I'm not buying it because Rockstar and Take Two are shitty greedy assholes.

It’s mostly take two. Not rockstar. yes rockstar have sacked lotsa people but the people who made the decisions are basically peons of take two. All the credit goes to take two imo.

echodot@feddit.uk · 6 pts · 4d

It's Rockstar if they really care they could put their foot down, they have the cred to get whatever they want.

rabber@lemmy.ca · 125 pts · 5d (22 replies)

looks good but i'm not buying it lol

stupid penalty for making me wait for PC release is that i will steal the game

guyoverthere123@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 80 pts · 5d (4 replies)

Piracy isn't stealing.

burido@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 5d (2 replies)

Then it isn't piracy right? It's just downloading software

esc@piefed.social · 17 pts · 5d (1 reply)

That's right.

DaveyRocket@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 5d

But that means that poor people get to enjoy things too? Do price tags mean nothing to you?! Soon they’ll think they can do other things like politics and law, will anyone think of the nepo-babies?

dmir@gehirneimer.de · 6 pts · 5d

Someone named rabber could be talking about more dire measures than piracy when referring to stealing. Never know.

LiveLM@lemmy.zip · 12 pts · 5d (2 replies)

I wonder what the DRM situation will be like.
Will they have some hopped up version of Arxan that's gonna be super hard to crack?
Or is the PC Release delay good enough that they aren't particularly worried about piracy?

Of course given the popularity and antecipation I'm sure there will be all forms of groups trying to take a stab at it, but I still wonder how it'll go down.

zikzak025@lemmy.world · 37 pts · 5d (1 reply)

The game won't run without an armed agent pointing a gun at your head who will pull the trigger if you ever start enjoying it the wrong way.

This game is what's finally going to push me upgrade my 3060Ti in a few years but... I'm not exactly hopeful on there being anything to upgrade to. Would prefer to skip nvidia and amd has decided to abandon the high end market but if I'm upgrading, I'd like to go up a tier or two, not just a few generations. I want to be blown away by the card that's going to have to last me the next 5-10 years.

I'm also guessing there won't be a new GPU generation out next year.

I've literally only just got a pc capable of playing cyberpunk so thank you for the mod list. - I won't dare, I never live down the mocking from my girlfriend.

I wonder if that's why Rockstar haven't put in female playable characters from now. I don't think there was any in Ballad Of Gay Tony, I know there wasn't in IV main game.

boonhet@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 3d

TBoGT was Luis, who was pretty much what VI's male protag (Jason?) should've been. He actually had a personality other than just being the big badass guy.

I suspect the reason they haven't had female protagonists before is just pure male defaultism rampant in the gaming industry. Gamers would've made a ton of noise in the past. Otherwise, a game with Catalina as the protagonist could've been really interesting.

IckabodKobain@feddit.online · 25 pts · 5d (5 replies)

Okay after watching this video, I figured out what the deal is with this game I don't connect with: Netflix. They all wanna do their games now like it's a Netflix show. Not just Rockstar, but all of the major companies.

Graphically... it looks great. If what we're seeing isn't just all post-effects they slapped onto the video.

The dudes voice I don't like. Apparently I'm not the only person judging by some of the comments I've read heh. He just sounds like a doofus white guy. But an unfunny one at that! And they're somehow making his voice sound Deeper? Like if 1990s, Point Break, Keanue had a deeper voice I guess is what they are going for? The problem like some others have pointed out is that the voice doesn't match what we're seeing as the Model.

Eh. Anyways whatever. I'm old. I prefer the old school goofy cartoon GTAs over this Netflix Amazon Movie shit they put out now. I'm not big on Hyper Realism these days. Kind of over it really. That's just me though.

lemmelemmy@feddit.org · 1 pts · 4d (4 replies)

It says captured on ps5 at the very end

FatVegan@leminal.space · 5 pts · 4d (3 replies)

And why would they lie?

echodot@feddit.uk · 3 pts · 4d (2 replies)

Well it's releasing on the PS5 so it would be pretty dumb if it doesn't actually work on the PS5. Anyway what the mostly showed was cut scenes and they are easy to optimize because anything that's literally not on screen can just be unloaded.

caseofthematts@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 4d (1 reply)

I remember when the very first teaser came out for this and people were going wild. I asked in a streamers chat (first mistake) if there was any actual in-game gameplay footage or it was just a CGI/cutscene and the streamer chewed me out lol. "Let people be excited about things!"

echodot@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 4d

To be clear there is a difference between pre-rendered cut scenes and in game cut scenes. I'm pretty sure everything we saw, and have seen so far, has all been in game cut scenes.

