What made you choose your Fediverse Instance?
Why did you choose your Fediverse Instance, does it have a bigger meaning than it was a bigger instance or was it for a certain reason? Did you have to be on your instance you chose?

I didn't give a shit
My account on the old nsfw stopped working because apparently someone shit the bed or stopped doing something or whatever
It's not something that I care about, so I just did whatever
I have no idea what instance I'm on
I don't even know what instances are, or what difference it makes

You are on lemmy.world
You can see the instance others are on by the @ after their name. If they don't have one, they are local to you.
tacosanonymous@mander.xyz · 3 pts · 168d
I think that it depends on how you access lemmy. Iirc, voyager and some others allow you to toggle user instances (at least for comments)
Cethin@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 166d
That sounds odd if that is an option. My doesn't show instances if it's the same as mine. However, since this is all federated, you can have the same username as someone else from another instance. If it doesn't show instances then that could be confusing at best, if not used maliciously.
tacosanonymous@mander.xyz · 1 pts · 166d
It’s not really locked or kept from us. We can just choose it to visually declutter.
I don’t really care what instance someone is from. If I need to know, I can just tap their name.
Cethin@lemmy.zip · 0 pts · 166d
I don't really care what instance they're from, but I do care who they are. It's like if we just went by our first names here, there would be so much confusion with common first names. You'd need to at least use their last name to know if they're the same person or not. With federation, you can have the same name as someone else on a different instance. I don't really care where they're from usually, but it is important for identification.
In my opinion, this is less declutter and more obfuscation. There's potentially important information that isn't being shown. Often it isn't an issue, but sometimes it is.
cepelinas@sopuli.xyz · 1 pts · 166d
Yeah, also when you click on an account you see the full name and when commenting.

I made accounts on a few instances, but I stuck with this one (and eventually joined the team) for the same reasons
fedicate@break3.social · 1 pts · 168d
That's a good combo, especially local content. Do you ever find the local content gets lost?
reksas@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 168d
i dont know, i dont pay that much attention to stuff like that so i'm not 100% sure about the drama part either, but i dont recall ever being annoyed by such things which is good enough for me. Its not extremely huge instance, around 5k users and 200 posts/ day. I think that helps too. Oh, i forgot to mention that I like admins here too, they are nice people.

NSFW is a very generic tag. I usually browse subscribed so porn popping up is not a problem. I still want to see NSFW-tagged footage from conflicts or the occasional mild NSFW art. Photos are blurred by default so it's not like someone will see it by accident.
Cethin@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 166d
Also, your client probably has an option to display NSFW posts. I don't see any reason for an instance admin to do so.
adhd_traco@piefed.social · 11 pts · 168d

The public feed, rules, etc. also looked like a good match for me. And I'm absolutely grateful to be able to post from here!

Dring the Reddit Migration, this was the first one I heard about, so I picked it. Haven't been bothered to change it since.
fedicate@break3.social · 3 pts · 167d
Do you feel you will change in the future?
I know there's been an okay amount of people that have said about how they moved from Lemmy World due to moderation over reach along with often being de-federated from other instances on bias' (I have no evidence of this, just comments from others to this post)
AstroLightz@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 167d
Probably not, unless something major happens.
mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 168d
I migrated during Reddit's API debacle. I picked sh.itjust.works for several reasons:
While some things have changed like defederating from more servers, it's left up to a vote by users of the server and the vote doesn't get proposed unless there's a good reason (such as a server being Nazi-friendly or constantly harassing/trolling users)
fedicate@break3.social · 1 pts · 167d
I find that keeping the Fediverse open to others as much as possible is a really helpful thing instead of De-Federating on the first little bad message from a user that probably got missed or is being dealt with by the system admin.
mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 167d
The Nazi instance that got blocked literally had something adjacent to "nazi" in their url. Fairly clear decision if you ask me. This was a few months ago so I don't recall the actual server name without digging it up.
Then there was the Hexbear fiasco, where they decided to federate with us (apparently they have it set up for admins to opt-in to federation instead of opt-out). They ended up swarming all of our communities for 4-5 days with nonstop harassment. Then their admins decided to re-defederate before we could vote on whether to block them. Literally a "you can't fire me, I quit!" scenario.
fedicate@break3.social · 0 pts · 166d
Yeah if something has like "Hey I'm a terrible person.net" yeah get rid of them.
With the hexbear that kinda sucks, by the sounds of it they have a lot of traffic and well keeping the system from flooding others is great it kinda needs some work if you are getting that much traffic from one instance.
mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 166d
With Hexbear, it wasn't just traffic. It was straight up harassment. They were constantly calling our users Nazis, bigots, imperialists, etc. for no reason

