Do you make a grocery list, or do you just go to the store and wing it?

There’s a store like half a block from my apartment, so I just treat it like an external pantry.

remon@ani.social · 23 pts · 232d (1 reply)

Yeah, it's like a 10 minute walk to the next store. Less than 5 mins if you catch the tram. Going shopping is just a 20-30mins round-trip.

SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world · 6 pts · 232d

I’m an hour rounder to the store so I definitely don’t want to forget anything.

lowspeedchase@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 32 pts · 232d (23 replies)

I keep a list that is shared/synced with my s/o via a self-hosted KitchenOwl instance. I've been slowly porting my recipes over to it as well. Overall very satisfied and it works well.

mech@feddit.org · 17 pts · 232d (1 reply)

We use a blackboard and chalk in the kitchen and take a photo of it before we go shopping.

mybuttnolie@sopuli.xyz · 5 pts · 232d

I'm ashamed to admit this but we have a whatsapp group with just me and SO, we list the items there

SreudianFlip@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 232d (11 replies)

Yep, this method works really well in a busy schedule.

My spouse and I use iOS so we share lists that we dictate to: "add onions to the grocery list" or "add vitamin c to the pharmacy list" is pretty adhd friendly, and updated live so if one is shopping, that's inevitably when we remember something and the other one of us can update the list without texting.

I like kitchen owl, but have to use iOS for various reasons, and it's pretty low friction, even autoorganizing the list by section of store to make it easier when roaming the aisles.

All our recipes are in print or our heads at this point so we don't need a list-from-recipe feature.

vrek@programming.dev · 5 pts · 232d (8 replies)

One thing I wish one of the grocery list apps could do was to store recipes, then you choose which recipes you want that day/week/month whenever you go shopping, it's smart enough to know if 3 recipes need flour only put flour on once, then go through and mark ingredients you already have.

Like I can put in a recipe for penne alla vodka or fettuccine alfrado then if I select penne alla vodka it adds : Penne pasta Vodka sauce Heavy cream Mozzarella cheese Parmesan cheese Sausage

Etc to the list. Then I say actually I already have heavy cream and mark it as not needed.

SreudianFlip@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 232d (7 replies)

That seems like a perfectly reasonable feature list!

vrek@programming.dev · 2 pts · 232d (6 replies)

Do you know of anything that does this? I'm kinda tempted to sketch out a plan to do it myself but I already have a totally different project I'm working on and struggling with.

AA5B@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 232d (2 replies)

I use Paprika on iOS, which does this.

  • import a recipe from any URL - including source, photos, nutritional info
  • keeps a database of recipes
  • create meals or calendars of recipes
  • generate a categorized grocery list

I have a folder full of recipe files from before I got that, but haven’t really looked yet for anyway to import those

vrek@programming.dev · 2 pts · 231d (1 reply)

Just looked into this, there is a android version and seems to be similar to what I want. Thanks for the recommendation. Can you tell me what the advantage of paying for it is?

AA5B@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 231d

I don’t know - I found it well done and suited my needs so I paid for it.

SreudianFlip@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 232d (2 replies)

I don't know of anything like that, but it seems like parsing out multiple different formats for recipe ingredient lists would be one of the major obstacles to consistency and reliability.

I don't know much about digital recipes, other than the crap that is various websites with their ingredient list obfuscation game.

vrek@programming.dev · 2 pts · 232d (1 reply)

Yeah but I'm not even asking for that. I literally want a "start recipe" button... I enter each ingredient in separate text boxes... Optional "instruction" box to paste the instructions... Later I decide "on Tuesday let's have home made pizza, then on Wednesday we'll do beef tips and noodles" and I click a check box or type in recipe name, system sees ingredients I previously entered for that recipe and adds it to grocery list.

No web scrapping or parsing needed. I will enter the ingredients for each recipe but I only want to enter it once

SreudianFlip@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 232d

Oh yeah, I get it. On iOS I use a simple database app called Collections that I really like, I use it for mileage tracking and certain kinds of journaling or lists that need extra features like a relational key or lookups or sketch or calculation fields etc. When I can’t find an app that does what I want.

