from other instances, but it still would need a LONG way to go - like e.g. implement a true instance blocking capability.
TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 3h
yeah well, that's why the internet was better when it was mostly people of similar dispositions and beliefs.
OpenStars@discuss.online · 2 pts · 2h
I would argue that the Internet with all its glorious diversity (including e.g. both kids and the olds) is far better today, yet still the Intolerance Paradox is real.
When no means "push forward harder" that will simply never be okay. People will find ways to avoid it, e.g. by leaving the Threadiverse entirely, which already offers next to no OC so what then do we offer to someone? A hexbear tankie screaming "death to the Western World", apparently (note the extremist "death to", not the calmer "fall of", let's say capitalism, but violent "death", plus the refusal to limit the target to an economic system and instead leaving open the ambiguity of whether that includes every single person living in a nation that practices it).
I don't blame Redditors for noping right out of that...
And fortunately some progress has been made, just not quite enough if someone can be randomly assigned to go to hilariouschaos or hexbear, rather than sent to an instance that is more in line with the recipient's preferences.
TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1h

You couldn't have certain reddit subreddits here. For example, I follow r/Sverige which is the political right's Sweden channel. And they talk about immigration as a major problem. How open would Lemmy be to discussions like that? It can't even handle different opinions without defederation, downvoting and blocking.
No, i think Lemmy is good for memes and stuff but it can't handle discussions that adults wants to have.
oeuf@slrpnk.net · 24 pts · 2d
I don't think there would be anything stopping them spinning up instances. It would be up to others whether they want to see their posts though.
I'm a leftie but I can handle having a conversation about immigration, as long as it's mature, lucid and respectful.
LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net · 11 pts · 2d
Well then you're in the minority. I do think it's a problem that you can't post what on most other platforms would be viewed as mainstream viewpoints without being threatened by censorship. And I do not agree with these viewpoints but at the same time, if the average person cannot post here without walking on eggshells, the fediverse will never be mainstream.
And I want it to be mainstream because fuck the tech oligarchs.
Quokka@quokk.au · 19 pts · 2d
You can post racist drivel here, it will just be rightfully treated like it is.
What you can’t do on mainstream platforms is post leftist content, which you actually can here. Like Lemmy was pretty much invented because leftists got their comm banned from Reddit. They routinely censor us, like with Meta shutting down countless queer pages and spaces as of late.
SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2d
Reddit is full of left leaning subs.
TheStaffmaster@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d
just because you lean left it doesn't mean you are left. It means your ass is still squarely in the center. Being "Leftist" is to have the tacit understanding that the far right means to eradicate progressive thought by any means necessary, and that any threats of violence from "our" side are spoken from a place of self defence. The right does not want "discussion" to lead to compromise, they want it to lead to compliance. Besides, we've "been having the discussion" since the 1970's and as every hostage negotiator knows: if you keep them talking, they aren't acting. It's a stalling tactic.

The fediverse is not a safe space, excepting a few instances like blahaj.
People can and should make instances for different philosophies but my concern is that any instance that doesn't enforce leftist purity is going to be defederated.
poVoq@slrpnk.net · 13 pts · 2d
People learning what the overton window is and that it can be very much different depending on the place you are in (i.e. instances in the case of the fediverse, but also to a lesser extend the fediverse itself) is a good thing in my view.
LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net · 5 pts · 2d
They're not going to learn about it because most people who join the fediverse end up leaving and they don't recruit anyone else.
The Overton window would be moved by people being exposed to far left ideas and finding them more reasonable than expected. But the community does a very poor job of doing that currently.
OpenStars@discuss.online · 4 pts · 1d
It's far worse than that: after leaving they continue to talk about us, as someone might do for an unfaithful ex, trashing our reputation. We can be toxic AF here, with little to no warning labels about which spaces have what echo chamber policies in place; only people with extraordinarily thick skins can stand this space, especially for long periods of time.
poVoq@slrpnk.net · 2 pts · 2d
I don't quite agree. The people that leave silently (the overwhelimingly large majority) don't leave as an active decision, but rather fail to come back because there isn't enough interest (or nagging notifications).
And for people to realize their overton window is scewed to the right it is sufficient to be exposed to left wing ideas, no need to find them reasonable. The regular existence of these ideas in discourse is sufficient.
TheStaffmaster@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d
people don't stay because reddit exists and that's where the eyeballs are.
oeuf@slrpnk.net · 8 pts · 2d
It's probably worth remembering that censorship and moderation are two sides of the same coin.
And they're not just used to silence viewpoints (like you're saying about the Fediverse) but also an absence of it is exploited to keep people addicted to ragebait and jealousy (mainstream).
I think it's a fundamental problem of social media as a technology tbh, and we'd be mostly better off without it.
TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 2d
the majority of fediverse content is already ragebait and echo chambers. it's been that way for well over a year IME, and it's escalating day by day.
the problem is people who love ragebait and echo chambers don't see them as such, they see them as the one true reality and are incapable of acknowledging other perspectives on the world exist, and anyone who doesn't share in their raging is evil and bad and tacitly supports the evil bad people.
and i won't even go into the victim complex mentalities that dominate most communities here. the second you suggest anyone has agency over their lives... except a hostile and violent reaction or your comments being reported as hate speech.

TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 2d
the problem is people confused moderation with their personal opinions and feelings.
they can't separate the two concepts out, and they act emotionally, and hypocritically.
i cracked a joke once about a popular tourist destination, and got banned from the sub I posted it in... because the mod just visited said destination... basically because I 'hurt their feelings'. and they openly admitted to it when I asked why... and the other mods all agreed it was a perfectly fine reason to temp ban me for a 'bad attitude'.
that was 2019. and things only got more insane/worse in that sub and every other sub. got banned a few times in my local city sub for... supporting the mayor that I liked. reason my comments were removed 'they were sexist/racist' and I was like 'how can supporting a non-white female mayor be sexist and racist?' and banned...
and well, the world has followed suite. nothing makes sense anymore, and everything is twisted and misconstrued by insane people and other insane people believe them and anyone who tries to point out is demonized as 'the enemy'. folks don't even pretend anymore to care about objectivity or truth, and if they are ever referenced they are now no longer ideals to guide us, they are 'oppressive tools of the colonialist patriarchy' for the leftists, or 'destroying traditional values' by the rightoids.

turns out a lot of people get really mad when question what they say and 100% believe them at their word... and even angrier when they can't articulate what they mean with any specificity beyond empty buzzwords.
Lemmy is full of wannabe intellectuals that have no idea what they are talking about and yea, they think it's 'aggressive' when you call them out on their bullshit takes, and supremely angry when you point out how deeply hypocritical they are. and their reply is usually 'go kill yourself'.
Zarobi@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1d
I dunno anything about the specific thread. I'm only highlighting that maybe it's a sign to reflect on how you communicate with others on here, since it's not an isolated incident. It's possible to question people without hurting them or using harsh language.
For what it's worth, I had a really rough time in my entire school life as well. I also tend to ask questions and point out inconsistencies, rather than "going with the flow" or accepting things at face value. I ended up with a 30% attendance rate, for various reasons. The difference here is that most people don't have the authority to retaliate to disobedience, other than using strong words or downvoting me.
Personally, I often run into people on here who want to "argue semantics" rather than the spirit of the argument. They have their dictionary out and are ready to endlessly debate the definitions of every word in a comment, while also refusing to actually read what I wrote properly and misquoting me out of context to look bad. It's not fun or interesting, and language isn't as important as they think it is. I used to get mad at them for arguing in bad faith, but now I just disengage with them or tag or block them if they're really bad.

Nothing is stopping you from making a community and then banning people until it is sufficiently echo-chambered for you. ML or Hexbear might even welcome you.
I personally know several expats living in Sweden. I'm pretty aware of both sides of the discussion. From the outside, it comes off mostly tone-deaf, but with some real points around failing to integrate immigrants. There's also a significant amount of FUD and interference trolling, riling people up.
For people living in Sweden, it's a hotbed of controversy as the places you consider safe are changing around you.
Would anti-immigraition accepted in open arms in lemmy general social forums? Absolutely not.
But if you want your own echo chamber, there are places that would allow it.

About immigration, why can't people dislike immigration by muslims for example? It's happening all over Europe and im actually curious why you and others think it's an opinion people shouldn't have. Is it because you don't care about the culture in your own country?

