For anybody that doubts this, I looked it up. Some polls are more in the 55%-60% range, but there are also these:
Reuters/Ipsos (August 21–24): 65% disapprove and 33% approve.
American Research Group (August 15–19): 66% disapprove and 30% approve.
I looked into it because I suspected it was more like 35% approve, 50% disapprove, leaving 15% fucking clueless somehow.
I used to follow the Gallup polls for this, because of the long time series and general reputability. But then it turned out they do not have a spine. Since then I always look at the aggregated results at https://www.natesilver.net/p/trump-approval-ratings-nate-silver-bulletin . Every poll has a significant margin of error (depending on sample size) and bias (depending on methodology), so aggregating them is generally a good idea.
Realclearpolitics is worse than Nate Silver. They’re openly conservative and manipulate their polling average by accepting only GOP internals not dem ones, which means their averages are super biased GOP.
People compare the two and Trump looks bad in comparison and he hates that.
I've seen more the opposite. Trump sees Mamdani as popular and keeps trying to hitch a wagon to his star. He did a congratulatory call, gave Mamdani a few concessions coming into office, and even invited him to the WH for a photo op.

here's a map from a few weeks ago of Mamdani's approval ratings. All the wealthy areas have red dissapproval ratings. Something I like to note is the red rectangle just off Central Park is Epstein Alley, the area where the richest assholes own property.
Manhattan is almsot all green except for a sliver on 5th Avenue near Central Park. That's the priciest area. Most of the rest of the borough is pretty pricey. even Harlem apartments are getting expensive, now that it's being gentrified.
Most of the red areas aren't particularly pricey and certainly aren't considered high class or exclusive.
The bright red area all the way at the bottom left is the South Shore of Staten Island.
I once met a woman who taught Art History at Staten Island College. She told me that many of her students had never made the trip into Manhattan to visit the Metropolitan Museum, one of the top museums in the world.
For additional context, it’s maybe an hour trip by train feom SI (including a fun ferry ride) and admission is free for Ny’ers at The Met. (Natural history museum too!)
Look for and listen to the Revisionist History: The Staten Island Problem podcast series. It’s really interesting and even points out how Wu Tang Clan rose from that weird island. Plus it seems to have foretold our current stupid politics to a degree.

So just the other day I learned where the term redneck came from and I think you may want to go read about it because we are all misappropriating a term originally meant for class/labor solidarity with that of white trash that fuck their siblings and have a combined IQ that if it were an age not high enough to vote.
I grew up with white trash rednecks. Lived with them too. I don't care what the original definition is. Language changes, and it isn't being used that way anymore.
About a month ago, a poll showed that about 40% of Dems were aligning with the DemSocs. A couple of weeks ago, a new poll showed it was up to about 60%.
The louder the Corpo-Establishment Dems scream about the DemSocs, the stronger they get.
Trumps support rate is around 33% in most polls, so it seems there's a 30-35% of the population who just hate good things and support shitty evil instead.
I'm a New Yorker, so let me give you my perspective.
Donald Trump fucked over everyone in New York. He called for the lynching of some young Black men, and then refused to admit he was wrong when they were all exonerated. He pissed off the Manhattan elites when he razed a famous landmark after promising to preserve it. He enraged the art world when he built an ugly hotel in SoHo. He personally destroyed a great summer football league. He was seen eating pizza with a knife and fork.
There will always be a portion of the population that goes fascist during economic decay, the sort of decay that is inevitable with capitalism. They will be throughly propagandized and may never wake up and see the light of reason. A liberal democracy cannot stop a determined fascist movement with capitalist backing with conventional means. They will use and abuse existing political levers to gain total power.
The only thing that will stop them is turning the tables on them via mass resistance of those who have gained class consciousness. They will need to be defeated and suppressed, and barred from having any further political power or platform to spread their toxic ideas.
The 0.5% who have a pied-Ă -terre worth over $5 million, and the 30.5% who are just temporarily cash-constrained but surely will be buying a pied-Ă -terre worth over $5 million in the very near future.
Except it's only for NYC, for the rest of the state his approval ratings are actually going down. That's common though. Urban liberal areas usually think positively of liberal politicians, but when you add in rural areas, their approval ratings drop dramtically. Basically nothing has changed, even with someone as well liked as Mamdani.
Yes, we all know that he is the mayor of NYC, not the governor of NY. However the mayor of NYC is often seen as wielding as much power as the governor, hence why there are always comparisons, and they are valid when looking at larger approval ratings of policies. If this was some DSA mayor of a small city in the middle of nowhere, there wouldn't even be a news story about it. Hell, there are many very liberal mayors in California, and they are hardly talked about, for the exact same reason.
Ok but why should he care about people who are literally not his constituents. Imo his approval rating with irrelevant people going down is a good sign: it means the mayor of NYC is actually paying attention and caring about NYC for once.
That wouldn't be a cool rule. To start, polls are subjective, typically trash, and we (society as a whole) generally lack the depth to understand methodologies enough to gauge validity.
And if they were somehow an objective measure, billionaires would then buy every polling agency and just announce that trump is perpetually polling at 125% with vote farms and bot. And the establishment dems would say , "Well, we don't like it, but that is what the poll says, so... But we're really going to watch him close though"

I sincerely doubt that most NYC residents give a rat's ass about what other residents of their state think about the city's mayor.
It's a big talking point. Mayor of NYC is basically seen as wielding equivalent power to the state governor, so it's a popular comparison, and shows that Memdani's politics which work well for a urban liberal city don't scale to state wide policies, which is quite common in the US. The real power and show that Dem politics are changing is if Memdani's approval increases state wide and more DSA members win elections across the US in November. It seems like in very strong Dem districts this is possible, but in toss up, or weaker Dem districts, the centrists Dems are the ones that have been winning primaries.