Basically a simple roll-yer-own approach. I haven’t looked into sharing the data dynamically, though. I think Collections is iOS only, probably similar apps galore on android. https://collectionsdb.com/

Beacon@fedia.io · 2 pts · 232d (1 reply)

We do exactly the same but with Alexa

SreudianFlip@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 232d

Hm, I feel bad enough trying to trust that apple is respecting our privacy in iCloud sync, it’s a stretch, but data processed by an aggressive retailer about my shopping, don’t think I could do it.

huquad@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 232d (2 replies)

And just like that, I found a replacement for bring...

Now to convince the wife. Any QoL improvements?

lowspeedchase@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 232d (1 reply)

When I first deployed to my VPS the iOS client would keep auto updating and then refusing to connect to the older version deployed (android client had no issues) - they were pushing updates often. I setup a chron job to pull the latest docker image and restart the containers, no more problems. Dunno if that is still necessary or not.

Darohan@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 232d

Can confirm it isn't, I was also a user during that period, and still am, I haven't had to update my docker image in a fair while.

hydrashok@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 232d

Same, but we use OneNote.

sauerkrautsaul@lemmus.org · 2 pts · 232d

I forgot I was on lemmy for 30 seconds, thank you

SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 232d (3 replies)

Christ, why is everything a fucking docker image these days?

HotDog7@feddit.online · 2 pts · 232d (1 reply)

What's wrong with Docker? Spinning up KitchenOwl was as easy as just copying and pasting the Docker Compose file.

SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 232d

It's a waste of disk space, fucks up iptables, doesn't isolate UID/GID, doesn't reap orphaned processes, and just overall adds another layer complexity to what could just be a simple package installation.

acockworkorange@mander.xyz · 0 pts · 216d

Maintainability and reproducibility by the software maintainers.

It does have several package formats on their github.

Kolanaki@pawb.social · 29 pts · 232d (5 replies)

I make a list, forget the list, and end up winging it.

sauerkrautsaul@lemmus.org · 6 pts · 232d

this is the way. write a list, put it on the table while youre getting ready, get to the store, check your pockets, say FUCK in the store. do your best from there.

elephantium@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 232d (3 replies)

I make my list on my phone for exactly this reason.

Kolanaki@pawb.social · 4 pts · 232d (2 replies)

I forget my phone, which had the list. Or worse:

I have my phone, so I have my list, go to pay: Forgot wallet. 😩

elephantium@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 231d

Oof, that's rough. For me, for whatever reason, I'm very consistent any time I leave my house: Phone, wallet, keys.

SW42@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 231d

I have my wallet when I have my phone. I use contactless payment 95% of the time with my phone.

disregardable@lemmy.zip · 17 pts · 232d (9 replies)

like 80% of what I need is repetitive. if I make a list, it's because I'm making a recipe.

Beacon@fedia.io · 5 pts · 232d (8 replies)

I don't understand how that would work, everything runs out at different rates. Something like eggs, sure, just get a dozen every week. But things like mayo, laundry detergent, tofu, cheese, etc., these all need to be re-bought at very different random times.

disregardable@lemmy.zip · 6 pts · 232d (6 replies)

It works because I'm only one person. Not buying for a full family. I'm definitely not going through giant packs of cheese and laundry detergent at random times.

0ops@piefed.zip · 5 pts · 232d (4 replies)

I'm also one person but if I don't keep a list I'll end up with no milk and 10 boxes of cereal (real example)

disregardable@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 232d (2 replies)

Yeah I would just never do that. Like I just remember that I have 2 boxes at home but need milk.

0ops@piefed.zip · 3 pts · 232d (1 reply)

There's the rub, I straight up can't trust my memory like that, I might remember needing to do something but then forget that I already did it.

With that milk example, I'll remember that I need more milk, get the milk, go home, open the fridge, see milk already there, remember that I already got more milk a couple days ago, put new-new milk next to old-new milk, and legit fucking do it again a couple days from now leaving me with three jugs of milk. Memory is borked I guess.

Fun fact: I have so, so much tooth floss and white rice rn due to this fun phenomenon

RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 231d

I have 3 bottles of shampoo under my sink, so I can relate.

