Shower beer

lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.world · 20 pts · 148d (1 reply)

This is a good one. Used to work 12h night shifts and that 9:30 am shower beer was heavenly.

StarryPhoenix97@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 147d

I said this a little higher up. Shower beer is one of those things that people who haven't experienced it will look at you like you're mad but Iykyk.

(and you can't JUST get in the shower with a beer. at the very least you should do it after hitting the gym. The physical exhaustion is a key component of the shower beer experience.)

ceenote@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 148d

Funny story: When I was in college, my friends and I went on a ski trip over spring break. Being broke college students, we stayed at someone in the group's brother's apartment, who lived there. It was jam-packed, with 8 of us on the living room floor in sleeping bags. We were all heavy drinkers (college) and did a power hour after the slopes closed on one of the days. For anyone who doesn't know, a power hour is one shot of beer every minute for an hour. It adds up to 90 Oz or 7.5 cans of beer over an hour. Since we were all sweaty from skiing, and there was only 1 shower, everyone was taking turns with the shower beers to keep up with the power hour. I puked right after finishing. Good times.

The "six months of sobriety" beer.

Wait...

Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 148d (8 replies)

Hey I’m just about there! 10-15 drinks every night for so many years. Stopped almost six months ago! I’m gonna have some Champaign for a very special event in my life, and a few beers in the coming months because I have ONE event I am GOING to be hardcore trashed at… the furry con my partner and I go to. Then it’s back to sober for a good while!

Medical stuff tho, if splitting a bottle of Champaign doesn’t treat me well, I’ll have to nix all the other drinking plans and just do the other substances I do at furry con without drinking D: New years sober was totally easy, my wedding anniversary super easy, very few times in the past half year have I been even sort of tempted. But I’m determined to get just skronked at our furry con.

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 3 pts · 148d (4 replies)

Stopped almost six months ago!

Nice. Eventually you realize you never needed it in the first place and wonder why you ever thought you did.

Then it’s back to sober for a good while!

Don't be so sure... (source: someone who's quit drinking several times)

"Quitting's easy. I do it all the time!" It's staying quit that's the challenge, at least until you learn to appreciate sobriety. One sip can turn into a binge. One night of drinking can lead to a week or a month or a year of being wasted. Our brains are wired to want "more".

Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 147d (3 replies)

Thank you and thank you for the very correct advice! Alas, and I know everyone says this, but my situation was a bit different than yer bog standard alcoholic. I was a bog fancy alcoholic! Nah, but really, my partner and I started drinking heavily every evening during COVID cuz it just made everything even more fun. Never to feel better about stuff going badly or to escape or anything, we just liked to drink all the time and talk and play stuff and laugh. Way not healthy to do every day, as evidenced by my big ol health issue it caused! It was temporary and I’m better now, and technically I COULD have been drinking the past couple months… I had a few times I planned to have a few beers, just just decided not to.

I’m definitely never giving it up fully if my body can handle it, I’d for sure kms. But I’m saving it for special stuff in the future, assuming my body actually lets me have some drinks without having the issue I ran into again. If it causes the thing I dealt with again after a few drinks, then I guess I’ll give it up and stick around anyway hahaha.

My partner and I definitely enabled each other. I told them when I was in hospital that they can totally drink around me and I won’t have a problem with that, I won’t be upset, and I can handle any cravings. Turns out, no cravings! I’m very lucky. No withdrawals, no seizures, no DTs. Just some really shit sleep for a couple weeks. My boy has been INCREDIBLE. Went from drinking every day with me to only very occasionally now. We’ve both lost a ton of weight, too! We were never huge huge, but definitely gained a good chunk since 2020 (we were both very petite before then, got fairly big, and we are on our way back to petite again already!)

But yah, I firmly believe I can handle my shit more responsibly now, having felt the full effects of the repercussions it can cause. I believe this because I’ve done every substance out there (except opiates, never touched those until I went to hospital for this issue and they loaded me up with Dilaudid all day every day which was WILD) and even the things folks classically go overboard with, I’ve been responsible with. (A ball of the best blow you can imagine generally would last my partner and me two weeks!) I know it’s time to treat alcohol that way now too, rather than treating it as night-coffee.

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 147d (2 replies)

Whatever you need to tell yourself to rationalize it...

I'm not gonna claim everyone's experience is the same, but I remember my first few times quitting alcohol and what you're saying sounds a lot like the things I told myself. "Of course my situation is different. I'm me!" "I can handle it better in the future." "Life would be unbearable without it."

But at the end of the day, I destroyed my life enough times that I don't feel any desire to watch someone else destroy theirs. I'm not gonna try to talk you out of your decisions. I won't tell you what to do or not do. But I won't encourage it either. So don't try to convince me of what you're ultimately only trying to convince yourself...

Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 147d (1 reply)

Hey, I’m just sharing my own experience. Everyone is different, but lots of people (including… no, especially alcoholics) like to think everyone who drinks is the same, or everyone is like them.

