The late night host announced that his interview with the Texas Senate candidate will only air on YouTube
Jimmy Kimmel says that his interview with Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico will not air on TV after President Donald Trump’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC) threatened Jimmy Kimmel Live!, ABC, their affiliates, and local stations.
During his Wednesday monologue, Kimmel said that while Talarico would stop by the show for an interview on Thursday, viewers at home won’t be able to watch it on broadcast television. Instead, the interview with the Democratic nominee has been relegated to YouTube.
“Tomorrow night, I’ll be interviewing James Talarico — tomorrow night, under unusual circumstances,” Kimmel began. “You know, for a lot of years, for the whole 20-plus years of our show, in fact, I’ve been interviewing Americans who are running for office with no problem at all, just like Letterman did, Leno did, Arsenio, et cetera, et cetera. I’ve interviewed a lot of political candidates from Hillary Clinton to Ted Cruz to Donald Trump himself.”

listen, if they can highlight the parts of the bible they like (stoning gays, women's servitude to men, slavery, many others, take your pick) and yank out the parts they don't (95% of the rest of the book) for the purpose of dividing this country into bullshit culture wars; then so can any reasonably well-versed and so-inclined preacher do the same with the verses that tell you to love your neighbor, not to fuck around on your partner, or those about Jesus visiting the temple and chasing the money-changers and merchants out with a whip. All it takes is someone that can quote their own book back at them that isn't also a giant piece of shit, and Talarico nominally seems to believe in the nicer parts of the Bible and not the batshit insane ones.
I can't read the man's mind, he might be a more sociopathic duplicitous piece of shit than Fetterman turned out to be -- but I'd certainly be surprised if that turned out to be the case, at least Fetterman gave off signs. I'm sure we can at least agree, that assuming he is what he seems to be, it would be better to have the aforementioned MAGA morons following Talarico -- and by extension, the nicer parts of the bible -- rather than hanging on President Shits-His-Pants every word, no?

I absolutely agree that Talrico or people using their dumb book against the magat brainwashing, is what we need right now. I am not speaking against that at all.
I was simply musing that it's not deprogramming. It's reprogramming or redirecting maybe.
Look, it's simply not possible to unhook these people from fascism. The best we can hope for is to bind them to a version of it that helps the community rather than hurts it. I think "good guy jesus" is the best we can do, and I am behind Talrico style reprogramming 100%.
I just also think it's important to acknowledge that the reason these people are so ripe for fascist picking is not because trump did anything much, he simply slightly diverted the programming that the church and their parents and the schools put in them as kids. If we ever want to even have a chance at minimizing future hitlers and trumps, we have to stop this before it starts.

Literally what happened with the same politician being interviewed by Colbert during his primary. FCC told them they couldn't air the interview, they posted it on YouTube, Streisand Effect happens and it's one of the most viewed Colbert videos ever. It won him that election. I think Jasmine Crockett was a better candidate and she may have stood a chance had she gotten that level of exposure.

Idk about that. Talarico had a stronger ground game and a prodigious fundraising haul. He won with a healthy 6-pt margin over Crockett.
Incidentally, CBS gave plenty of coverage and multiple interviews to Crockett during her primary run. And Crockett was even interviewed - multiple times, including on CBS - specifically over the Colbert show controversy. The idea that she just wasn't getting enough press to win in Texas seems sparse.
I think the biggest baggage Crockett had to carry was Colin Alred's. He flubbed it in 2022. So Texas voters decided to try and run another Beto-style West Texas cracker, instead of a second Dallas social media suburbanite.

Sounds like you've got better insight into Texas politics than I do. From my outside perspective, this is what put Talarico into the national spotlight. I was previously unfamiliar with him, but had seen her fighting the good fight against GOP stupidity and ICE specifically.

Sure. Nationally it was big for his brand. But all the local media was on this race months beforehand. Texas Tribune, Houston Chronicle, all the local stations. Ken Paxton running against John Cornyn showed an enormous fissure in the Texas Republican Party when it was already sporting wounds in Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio. Everyone who follows Texas politics was locked in on the Texas Senate race going back to 2025.
Also, plus, too, Abbott running for a third term as Governor was kinda assumed to be a shoe-in. And Texas is a big media market. So Senate is where the coverage naturally went.
I mean, Crockett was certainly good at getting in front of a camera. But she was heavily keyed in on African American civil rights and not terribly popular with Latinos. Without Talarico in the race, she could have probably clinched it. But he's scratching all the itches that your classic Central Texas indie voter loves.
I think Talarico caught people off guard because he codes as a classic Conservative Republican in appearance and demeanor. But that's just what Anne Richards / LBJ loving Texas Democrats all look like.