lambalicious@lemmy.sdf.org · 4 pts · 1d
Careful, your colours are showing.
The kind of immigration countries like Italy face today is exactly the one they asked for: Europe raked Africa and parts of Asia (not to mention the Americas) with colonialism and imperialism for centuries, extracting produces and value for the shareholders while leaving behind famine, plague and war. The least they owe the African and American peoples is to take them in, the same way they took everything else from their lands.
If not that, they should work to restore what they took or destroyed, in terms of not only economy but also society.
Scrollone@feddit.it · 0 pts · 1d
I don't agree with your vision. I agree with the fact that some European countries stole resources from Africa, but Italy in particular didn't rake pretty much anything: Italy didn't have big colonies until Mussolini tried to build his own empire after 1930, without much success anyway; they only made some mess in Libya and in the Horn of Africa, which are not even the places all those immigrants are coming from.
Plus, the real problem is that there's somebody else currently raking Africa: it's China.
Since China is coming out of poverty, they need somebody to take advantage of, and they decided to "colonize" Africa. Not real colonization like Europe did in previous centuries, but a silent control of their economy, slowly buying their politicians and their natural resources extraction companies.
I don't think that the right reparations for what Europe did in the past is welcoming all kinds of immigrants with no control whatsoever.
First, indiscriminate immigration leads to ghettos and poverty, and a lack of integration.
Second, so many immigrants is the perfect way for far right wing parties to win elections, by appealing to the base instincts of people. Even worse now, because Russia is directly financing both far right wing parties and misinformation campaigns in general.

Doesn't matter how open 'the fediverse' is or not to a point of view if the admin of your server are happy to have it, it will exist here. Especially when we're talking raw numbers like this, they should all be piling into the same bucket, if we're measuring fediverse. But as I say this I wonder what the definitions they're using are.
For instance very different views are expressed on Truth Social, which I'm led to believe could connect to the fediverse, but choose not to. So I wonder if those numbers are included, i expect not because they'd not be connected as a fediverse participant by my understanding.
The point is, other people don't have to put up with it in their corners of the fediverse if they don't. This is the freedom of choice benefit that a network like the fediverse has over a centralised platform like fb, reddit, or even BlueSky. This is a fundamental difference in levels of control that makes the fediverse such an exciting project.
Its not necessarily the case that each individual user has full control of these settings, although they mostly do, and if they set up and maintain their own instance they absolutely will. But it is the case that a user has greater control to a point where its practically individualised, and if there were a case where some greater disconnection is warranted the admins aren't some amorphous presence that travel between dimensions unseen, they have a presence in their servers and have a level of accessibility thats unheard of in previous forms of social media. Theres also a community of admins, who can learn and build off each other, which is beneficial in a cooperative-competition kind of way.
Anyway, you probably already knew all this. I ended up finding typing this out was a fun exercise to appreciate for a moment what this network is actually delivering to a couple million people.
TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2d
it's fine to allow users to block what they want, or downvote it, or block other users.
the issue is when admins and mods basically want use their own to systematically remove anything they don't like, and then claim they are the arbiters of truth justice and all that. it's the hypocrisy.
it's also when non-hostile ideas are expressed, and viewed as hostile and violent by the damaged people who are emotionally allergic to anything that isn't already in their comfort zone.
Gorgritch_umie_killa@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2d
You're talking about behaviours, i'm talking about structures. The structure of the fediverse, gives users the option to disengage, find their own spaces.
No one admin has control over this thing, no one mod controls a whole subject. They at best can control a popular community on that subject. They piss people off, people can find another server, another mod very easily. They can even import all their old data with fedibridge, i've bever tried that though.
Take world news as the subject.
The fragmetation of multiple world news communities across multiple servers is good. Think of each of those world news communities and their mods as bringing a certain framing to the subject, their own biases even. Then you can equate them to the world news sections of different newspapers.
In the old days you had The Atlantic, The Tribune, The Sun, The New York Times, etc. Now we have c/worldnews.beehaw, c/worldnews.lemmyworld, c/worldnews.aussiezone, and a plethora of others, with comparatively low barriers to entry than news papers.
Yes the base articles are often the same, but the comment threads are different, and the base articles selected are different. So the articles being the same is not really too different from The Atlantic buying in from a news provider like Reuters.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberalism
Conservatism depends on the context within the nation, but Anglosphere conservatives at a minimum work within a liberal democratic context. Everything listed under ideological liberalism is something "conservatives" used to claim as their values.
Used to. That "conservatives" are openly embracing fascism as their "third way" is reflected in that very Wikipedia article which has been radically changed from it's state even from last year as I recall.
That the article has been changed to claim the "three main ideologies" of the past century as "liberalism, socialism, and conservativism" is some straight up scary revisionist nonsense. Just ask yourself which of those three fascism belongs to and you'll understand why.
Churchill was a Conservative. The Australian Liberal Party are conservatives, etc etc etc.
In other words, there is the ideological definition of liberal, of which conservativism is supposed to be a branch, and there's the casual usage that means "right winger" and that is contextual and rapidly coming to mean fascist.

