"Business-friendly" doesn't really sound like them at all after seeing that John Oliver episode on them attacking tons of other businesses over logos.

As much as I did want to visit one someday just to try a few things I dont think I will he going out of my way if the chance does arise. Also announcing your political allignment should be a death sentance for any company... nobody wants to know this info.

boonhet@sopuli.xyz · 98 pts · 22d (12 replies)

Business friendly just means lower corporate income tax I'm pretty sure.

clanker_victim_555@lemmy.world · 88 pts · 22d (6 replies)

Lower taxes, less regulation, less enforcement, maybe some union busting and general worker suppression.

turtlesareneat@piefed.ca · 16 pts · 21d

Super shitty education system so you have a large pool of cheap labor

Aeao@lemmy.world · -20 pts · 22d (4 replies)

I hear they pay pretty good. I don’t think they have a union problem.

clanker_victim_555@lemmy.world · 35 pts · 22d (1 reply)

It's a menu to choose from. Not a list where everything has to be true for it to apply.

But how brain washed do you have to be to call unions a problem. Unless you own the business. In which case you only have yourself to blame for making the workers angry enough to organize.

Aeao@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 21d

You are reading way too much much into that phrasing. My parents were both in unions and I’m pro union. Relax.

Edit: also I don’t really even like Buc-ee’s. I went once, it was a gas station… I never went again lol.

I just hear they pay well from people I’ve known who worked there.

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 6 pts · 21d (1 reply)

What's "a union problem"?

Signtist@bookwyr.me · 3 pts · 21d

I read "union problem" as "a problem that can be fixed with a union" such as low pay. But yeah, just because your company isn't currently choosing to exploit its workers doesn't mean they won't choose to later - the trick is to prevent them from having the choice in the first place.

A union doesn't have to be an antagonistic force, exclusively beating exploitative companies into submission - it can just be the voice of the workers to speak on equal terms with an attentive employer, working together to grow the business for the benefit of everyone, instead of just those in the executive suite.

earlgrey0@sh.itjust.works · 17 pts · 22d (1 reply)

Or having the government pay for improvements that the business owners would normally have to do.

SwingingTheLamp@piefed.zip · 6 pts · 21d

Indeed, the location in DeForest, Wisconsin is "on hold" because the village can't afford the $17 million highway interchange for it. (No chance of the company helping fund it, nosiree, that's communism or something.)

itsBlorpinTime@feddit.online · 6 pts · 21d

"Business friendly“ means friendly to "my" business. It always has. One company’s business friendly is another person's business hostile.

Rothe@piefed.social · 3 pts · 21d

And fewer worker's rights.

unwarlikeExtortion@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 21d

I'd say it just means socially worse for those folks, because a bad social net clearly corresponds 1:1 with corporate friendliness.

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 35 pts · 22d

Also announcing your political allignment should be a death sentance for any company... nobody wants to know this info.

There's an app called Goods Unite Us which tells you what political parties different companies donate to, and it's searchable.

In case you do want to know that info.

AmbientChaos@sh.itjust.works · 22 pts · 22d (2 replies)

You're not missing out. It's a touristy gift shop for a mascot with convenience store amenities and some mid food. I really don't understand why people love it so much

ceenote@lemmy.world · 65 pts · 22d (12 replies)

After the novelty wears off, I don't understand the appeal of Buc-ee's. It's a shitty convenience store, because it's not quick or convenient, and everything it has that other convenience stores don't is either shitty, overpriced, or both. You want food? Food is higher quality elsewhere, and about as convenient. Clothes? Higher quality and cheaper elsewhere, and about as convenient. The only reason to go there is if you want Buc-ee's branded souvenirs. The bathrooms are nice, I guess, but a decent convenience store like Casey's or QuikTrip has bathrooms just as nice and you'll be in and out much quicker.

BarrelAgedBoredom@lemmy.zip · 43 pts · 22d (2 replies)

Their bathrooms are nice, their food is good by rest stop standards, and their gas is on the cheaper side. It's a solid choice to stop at when you're on the road if you're unsure about nearby options. That's it. I don't get the white suburbanite consumerist cult integrating a gas station into their personality. It's like funko pop people but somehow worse

Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 21d (1 reply)

maybe appeals to truckers, because they often lean conservative, and bucc-ees predominately is in the south more?