It doesn't show that at all. That's like polling people in Florida about Mamdani and using it to claim that "his policies wouldn't scale well to the country." That's utter nonsense.
Regardless of if he's "seen as" wielding equivalent power to the governor, he factually, objectively, does not have the power to govern NY outside of the city. Therefore, nobody outside of the city is actually experiencing his policies firsthand.
Even then, a good policy can sometimes take time to actually produce results. To actually be able to claim his policies "don't scale well" to the state level, we would first have to see what he would actually propose if he were governing at a state level, and then we would have to evaluate not only whether those policies are popular but whether they produce results. It's complete and utter nonsense, absurdly premature to draw conclusions based off what some random person he's not governing or necessarily trying to win over thinks of him, which is just based on whatever the media they consume says.
Yeah, it's a big talking point, but it doesn't make it any less weird. It's not his job or his responsibility, and the biggest problem is like you said - He's SEEN as wielding equivalent power. He's doing a good job as mayor because he's NOT trying to appeal to the rest of the state and is focusing on directly improving the lives of the people in NYC, as it should be.
Otherwise, why stop the polling at the state level? Why not poll all of New England? Why not poll Canada? They're just as close by and have the exact same level of influence over and from him.
You know during the campaign my only exposure to the guy were clips of him absolutely devastating Cuomo so I am sort of surprised now when I see clips and he looks so happy and friendly

There was a headline the other day from a major outlet (NYT or WSJ or something) along the lines of "Nearly 40 percent of New Yorkers don't support Democratic Socialism".
I'm mocking the corporate-owned media's flailing attempts to make progressive policies seem unpopular.

The popularity surge is not for want of trying from the Post, which publishes multiple pieces on the mayor every day. Except it's only for NYC, for the rest of the state his approval ratings are actually going down. That's common though. Urban liberal areas usually think positively of liberal politicians, but when you add in rural areas, their approval ratings drop dramtically. Basically nothing has changed, even with someone as well liked as Mamdani.

Yes, we all know that he is the mayor of NYC, not the governor of NY. However the mayor of NYC is often seen as wielding as much power as the governor, hence why there are always comparisons, and they are valid when looking at larger approval ratings of policies. If this was some DSA mayor of a small city in the middle of nowhere, there wouldn't even be a news story about it. Hell, there are many very liberal mayors in California, and they are hardly talked about, for the exact same reason.

That wouldn't be a cool rule. To start, polls are subjective, typically trash, and we (society as a whole) generally lack the depth to understand methodologies enough to gauge validity.
And if they were somehow an objective measure, billionaires would then buy every polling agency and just announce that trump is perpetually polling at 125% with vote farms and bot. And the establishment dems would say , "Well, we don't like it, but that is what the poll says, so... But we're really going to watch him close though"

It's interesting to see the lengths that established media are going to in order to "both sides" this political opinion that is obviously not a 50/50 split.
The headline is, "Mayor Mamdani finds favor in New York City, but struggles with state."
Has any other New York mayor ever had this kind of approval rating? Maybe Giuliano immediately after 9/11 ...
I sincerely doubt that most NYC residents give a rat's ass about what other residents of their state think about the city's mayor.

It's a big talking point. Mayor of NYC is basically seen as wielding equivalent power to the state governor, so it's a popular comparison, and shows that Memdani's politics which work well for a urban liberal city don't scale to state wide policies, which is quite common in the US. The real power and show that Dem politics are changing is if Memdani's approval increases state wide and more DSA members win elections across the US in November. It seems like in very strong Dem districts this is possible, but in toss up, or weaker Dem districts, the centrists Dems are the ones that have been winning primaries.

It doesn't show that at all. That's like polling people in Florida about Mamdani and using it to claim that "his policies wouldn't scale well to the country." That's utter nonsense.
Regardless of if he's "seen as" wielding equivalent power to the governor, he factually, objectively, does not have the power to govern NY outside of the city. Therefore, nobody outside of the city is actually experiencing his policies firsthand.
Even then, a good policy can sometimes take time to actually produce results. To actually be able to claim his policies "don't scale well" to the state level, we would first have to see what he would actually propose if he were governing at a state level, and then we would have to evaluate not only whether those policies are popular but whether they produce results. It's complete and utter nonsense, absurdly premature to draw conclusions based off what some random person he's not governing or necessarily trying to win over thinks of him, which is just based on whatever the media they consume says.

Yeah, it's a big talking point, but it doesn't make it any less weird. It's not his job or his responsibility, and the biggest problem is like you said - He's SEEN as wielding equivalent power. He's doing a good job as mayor because he's NOT trying to appeal to the rest of the state and is focusing on directly improving the lives of the people in NYC, as it should be.
Otherwise, why stop the polling at the state level? Why not poll all of New England? Why not poll Canada? They're just as close by and have the exact same level of influence over and from him.