Beacon@fedia.io · 1 pts · 232d

Exactly. I'm not sure what op is misunderstanding, but cereal is another perfect example. You don't buy cereal on every shopping trip, so when you go shopping you need to know if you need to get cereal on that trip

Beacon@fedia.io · 3 pts · 232d

I don't see how that answers the scenario i posed, but hey do what works for you

AA5B@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 232d

For me it worked with a family as well, given that I do all the cooking.

A big part of it is I buy in bulk when possible. Not only do I have a large stock of laundry detergent but I have a chest freezer with large stock of meat.

  • I don’t need a list for Costco runs because it’s every few months and the things I’m low on are top of mind. Also, I try to buy ahead and keep them in stock so no big deal if I miss something and have to go back a couple months later.
  • what I buy at the grocery is much smaller and dominated by things I buy every week

Eggs, milk, bread, produce every week. Meat if it’s not in the chest freezer. Double it if a kid is home from college

Mayo is from Costco. Normal size, Believe it or not, they’re the only ones I know who carry kewpie mayo. So I’ll get it and an extra to keep in stock, and worry about it next Costco run. If I forget, no big deal, we can go without mayo or I can get something on next grocery run

I do use a recipe manager, which can import recipes from any URL, and can generate a categorized grocery list. If I want a recipe, it’s probably there, so I’ll look at that list

LordMayor@piefed.social · 15 pts · 232d

Plan meals for a week. Make list of what’s needed. Shop once a week. Rarely eat out. Never delivery.

Mothra@mander.xyz · 12 pts · 232d

My family always made a very careful list which was followed when grocery shopping.

Now that I do my own shopping I also make a list, on my phone though. I note down only the very essentials and leave most things open to what I can find whenever I get to shop. For example, I really need eggs and deodorant so I write that, but if I need veg I don't list the type of veg, I just note "veg on special" and make my choice on the spot.

morphballganon@mtgzone.com · 11 pts · 232d

I have a spouse and child. Winging it simply would not fly.

Anything less than strict adherence to a list would be another fight... and there are already too many of those.

Wing it

I did worse than wing it actually... half of the groceries I got over the past few weeks were from Too Good To Go, so near-expired food that the grocery store winged-it for me💀

rmuk@feddit.uk · 5 pts · 232d

Depending on the store TGTT bags can be amazing or... not so much. One store near me will always include fresh fruit, veg, meats, rolls, cans... another will just hand over a bag with like ten kilos of sliced ham in it.

TGTT with a freezer is a game-changer, though.

jjjalljs@ttrpg.network · 2 pts · 231d

Maybe I should check out their grocery options. I've mostly been using Too Good to Go for like a pizza @ $4.

dusty_raven@discuss.online · 9 pts · 232d

I'm shocked nobody has mentioned Aisleron (https://aisleron.com/), I use it for my semi-monthly shopping. It lets you organize items, and then you swipe it if you're out of it/need to buy more. You can have different stores set up, and each item will go to the corresponding location in that store.

It basically functions like a database for grocery items with an intuitive interface.

Oh, did I mention it's FOSS?

Tudsamfa@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 232d

i_stole_ur_taco@lemmy.ca · 9 pts · 232d (1 reply)

I stopped winging it after all too often ending up with both a fridge full of rotting produce and yet also nothing to eat. Turns out grocery shopping needs some strategy that I can’t do without help.

AnyList has been an awesome tool for me. It’s got all my recipes, a meal plan building to sketch out the next week, and builds a shopping list so I can only buy the things I will for sure cook with.

It’s also made me realize I’m not about to buy fresh herbs or green onions when they’re only going to be used as a bit of garnish for one dish.

AA5B@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 232d

For me the meal planning is more important than the shopping list.

Even with a list I still may get a bunch of random stuff and no meals. But if I know what meals I want to make, I can do a decent job even winging it

Formfiller@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 231d

A little of both. As a mom you get used to doing a mental inventory of what you have and what you need to create meals for everyone while trying to reduce waste

blackn1ght@feddit.uk · 8 pts · 232d (1 reply)

I usually do our food shop online, however I plan the meals and write down everything we need for the week. If I'm going to the shop then I'll write the list down in the order I'll move through the shop so that i can just work my way down through the list.

Hossenfeffer@feddit.uk · 3 pts · 232d

Same.