GlizzyGobbler@fedinsfw.app · 7 pts · 21d

They're explicitly anti tractor trailer. They have signs plastered all over the entrance. They'll accept anything else though. I've even seen a few campers at one.

chiliedogg@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 22d (4 replies)

Their gas is super cheap compared to everyone else in my area. Like - I paid 2.99 a gallon there yesterday and another place nearby was like 3.79.

I actually don't fully understand why their gas is so cheap. I would think it was to get people in the store, but Bucees doesn't generally have the gas prices posted on signs like everyone else.

Aeao@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 22d (3 replies)

In Florida they post the price. I think it’s the law there because of the shady gas stations near airports over charging

AlligatorBlizzard@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 21d (2 replies)

Wawa put in a gas station near Orlando international airport because their CEO was visiting and got pissed off by the price gouging gas stations nearby, last time I was there the Wawa was still charging reasonable prices and at least one of the other gas stations was still way overpriced (although that might be the gas station in Orlando that doesn't want to be a gas station, they just want to be a convenience store but zoning forces them to keep gas pumps so they price the gas at obscene rates to try to keep people from buying it).

Aeao@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 21d (1 reply)

I’m thinking of the gas station near Outback stake house near the airport. They are crazy with thier prices.

AlligatorBlizzard@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 19d

Okay, I just looked it up, that one is just price gouging the tourists with rental cars. The one that doesn't want to sell gas, at least according to local rumors, is the one on Vineland, I definitely recall it from going to the outlet mall but I don't completely remember where on Vineland it is.

frunch@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 22d

I think another part of the equation is that by the time the novelty wears off, the local competition will likely be wiped out or be less formidable at very least.

Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 21d (1 reply)

It's a good place to stop for decent gas, selections of road trip food you want and especially ample clean bathrooms. Looking slightly behind that, it's worse than a Walmart on the inside with crowds of people shoving through each other for meh-quality fresh food.

TimeNaan@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 20d

America is such a shithole that clean bathrooms at a gas station are a selling point.

You'll have a hard time finding dirty bathrooms in gas stations in the EU.

takeda@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 21d

but a decent convenience store like Casey's or QuikTrip has bathrooms just as nice and you'll be in and out much quicker.

Oh shit, they need to get ready to be sued. Only Buckee is allowed to have clean restrooms.

But seriously, never been there but I see comments like "but their bathrooms are nice". What's so special about their bathrooms? Do they have some high tech gadgets installed like the super expensive Japanese bidets or it is just being clean? And if so, why is that such a big deal?

ShutUpWesley@piefed.zip · 50 pts · 22d

Personally, I'm glad they won't be coming to my state

SpookyBogMonster@lemmy.ml · 34 pts · 22d (16 replies)

Bucee's sucks shit, no doubt

But I'm weary of this liberal notion that red States have nothing to offer the world. What the hell does it mean to "have actual cultural attractions"? Do red States not have culture?

Does Louisana not have a culture? Does the Black Belt, throughout the South not have a distinct culture? Does New Mexico, or Texas not have significant Hispanic population that heavily influence their respective cultures? How about South Dakota's heavy indigenous population? Or Oklahoma? How about Appalachia?

Whiteness in America is, admittedly, not unlike the Borg, wherein all cultural artifacts and language of the many white ethic groups which immigrated here, were assimilated. They gave up the lifeways of their homelands in exchange for a kind of security, and thus for their great grandchildren to be run over by a Ford F250 in a Bucee's parking lot.

But that doesn't mean these places are without rich, deep, and important cultures. The United States is a prisonhouse of nations. Oklahoma, alone, is where we shoved a significant portion of this continents indigenous people. The fact that they're state government is lorded over by the most unhinged gringos America has to offer doesn't make it a place worth ignoring or giving up on. Quite the opposite, in fact.

brian@lemmy.ca · 23 pts · 21d

I took the comment more of an attack on how Bucees itself is paraded as a cultural attraction

Delilah@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 20 pts · 22d (3 replies)

Don’t you fucking lump New Mexico in with Texas. New Mexico may be a big square state but it is a blue state that is holding the line. It is the first state to have universal child care, was a fairly early adopter of LGBT rights, is a reproductive healthcare sanctuary, has a wide variety of interesting cultural traditions and events, and has better chile than anywhere else.

daychilde@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 21d (1 reply)

Texas is difficult. It is its own thing in many ways, and fiercely so. But it's also large. El Paso is definitely southwestern. Beaumont is definitely Southern. DFW would identify as Texas first, definitely not Southern and definitely not Southwestern.