But still I suspect that the game won't be the same quality out of cutscenes as it is in cut scenes. Most games actually have two different character models depending on if you're using it for gameplay or cut scenes, and it's how GTA IV did it.

The absurd hype is going to come back to bite R* in the ass

Going to break records. Don't think Rockstar is going to have any problems here.

echodot@feddit.uk · 3 pts · 4d (2 replies)

I get some of the very well deserved hate for Rockstar but come on, it's one of the best looking games this year, and the fact it looks like that on, an apparently baseline, PS5 is nuts.

In a few years when they port it to PC and we we can throw it at a high end graphics card, it's going to look like real life. And it's clear that there is more then just graphics here.

Mind you, I have no idea how they are going to handle the online mode as GTAO was terrible. I hope they do better with that.

bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de · 1 pts · 4d (1 reply)

This wasn't meant as either criticism or high praise. It looks like a GTA game is supposed to. I mean gameplay-wise. This is good for people who like GTA and anyone else won't care. The game will probably be fun and have tons of stuff and minigames to play.

echodot@feddit.uk · 2 pts · 4d

Well it would be difficult for it to look like any other game it's not like they're going to add puzzle elements. But it does seem to be a bit more realistic, it looks like you won't be able to just shoot the cops and then go hide underground in the train network, so that's a fairly major departure from traditional gameplay.

craftrabbit@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 5d

Sure does look a hell of a lot like GTA

ModernRisk@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 22 pts · 5d (4 replies)

Seems like a good game but the expensive price plus the fact it will be 30FPS on launch is a no-go for me. Will wait for PC release (if that ever comes?). Got enough backlog games anyway.

The PC release will happen. It's the largest platform for this type of game now.

Same discussion as it was with RDR1.

Then 13 years passed.

zikzak025@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 5d

I guess in that game's case, it was developed at a satellite studio who thought their spaghetti western game needed spaghetti code to match.

Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 4d

IMO RDR1 doesnt count for that argument.
But yes. The money grabbers got greedy enough to sell it to PC players :p

boonhet@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 4d

RDR1 was a special case, San Diego didn't port their previous few games either which is why we don't have Midnight Club LA on PC for example.

GTA is too big. It's guaranteed extra sales for a game they already have. Same with RDR2, it was heaps more popular than the first (which itself was more popular than expected I guess) so leaving it console exclusive was never really on the table.

zikzak025@lemmy.world · 20 pts · 5d (1 reply)

I wouldn't even say alleged, it was very blatant. An employment tribunal has already ruled against them and the case goes to full trial next month.

CountVlad47@feddit.org · 2 pts · 5d

Yeah, I only said 'alleged' because I haven't been following it that closely and am not familiar with the latest details. Last time I saw anything about it Rockstar looked guilty as hell.

taiyang@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 5d

Kudos to you for posting for the sake of denying them. I won't watch because I'd rather keep blind; I actually really enjoyed GTAV (once it was on PC and sold for next to nothing lol) and I'll probably get this several years after release the same way. I'm remarkably good at avoiding spoilers for unreasonable amounts of time (e.g. I found out the cake was a lie a decade after Portal released, lol).

Also fyi, GTA games are generally good and you can tell the writers and world builders had fun with it despite their shit management. It's not a bad idea to pirate or buy at a strict discount to at least see the story they created. Plus, I'm an LA native and GTAV is practically a documentary!

dan1101@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 5d (4 replies)

zikzak025@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 5d

Quite possibly. The other side of the coin though is that I'm sure Netflix wanted the deal to pull in new subscribers, so if options to watch it elsewhere prevent that from happening, that could still be a win.

DarkCloud@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 5d (3 replies)

Characters, location, even scenarios seem generic as fuck. Lacking the spicy humor that GTA5 had.

Seems like the writers have done the classic error of not endearing anyone to the player. I'm not drawn to or interested in finding out anything more about them.