Are you planning on keeping all three or are you planning on dropping say Lemmy for Piefed as they do the same things?
meejle@piefed.world · 1 pts · 167d
There are different things I like about them… 🤔 I really like the way PieFed merges crossposts together, although I wish it could be smarter at "noticing" identical posts that weren't actually crossposted.
But then, I really like "Scaled" sorting, and Lemmy's seems way better to me. (I couldn't begin to tell you why.) I also like having more choice of Android apps on Lemmy, but I'm sure that'll change quickly enough.
So I guess it might depend on how development goes on both platforms?
Endmaker@ani.social · 4 pts · 168d
I started with lemmy.world, the biggest generalist instance, for an easy starting point. I thought I would be interacting in programming and anime threads.
In the end, I end up discussing mostly weeb stuff, so ani.social looks more appropriate.
Also, I don't know the specifics, but if ani.social triggered lemmy.ml enough for lemmy.ml to defederate from ani.social, it must be doing something right.
In my experience, the instance and community moderators of ani.social are based. I barely see any drama unlike some other instances. I'd say I chose well.

Slrpnk was down for a few days and the admin was super transparent about what was going on (iirc, they were on a business trip and something happened to their home server that needed a physical button press). I was happy with that level of communication, and occasional down time is good for getting out and touching grass.
edit: I was on sdf before, but they're a lot less transparent about maintenance issues.
fedicate@break3.social · 1 pts · 168d
Having admins that tell you what's going on is so helpful. Also yes having a balance between online life and real life is really good to have. Well I still like having my servers there for me and others when it's needed it's nice to know you are finding a silver-lining in it sometimes going down for maintenance and other things.
kreskin@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 167d
.world was the biggest one. I have since switched to one that doesnt have abusive zionist mods in news and worldnews (looking at you, jordanlund), but I still come back to .world periodically when I dont see much new content on the instance I like. Mods moderating to support their own biases can ruin a site.

Fair enough, do you think that the main piefed instance is good enough or do you think you'd move to a different instances in the future but stay with the piefed software?
gigachad@piefed.social · 2 pts · 167d
I'll stay with PieFed but move to a different instance. Not so much because of piefed.social, but I move once a year or so because of privacy reasons. piefed.social is okay, it pisses me off a bit that they have some weird hardcoded filters activated like banning the green text community which I really liked. But apart from that you can't do anything wrong with it!
I am using Voyager on Android btw., where I don't get to see most of the piefed features anyway.

Literally every single instance I've ever joined has either died/shutdown or had weeks/months long outages.
Hate, hate, hate.
Anyway, I almost didn't make it on to lemmy dot zip -- There's a glaring bug and major UI malfunction on the web version of the sign-up form. I tried signing up, got some generic error message "InvalidName", but not indication about what was invalid about it. Tried several variations of the name I wanted, no dice. Tried "InvalidName" itself, didn't work. So I tried "InvalidName2" and that finally worked.
After all that effort to join, figured I'd stay a bit.
fedicate@break3.social · 1 pts · 167d
Glad you finally got onto the Instance, what made you choose Lemmy over Mbin or Piefed?
InvalidName2@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 167d
Piefed web UI was absolutely rancid, at least the one time I tried it, which was not that long ago. Mbin, I feel like I did try at one time, but it was down or sign-ups weren't functional at all at the time, so I figured they didn't really care enough about it, which put a damper on my enthusiasm.
lasta@piefed.world · 3 pts · 168d
I chose from the general purpose instances because I don’t know enough about or align myself closely with the more niche instances. The stability of the instances and number of instances it blocked/was blocked by was also a factor, since I wanted a neutral experience - here’s where I found that data.
After lemm.ee shut down, I wanted to try PieFed, and the name piefed.world made me imagine a world fed with pie. Thought that was cute.