Soggy@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 21d

Part of the Confederacy, part of The South. Fuck em.

Zedd_Prophecy@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 21d

It's not so much that -as a Connecticut Yankee that moved into the south. The south is a wonderful place rich with history, great wilderness, and a fairly decent people that still value hospitality. It's also full of sparsely filled main streets and ghost towns with only 2 Dollar Generals and a host of mom and pop stores that have gone out of business. This person is trying to convey this difference and is an inarticulate asshat. I'll tell you this - I can't get good healthcare but I can get a smoked tenderloin biscuit at 6 places on the way to work that puts fast food to shame. It is also not very healthy. I no longer care.

Fluffy_Ruffs@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 21d (1 reply)

You raise a great point. The culture is there and blue states don't inherently have a greater inventory, per se. In response to the OP, would it be fair to say blue states celebrate and display that culture versus red states?

SpookyBogMonster@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 21d

I would say yes? But it's a hesitant yes. For example, New York City is in a blue state, and is very proud of showing off its diverse cultural fabric.

But even in the bluest of states, the problems of colonialism and the United State's fraught [understatement of the millennia] relationships with the indigenous peoples of this continent still persist.

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 21d

Yeah, I'm sad that as a queer person I feel unsafe visiting the deep south because I'd love to see more of the country, especially those areas you discuss. When I lived in Kentucky I developed a complex relationship with Appalachia that includes some love for it.

Fundamentally, I also just think it's tactically foolish to say that we don't want the cultures of red states to join us on the left. We don't dislike these places for the things worth loving about them like their food, their general ways of doing things, etc. We would gladly stand side by side with an inclusive, labor protecting Mississippi. Even Texas which is as annoying as California would be welcome in a blue coalition without having to give up its Texaseyness

ALoafOfBread@lemmy.ml · 29 pts · 22d

Bucees sucks. I hate going into them. There are 10000 gas pumps that are always occupied and trying to get around the parking lot is a hazard. Inside is even worse with 1,000,000 lumen fluorescent lights and being packed full of gawking people.

My first and last experience with one of these places was many years ago. I didn't know it was anything special, just assumed it was yet another random truck stop gas station deal and I needed to stop for gas while on a long trip.

BIG MISTAKE

The customers themselves driving through the massive parking lot, it was like Mad Fucking Max, and that was enough to let me know that I needed to move on to some place else and never go back. It was literal non-stop absolutely bat shit insane drivers, running stop signs, laying hands on their horns and just letting it blare for a minute+ because a pedestrian dared cross through a crosswalk. People driving every which way down the lanes as though it was all one way or something. Squealing tires because people are going several times faster than the posted speed limit and then have to suddenly slam on brakes ... IN A FUCKING PARKING LOT.

NEVER AGAIN

I suppose learning this bullshit philosophy of the owners / management it all sort of comes together and makes sense. The worst kind of people as customers, the worst kind of people running it.

I remember when Buc-ees came to my state and everyone went “Hell, yeah, I’ll work at a gas station for $22/hr!” Pretty soon, word got around that you’re not even supposed to sit on your breaks. The people enthusiastically screaming “Fresh brisket on the board!!” Rapidly gave way to a tone that said “I am contractually obligated to say ‘Fresh brisket on the board’ at an at least mildly elevated volume.”

Still, I’m surprised by this story. The pay made a hell of a first impression, and the sitting thing made me think some kind of weird religious kink, but overtly political messaging was not something I expected. Look, “amenities” for us is bathroom doors that don’t allow someone to watch you poop (for free). We don’t even hope for clean. Perhaps an interesting filth that we can record and show our friends.

At least in my experience, it’s just a novelty, like a mall with a roller coaster inside. I have a Bucc-ees full body swimsuit because my wife looked at them and physically recoiled because of how tacky they are (I went back alone to get one and surprised her when we went swimming). They have branded 1/4 lb “chocolate” disks with the horrible skin-beaver imprinted on them. They sell “beaver nuggets” that are something like Corn Pops and Cheetos had a baby, but drier. They have a jerky counter (somehow more expensive than regular jerky, never tried it), a fudge counter (lots of flavors, pretty sure I tried it, but it left no impression), and grab and go barbecue sandwiches (the brisket’s more fat than meat, but the rest are decent). I have no complaints about the hot (temperature) candied nuts. I actually don’t think I can get those anywhere else nearby. Then there’s a kitschy home goods section and a clothing department that sells things with the skin-beaver printed on them. That’s about it.

