Change my mind: Literally zero people want Greenland to be part of the US except Donald Trump and the people who have trained themselves to always agree with Donald Trump.
frongt@lemmy.zip · 59 pts · 212d
The people who have trained Donald Trump to agree with them. They want oil, minerals, land, etc.
WanderingThoughts@europe.pub · 15 pts · 212d
And then not have the capacity to refine the minerals so they have to send the stuff to China for processing
azertyfun@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 212d
Are we already forgetting that trump invaded Venezuela for oil, then the oil companies said "excuse me but we can't profitably exploit their notoriously shitty oil"?
Part of being a literal Nazi is that the o.g. Nazis got themselves stuck in an increasing number of military quagmires not because they had to but because they refused to do consider the obvious peaceful solutions for their problems. The war machine had to be fed even at the cost of their own self-destruction.
Except this time they have a nuclear arsenal capable of wiping all civilization and somehow people aren't freaking out nearly enough about that.

I'm pretty sure a lot of people are instinctively against US acquisition because they've been trained to think colonialism is always bad and what Trump does is always wrong.
demonsword@lemmy.world · 39 pts · 212d
There isn't a single colonial project that was/is benevolent. So yes, colonialism is always bad. Also fuck off with the "acquisition" euphemism. What the USA is proposing is simply stealing somebody else's land.

Unfortunately it’s not a position only MAGA takes. Horse shoe theory is real. There are extreme lefties who hate NATO and EU so much that they rather see the west fall completely apart and fall into chaos, since they think they will come on top when we crawl from underneath the rubble.
Koarnine@pawb.social · 1 pts · 211d
Right but is that 'horse shoe theory' because it just sounds like there are multiple reasons to support things.
Horse shoe theory is nonsense.
I dislike NATO since its a US protection racket and I dislike EU because they're forcing chat control and cowtowing to the US.
I dont want the 'west to fall', I want to be free and sovereign from the US' war machine.
I don't believe we'll naturally rise above if things collapse, but I do believe we'll be dead before too long if the US continues forward with its acts.
Being pincered by Russia on the east and the US on the west is a pretty terrifying concept - if only China would save us.
SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 211d
Yeah we need to change things from within rather than burn it down to the ground and hope for some foreign savior who will probably act in it's own interest. Like the reason why the EU wants to turn itself slowly into a police state is only because the people have been voting for lib-right and Christian democrats for the last 30 years or so. If we had center left and left wing parties in power for that period instead the EU would have looked a lot different today. Change is still possible.

I really want to stress how deeply unpopular this is in the U.S. The MAGA movement is about 30% of the electorate, so you can generally expect that even the dumbest, most insane Trump decisions have a floor of 30% approval. 9% of Americans support this, 86% oppose it. At minimum, two-thirds of Trump's most rabid, loyal followers are against this.
Threeskittiesinatrenchcoat@lemmy.ca · 37 pts · 212d
Something I’ve learned in the last decade, no matter how unpopular a position, MAGA supporters will fall in line with the party rather than risk threatening the parties authority.
pjwestin@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 211d
Maybe. MAGA is fracturing right now. Withholding the Epstien files really was too much for some of them, and Marjorie Taylor Greene's defection gave a lot of them permission to question and criticize him. Invading an ally for no reason might actually break through to good chunk of the average red hats.
btsax@reddthat.com · 2 pts · 210d
False hope. Come election time Republicans will rally around some insane thing like "Democrats are eating babies" and they'll pull the lever for whoever has an R by their name. Even non-crazy people will tell themselves some half-baked story that starts with "Well, I don't like Trump but..." and do the same thing.
pjwestin@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 210d
That's not what the special elections are showing. In last years special elections, Democrats have gained, on average, 14 points in districts that Trump won. Miami elected a Democratic mayor for the first time in 30 years. At the beginning of 2025, people were wondering if Republicans could hold on to the House. In 2026, they're speculating on whether or not Democrats will retake the Senate.
And this is all happening while Democrats have hit historically low approval ratings. Only 18% of voters approve of the job they're doing in Congress, including -6% approval in their own party. And still, voters want Democrats in charge of Congress, 47% to 43%. People hate Democrats more than they have ever hated Democrats in the history of Democrats, and they are still hate Trump more.

pjwestin@lemmy.world · 25 pts · 212d
Well, I hate to throw cold water on that comfort, but I'm not sure the numbers matter. Trump is increasingly unresponsive to polling, even within his base, and it seems like the Pentagon really is planning an invasion. It would fracture his own MAGA movement, completely destroy NATO, make America a global pariah, and potentially start WWIII, but it seems he is seriously considering it.
khannie@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 212d

pjwestin@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 211d
I read an article that claimed some top Generals are trying to distract him with an invasion of Iran (which is also really, really bad). Traditional neocons certainly don't want this, though; they don't want to throw away 80 years of military alliances. Still, if the president tells the Pentagon, "make me a Greenland invasion plan," they're gonna do it.
Mvlad88@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 212d