It was fun as hell and I don’t regret it, but my body says I don’t get to do that anymore. I’m not even sure I’ll let me drink occasionally, I have yet to find that out. But I physically cannot drink like I used to, it’d be worse than death.

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 1 pts · 147d

I have the same gripe. I stopped going to AA cause I got tired of some old dudes telling me I'm lying to myself because I didn't identify with their deplorable backstories.

Like, yeah, I've made some mistakes, and I'm not without regrets which pain me every day. But some of the stuff I heard people say they had done made even me clutch my proverbial pearls...

And then they look at me like they think I've done the same shit and just don't have the integrity to admit it.

But like I said, I'm not gonna try telling you how to live your life.

horse@feddit.org · 3 pts · 148d

This is just me, but I just wouldn't man. I drank for years and then quit completely about 6 years ago. To me it wouldn't be worth the risk of falling back into my old ways. I know me and even if it was fine just this once, that would quickly turn into "it was fine last time, so it'll be fine again" and then just creep back up on me. Sure, sometimes I still fancy a beer (or maybe I just still have cravings), but being sober all the time is really not that bad. It's pretty sweet actually.

DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 147d (1 reply)

It's good to have something to look forward to?

Imagine how much more metal it would be to not drink for any reason, even to "celebrate" or because... well, whatever your reason is for being "determined to get just skronked".

Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 147d

I don’t need a fuckin reason, as long as my body can handle it I can just do it because I like it. And no, 5-MeO-DiPT was fucking metal. DOC was metal. DMT is metal the rare rare times we break through. I’ve chilled out a lot in my years but those were insane experiences that showed me things I’ve never seen before. Drinking is just fun to do sometimes.

Looking forward to? Taking a heroic dose of Molly with my best friend partner for life ever twice a year and spending ten hours naked in bed rolling around watching stuff and listening to music and staring into each other’s eyes and linking our brains is my “look toward to”

I’m just gonna drink sometimes, unless my body does the thing again. If it does, I’m never touching it again. If it doesn’t, imma drink occasionally. My reason?

Becuz

Feierabendbier!

That's what happens en-masse in Germany in the early havening.

Everyone goes to a corner shop to buy a bottle of cold beer, enters the metro train, opens the beer bottle and drinks it in the metro on the way home.

Fluffy_Ruffs@lemmy.world · 20 pts · 148d (2 replies)

If this really is a thing, I'm moving to Germany tomorrow

Tuuktuuk@nord.pub · 24 pts · 148d

It is, in some places and to some extent.

Until year 2009, the Berlin transportation's rules said "Disturbing use of alcohol is prohibited in public transportation." ...meaning that non-diaturbing use was allowed. The new rule dropped the word "Disturbing", meaning that the procedure is now no longer allowed.

But, the last time I was in Berlin, a few years ago, I was relieved to see that the tradition still lives on. I bet there are cities where it's still outright allowed to this day! But even where it isn't, it's still being done.

Plus, people do drink their Feierabendbier in parks and benches. And often simply first thing after coming home. But Feierabendbier, the concept of drinking a bottle of beer ASAP after the end of your working day, is still alive and kicking indeed!

synapse1278@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 148d

When I was explaining my German friend that there is no alcohol allowed (technically) on the campus in France, he replied: "What?! I was drinking beer all the time during my studies, why do you even study if you can drink in the morning?!"

I do the exact opposite of that one: the "I no longer drink alcohol but I still love the taste" nonalcoholic beer 😁

those beers are a necessity for grad school. I do a metric fuckton of technical reading and writing. The "Fuck you, braincells, slake your thirst in a sea of alcoholic foam and recall what it's like to be human again" beer hits hard.

i also call it the "If I tilt my head, my brains will pour out my ears beer"

sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 148d

It's that or a mind melting dab rip that immediately transitions me out of the mentality required for all that writing. Isn't it lovely how self destructive higher education can be? Lmao

Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net · 5 pts · 148d

The "I've just spent 14 days in the bush digging holes and staying in a dry camp" beer hits like a fucking freight train. You're exhausted, been craving beer for weeks, and your muscles ache. It's consumed after a hot shower, a shave, and some scrubbing to try and get the dirt out of the fold of your neck. It's all that is cold (but also warming!) bubbly goodness

I don't think I've seen this one specifically, the I've partied all night taking substances and waited till the liquor stores opened to buy beer, for the rest of the day partying.

Only done that one a few times but it's a damn good beer. Mean unless you just want more substances, sometimes but to be honest that's the first good beer I ever had was that beer. I never enjoyed it much before that time. Was a corona of all things heh but been up for over a day so whatever.

More of a honey lager type overall or a good stout, which I have trouble finding beyond Guiness but still got many small breweries to check out. Not that I don't like Guiness but there must be something similar that's not Guiness. Just enjoy new tastes, often more than I enjoy the actual taste heh.

This is a very particular beer, but the “after hauling and securing a boat at 2am with your boss because you’re a tide dependent yard” beer. Those were my favourites.

Seriously though, anytime we had a haul outside of regular working hours we’d all go sit in the back after and have a beer or pop or whatever and shoot the shit. It was nice times.