It can be everything - Kimmel's people could know that Trump would threaten ABC to not air the interview, allowing them to get more views. Talarico's team might know that the interview would get canned, giving them more publicity. Trump's people may be actually trying to suppress Talarico's team from getting the publicity and totally plan to pull the license. ABC might be aware of all of this and planned to kotow from the beginning.

In casual conversation, when referring to an artist, an actor, comedian, etc., when someone says “I don’t like X“, it typically refers to their performance/art, not to them personally.
For example, I never really liked Monet. I certainly never knew the guy, so I can’t comment on him personally, so what I really mean is that I never really liked his art.
Yes, it’s vague and deserves clarification, but there it is. English is a messy language.

I normally agree and mostly still do, but I do feel with as polarized as the population has become, it's not as clear as it used to be.
Your Monet example I spot on for it. If I heard someone just say they didn't like them, I honestly wouldn't know if they meant the act or the person because of what they do. I personally don't enjoy the product because it's so over the top, but I have no problems with the people or those that do like it.

Now what you’re commenting on is the inherent laziness of people nowadays, and how they don’t really bother to express themselves very clearly anymore. it’s a very real problem that leads to a lot of miscommunications, especially online when vocal tone is absent from interpersonal interactions.
I blame our failing education system for that, alongside the forced brevity of online communications.

I agree. It's both the people and the system. There are people that will hate someone because they do drag ignoring everything else about that person. That's certainly a learned behaviour from education and other environmental factors like family. It definitely doesn't help that the US fucked up government is passing legislation to block teaching of different walks of life, so it's not likely going to get better before it gets worse. Hopefully more adults that aren't as corrupt will instill better views in their children outside of the fucked curriculums.

The Equal Time Rule would require Kimmel to offer to air an equal-time interview to Ken Paxton as well as Talarico. Unless Kimmel's program is a bona fide news program, which would be exempt from the rule.
Previous administrations adopted a more broad interpretation of "bona fide news program" that included these late night shows that interview guests. Mainly because this rule and the exception are playing with legal fire regarding the first amendment and core political speech.
The Equal Time Rule applies only to over the air broadcasts. YouTube is unregulated on that point.

Totally understand the point you are trying to make, but help me understand why it makes sense for someone left of the DNC to compromise their political beliefs to fight fascism but not for the DNC to do the same? Doesn’t that logic apply equally?
Also the greater good logic is why we are where we are. Why does more of the same = change?
Edit: for clarification…why isn’t the focus on the right leaning DNCers that would defect to MAGA if the DNC shifted left?

Being anti trans is being a fascist, having a democratic cover does not wash away his views on who he is ok with dying. Same as a Zionist supporting democrat.

As far as I saw he just recently said he doesn't support trans people in women's sports. This is not the same as the conservative population that generally think trans people don't have a right to exist, use bathrooms, etc. Was there anything else he has said that is anti trans? I'm looking and I am not seeing.

Nobody who is concerned about trans people in women's sports gives a fuck about women's sports. The issue is basically a dog whistle for more general anti trans beliefs.

That's why it's being pushed as hard as it is, but there's a reason it's women's sports and not, say, being around kids or any other conservative hysteria. In the absence of competing information, it's easy for a reasonable person to see the argument/dogwhistle and think "yeah sure they have a point there," and frankly the left's generally poor communication on this topic doesn't help. For clarity, by that last bit I mean "even considering the argument is automatically considered transphobia and gets condemnation rather than a rebuttal, which leaves the debate with only one side arguing their case." Questioning the intentions of anyone who brings it up is also counterproductive; people can have opinions on things they don't strongly care about.

Serious question from a trans person, are you going to vote for Ken Paxton? Do you think he'll be better for us?
Voting for most politicians isn't easy. Most of them do not have our backs. I am concerned though with good people who should be voting for harm reduction, and then putting all their energy into fighting by other means between elections, not doing that.
I am seeing a lot of people who put their effort into not voting or throwing their vote away, then feeling like they've "done something" and not doing anything else between cycles. I don't know you and I'm not accusing. I'm just curious how yelling about Talrico at this point, helps?

What’s your problem with Talarico? He’s pretty consistently voted against trans athlete bans and strongly supports LGBTQ+ rights in interviews. Why label him anti-trans?
