You know, the same deal kind of applies about "losing newcomers". Because I avooded using AWS because everything seemed cryptic and weird with its terminology. So other companies got my business.
That's mostly because it doesn't have real directories, it just simulates them with string prefixes and if you forget that on large buckets you are going to have a bad time.
Imagine you have dir1/dir2 with "directories" inside, each one with millions of "files"/objects. When you try to "ls" the dir1/dir2 by querying Prefix='dir1/dir2/' and Delimiter='/' S3 will still scan all the millions of objects starting with the prefix, and then filter out the ones that have a / after the prefix.
There's no benefit or drawback on it's own. The way the keys and queries work are geared to S3's nature as a key value object store - which requires it to support keys that wouldn't be valid file paths or that have different delimiters.
There is a reason for that since S3 is not block storage and doesn't have a Hierarchal filesystem. That's why when you create folder in the S3 console what you are really creating is a prefix meaning its just a placeholder to auto add the prefix string to the beginning of all objects. But all objects in the bucket are flat when it comes to the API. Plus the way the files are stored in the shards in S3. You can limit Throughput by treating prefixes like a hierarchical filesystem too much.
The more confusing thing I've had to explain to too many developers is that it's not a directory regardless of what it looks like on the AWS website view. It's a "prefix" meaning the entire thing, including the slashes, is just part of the filename, there is no real structure inside a bucket. So there's no such thing as relative paths to search for things. When you call the list objects function with a prefix it's the same as doing a "starts with" on a string. You can't give it a partial "path" relative to another object that appears to be in another "folder".

Honestly, yeah. The filesystem's address table is more analogous to a 'directory'. You don't really put things in a directory -- a directory tells you where to find things that are located outside of it.
Just call it a 'container object' and you can be technically correct in almost every context.
See also: in SQL and Dataverse, a row is called a 'record', but in SharePoint and Lists, a row is called an 'item', and MAN do people get all pissy if you get them mixed up or refer to it as a 'row'.
It's even more aggravating when you understand that 1) they're all different implementations of the 'table' data structure, so the term is still accurate; 'records' and 'items' are just subsets of 'rows', and 2) SharePoint and Lists are just SQL on the backend anyway.

And I'm going to pushback against that. In this case, it was a single line snarky comment that referenced the meme in question. In response, I got 5 or so responses from people, each of them multi paragraph long, insisting on telling me just how it's actually ok to post Rowling stuff.
And from my perspective, if you're ok enough with Rowling to not say anything when a Rowling meme is posted, you should also be ok enough with someone posting a snarky one liner in pushback against it.
But if folk are ok with a meme that entrenches the relevance of a virulent transphobe, but a snarky response to that meme warrants a multi paragraph response, then it might be time to re-evaluate priorities...

This is absolutely a trans-inclusive community, it just isn't spelled out (e: it is now) because inclusion should be natural. I don't like making assumptions about a person's identity or beliefs (unless they scream it to the heavens, at which point it isn't an assumption anymore), and I can't determine whether a person is welcome here based on what they are. When a person's behaviour becomes problematic, that is when I step in. In particular, if someone reports a homophobic, transphobic, or racist comment, you won't see me argue with them: those comments get immediately deleted and the user permanently banned. Fortunately, nearly all community members I've seen are friendly, or at least polite, with LGBTQ+ folk.
Regarding the meme in question. There is an argument to be made that just using the media as a meme, even of an unrelated topic, gives the author unwanted exposure. I don't think this applies in this community, or most of the fediverse (excepting places like Grad or Hexbear). We all know that JK is morally inferior to what came out of my dog this morning. Seeing this meme won't change that position, nor does it try to glorify her morals or justify her views. It is the essential meme: a well-known scene from popular culture, removed from its environment, to express an idea or sentiment that is common within this demographic.

Sorry Ada -- I was referring to myself! I originally lived on blåhaj but was banned for promoting violence against bigots and generally making hate-fuelled comments. It was not okay to be so extreme.