CosmoNova@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 5d (1 reply)

Didn‘t they fire the main writer for the games up until GTA5 or RDR2 almost a decade ago? The guy then went on to create his own studio and develop some crypto slop that is regarded as the worst game that released that year.

ripcord@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 5d

Crypto...game?

slaacaa@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 4d

It’s like I’m taking crazy pills.

3 months from release we get a trailer with some gameplay, and it doesn’t look exciting. The movement during the shooting looks clunky as fuck, and reminds me of the stick-to-cover games of late 2000s.

I played all GTAs and liked both RDRs, but this just doesn’t pull me in. Graphics are great and I’m sure we have a huge map with lots of stuff to do, but the gameplay and mechanics seem dated.

qarbone@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 5d (13 replies)

Fuck. Unfortunately looks really good.

R* feels like prime, 2009 Apple: fucking insufferable but unfortunately make a strong product, if overpriced.

tobz619@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 5d (2 replies)

I mean sure they've had money and time than God to make it, but boy did it look like they spent it well. The big thing for me is the real time lighting, a lot of lights are drawing shadows and a lot of objects are self-shadowing on each light... it's crazy!

Karmatrine@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 5d (1 reply)

I'm not particularly a fan of GTA series. However did completed every one of them since GTA III. My issue with GTA VI trailer though is that it looks too realistic, and not really well stylized. It doesn't ring the vibe of Vice City. And it doesn't look catchy for my eye. Would love to be proven wrong after release (More good games to complete). I can acknowledge that lighting tech is impressive. Animations are good. And environment is detailed. But atm it looks soulless for me comparing it even to the same GTA V. And story wise tracking 3 doofuses idiotic plans was actually fan. Here I don't feel anything remotely special atm. Might be a damn good sandbox. But will it be the actual successor amongst the series games is under the question.

boonhet@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 3d

I suspect two things:

The world will be more immersive and less soulless once we can actually navigate it. It's also the first time there's been a swamp in GTA which is cool.

Lucia will be by far the better protagonist. The other one seems poorly written and with a voice completely mismatching the character model. I think Lucia will have more depth and her voice is more pleasant.

KC_Royalz@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 5d (5 replies)

It looks amazing everything about it is incredible. Except Jason's voice. It's so immersion breaking I can't put my finger on it. It's not that it just lacks emotion, Arthur's character in RDR2 lacked emotion most of the time. And he's a great character

This is something else entirely. It distracted me during the entire reveal and I found myself getting more annoyed with it as the trailer went. It sounds filtered and muffled like he was talking into a box fan. During recording

iamthetot@piefed.ca · 6 pts · 5d

His voice acting was genuinely the only thing that turned me off the game haha.

Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 4 pts · 5d (3 replies)

I actually agree with you. I was browsing the comments and during the first few minutes I was thinking "ah, they're exaggerating", but it really did get worse and worse. Really puts me off as well.

KC_Royalz@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 5d (2 replies)

It sounds like it's being ran through one of those anonymous voice filters while the person saying the lines is trying to fake a deep voice.

It doesn't fit the character model whatsoever. I truly hate it. Do we even know who's doing the voice yet? Maybe rockstar is filtering it so we can't identify it yet I don't know. If it's filtered great that's not what we will be hearing. If it's not. Then it's a major problem

Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 6 pts · 5d (1 reply)

It's bizarre too because every other voice was excellent, as is the usual case for R*.

KC_Royalz@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 5d

Yes they were. The pistols shot in the hallway sounded amazing and then sounded different in the open which was even better

Blackmist@feddit.uk · 5 pts · 5d

I don't think anybody does detail quite like Rockstar. When I finished Read Dead 2 I just sat through the credits in awe at the sheer amount of effort that had gone into it. Animals skinned while you watch, lines recorded twice for close and far away dialogue, whole hunting and animal systems. Subtle changes in dialogue depending on how you play.

Compare to "AAAA" games like Far Cry Avatar, with an equal number of systems, but none are really fleshed out, and the whole thing feels very half arsed in comparison.

I think the only game to really come close to them is Baldur's Gate 3.