I have problems with control and lack of choice, when my first instance started de-federating willy nilly I started growing distaste on it. To me it wasn't about what /was/ being censored, to me it was the fact that they were doing so in the first place, while doing so with very little public input. so I liked kbin a lot and it was cause of ernest and what he was doing. then when it kinda fell apart I joined a small mbin instance based on what they guy who runs it wrote which was mostly just about being very much against censorship. Then piefed came about and what im on now is kinda the main instance and honestly its about the devs again who just were passionate about making something great and really expanding capabilities and such. I use a web portal and mostly im following the features I guess with features being things that put as much control in the hands of the user as possible.
fedicate@break3.social · 1 pts · 167d
Yeah it was sad seeing Kbin fall apart, tried Mbin and it's great but doesn't have the same feel in some ways sadly, Maybe the project could get a heart and grow in there own direction in the future as there's so many things they could do to become a great all around Instance but heard amazing things about Piefed and it's on the list of Software I hope to visit and try out in the near future.
HubertManne@piefed.social · 2 pts · 167d
yeah mbin forked because earnest was a bit to controlling but honestly it kinda felt like a good mmo in maintenance mode. Piefed is sorta the best of both as while it certainly has some stand out hard working devs it also has a development community talking and trying to make it and taking feedback. How come you are using multiple instances? Is it due to the different interfaces?
I know I run this and a few other accounts from a Sharkey (Microblogging) Instance, from here I get to do most things including post things up on Lemmy & Piefed with just mentioning the Community in the post.
Wafrn is an interesting one, only just started to look into it but it looks like it has some promise to be a Tumblr like experience on the Fediverse.

I use them for different interfaces, different people and different things (I mostly comment/lurk on Lemmy, post random thoughts on Mastodon and post more art on Wafrn).
I rarely see Mastodon posts on Lemmy and vice-versa, and this Wafrn instance has native BlueSky integration which I find interesting (I haven't actually enabled it on my account yet, so I can see but not interact with BlueSky posts).

I think people go the wrong way with instancing, I get it that people don't want to see certain things and that is true of everyone too but we should be doing that kind of filtering as individual users only after the instance allows mostly everything to come in, excluding anything obviously bad but not automatically excluding anything political in certain ways for example.
So that's why I choose things like peertube.wtf because it is everything minus whatever I choose not to subscribe to.
And Lemmy.zip because it is relatively open for everyone
People also go the same way with ai, trying to pin it down to specific things in its personality before you even prompt it, it should be biased towards more connectivity before you go pinning it down.

I’m hosting my own, I don’t wanna have to rely on someone else to do a good job for me

Amazing choice, it's what we've ended up doing with break3.social and social.fedicate.org our Sharkey instances but running more instances is the goal with Lemmy or Piefed in the future.
Glad to see others host there own instance

For Lemmy I just chose a larger instance and went with it. I've considered moving to one more aligned with my interests though hasn't been much reason to yet.
For Mastodon I went with Fosstodon precisely for my interests as I can better enjoy the local feed.
fedicate@break3.social · 1 pts · 167d
A good local feed is always helpful. Though I've resorted more to the Global as of late as run my own instances and often don't invite to many people.

Instance??

The server you're on!
Like how you're on infosec.pub, the OP is on break3.social, the community (subreddit equivalent) is on lemmy.world, and I'm on pawb.social. :3

wetdry.world is an awesome name and fun instance.

I wanted a place for the digital nomad and travel niche, so I made it. I'm hoping to have resources like maps, tips, and other things like blogs
check out the communities https://piefed.keyboardvagabond.com/communities?home_select=local
there's also [pixelfed](https://pixel/ fed.keyboardvagabobd.com) and mastodon, though it's been a bit harder to get them as full with content
fedicate@break3.social · 1 pts · 166d
Amazing to see system admins pop up, it's amazing to create your own instance that others can join and interact. In the future we plan on making PixelFed and Lemmy instances for certain use cases. I think the travel niche could really use the PixelFed system fairly well with how taking photos on your travels could be a helpful thing.
I also know there's some people posting on Loops.video travel things that might work for a future instance at some point.

Saw someone getting really bad tech tips, signed up to interject. Stuck around cause it's a cool name, suspect we may be defederated from some of the spicier instances, miss em but not enough to change right now

Smurf pie is the undisputed best ;)
Or maybe I liked Piefed features better than the previous I was using?
fedicate@break3.social · 1 pts · 167d
Heard pretty good things about Piefed, never have been able to try it out myself yet but it's on the list of things to try out.
Libb@piefed.social · 1 pts · 167d
It's easy to give it a try and decide if it's worth changing (I've done it and even though it's great to be able to do that, it's far from being complete and painless (one may not like losing all their previous posts/comments when changing instance).
I just checked I switched from Lemmy 9 months ago and and I've yet to find a reason to go see elsewhere. There things I don't like as much as others but they're easy to ignore ;)