It’s a bit like Disney opened a gas station, but worse (They should. Some people would kill for access to Dole Whip). It was absolutely packed at first, but not now, as far as I can tell. I think the rarity is the selling point, and people will stop caring as they expand.

Whatever, Buc. Fuck you too.

I would say they should go, the blue states then only gets ethical companies and we will see where people want to liveXD

SnarkoPolo@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 22d

I would have no reason to walk into a Bucees. FDJT

And here I thought the gas station in Ely Nevada was bad, at least that one was just packed because of morning rush. I was probably too deranged by that point to appreciate the chaos though, I had been driving for like 15 hours by that point.

SethTaylor@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 21d

Ooooh, now that Last Week Tonight episode makes so much sense

Alwaysnownevernotme@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 21d

Never been to a buckeys. Don't see a reason to ever visit one. Good marketing campaign.

Eryn6844@piefed.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 21d (3 replies)

sigh no brisket for me. keep your jerky too.

Hominine@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 21d

The jerky went to shit anyway. They used to have real packaged jerky, but now it is the "Jack Links" pseudo-jerky meat snack that is strangely moist and no longer the real deal. No idea if the stuff behind the counter is any better as I stopped feeding this particular beast some time ago.

ClownStatue@piefed.social · 1 pts · 21d

Plenty of better brisket elsewhere. Jerky too. About the only thing they have that I consider exclusive is buc-cee bites. Those are admittedly pretty addictive if you like that flavor (and I do), but I’m not going to miss them.

cdf12345@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 21d

Wait you hear about how they treat their employees

motruck@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 21d

I guess bucees doesn't want my money then.

takeda@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 21d (2 replies)

As someone in a blue state, am I missing anything from then not being here?

lps2@lemmy.ml · 10 pts · 21d

Have you ever walked into a gas station and thought, "man, I really wish this was the size of a Walmart and filled with cheap trinkets ala FiveBelow but beaver themed, had children running everywhere, and mediocre bbq"?

mbp@slrpnk.net · 1 pts · 21d

They do have amazing bathrooms but it seems I never time it right.

nullspace@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 21d

If you see a Buc-ees it means the only thing worth stopping for is taking a shit.

thatkomputerkat@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 21d

Good, don’t need those in WA. lawsuit happy fucks.

Ryanmiller70@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 21d

What do you mean? My red state has a giant horseshoe and.....a couple theme parks I think?

JasonDJ@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 21d

They still use styrofoam cups? We don't want them.

DarkFuture@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 21d

The fuck is a Buc-ee's? Is it where you elope with your sibling/cousin?

And what kind of cousin fucking business owner openly states they won't expand their business?

Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world · -32 pts · 21d (28 replies)

Love buc-ees I'm not even going to lie about it.

I'm getting old and I'm getting tired of pretending like eating gruel all day on the left is how things are suppose to be. When I visit america and I stop at a buc-ees everyone digs it. Hate to see this from their company but I also hate to see the left deny how great convenience is. When I was younger I didn't get why people turn to the right as they get older. I thought maybe it was they get money or senile or something. As I get older I think it's the slow realization that people on the left are truly full of shit. Being on the left is constantly being fed a shit sandwich and being told it's for your own good. And I get the irony here about shit sandwiches and buc-ees. God fucking me if that shitty roast beef slop isn't delicious after 16 hrs of driving.

You all hate these companies then fucking do something. Don't just try to create yet another moral barrier and culture point where you have to or not to be a good leftie. I hadn't eating chick fil a in ever. Yesterday I went and god damn was it good. But i"m just tired of living this life where every option in life is against moral or ethics and it's is piling up while nothing on the left happens. Nobody is starting business or actually doing anything beyond standing in streets. Go out and culture jam them. Steal their logo. Put it on everything in a world where advertising is a billion dollar business be the anti marketing to their billion dollar business. But just stop finding things to force the rest of us to eat this leftist moral slop. Just be honest.

What the actual fucking "old man yells at cloud" shit did I just read?

Erna_muse@lemmy.zip · 16 pts · 21d (2 replies)

You never actually explained what the left was being dishonest about.

In general what we're doing is performing negatives. It might seem uncomfortable but to not be complicit with destructive behaviors is a virtue. It's not more complicated than don't smoke, don't litter, don't hang out with jeffery epstein.

