To be frank the overwhelming amount of trump news is starting to make me feel drained
I should post some art on the furry communities to cheer up the place
We don’t have enough small speciality communities yet unfortunately. Bring the furries and the cheer. I miss all the professional/trade subs. Don’t see many of them active on here.
I’ve noticed I spend less time on Lemmy than I did on Reddit. Some of that may have to do with content, but I think it’s mostly Lemmy isn’t manipulating what I’m looking at to keep the dopamine hits coming. It definitely feels like withdrawal at times.
I am learning to appreciate the joy of opening Lemmy after I checked it a few hours ago and not seeing anything new and having the freedom to close the app again.
Absolutely this. I banned the big platforms from my phone and only use Fediverse apps now. When I opened Instagram it kinda felt like when I had a relapse and became flooded with sadness, rage and Weltschmerz. Here I check for a couple of minutes, still my conditioning to reach for scrolling and move on with my day.
And whenever I write a comment here I'm not scared to regret it soon after.
Weirdly in my own personal experience, a lot of social media spaces have been quieter, with many people I know who used to be avid posters are now no longer posting at all.
For the fediverse specifically, there's definitely higher activity hours and low ones. Sometimes refreshing the feed has nothing new for like ~20 minutes, and sometimes its every time I refresh, which is kind of odd.
I feel this. I stopped using almost all social media except pie fed (if you can call pie fed social media). This makes me part of the disappearing voices elsewhere, I used to be pretty active elsewhere.
I post daily and have a fairly steady amount of up votes and comments. This time of year interaction dies down pretty noticeably. I used to think it was me and I was doing something wrong, but people are just doing spring stuff and not on here as much. They'll be back. There's a couple periods a year where it happens. It's just more noticeable here since we have less people.
I noticed it too with the upvotes on my content. A few weeks ago my predictions when I hit a certain mark of upvotes were pretty accurate, but now the amount of upvotes in the first 12h dropped notably.
Your mention of spring sound like a plausible reasoning to me.
I used to discuss it with the people on c/fedigrow because it would bum me out. I thought I had upset people somehow.
They reminded me of things like spring break from school and people doing family things and all that. I don't have kids or close family, so a lot of that kind of thing slips my mind that others have to do things in relation to that.
And once you see they do eventually come back, you get used to it.
I would feel the same as you if I were the only poster in the communities. But as there is at least one other (MentalEdge) and the dent is similar, I don't need to worry (about my quality; but still if the community as a whole is running fine if they don't come back after a while).
I’ve seen a lot more pro violence posts and comments lately, which is pretty off putting. I’ve not posted several times because I don’t want to end up on a list because of some echo chambers of maladjusted people. I don’t comment that often to begin with, and lemme/piefed seems to attract people banned from other platforms and other weirdos. Just not a very welcoming platform.
I’ve seen a lot of violence posts coming from non us users. It seems there’s some kind of effort to incite the us into violence going on and I don’t like it one bit.
I’ve seen a lot more pro violence posts and comments lately, which is pretty off putting.
I don't see much if any content promoting violence myself but if I was I would agree with you. I also don't post any, and was not banned from anywhere: I left reddit the moment I realized I disagreed with their policy.
So, if I may ask: have you tried using the settings to decide what's (not) displayed in your home feed, coupled with keywords and blocking the most obvious trolls, those are fine tools to remove most if not all of that... sad content.
For example, on my home feed I only display 'Subscribed' content meaning that the only content I read comes from those communities I'm already subscribed to... none of which promoting any violence or, when this happens or when I realize some community is not what I expected it to be I just unsubscribe from it and I don't have to read it ever again. Also, I don't hesitate to block people the moment I realize they're to trigger emotions and provoke, not to discuss.
Gotta build the community. This is not a bot driven Russian/american Propaganda machine. Its humans. A lot like forums from ye olden days, which were far better.
Real humans aren't posting click bait 2000 times a minute.
I’ve been here for about two years (just on a different instance now). I feel it has actually grown quite a bit since I first started, but the niche communities are dying rapidly while the main communities grow. As someone who participated in a lot of niche communities on Reddit before Apollo went offline, I really feel kinda lost. I really hope people put more effort into those communities and hope those who are still on Reddit while using Lemmy encourage frustrated users to join us here.
I joined a few of the equivalents to my usual subreddits.
No posts in like 3 years on most of them. It's lively enough on the tech and meme pages, but nobody here seems to have the same hobbies as me. Hell even /trees is dead, do none of y'all smoke weed?
Yeah, I really want my friends and family to switch over to Pixfed from instagram/facebook.
I feel like it will be eventually easier to get my close friends to switch over to matrix form discord though. I feel like "real" people dont post on instagram anymore anyways and it's all just influencers and corporations
I have noticed a change. It seems to coincide with the lemmynsfw.com disappearing, but im not attributing it to that, or the timing. I seem to recall another server disappearing around then.
If I remember correctly, the instance owner vanished but left the instance running.
Secondary admins kept the place running until something happened to the instance itself. Something with the database that the admin didn't have access to recover from.
I believe it was that secondary admin that spun up the new instance.
