Hi I’m from the TP lobby, but don’t you want to smear poo around on yourself with a piece of paper that will probably rip anyway and get it all over your hand too? 🥺
Mostly speculation on my part and remembering conversations from decades ago, but at least in the US among men, anything touching your butthole = gay. Using a bidet is something those effeminate Europeans use and not something for manly Americans. These same men think that actually cleaning your butthole in the shower is also gay. Fortunately this mainly seems to be a mindset that older generations hang onto, as I talk to younger folks (Millennial and younger), they seem to be much more open to bidet usage. I have one installed at home and I don't feel clean if I have to do my business somewhere without one.
I put off getting one for a long time just because I didn't see a problem with the way things were going. If only I had realized sooner how much better life could be.
The US really has a French origin, they provided the materiel support it needed to revolt. The statue of liberty was a French gift. How far the US has fallen to forget all of that.
I usually see "poor Mexican food" which is more accurate, but still not fully. We have Mexican, Tex-Mex, Cali-Mex, etc. here. Not a ton, but we get more and more.
Mine was literally the cheapest I could find (Amazon flash sale during COVID for maybe $30?) and isn't even powered, but still manages to have a continuous knob to adjust pressure, along with three buttons for where to aim the spray (butt, front, and self-clean).
Yeah, back when I was properly plumbed we had two. One expensive one with a tank on the side of the toilet for warm water kept the same temperature for as long as, well I gave it to my cool brother before I started dating my wife and she didn't want a bidet don't get me started I think it still works tho, and one cheap one with just pressure control and just cold water, but was great if you ever needed to do a little spring cleaning and that one is in the home office and I just did a little spring cleaning last week. $35 gets you where you need to go
And the knob is counter intuitive to every other water control knob. Wtf is this clockwise is ON bullshit? The number of times I let Blastoise wash my bum...
Wish I could join the club but my wife is resistant. She's grossed out by the concept and wouldn't use the toilet that has it.
She has weird OCD issues like that (butt I still love her with all my heart).
It sucks because I went to Japan earlier this year and my room had one of these, which made me realize that someone hasn't experienced the best life has to offer until they've had their butthole power washed by one of these things.
This is what we have. Might be a good choice in this case especially as it gives much better control of where the water sprays and it's not located in the toilet bowl.
Every time I have to use the washroom outside of our house I am reminded that most of these people are out there raw-dogging life with a dirty butthole for most of their lives.
It really helps to bring everyone down to the same level. And that level is directly below anyone with a bidet!
I’m jealous they even have an outlet.. but realistically the other outlet in the bathroom is GFCI and that one is wired to it so they’re all protected.
Is that really what you call a bidet? Because our bidets here are unrelated to the toilet and that's a Japanese toilet. The bidet is the one for washing https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bidet.
I know bidets and Japanese toilets but the image shown is the latter and not a bidet that's why I'm curious if that definition is a US thing or something, I like learning.
It's a washlet bidet, which attaches either underneath the toilet seat or as part of the toilet seat itself, and usually has controls that jut out to the right of the seat(to the right from the perspective of the seated person).
The toilet in this picture has a washlet bidet installed.
This is separate from the kind of bidets that are installed separately from the toilet, as is common in many other countries.
In the U.S., no. Federal code only requires GFCI in certain areas like kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry rooms, basement, etc. State and local governments can amend the federal code if they want; a common amendment is to make GFCI only required in unfinished areas of basements instead of the entire basement. Some places may even have more strict codes than the federal code. There are also some electricians that voluntarily only install GFCI breakers (my brother's company does this), but it's not required.
Europe, we call it RCCB and it's in the electrical distribution board on all circuits. GFCI isn't only useful in wet conditions, it protects you everywhere where there is the possibility of a circuit between a live wire and the ground with you in the middle.
Although it's an absolute pain in the arse in certain scenarios. Surge protectors essentially present as a leak to earth any time they do their job, so my mandatory RCCBs on every circuit turn minor mains fluctuations into permanent outages.
I really need to see if I can legally run one circuit that isn't RCD protected for my homelab...
I don't know all the details. Are you sure you're literally not allowed to place anything before the RCD? Technically SPD then RCD makes the most sense to me, so it seems strange to me that it wouldn't be allowed, but I couldn't find any clear answer.
I'm trying to figure out what one I can donate to scout camp. I didn't miss anything else from home, and even wished there wasn't AC in the adult meeting room. But the bidet was dearly missed a few times. Anyone know of an affordable bidet that will stand up to teenage boys?
Probably the external, steel sprayer type. It’s not as glamorous but I feel like anything built into a toilet seat is going to get abused beyond its design, and probably piss all over the hard-to-clean areas.