More reliable than lemdro.id, European (low ping) and it isn't .ml or lemmygrad.
hexagonwin@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 168d
i used to use lemmy.sdf.org since I liked sdf.org, but it sadly isn't maintained that well. lemmy.today seems to have no instance blocks, have good stability and support for the old reddit style frontend
calmblue75@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 168d
This was the first stable community on which I was able to make an account on, after many failed attempts at other instances. I had a lemmy.cafe account before, but I was not getting recent posts. Another reason is that I am mostly ok with this community's moderation policies. When I was yet to choose an instance, I saw a lot of fearmongering in the fediverse about ml, hexbear and lemmygrad being very toxic communities. I put off for long till I got convinced that ml was actually a decent community. There will be some toxic users in any community, offline or online. But certain bullshit is not tolerated on ml, like ableist language, apathy to people outside the US, hate speech etc. So, here I am.

The need for almost seamless posting between personal feed microblogging and Threadiverse exchanging, alongside text formatting features and large-enough max character limit. This is why I ended up sticking with Calckey.
fedicate@break3.social · 0 pts · 168d
@dsilverz@calckey.world What's the benefits of sticking with Calckey over something like Sharkey or another Misskey Fork? As from my research I can find Calckey has had 2 years since the last update to the code, is it even being maintained anymore?
Also agree with you fully, the features of a Misskey Fork is so amazing to have with the 3k character limit and utility with the custom emojis and other features are a god send.

Most (if not all) Misskey instances I could find were Japanese-speaking, and I don't know Japanese. Something similar applies to most Sharkey instances, many I could find were Japanese-speaking.
There was also the factor "open for sign-ups": at the time, calckey.world was among the few instances where registrations were open (most instances are closed for registration, requiring an invite or requiring the admin to manually set up a new account for someone). At the time, I was using Friendica, which often experienced (and still experiences) downtimes, and I was trying to find something similar to Friendica, or at least something as similar as possible.
fedicate@break3.social · 0 pts · 167d
This is something I've been trying to solve, well our social.fedicate.org instance is currently invite only we hope that we can open it up to registrations in the future. We are currently settings things up to set things up correctly as the break3.social instance (the one this account users) is a business instance for projects and other stuff mainly worked on by @sam
Hopefully we see more Sharkey instance that are english based in the future as I know a good few that are english based are Trans / LGBT based what I don't think is your cup of tea (or it might be I don't know)

While I totally understand the purpose behind closing registrations for a platform behind invites or applications, because, this way, things like spamming and trolls are better kept out and the platform stays moderatable, it also ends up keeping out people like me, friendless and socially awkward individuals whose worldviews are extremely atypical (as for me, it's my explicit occultist demonolater positioning, something that may be uneasy for most people). Don't get me wrong, I understand the antispam and anti-troll pturpose, it's a purpose I can definitely agree with.
And given how the instance is still undergoing configuration, it's even more important to keep it closed until it's ready.
I'm not exactly an LGBTQIA+ individual, although I may be a queer myself, I'm not exactly sure. But I'm very fond of LGBTQIA+ individuals: to me, LGBTQIA individuals feel like the most sincere and authentic ones one can find, values of which I highly value.
My main thing, however, is occultism. I'm a demonolater, I'm Luciferian (sort of, given my syncretic approach that mostly revolves around the worshiping of The Dark Mother Goddess who I often identify as being Lilith and Ereshkigal, among other goddesses and feminine entities across several belief systems, including Her being the personification of Death).
The kind of content I'm fond of involves things such as cosmic horror (Lovecraftian), self-loathing (as part of the ego death), endorsement for lots of concepts often considered as taboos, etc... Sometimes I make and share poetry and drawings (out of spiritual inspiration/channeling/gnosis), often filled with non-pornographic depiction of nudity and kink-edging situations (not exactly for eroticism, but for almost similar reasons to why Goddess Kali is depicted across Hindu paintings with bare chests while trampling over a masculine corpse, or to why Neolithic Venus figurines all involved naked figures), blood (as part of vampire motifs and Memento Mori), sensitive symbolism (snakes, spiders, scorpions, uncanny valley faces, vivid red coloration, scythes and the Reapress, fangs, etc), among other things... This kind of content can be quite complicated, few places allow this kind of niche and potentially-sensitive content. This, alongside other traits I have (such as neurodivergence, potentially being an AuDHD myself), makes the search for a "digital home" (where I'm allowed to be my authentic self, the one that Lilith awakened in me) a Sisyphean task.