I have a spreadsheet of every meal I've cooked for the last three years, with a meals look-up tab that allows me to filter by cuisine, protein, carb, and then also pulls in the date from the planning sheet so I can see how long it is since I last cooked that meal. Makes weekly meal planning a lot easier, eg: I want a chicken and rice dish that I haven't cooked for at least two months, then a vegetarian pasta dish for next day. No problem!

Maiq@piefed.social · 7 pts · 232d

I make a list and every so often I remember to bring it with me.

Canopyflyer@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 232d

Grocery list and I take a pen along and mark everything off when it goes into the cart.

Yeah, I'm old.

I'd love to have a database with all my recipes with ingredients and add them at a click of the button. The problem is I have a fairly well stocked kitchen and I still need to go through the list anyway to make sure I'm not buying anything I already have. So having a computerized system really doesn't save me any time.

titter@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 232d (1 reply)

I make a menu that includes two breakfasts (6 and 9 am) a lunch (11) and six dinners. I account for what i have and list the rest of the needs. Then i go shopping and add two treats(for snacking or dessert) and two beverages (oj, pop, prebrewed coffee, rtc) and a freezer pizza.

If i have to go back that week for anything, i fucked up.

hakunawazo@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 231d

two breakfasts

ada@piefed.blahaj.zone · 6 pts · 232d

I don't make lists for anything. My life is pretty much winging it... Which does explain a lot when I type it out like that :P

SW42@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 232d

It’s a bit of both. We do have a list with the staple items and foods we buy and we check it to see if our pantry needs refilling but other than than we just take what we think would be good and/or useful

Perspectivist@feddit.uk · 6 pts · 232d

I've been eating the same things every day for over a decade. I can manage without list.

remon@ani.social · 5 pts · 232d

No list and I do constantly forget stuff. But I also go shopping every other day, so it's not like anything essential will be forgotten for too long.

snooggums@piefed.world · 4 pts · 232d

Both!

Always go a list nowadays as I have ADHD and if I go for three things I will forget one of them. The list is what I must get, but once there, I get what is on the list and then maybe get a few more things that I forgot to put on the list.

So I never really make a full and complete list, just a list of necessities and wing the rest.

thevoidzero@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 232d

Mostly wing it based on my memory. But in some occasions, there's a list of important stuffs. It's mostly just 2,3 items like "we're out of potatoes/onions/salt", then wing the rest.

I think except for important and constant stuffs like spices, it's better to just buy what's available cheap and make your food from that. But that could be just me

I make a list of the things I need, organized by the places I need to stop and buy them and a list of the things I need to do

yes. I have this botepad on the fridge whenever I notice something is needed I write it down and when I go to the store I just grab that list, anything I didn't/couldn't get I try to write back down. I tend to forget to get the list so I half wing usually to poor results

slazer2au@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 232d

make a list, then also wing it at the store.

Deestan@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 232d

Both.

My grocery list is just to prevent me forgetting the main points. So three items on the list "cat litter, dinner somehow, bake a cake" turns into any number of things bought as I decide on what to make for dinner and which cake to bake while shopping.

BanaramaClamcrotch@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 232d

I wing it. Since I don’t know how to cook, I usually just walk around the grocery store, anxious as fuck, pick out a bunch of junk food, and go home and starve.

Fortunately, my gf is a wiz in the kitchen— cooking, baking, whateva. She handles the groceries now too, I’m just the cart pusher and bag carrier.

When I lived alone I did not need a list. I did meal prep and for most perishables I could get away with using a whole unit so as long as I remembered the recepie I was fine most of the time.

Living with a girlfriend that is a very picky eater that changes what she likes every day made it too complex to keep track of. She sends me the list, I go by the store on my way home from work.

mech@feddit.org · 2 pts · 232d

I make a list in the order I'll find the things in the store, walk through once and I'm done.
My partner has a different strategy though: They go through every single isle and actively search for things we might need (even if we never ever needed or missed them before).

RebekahWSD@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 232d

Maestro@fedia.io · 2 pts · 232d

List. I have a shared digital list with my wife. When we run out of something (or when open the last package/box/tin) we put it on the list. But sometimes the list just says "dinner" or "breakfast 2x" and we wing it.

Later I'll probably meet a friend or go for a walk and on the way back do the shopping, without any lists and forgetting half the stuff I need.