PhoenixDog@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 21d (1 reply)

Also, what the fuck does being on the left have to do with a fucking gas station?

This guy is an idiot.

DeLacue@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 21d

To explain; they think any form of consequences for bad behaviour is cancel culture and cancel culture is a purely left thing and is evil and wrong because freedom of speech and because it's something the left does. So anyone who advocates for consequences for a company's actions must be a leftist. It's a very common thing with American right wing propaganda. I have seen it way too often.

ReptilianCleric@lemmy.zip · 14 pts · 21d (2 replies)

So...you love buc-ees because you're a fucking idiot. Got it.

ugandan_airways@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 21d

Guarantee you they are a fat fuck, too. Someone who thinks sugar makes food “good.” Those fuckers love Buccee’s so much they put goddamn bumper stickers on their cars for them.

Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world · -2 pts · 20d

You're an idiot because you hate bucees

Hobo@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 21d (7 replies)

Ah yes the classic "I can't shop at a shitty gas station mall so I think brown kids should be put in cages." argument. It's a bold strategy, Cotton, lets see if pays off on one of the most leftest forums on the internet.

Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 20d (6 replies)

This isn't a leftist forum. It's just brainwashed Chinese propaganda mixed in with people who hated everything about reddit except for the moderation.

Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 7d (1 reply)

Don't need to. You're here and accepting of what this is. They tells me enough. You accepted the most corporate controlling tools of bigger social media sites and distilled them down to this site which was suppose to be a way to fight back and instead you just recreated the bullshit so it is ready for corporate take over

commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 7d

do you know how I know that you have no idea what site I'm on?

abuttandahalf@lemmy.ml · 10 pts · 21d

Grade A amerifat fascist posting. Yes, Americans are right wing because they like the insane consumption that imperialism allows them. You're so fucking hedonistic you think getting to gorge on food justifies murder.

Hominine@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 21d

These fuckers tried to charge me to fill a water bottle after gassing up; I vowed to never stop in one again.
Honestly, you can take a bite out of my ass.

kestrel7_7@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 21d (1 reply)

So this is a thread about how Buc-ee’s will never exist in the state I live in because we’re too woke or something. And you think leftists are the peoblem here? Buddy, I’m not boycotting Buckaroo Banzai’s over here, they’re boycotting me. You’ve gotten this completely twisted.

Also, there’s no evidence that people get more conservative as they get older.

Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 20d

Its more about how you as leftist have given up all your power to the point that successful people dunk on you without worry about consequences and all you have to show for it is being miserable. It's not like you're the leftist of decades ago innovating anything. There's no counter culture that wasn't something that you stole from the 70s. I'm going to enjoy some steak, drive my truck and fill up at bucees while grabbing some good food. You can drive around being miserable until you realize the same thing. Being a leftist today is being a miser all day. You give up power. You fail at organizing and it's to the point that a stores who sell to the public feel its fine to literally say, yea fuck their whole state because what are they going to do. But hate me instead of asking yourselves why you don't have power

hankmurphy@lemmus.org · 4 pts · 21d

You hate to see the left deny how great convenience is? What does that even mean?

zbyte64@awful.systems · 3 pts · 21d (4 replies)

Your comment history is fun. You say the left is too easy on people yet I see all these people giving you a hard time for this post. Care to explain how you resolve that cognitive dissonance to us?

Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 19d (3 replies)

Votes online don't matter 😆

When are you guys going to understand that.

zbyte64@awful.systems · 1 pts · 19d (2 replies)

I didn't even bother down voting you my dude. You're barking up the wrong tree to avoid hearing people call you out.

Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 17d (1 reply)

You don't need to my dude. Votes were to remove the need for mods which instead you people embraced and now use for some imaginary system of digital capital?? Like when a kid an old school cash register that is so old it no longer has an value. You guys just smash those buttons like it's modern activism and call it a day. You don't need to my dude.

zbyte64@awful.systems · 1 pts · 17d

So I don't need to engage in the behavior you deride in order to be lumped into a group you define by that behavior. Did I get that right? Seems like an effective way to avoid challenging ideas, but boy are you telling on yourself.

God fucking me if that shitty roast beef slop isn’t delicious after 16 hrs of driving.

It must be the boot polish aftertaste from your previous oral adventure that really pushes the flavor over the edge.

Like Chicken 'n' Waffles... Buc's Beef and Fasc Footware must be a strange yet oddly familiar culinary pairing that you just have to try before you can understand.