I see those fairly often at daycares and kid facilities.
Brondel sells one that's a seat, so you remove the old seat and attach this. Comes with a splitter for your incoming tank water line. So obviously it's not technical, but it works great. I use it at home. I have tile walls in my bathroom and didn't feel like running power and busting tiles out, and it is more than serviceable, and inexpensive. We have great water pressure in my house and the thing feels like it could strip paint off a starfish.
Maybe we've solved the issue right here. I'm not sure I'd trust boys with bidets period. The ceiling will be wet, undoubtedly. They will spray each other with it.
Depends on the model. Some only hook into the cold water line, where others can hook into both. A cold jet of water on your butt is a hell of a way to wake up in the morning.
As long as you have a sink with hot water in your bathroom, it's not hard to attach a splitter to the hot water line under the sink and run a little hose along the baseboards. That's what I did, anyway
As a bidet owner myself, there are models that have heated water options.
I only have experience with Toto Bidet's, but all of theirs I've tried have multiple heat settings for the water, seat, and dryer.
Not all heated Bidet's are created equal though. Depending on the model, they have a small reservoir of water they heat up, or use a tankless design. Both have pro's and con's.
Tank designs have a small amount of water preheated so it's ready to go. But it is possible to drain it faster than it replenishes and you'll eventually get cold water.
Tankless designs don't run out of hot, but the first half second of the spray always seems to be cold as it's just past the heating element.
There are tankless models now that never run out of hot. Only downside is the first half second always seems to be cold as it's just past the heating element.
I was concerned about this as well when looking to install a bidet solution, to the point where I put it off for years.
For context, I live in Sweden where the water in the cold line gets quite cold during winter.
I then read that you don't really have that much temperature-related sensation in the place where it matters for the bidet, and finally decided to test the theory and bought a cheap model (~€75) that just attaches to the water inlet for the toilet, i.e cold water.
I can confirm that it is indeed the case that you can't really tell that it's cold water being applied. You're just not that sensitive to it in that place.
I have not looked back at all since I bought the thing. Two squares of toilet paper is basically always enough to get me incredibly clean with the help of the bidet. It's fantastic. I highly recommend you get one.
Some context - I live in Canada on a deep well. My pumphouse is just above freezing most of the winter and the bidet line comes directly off that feed about 10 feet later.
The cold cold cold bidet water is something I miss all summer when the water pumphous eis warm and the water is only kind of cold.
I have mine on a smart plug to monitor it (Emporia). It uses about 3 kilowatts per week. For reference the whole house uses about 100 kwh per week. The cost to operate is similar to my dishwasher.... bidet gets more uses but much shorter durations. The heating element must be really small because that's not much power. It might vary between manufacturers tho.
How much does it draw under load? I ask because I've always wanted one of these, but I'm on solar and batteries so I have to monitor load and usage a bit more closely than most.
It spikes up to 300-400 watts while in use, sometimes a little more if playing around with the actuators at the same time. The model I have is Alpha UX Pearl for reference.
see, that's the thing - if it's first thing, your cold water pipes will be room temp because they've been sitting there all night.
obvs dependent on usage throughout the night and who else uses it in the morning, but at least in my house, it takes some time for me to get actually cold water upstairs in the morning
I tried one with a dryer but I didn't like it. It just ended up circulating poop air and didn't do a good job drying. Maybe other models do it better but a few squares of toilet paper do the job for me.
Vietnam has a good way of doing it. You just tee in one of those kitchen sink sprayer heads to the water supply. You could even tee it off from the bathroom sink warm water.
Looks like the spray heads are $11-15, plus a hose and a tee fitting.
Same goes for Thailand, definitely a good cheap option if you got the angle right. Messy otherwise. Always do a pressure check into the bowl if it's a public toilet...
Bingo.
Try to add an electrical outlet in the toilet or bathroom in the UK and you'll get a visit from the prime minister themself to kick you in the taint.
Christ I see you went all in there... I bought a $30 one. Decided if I need to, I'll upgrade. Never felt the need to upgrade. I just replaced it after like 5 years because it stopped working as well but just bought another cheap one. I see no need to have 8 settings to blow water on your asshole and or clam.
Nah, I just deal with getting a blast of cold fucking water numbing me right up! But yeah, it'd be nice to have one with at least a warm water feature. I could get one but it would just look so weird the way I'd have to tap into my hot water line from the bathroom sink I never found it worth it. Yeah, I could totally run a 4 foot flexible pipe along the wall even turning a corner and then finding a way to conceal it but if I did that, I'd have to add it to the list of other extra ass shit I'd be doing on a rental that I won't be in for long m
Yeah I looked into these but the electrical outlet is also on the other side of the room next to the sink. I have 1 (so 2 outlets). I just wanted the most non-intrusive way to have a clean butt and the cold one was the option. That being said, I'll never go back! I just feel dirty when I don't use it.