When I say liberal, I'm referring to the political philosophy of liberalism, which is rooted in individualism and capital, and emerged through the cisheteropatriarchal and white supremacist system of settler-colonialism. People perceive of this as meaning "progressive" or "freedom" because much of the early rhetoric surrounding liberalism (such as the early republican era in the Americas) involved a claim to moral righteousness under the guise of individual freedoms. Liberalism is the philosophy of capitalism as an economic system (which the other commenter here misidentified as liberalism), but it would be distortive to not recognize the specificities of either respectively.
Since liberalism has been the proponent of capitalism and EuroAmerican imperialism for the past couple centuries, it has developed a durability through the appropriation and subsequent assimilation of potentially challenging political movements; such as those based in social justice. Consequently, liberals have effectively coopted the language of equality and progress as natural elements of its politics, despite it consistently disarming and presently continues its genocidal campaign against vulnerable groups.
Conservatism is less a cohesive set of politics than it is the rhetoric of liberals with grievances about the failure of the system to deliver the privilege they feel entitled to, and which this system does assure them. So, a conservative liberal may vaugely subscribe to the notion of "anti-racism" but will inevitably subscribe to racist values that are more consistent with the imperatives of a white supremacist system than they are challenging of it.
Most people in Europe and North America subscribe to liberalism. Most liberals lack a level of political literacy to identify how they subscribe to it, and many mistake themselves as "leftists" or non-liberal "conservatives," even though their values are actually closely aligned. Since I genuinely do not subscribe to liberalism, many liberals on Lemmy self-report when they take issue with some genuine anti-racism, or any anti-bigotry in general when it doesn't align with their comfort level (most of which have been Canadians or Euros who feel free to openly express these views with the confidence that they're "better than Americans").