EvilCartyen@feddit.dk · 12 pts · 212d
This is not a toddler, this is a guy bigger than you and with lots of guns and friends. Talking is our only option, especially because it means we can also go against the narrative that Denmark cannot defend Greenland.
Which is true in isolation, but that's why we're in NATO and the joint arctic command and have the 1951 deal with the US that you guys can scale up military presence in Greenland at will. Yet it hadn't happened in 20 years, only reductions.
Personally I think we should have gone more into how Biden refused to increase the defense of the arctic region within the agreement, give the trumpists a way to call him names and solve the issue within the agreements we have.
Still, Lars Løkke has been doing the rounds on Fox News and elsewhere to give our perspective, which could influence public opinion and help change the false narratives being spread in the US. From our perspective we had everything to gain from a meeting and very little to lose.

Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 14 pts · 211d
They have nothing to lose in doing so.
At worst "conversations" delay an American invasion giving more time for Denmark to prepare.
Any half-competent diplomat will ignore "pride" as a consideration for a chance at stopping a war or at least giving their own side's military more time to prepare, with no actual downside (if that fails they get the exact same outcome as if they didn't engage in "conversations").
Also no doubt a lot of "out of the spotlight" work is going into convicing the members of that Administration who are actually intelligent types putting on a "derranged far-right populist" act for Trump and the American Public, that such a move will indirectly be bad for them personally because of the downsides for the people who own them - big American businesses - of turning Europe into an Enemy rather than merely a trade competitor.

I don't know what kind of authority Greenland / Denmark would have to expel all US personnel from Greenland, but given there are US military bases there, I imagine there might be some contractual issues.
As an alternative, at this point, I think they should be blockading those bases, and searching any vehicle going into or out of it for supply reasons. Also institute a no fly zone over their base so they can't just air drop stuff in.
No net new personnel going into the base (staffing swaps maybe... like 1 in 1 out). No new weapons allowed.
If Trump was going to try something, you don't want them being able to prep those bases to assist with the assult any more than they already can, and you want them locked down with defences in their pathway before anything starts.

Anything less than absolute revolution and the total abolition of capitalism is unacceptable, no more compromises with the capitalists we the workers must take what is ours.
P00ptart@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 211d
And punish those that put us in this predicament.
kittenzrulz123@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 211d
Absolutely, those who have oppressed us and kept us in chains must be punished. All their ill gotten wealth must be confiscated and they must be forced to live the rest of their life on the lowest salary they gave.
P00ptart@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 211d
It's not like we put us in this position. We were put in this position with no choice and our backs to the wall. The fuck else option do we have?
kittenzrulz123@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 211d
None, we declare revolution or we accept that humanity is doomed to kill itself and I personally am not gonna accept extinction. Its that simple, we destroy capitalism or it will destroy us.
P00ptart@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 211d
Agreed. This is the moment.

Anything less than rump kicking it from old age sooner than later is unacceptable but we can’t have everything. Fuck rump and his fascist states.
Schadrach@lemmy.sdf.org · 1 pts · 210d
Wouldn't make a difference. We've got him for a bare minimum of at least another year and six days. Otherwise it would count as a term for Vance. They'll Weekend at Bernie's his bloated corpse for a year if they have to for that.

Not making any political statement on what will or will not happen. Was just funning on the title and saying I hope age take him sooner or later due to being a nasty human being.

Anything less than trump, his entire administration, every pedofile on that list, every ice agent, the entire heritage foundation, every dirty oligarch, every politician who takes money from Israel, trumps criminal children and the corrupt Supreme Court being tried for violations against the constitution and international law is unacceptable
pachrist@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 211d
Trump is willing to resort to force and violence to get the things he wants. I wonder why he was friends with Jeffrey Epstien.

more like "anything less than a distraction from epstein files showing more and my friends of pedophelia and sexual assault is unacceptable"- TRUMP.
Aljernon@lemmy.today · 6 pts · 211d
At this point, the Epstein files are the distraction. Trump is going full Fascist both at home and abroad.

You know what's unacceptable? The fact that it's NOT illegal to say "with a mortar launcher" because it's really an incomplete sentence.

In case you didn't notice, he gains power and confidence when you try to act above the fray and not confront him.
It's a media war, and fighting him and his propaganda in all ways is not a distraction, it's an obligation.