I don't even have a butthole anymore and sometimes I want to use one (hot of course, I ain't a masochist. Okay I ain't that kind of masochist I do ride a bike) just for old times sake
I was at a friend's house and he has a bidet. Seat warmer automatic lid actuator, and everything. It was nasty, though, so I started wondering if the bidet actually makes sure to not blast the remains of whomever's last night's taco bell diarrhea straight into my small intestines or if we're poop buddies now by means of involuntary stool transplant.
my biddet is just the bare minimum, no heating or anything. it’s powered by the water pressure, and the dial has to pass a self cleaning segment both to turn on and to turn off.
I mean, stool transplants are good for you (they treat the shit before they give you a pill of shit anyways it's not like bidet shit spatters) I'd kindly tell your buddy his bidet is gross. He'd probably want to keep it clean. Like, if there's something keeping him from cleaning it, he might be sick or something. Need a hand.
It is one of those luxury features that sound good, but a couple squares of paper to dry (not wipe, just dry) is a lot faster and works better so you probably won't wait for the dry.
Mine like the one pictured would be uninstallable on demand , but a massive pain in the ass. I'd probably install it and see if they bring it up. Sort of depends on the landlord and how desperate you are to stay there. IMO knowing nothing of your situation its worth it.
Be warned all other non bidet bathrooms will now be unpleasant.
We have one upstairs but I'm mostly down here in the shop. Why not just smear it all around and pretend it's clean they say. They have never experienced cleanliness only possible by washing your bum on a rapid stream of water amongst the salmon.
I'm proud of you. I'll see to it that my downstairs restroom get one. Probably not a super fancy one.

ladicius@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 15d
Garden Hose should do the job.
i_stole_ur_taco@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 15d
Probably the external, steel sprayer type. It’s not as glamorous but I feel like anything built into a toilet seat is going to get abused beyond its design, and probably piss all over the hard-to-clean areas.
I see those fairly often at daycares and kid facilities.
bluGill@fedia.io · 2 pts · 15d
These are boys, they will use it for water fights if possible.
Dozzi92@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 15d
Brondel sells one that's a seat, so you remove the old seat and attach this. Comes with a splitter for your incoming tank water line. So obviously it's not technical, but it works great. I use it at home. I have tile walls in my bathroom and didn't feel like running power and busting tiles out, and it is more than serviceable, and inexpensive. We have great water pressure in my house and the thing feels like it could strip paint off a starfish.
bluGill@fedia.io · 2 pts · 15d
There are a lot of models like that, but all the ones I've seen I wouldn't trust in a camp with 300 teenage boys who have free-time.
Dozzi92@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 15d
Maybe we've solved the issue right here. I'm not sure I'd trust boys with bidets period. The ceiling will be wet, undoubtedly. They will spray each other with it.
NullPointerException@lemmy.ca · 7 pts · 15d
I have a question. Does it heat up the water? The first jet that hits you is already warm? Water can be pretty cold around here.
bluGill@fedia.io · 15 pts · 15d
I have had them both ways. I can't tell the difference. Cold water sounds awful but in my experience you can't tell.
FenrirIII@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 15d
This one can heat the water.
plaztek@piefed.ca · 6 pts · 15d
Depends on the model. Some only hook into the cold water line, where others can hook into both. A cold jet of water on your butt is a hell of a way to wake up in the morning.
NullPointerException@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 15d
Yeah, I don’t have a hot water line close to the toilet. I need the bidet to heat it.
MnemonicBump@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 15d
As long as you have a sink with hot water in your bathroom, it's not hard to attach a splitter to the hot water line under the sink and run a little hose along the baseboards. That's what I did, anyway
Pirky@piefed.world · 2 pts · 15d
Hopefully you find this info useful.
MJKee9@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 15d
Mine does.... But it runs out after around 30 secs of use.
Pirky@piefed.world · 2 pts · 15d
There are tankless models now that never run out of hot. Only downside is the first half second always seems to be cold as it's just past the heating element.
VibeSurgeon@piefed.social · 3 pts · 15d
Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 15d
Mine doesn't have hot water. The water typically heats up in the hose, so the first blast is closer to room temperature.
It doesn't bother anyone in my house, but we don't know what we're missing with warm water.
Bo7a@piefed.ca · 1 pts · 15d
Some context - I live in Canada on a deep well. My pumphouse is just above freezing most of the winter and the bidet line comes directly off that feed about 10 feet later.
The cold cold cold bidet water is something I miss all summer when the water pumphous eis warm and the water is only kind of cold.
cold water back there is... magical.