Yeah, the online stuff is pure fucking greed, but I don't care for that. I don't play it. I never loaded GTAO or Red Dead Online. I don't demand I be allowed to pay extra for more DLC. It's all in the base game I already bought. I play it, I finish it, it goes on the shelf. Or it went on the shelf. RIP discs, I guess. :(

zikzak025@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 5d (1 reply)

I will still recommend people wait. Wait for reviews, wait for initial audience impressions, and wait to play it on your platform of choice.

What I see is a game that has a lot of detail and some big cinematic moments that make for a good trailer. But whether all that detail translates into a genuinely fun experience remains to be seen.

For all we know, the rest of the game outside of the trailers could be nothing but ET trying to jump out of holes.

qarbone@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 5d

Oh, I agree. Always wait for reviews unless you like throwing money away.

And I won't be buying this game.

echodot@feddit.uk · 3 pts · 4d

Apple make good hardware, their software is awful. It's really annoying because I really want a time of flight sensor on my phone so I can do some 3D scanning but I'll have to put up with apples awful operating system that won't talk to any computer that isn't a Mac

scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech · 15 pts · 5d (3 replies)

I think it'll be a great game, but disappointed they don't want to release for me. I was so hyped I was going to buy a PlayStation, until PlayStation started their latest BS with discs. Now I'm forced to wait to give them money

zikzak025@lemmy.world · 24 pts · 5d (2 replies)

GTA5 lost me in the campaign, and I can't imagine GTA6 will be any better in that regard. Never bothered with the online features. I'm not even disappointed they aren't doing a PC release and doubt I'll buy it even if they do.

I mean, just the idea that a purchase of the game amounts to tacit support of their union busting bullshit is reason enough not to buy it. Their games sell the gangster fantasy, but GTA6 as a product is basically the antithesis of rebellion.

scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech · 19 pts · 5d

kromem@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 4d (3 replies)

It's only a single player game. (Currently)

TachyonTele_Esq@piefed.social · 1 pts · 4d (2 replies)

Isn't it co op? That's why they have two MCs.

kromem@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 3d (1 reply)

No. The two MCs are who a single player can swap between. It's a single player gameplay mechanic. There is no co-op or multiplayer in the current release and the two protagonist stories will always be single player.

GTA 5 had three protagonists you could swap between for the single player, so this is refining that dynamic.

They'll likely release an online product sometime next year.

I can't buy it. I couldn't find a reason to get a console this gen. So I'll be waiting for PC, and I got enough things to play for years in the mean time.

zikzak025@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 5d (3 replies)

The patient gamer strategy has always paid off for me, and I have to recommend it to everyone else.

One of the games I finished most recently was Cyberpunk 2077. Great game worth playing today, not so great at launch. And on the CD Projekt topic, The Witcher 3 has also been on my to-do list for ages, and guess what's getting a remaster in a few more weeks?

There are too many games out there to play in one lifetime. When most games seem to be in their worst state at launch, why rush to buy when there's so much else out there to try while you wait?

Kekzkrieger@feddit.org · 2 pts · 4d (2 replies)

It's unreal for me how impatient some people are, a friend is buying an console just so he can play it earlier. Pre-ordering every single game and then complaining they get unfinished stuff.

Like dude i just wait till it releases with a normal price tag, we're waaay to old to care about having fomo.

zikzak025@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 4d

That's ridiculous. Especially with the cost of consoles nowadays, and the fact that we're about to be locked into a no-disc ecosystem. And on top of that, that new consoles are going to be announced in a year or two anyways.

Rockstar is using the same strategy as GTA5. Push the financially irresponsible to buy a console for 1 game. Then push the even more irresponsible to upgrade to a next-gen console for a better port of 1 game. Then release the PC version last, hoping that anyone running on the treadmill for best experience will end up triple dipping.

echodot@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 4d

After No Mans Sky I swore off pre orders. I know they fixed it but still.

Game looks really good, but totally not my thing. Happy for the folks that’ll enjoy it though.

I posted it to c/piracy on lemmy.dbzer0.com. Not sure if linking the post will break rule 6 here

zikzak025@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 4d

It would. I initially had this post pointing to a Streamable link during the exclusivity window, but it was removed for Rule 6. Not sure how that rule interacts with alternate YouTube frontends like Invidious, but I'm not going to press my luck.

If anyone wants an unauthorized stream that bypasses YouTube and Netflix, they're not hard to find with a simple web search. If that's too much effort, you're not missing much anyways.