Sorry that's vague but about to get ready for work.
Original admin went AWOL, other admin couldn't access server. Second admin couldn't get ahold of first admin, eventually server went down. Second admin started new NSFW instance.
Then they somehow got everything back (maybe original admin replied to messages), and so the old site went up again as an archive.
I feel like being bored on social media isn't a bad thing, I'm more in and out than I was on reddit and it doesn't consume as much of my time, but I still feel like the same mental itch of news and content is scratch, which for me is a good thing.
I don't mind it being quiet, quite the opposite. Which is another reason why I’ve been filtering the heck out of the Fediverse since I’ve started using it (most of the content shared is mere noise to me).
That being said, I've noticed a somewhat reduced activity without having changed my filtering in any way. That's even more obvious in my small French part of the Fediverse. It just feels a tad quieter.
Is it losing users? Are people just learning to keep quiet? No idea.
It's not great, because I would like to see the Fediverse become a real alternative to those centralized services, even if that means I would have to filter out a lot more noise, but I'm also fine with the idea that the Fediverse may never succeed in becoming one such alternative. Like I’m fine with barely anyone reaching me through MP or through my personal blog anymore. This just seems to not be a thing anymore but it doesn’t prevent me from blogging or to participate in discussions around here ;)
It has been a few years already I have made up my mind that I needed to not rely on anything for my personal use (I'm not talking banks and key services like that, just online services, cloud, social medias, Uber or even my own blog for that matters, little things like that) or to not evcen need a computer at all to keep myself busy.
I don’t mind using them (at least those that do respect my privacy) but I also would not feel devastated if they were to vanish or, but that would obviously be a very unrealistic take, if a law was to pass making it mandatory to use my real name online (which is no secret, I have used it for many years, it’s just that I’ve grown used to being ‘Libb’), or one that would make it mandatory to prove I’m 18+ to be allowed to boot ‘my’ computer... Well, if something that absurd was to ever happen, I would simply stop bothering with those online services and would stop using my suddenly not so ‘personal’ computer anymore.
I would probably would keep using one for work (it’s not that obvious, as I already write longhand) but I would not spend a cent more on online services for my personal usage and would not buy any ‘personal’ device anymore.
But I digress. What was your question? Sure, I’ve noticed some quietness going on too. Maybe we should all try harder than we already do to post more? As an incentive? I doubt it would change much, to be perfectly honest.
People started yelling at each other more than on all the stuff I blocked on reddit, so I only check it every couple weeks now. I check back bc if it ends up 100% negative I'll delete it from my phone, but I still have hope ppl will be kinder
Not sure about Lemmy, but I have noticed an influx in loops.video content recently, especially in my native language. That's probably because Loops is starting to be usable now. There's some YouTubers I already followed and even some local progressive politicians. This year a project named "digital day of independence" started, that educates people every month about how to switch from big tech, which probably also has something to do with it.
It's probably natural - unless some big site like Reddit shits its pants yet again, there's not going to be a major influx of new users. Even if something like that happens, parts of the fediverse are just a hard sell - relentless negativity, poor browsability and discoverability, trolling and bitchiness, and a lot of the content that's left is just... dull.
I'm bored out of my mind too, and even then hanging here is only occasionally worth it.
Mbin has "loud" subscribing, which notifies you on any post added to a community (or posted by a user). I don't know if Lemmy has something similar, but that really worked wonders for me in making the fediverse feel more alive.
I think it’s because I enjoy it more and there’s no algorithm that will make me scroll through the already read messages? I may be wrong but that’s what I think.
Do you filter keywords? I filter a lot of keywords, so now my feed is a lot quieter because of it. It’s also a lot nicer, and I don’t spend as much time on here as I used to.
And don’t worry, you’ll find some other new way to procrastinate. 🤣
yeah it probably has—I honestly like it thought. I sometimes check it and scroll for a bit but it has really helped with the content addition caused by Reddit. I do not go to reddit unless a google search on a technical problem leads me there (only because the archived content is usually where answers are found).
I don’t really feel it, but I think that’s because I’m not on all the time. I’m often busy with real life, so I just come on when I have extra downtime. There’s definitely an ebb and flow. None of that matters to me though. I’m all in for the Fediverse 100%.
I hereby invoke my "English is my 4th language" excuse...
(okay tbh it's not really a good excuse, since I came to the US when I was very young...
But in my defence I hated Reading/Writing classes tho... had self-confidence issues and took years till I felt like I "know" the language... math was always my favorite...)
Im not sure a community will grow if we just isolate and echo chamber. Lol the mod and admins are in on it whether for ego power tripping or perhaps they are being paid controlling opposition idk 15 years ago I would not even have entertained that idea. Its probably just so they can commercialize and sell out like reddit.
Its probably just so they can commercialize and sell out like reddit.
How? Take a look at Reddit stock pancaking (well before Trumps economic fiasco) and it's stagnation. There isn't a guarantee of success with that model, what makes you think a federated one with multiple servers would fare better?
How much revenue do you think they make in ads? What was shithead ceo bonus for the enshitenfication? Capitalism doesn't need to make sense just immediate profit for a few elite.