I really do not get your point of tying liberalism with colonialism. Fact is that colonialism was done by European monarchies which weren't liberal states at the time. The power structures were feudal. They were only beginning to transition into liberal democracies.
orioler25@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 20h
I'm sorry, could you explain how colonialism was confined to, based on what you're saying here, at latest the eighteenth century? Even then, you're saying you don't understand how a political system that emerged in the exact places colonialism benefitted represents a political system that emerged out of colonialism?
majster@lemmy.zip · 0 pts · 8h
Colonialism peaked in 19th century when countries doing it werent liberal democracies. Universal suffrage for men became thing only at the end of century. But widespread demands started in 1848. Before that voting was restricted to income/tax/property.
Not all european liberal democracies had colonies. But it is true that those countries that had them, didn't decolonize after liberalization.
orioler25@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 5h
Oh, lying. Well, that makes the most sense, really.
No, liberalism ("liberal democracy" is a bit of a misnomer) did not emerge at the end of the nineteenth century just because you want to pretend it only counts as liberalism when it includes you. As I said in my original comment, liberalism has always used the rhetoric of freedom and equality while enforcing fundamentally unequal and oppressive systems of power. No, it doesn't start being "real" liberalism when non-property owning men get the right go vote (which, source on thar weirdly specific and inaccurate 1848 date? Go look up Jacksonian Democracy in the 1820s and -30s,, it was something widely demanded from the beginning of the United States). By this merit, there is no such thing as liberalism today, because it isn't an idealized version of itself yet; literally a rationalizing narrative to construct the violence of liberalism not as an inevitability or necessity of this system, but an unfortunate failure of it to live up to the "real" liberal values.
I could tell this was some Euro pro-imperialism narrative before you got to that second section too. This is the kind of historical revisionism they typically deploy to make this brutal system seem coincidental with rather than emergent from the violence they inflicted on the world. No, liberalism does not only need to exist in states that we associate with colonialism (even if it did, it wouldn't be accurate to act like borders stopped material interests in a system of colonialism). Liberalism came from systems that did rely on settler-colonialism for a reason, which is the same reason why the system of knowledge production on race, gender, ability, ethnicity, and humanity that we are forced to engage with happens to construct human life around the imperatives of that system. Could you explain how you're conscious of colonialism while only discussing its system in terms of its most privileged benefactors?
To others who come across this, this user is the exact kind of liberal conservative I'm talking about, and go figure, they're a Euro like I said they'd be.
adjectivenoun@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1d
You can't. He's trying to use liberal as an epithet when he means neoliberal. If we're being pedantic, liberal refers to the full gamut of people who think there should be an open and free society, which usually includes a market and certain property rights. The conservatives use liberal as an epithet to decry the left and now the left is using it to decry the middle.
It would be funny if it wasn't being used to convince naive progressives to sit out elections and let fascists seize power because the center left "only" wants 85% of what they want. You're seeing it really ramp up because the US is closing in on a big election, and convincing dipshits to sit out elections is easier than convincing anyone the right can govern.
Cowbee@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 1d
This isn't really accurate. Liberalism and private property rights are fundamentally tied, that was how it historically emerged. Neoliberalism is a subset of liberalism that emphasized privatizing the welfare states that emerged throughout the 20th century as these states ran into crisis of profitability.
The left has opposed liberalism as soon as socialism began to truly take form, especially around the time of Karl Marx and the first international. Saying that the left and progressive liberals want "85% of the same things" is not true at all, the left wants to fundamentally change the entire base of society into a socialist one, not merely expand the welfare state in capitalism, because the main critique from the left is that capitalism itself is unsustainable and incapable of fulfilling the needs of the working class.
Leftists also support revolution over reformism, and do so year-round, every year. It's not that the left gets louder around election season, it's that those that see voting as their sole means of political action tend to notice the left more around election season. This in turn leads to more conversations around reformism vs. revolution, the nature of the capitalist system, and the role of the DNC and GOP in protecting imperialism and capitalism. The US is run by billionaires, it has never been run by the people, because the base structure of society is one where a tiny number of people own and control the means of production and distribution.
adjectivenoun@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d
This all sounds philosophical. How does this system actually solve problems in a society where scarcity exists? Do people still have property rights? Who enforces those rights? Who makes the decisions on where scarce resources are allocated? Our current system has answers for all of these questions, it's just contaminated by the influence of powerful scumbags. The thing is, the powerful scumbags are going to be scumbags in every system, and at least a decentralized market economy limits the ease with which they can exert control.
Cowbee@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 1d
Philosophy is a core component of Marxism, just like it is of liberalism. Philosophy is essentially the worldview and methodology behind ideologies. Liberalism is generally metaphysical materialism, when science first overturned the feudal idealists. The philosophy of Marxism is dialectical materialism, which advances from metaphysical materialism through developing our understanding of interconnection, development, and processes.
Q: How does this system actually solve problems in a society where scarcity exists?
A: I don't see how scarcity is a problem. Production is already socialized and deeply interconnected, the problem is that distribution is based on individuals owning the means of production and distribution. Collectivizing private industry doesn't mean we suddenly forget how to produce and distribute.
Q: Do people still have property rights?
A: As a matter of course, private property is sublimated into social property gradually. The material base of marketized production is in decentralized, scattered production. The material base of socialized production is in large, centralized industry. Markets naturally move towards the latter, which causes a conflict between the new economic base and the old method of distribution.
Personal property is to be respected and understood as that which people themselves use.
Q: Who enforces those rights?
A: Before production has been collectivized fully, classes will still exist, and thus the state must be under the control of the working class in order to actually enforce this. After all production is collectivized and owned socially, the mechanisms of the state that only existed to protect this status cease to have a purpose, and fade into irrelevance.
Q: Who makes the decisions on where scarce resources are allocated?
A: Administrators, workers that have been selected through democratic processes to make such decisions, both at local and larger scale levels. Think local councils, with delegates to higher councils, and delegates to higher councils. The fewest rungs necessary for effectiveness and the greater the level of participation in all levels, the better, but this depends on the level of development of the material base.
Incorrect. Capitalism necessarily is run by capitalists. There can be no worker control in capitalism, because capitalists already dominate the base of society, the means of production and distribution. The state exists to reinforce the base, not outside of the class struggle. Further, capitalism itself runs into crisis, such as the tendency for the rate of profit to fall over time.
The longer capitalism goes, the more centralized and more disparity rises, the more it risks total collapse. Production increasingly gets socialized, while a smaller and smaller group of people keep the spoils. This is skyrocketing in recent years, but has been steadily and gradually accelerating since the inception of capitalism as a system.
It cannot be fixed by replacing people, because the problems of capitalism are core to how it functions. Billionaires will always control capitalism until capitalism itself collapses. There is no such thing as a "decentralized market economy" any longer. Markets have long surpassed the level at which they play a progressive role in the developed countries. A tiny minority of companies control the vast majority of total production. Free market capitalism died long ago.
We reached the imperialist stage of capitalism in the turn of the 20th century, when bank and industrial capital merged into financial monopoly. These monopolies expand outward, fighting each other over domination of the global south. This was the primary cause of World War I, and it extended into World War II. After World War II, the world began to be dominated by the US, the dollar, its millitary. After a crisis in profitability, Reagonomics unleashed neoliberalism, saving capitalism temporarily by privatizing the safety nets created by FDR and destroying worker organizing. This is now reaching its own crisis, accelerated by the AI bubble.
The capitalist system doesn't weaken the control of scumbags, it entrenches them to the highest possible degree, and ensures that over time it will only get worse as production continues to centralize and wealth concentrates in fewer and fewer hands. The only solution is collectivizing the economy and running it according to a coherent, scientific, collective plan.
adjectivenoun@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 23h
It just seems like this system is capitalism with extra steps, but the extra steps involve replacing the exchange of money with the peddling of influence. The capitalists are replaced by administrators, the hierarchy of wealth is replaced by rank in the decision-making apparatus. I get that it's supposed to be democratic and protect the interests of the public, but so too is our regulated hybrid public-private system and we see how well that's going. It also seems like, where our market system began as distributed and decentralized, which was a strength, and began to be ever more concentrated as businesses consolidated and corrupted government, this new system starts consolidated and married to government. A lot of people would say this is too much power in the hands of the state, and ripe for theft by an autocrat. I'm not saying it's impossible for this to work, but the systems I have seen work best are those where the market does what it does and the government reigns in its worst tendencies when the motive of profit conflicts with the needs of people.
Cowbee@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 23h
The key disconnect is that the state itself is a product of the base of society. Marxists do not posit that we should merely merge with existing government and take it over, but smash the state apparatus and replace it outright. The capitalist systems of today, despite having a public sector, are entirely controlled by capitalists. The socialist states of today and the future, despite having private sectors, are thoroughly controlled by workers. Look at Cuba, and what it's able to achieve despite incredible blockade and sanctions. Look at China, where the underdeveloped parts are marketized and the developed parts are public, they even have a handy chart on what socialist construction looks like:
This is where philosophy comes in. Right now, your analysis is metaphysical. You see that in the past the market was more decentralized, and now that it is highly decentralized, you are trying to work backwards. This isn't how human societies progress, though. This new economic base that capitalism has created is already compatible with planned, social ownership. There is no such thing as a static system that is not evolving into something.
Dialectics helps us understand that capitalism has already played its progressive role, and that now it's time for workers, who already run the world, to take charge of it and own it. Marxism is a more scientific way of viewing the world than liberalism allows for, because metaphysics traps us in outdated forms of science, just like evolution proved older, metaphysical forms of biological categorization to be incorrect.