This just looks like an expansion pack for gta5 imo. I dont really understand why this is being hailed as a massive cultural event.

This just looks like an expansion pack for gta5 imo

I don't even plan on buying this, but I think this is a wild take.

TheFrirish@tarte.nuage-libre.fr · 3 pts · 5d (1 reply)

It's essentially the difference between gta 3 and SA but instead of it taking 3 years it took them 13 years... so the take is absolutely not wild

chunes@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 4d

Yeah except one skyscraper in GTA 6 probably has as many polygons as the entirety of GTA 3.

ampersandrew@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 5d

Because about 150 million people are going to play it in the next couple of years, which we can't say about any other video game that we know of.

They literally crashed Netflix, it's gonna make a trillion dollars

SolarPunker@slrpnk.net · 6 pts · 5d

Thanks for sharing. I never judge from trailers but I don't think they will release a demo: it looks good but also the same GTA stuff, I was hoping for something more audacious and instead it seems innocuous at a narrative level. Maybe the first boring GTA? I think it will sell very good since it targets normies for the most but I'm very curious to read the critique when playtested.

mriormro@lemmy.zip · 6 pts · 5d

Shitty overblown budget of a “game”.

mrmisses@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 5d

It looks good but so what, of course it does. Can I go into any house/business? How open world is it truly? Does every shop have unique items and layouts?

phar@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 5d (11 replies)

Wait...so two unknown people just walk up and say they're picking something up for a guy, and the dudes out front just let them in? That was so ridiculous I couldn't keep watching

DarkCloud@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 5d (8 replies)

Now introducing our main character: Generic White Guy! I also didn't see one joke or parody... The thing that's expected of GTA... It used to be social commentary. This just looks like a cop show about drugs.

ampersandrew@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 5d (4 replies)

Did you miss the drug and fast food commercials?

DarkCloud@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 5d (3 replies)

Yes, the drug one cut off early... The fast food one felt like society has already passed that level of marketing. Like, if it was on TV today I would jusr accept it as a marketing campaign.

People IRL know where meat comes from. It wasn't like "hunt your own burger" - or "Now with the special cannibal beef"... It was Poe's law, nothing signalling extreme parody.

...they just felt like, ads. More like a simulation of what some executive thought was in GTA5, rather than someone moving with it.

ampersandrew@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 5d (2 replies)

Oh my. If you didn't sense the parody in those ads, I fear that satire is lost on you.

DarkCloud@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 5d (1 reply)

That's kind of the point of Poe's law...

It was a weak sense of parody. Like what are they parodying? That drug and fast food ads exist? We live in an age of Trumpism... People wearing gold diapers... You think I'm flinch at ads for drugs or meat?

There's no play or even pushing of limits there. There was no spice to it.

ampersandrew@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 5d

This video demo was 25 minutes out of a game that's going to be more than 30 hours, most likely. It seems strange to expect to be able to evaluate its satire off of such a small sample.

They parodied how strange our drug ad laws are and how much of a crutch we use drugs as. Then the fast food commercial started by showing a wide ecosystem of animals that were seemingly all killed for one sandwich, because no one can fit a sandwich that big in their mouth; then it labeled it as 30,000 calories, which is about 10-15x what most people will or should eat in a day. Jokes are rarely funnier when someone explains them to you, but you asked what the parody was.

CosmoNova@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 5d

I skipped through it but there was a very obvious die hard inspired mission towards the end. I think that counts as a parody although it lacked humor in my opinion.

zikzak025@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 5d (1 reply)

Maybe the game itself is the parody. Like when Jeremy Strong's character in Succession thinks he's gangster because he listens to rap music and does drugs sometimes. But he's still just an insecure, corporate manchild.

DarkCloud@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 5d

Isn't that the premise of every cop/drug movie ever?

I kind of expected a game where you shifted between comedic versions of the current cast of social characters there are in American society today.

Parodying all sides of poverty/wealth, woke and Nazis, Q-pilled Grandmas with guns, Tech Billionaires and fascists, gen-Z and gen Alpha and aging millennials... Hit us all up and make fun of it all.

I'm betting there's no ICE deportations, flock cameras, or AI bros in the script.