That's pretty much my average.

Lembot_0006@programming.dev · 2 pts · 232d

LIst. A mere scrap of paper we keep nearby on which my spouse and I jot down whatever we see is or will soon be depleted and need to be renewed. The first of us that is able to do errands simply grab the list and that's it. The moment we notice the list is not where it is supposed to be 1) we know the other is doing errands 2) we start a new list ;)

Doing so, we never have to wonder what we need to buy when we're doing errands, we just follow the list.

etchinghillside@reddthat.com · 1 pts · 232d

+1 repetitive single person.

I make a grocery checklist categorized/sectioned by area of the store.

Even if the list is repetitive - it just helps ensure I don’t forget something while daydreaming at the store or end up with 10 bottles of a condiment because I’m afraid that I have might run out.

Doing grocery shopping without a list is a waste of money.

seathru@quokk.au · 1 pts · 232d (2 replies)

I've rarely been in a grocery store since covid. Once they rolled out order online and pick it up later, I'm never willingly going back.

So I guess that counts as making a list.

I got so sick of the shoppers screwing up my items and or getting crappy items, that I stopped getting food delivered.

seathru@quokk.au · 1 pts · 232d

I hear that all the time. Including from coworkers in the same area. I guess I've just been lucky. I keep track of it and my messed up items (wrong flavor/expired/opened/damaged) is like 2-3%. Which is probably better than my own track record TBH.

But I also do my best to lessen the burden on the shoppers. I try to keep it simple, I try to pick slow times & nice weather, I try to tip well.

jjjalljs@ttrpg.network · 1 pts · 231d

AA5B@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 232d

Both.

  • for something unusual or occasional I make a list
  • for my usual stuff the fastest approach is to just take every aisle and wing it

For example for dinners in a week

  • I’ll just wing it to get a couple packages of chicken and some veggies. I do the same every week
  • I’ll need a list if I’m out of a spice or need rice or scallions or something
HatchetHaro@pawb.social · 1 pts · 232d

aramis87@fedia.io · 1 pts · 232d

Things get added to a list on my phone as I use things up or decide I want to make something. I absolutely use that list in the store - but I also buy on impulse: "oh, that looks really good / is on sale, I have a recipe but I'll need these other things". Or sometimes one thing will set off a chain: those chips the kids love are on super sale so I'll get them, and we should have some queso dip to go with them, and if we have queso dip I should get cauliflower, and if we have cauliflower ... "

tiredofsametab@fedia.io · 1 pts · 232d

Both. Anything not in the normal set (milk, salad, peanuts, tofu, natto, bananas,.and sweet pepper) gets written down immediately when I know we used up the previous one or need something for a particular recipe. We also get sushi and ice cream once a week (usually on Friday) unless we're going out to eat.

MrsDoyle@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 232d

If I'm baking or cooking to a recipe with unusual ingredients I definitely make a list. I've got a master list of staples on my phone with check boxes that I sometimes use. But mostly I wing it. Top tip: never do your grocery shopping when you're hungry.

What new things are you afraid to try if you want to avoid a random person picking unripe/overripe/damaged produce? Most of the time it's fine, but when you want salad tomatoes and get salsa tomatoes instead, you learn not to rely on them.

Lol, ok but that doesn't happen. Think Amazon, you get what you want.

I just want you to cum super mega hard. Don't you wanna cum super mega hard? Because you'll save 2-3hours a week, so you can focus on that super nut.

But someone shopping in person is much more likely to try new things. When you shop online you're just entering items into a search bar so you're not going to branch out as much obviously. Wheras in person you see something and it catches your eye, there's sale sign, a display or something and boom you get something new.

Yes I'm aware how sale tactics work that wasn't really the question of the topic though. Also me getting black grapes cuz I see a sign saying they're a dollar cheaper than the red grapes I was planning to get isn't making me go broke thank you.

I politely disagree, because in my exp marketing and advertising window pop ups do show up online too so you get exposed to new things.

But in general, I trust you to shop and grow at your own pace and curiosity.

Ie Those who start shopping online, like Amazon, find way more variety vs those who stick to in person Stores.

But hey, you do you. I just hope you cum super mega hard.

What a fucking bizarre way to sign off there.

Also use pop-up blockers.