Liberalism is a conservative ideology. Conservative meaning maintaining the status quo, which liberalism does for economic, foreign, and social policy
Edit: down vote all you want but it is true. The last time liberalism was progressive was when the divine right of kings was law of the land.
Political ideologies can broadly be categorized as reactionary (supports a real or perceived status quo ante), conservative (supports maintenance of status quo), and progressive (supports developing new systems). There are the axes of social views, economic views, etc that we apply these to. The major political parties in the US are centered around variants of liberalism, the ideology of individual rights and private property, which is focused on the status quo of imperialism, discriminatory social hierarchies, and capitalism. There are those who think these systems don't go far enough in their repression, especially but not exclusively within the GOP. They are reactionaries. Progressive ideologies only find any foothold on the very fringes of the DNC, but they are fighting against the policies and institutions of the party itself, not really influencing it fundamentally.

First fediverse site I encountered was moving train radio, a podcast that cited Israeli war crimes in every horrific detail for hours.
It should be played in every church service in North America every week.

bots. bots everywhere.
edit: hey, look at all the repost content! it's almost like there's a bunch of bots swarming the fediverse...

Not me. I just get drunk at work and reply to every string of text that I feel like!
NotEasyBeingGreen@slrpnk.net · 1 pts · 1d
Are there? I don't notice much bottery.
GreenKnight23@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 23h
if not bots then alt accounts.
just had one recently where I would comment, get a response, and immediately get downvotes from the same people over and over again.
I can say some pretty inflammatory shit, but I somehow doubt it's fascinating enough for people to camp my comments.

Is there anyway to compare bots to real users?
mesamunefire@piefed.social · 3 pts · 23h
Piefed auto-flags users it it thinks is bots and allows users to flag other users as potential AI bots. Its an interesting system. I like it so far but its on a system with less than 10k users. So not sure how the scale is going to work. Still its a step!