Rockstar used to be a British company parodying American extremism... But they moved the whole company to LA. Now they're an American company, contributing to America's corporate culture and politics. That's probably why this feels undercooked.

knatschus@discuss.tchncs.de · 3 pts · 5d

At the main entrance to the building been just some thugs, dropping a name and a short vibe check seems totally reasonable to me. The security guy for the business was at the elevator and to me it looked like he was texting with someone to confirm.

iamthetot@piefed.ca · 2 pts · 5d

That's, like, the least ridiculous thing that happens in a GTA game in general.

paraphrand@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 5d (1 reply)

Looks great.

And people upset about how the preview was posted are just looking for additional reasons to be upset with Rockstar.

Be upset about more important things, like labor issues, crunch, union busting, no physical release, etc.

Spawn7586@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 7 pts · 5d

I mean I don't really need more reasons. Between union busting and mass layoffs, people that actually worked on this are long gone and I'm not gonna give my money to those rich fucks.

Luckily they help out by delaying PC version and pricing the digital game like an old console.

They should mark this as movie trailer with spoilers. I pretty much played it on skip and saw maybe 1 minute of gameplay without story.

CaptDust@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 5d (5 replies)

It looks incredible. I seriously wonder if we'll ever see another game ever attempt this scale, this could be rockstar's magnum opus.

DarkCloud@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 5d (2 replies)

Point to the spicy yet endearing character... Because I didn't see any. Saw some stiff cop-like stand-ins though.

Where was the social commentary? The jokes/parody about society? The fun stuff that made GTA5 a media storm.

CaptDust@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 5d (1 reply)

If I'm getting critical I agree - the story seemed somewhat mild/cliche. The dialog was lacking any sort of interesting banter, it was mostly fluctuating between business and panic. I'm not really loving Jason's VA, but I didn't dig Niko's VA either at first.

However the sandbox that I'm seeing in action (ie, the police chase, hallway gun fight) is frankly incredibly and ridiculously detailed to a point of absurdity. It's a generational leap forward in open world richness, of that respect.

I'm hopeful it doesn't take always take itself so seriously. There was some commentary shown in the first trailer too, though.

DarkCloud@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 5d

Yeah, and there's some swamp area stuff in this clip - but I don't think that's a very wide net of parody.

I think you're right. It will be A+ gameplay and detail. Switching between feelings of tension, panic, and business. And no doubt there's cops to escape.

Watch Dogs had some of that. It didn't sell it though. GTA5 exploded in popularity because the media were baited into talking about it, GTA6 feels like a mature game in a genre defined by GTA5. That fine, enough for most people. Cops and Robbers is a fun enough genre for most people.

zikzak025@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 5d

I mean, what else is this community for, really?

mechoman444@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 3d

I watched this last night, and honestly, aside from the buddy system that nobody asked for and what appears to be some kind of morality/criminal profile system that makes very little sense in a GTA setting, I saw remarkably little that actually interested me.

Yes, it looks absolutely gorgeous. Yes, there are heavy plot elements, impressive character animations, and an enormous amount of polish. But underneath all of that, I'm not seeing much that makes me think, "Holy shit, this is what GTA needed to become."

And that's what concerns me.

My fear isn't that GTA VI is going to be bad. It's that Rockstar has spent all this time trying to "innovate" when they really didn't need to. GTA already has an incredibly successful formula. Give us a massive, reactive sandbox, better AI, smarter police, deeper heists, more emergent gameplay, better vehicle physics, and more freedom in how we approach things. That's innovation enough.

I don't need GTA to become Red Dead Redemption with cars, a morality system, relationship mechanics, and a heavily scripted narrative.

I'm also increasingly worried about the industry's tendency to try to appeal to the broadest possible audience while simultaneously designing around increasingly specific demographics. You can end up with a game that technically has something for everyone but somehow loses the thing that made people love the franchise in the first place.

Just look at the new Wolverine game. That's exactly the sort of direction I'm afraid of seeing more often: taking an established property and deciding that it needs to be something fundamentally different rather than simply making an excellent version of what people already liked.

All Rockstar had to do was make another GTA. They didn't need to reinvent the wheel.

I really hope I'm wrong about this. Because if GTA VI turns out to be an incredible open-world crime sandbox underneath all the cinematic presentation, I'll be the first person to shut up and enjoy it.

Please be right, Rockstar.