Not me, but it's important to remember that Lemmy doesn't just feed you an algo. You have to actually post things.

But I digress. What was your question? Sure, I’ve noticed some quietness going on too. Maybe we should all try harder than we already do to post more? As an incentive? I doubt it would change much, to be perfectly honest.

i think the users might actually be slightly increasing but the doomerism is dominating
Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 166d
I find myself scrolling here less because of all the doomerism and bad news. It’s just exhausting to be bombarded with it all day.

The devs seem happy with Lenny not growing and the numbers seem to indicate that Lemmy isn't growing unless brought on by an external source.
HurricaneLiz@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 167d
People started yelling at each other more than on all the stuff I blocked on reddit, so I only check it every couple weeks now. I check back bc if it ends up 100% negative I'll delete it from my phone, but I still have hope ppl will be kinder
Averagejoe@lemmy.org · 7 pts · 168d
Not sure just joined I like the speed more than reddit.
katkit@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 166d
Not sure about Lemmy, but I have noticed an influx in loops.video content recently, especially in my native language. That's probably because Loops is starting to be usable now. There's some YouTubers I already followed and even some local progressive politicians. This year a project named "digital day of independence" started, that educates people every month about how to switch from big tech, which probably also has something to do with it.
Vicinus@piefed.zip · 6 pts · 168d
Looks like Lemmy lost 3.4% of MAU over the last week (Fediverse Activity Post). With severs jumping in and out it might feel more like 7-8%.
amio@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 168d
It's probably natural - unless some big site like Reddit shits its pants yet again, there's not going to be a major influx of new users. Even if something like that happens, parts of the fediverse are just a hard sell - relentless negativity, poor browsability and discoverability, trolling and bitchiness, and a lot of the content that's left is just... dull.
I'm bored out of my mind too, and even then hanging here is only occasionally worth it.

I find the social media (piefed and mastodon) I use are busy enough to keep me entertained, not too busy to make me addictated.
Pamasich@kbin.earth · 4 pts · 167d
Mbin has "loud" subscribing, which notifies you on any post added to a community (or posted by a user). I don't know if Lemmy has something similar, but that really worked wonders for me in making the fediverse feel more alive.

Ohh I actually thought I was the only one, it’s too quiet I kind of like quiet but maybe with time would fun like Reddit
Asfalttikyntaja@sopuli.xyz · 3 pts · 167d
I think it’s because I enjoy it more and there’s no algorithm that will make me scroll through the already read messages? I may be wrong but that’s what I think.
dohpaz42@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 168d
Do you filter keywords? I filter a lot of keywords, so now my feed is a lot quieter because of it. It’s also a lot nicer, and I don’t spend as much time on here as I used to.
And don’t worry, you’ll find some other new way to procrastinate. 🤣
Donebrach@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 167d
yeah it probably has—I honestly like it thought. I sometimes check it and scroll for a bit but it has really helped with the content addition caused by Reddit. I do not go to reddit unless a google search on a technical problem leads me there (only because the archived content is usually where answers are found).
DearMoogle@piefed.social · 2 pts · 168d
I don’t really feel it, but I think that’s because I’m not on all the time. I’m often busy with real life, so I just come on when I have extra downtime. There’s definitely an ebb and flow. None of that matters to me though. I’m all in for the Fediverse 100%.

No. You've likley just hit max consumption and your topic count is at peak.
Jump in on some different comms. I found one with dad jokes that's pretty fun!

It's quiet on gemini protocol too...

The mods are dicks and are pushing agendas to kill the normal things you love.
coalie@piefed.zip · 6 pts · 168d
Maybe you should subscribe to different communities then. Or contact the admins to see if the mods can be replaced.
Pricklesthemagicfish@reddthat.com · -3 pts · 168d
Im not sure a community will grow if we just isolate and echo chamber. Lol the mod and admins are in on it whether for ego power tripping or perhaps they are being paid controlling opposition idk 15 years ago I would not even have entertained that idea. Its probably just so they can commercialize and sell out like reddit.
foodandart@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 168d
How? Take a look at Reddit stock pancaking (well before Trumps economic fiasco) and it's stagnation. There isn't a guarantee of success with that model, what makes you think a federated one with multiple servers would fare better?
My word, that's a take..
Pricklesthemagicfish@reddthat.com · 0 pts · 167d
How much revenue do you think they make in ads? What was shithead ceo bonus for the enshitenfication? Capitalism doesn't need to make sense just immediate profit for a few elite.
coalie@piefed.zip · 2 pts · 168d
That the great thing about decentralization, you could start a new community on a different instance without those mods and admins.
Pricklesthemagicfish@reddthat.com · 0 pts · 167d
And beg for donation like nsfw till you all annoy me enough to ghost? Lol ha im ahead of you.
coalie@piefed.zip · 1 pts · 167d
Why would you need any donations to create a community? It costs nothing, unless you are donating to your home instance.
