And not only wouldn't it be his money, it wouldn't even be "real" money. There's not a trillion dollars laying around for this (literally what it would cost).
Since Trump's first term in 2016, the debt has doubled from 19 trillion to 40 trillion. This will get tacked on and the debt will be used as an excuse not to fund social programs.

When people say an act is of desperation, they mean someone willing to throw away anything besides their most important thing.
This isn't an act of desperation, because even if he "pays up" it doesn't negatively effect them.
It's like if you were robbing me, so I said "wait, if you don't take my stuff, you can rob the neighbor!"
An act of desperation is if a home invader had a gun to your head and you said "take all my stuff just don't kill me"
I know I can be pedantic, but this clearly isn't an act of desperation because trump isn't offering anything he owns.

Someone could argue you can't deliver those billions. That person might not be on Lemmy, but let me say this: if you vote for Trump and do get 5000$ from him, his batshit crazy politics will certainly cost you more than that. At the same time, if he loses and the US goes back to 'normal', you might not get elevently bajillion from this guy but you will get a more capable leader that takes economy advice more serious which at the end of the line will mean more money for everyone who is not a billionaire. Not a crime crime. In fact, being able to make election promises with being criminalized is one of the most basic democratic rights. It is similar to how it is democratically correct that being a felon doesn't technically disqualify Trump from running for President.
But in a functional democracy, such a promise should make the voters absolutely refuse to vote for Trump. It is the equivalent of deliberately taking on credit card debt for unnecessary spending, at a time where you are already almost bankrupt.

That sounds like semantics to me. One president delivered cash to people in a time of need and uncertainty. 1400 vs 2000 is demanding perfection instead of good. He did send multiple checks as well. Trump's offered multiple times and hasn't delivered any checks to anyone. The rebate was a tariff refund to corporations after consumers paid for it.
I'm not arguing that $600 bucks is chump change but $1400 is better than nothing and to say both are liars or promise breakers is not a fair equivalency.

I don't think so, as it's not a specific promise for a given vote.
Making promises to voters is kind of a core part of democracy. "Elect me and I will do policy X". I mean, it's not conventionally a check, and Trump is something like the polar opposite of a truthful person, but in fundamental terms, I don't think that there's anything wrong with it.
What you can't do is something like "fill out your ballot for Person Y, send me a picture, and I'll pay you $N".

$5000 isn't enough money for me to change the way i vote. The negative impact of giving them more power is greater than the positive impact of that money, I could use it though. If Dems take over both chambers they should send approve the stimulus to spite him. Make him veto it and have him say he's vetoing it because Americans didn't vote the way he wanted them to.