But (pun intended) I hope to put in service soon.
WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 15d
i`ve never used the kind that hook to the seat but i do love my separate fixture one. It kind of makes me hate vacation to have to use toilet paper.
Dozzi92@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 15d
I put one out at my mom's place down the shore, which is essentially the extent of our vacations these days.
Big_Boss_77@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 15d
I'd be curious to hear if this impacts your energy usage in any appreciable way.
Ydna@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 14d
I have mine on a smart plug to monitor it (Emporia). It uses about 3 kilowatts per week. For reference the whole house uses about 100 kwh per week. The cost to operate is similar to my dishwasher.... bidet gets more uses but much shorter durations. The heating element must be really small because that's not much power. It might vary between manufacturers tho.
Big_Boss_77@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 14d
How much does it draw under load? I ask because I've always wanted one of these, but I'm on solar and batteries so I have to monitor load and usage a bit more closely than most.
Ydna@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 12d
It spikes up to 300-400 watts while in use, sometimes a little more if playing around with the actuators at the same time. The model I have is Alpha UX Pearl for reference.
dermanus@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 14d
You don't have to get an electric one either, lots just work off of existing water pressure. The heating is a nice but optional feature IMO
Big_Boss_77@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 14d
Oh yeah... not sure I'd handle a blast of cold water first thing in the morning very well though
jmill@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 14d
I got one that has a hot and cold water hookup, so no electrical connection needed.
mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 14d
see, that's the thing - if it's first thing, your cold water pipes will be room temp because they've been sitting there all night.
obvs dependent on usage throughout the night and who else uses it in the morning, but at least in my house, it takes some time for me to get actually cold water upstairs in the morning
XeroxCool@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 14d
The fear and shock of unholy caress is better than caffeine in the morning. Seriously though, you get used to it.
whyNotSquirrel@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 15d
Appart of the heating options I doubt it's noticeable
And why would one want a warm seat??!
edit: forgot about the dryer, I don't know how it works actually, I have a really basic one without electricity
dermanus@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 14d
I tried one with a dryer but I didn't like it. It just ended up circulating poop air and didn't do a good job drying. Maybe other models do it better but a few squares of toilet paper do the job for me.
Poem_for_your_sprog@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 14d
Japanese buildings often run the heat at low levels in the winter.
You ever sit on a really cold toilet seat?
betanumerus@lemmy.ca · 6 pts · 14d
For those who hesitate making the investment, portable squirt bottles for this purpose are available for less than $25.
Poem_for_your_sprog@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 14d
Vietnam has a good way of doing it. You just tee in one of those kitchen sink sprayer heads to the water supply. You could even tee it off from the bathroom sink warm water.
Looks like the spray heads are $11-15, plus a hose and a tee fitting.

BeUnique@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 15d
Nah, I just deal with getting a blast of cold fucking water numbing me right up! But yeah, it'd be nice to have one with at least a warm water feature. I could get one but it would just look so weird the way I'd have to tap into my hot water line from the bathroom sink I never found it worth it. Yeah, I could totally run a 4 foot flexible pipe along the wall even turning a corner and then finding a way to conceal it but if I did that, I'd have to add it to the list of other extra ass shit I'd be doing on a rental that I won't be in for long m
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 14d
They have electric heaters in the toilet seat for your butt water. Don't ask me how they make it safe, I'm a buttologist by birth, not by trade
I mean I've never made a bidet. Okay I've made a bidet but it was out of parts of older, broken bidets that doesn't count
BeUnique@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 14d
Yeah I looked into these but the electrical outlet is also on the other side of the room next to the sink. I have 1 (so 2 outlets). I just wanted the most non-intrusive way to have a clean butt and the cold one was the option. That being said, I'll never go back! I just feel dirty when I don't use it.
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 14d

I was at a friend's house and he has a bidet. Seat warmer automatic lid actuator, and everything. It was nasty, though, so I started wondering if the bidet actually makes sure to not blast the remains of whomever's last night's taco bell diarrhea straight into my small intestines or if we're poop buddies now by means of involuntary stool transplant.
zourn@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 15d
A bidet that fancy almost certainly has a nozzle purge sequence prior to commencing the blasting.
WraithGear@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 15d
my biddet is just the bare minimum, no heating or anything. it’s powered by the water pressure, and the dial has to pass a self cleaning segment both to turn on and to turn off.
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 15d
I mean, stool transplants are good for you (they treat the shit before they give you a pill of shit anyways it's not like bidet shit spatters) I'd kindly tell your buddy his bidet is gross. He'd probably want to keep it clean. Like, if there's something keeping him from cleaning it, he might be sick or something. Need a hand.
