I hate these “gangs” of kids on ATVs and motorbikes with no licenses. They completely F up traffic, pulling stunts, lunging at cars, and sometimes even wrecking and stopping traffic entirely. They’re like those biker tools that block intersections so the entire gang gets through or street takeovers.
Cars already take over the roads, why shouldn't people try to take them back?
My local bicycle ride that blocks intersections while the riders go through is known and protected by the police -- the legal theory is that if the front of a vehicle entered the intersection on a green light, the "vehicle" can continue through the intersection if the light changes. And a group of people riding bikes as one unit is considered one vehicle.
A bike ride with many people in it is considered a single vehicle if they all ride together with no big gaps through the intersection. There are volunteers called "corkers" who will stand in front of the intersection to clearly signal to motor vehicles that it is not safe to enter the intersection yet. They're trained in deescalation in case someone is really upset that they had to wait an extra minute or two on a Friday night.
Why are you comparing two completely different things? Are you being deliberately dense to start an argument? You are comparing a known sanctioned cycling event to illegal riders, and illegal riders to licensed and insured drivers who legally have a right to the road.
They’re like those biker tools that block intersections so the entire gang gets through or street takeovers.
This sentence describes bike party to a t, which is not really officially sanctioned -- they just give the police a heads up to be nice.
I am not trying to be dense, i am just trying to explain why bicyclists block intersections to let the whole group go through. It is partially to protest cars.
The ones I see aren’t cyclists participating in group events. It’s dirt bikes, atv’s, and now even some e-bikes, unlicensed, unsanctioned, stunt riding and being general assholes on the road. Stop trying to twist reality into somehow legitimizing their BS.
I dont see why the roads should only be for "licensed" cars. Stunt riding is fine as long as it doesn't hurt people. Sometimes they join in the bike party. It seems like you're trying to say the roads should exclude all these vehicles, when I would like more ebikes on the road and less cars. Dirt bikes and atvs can come too.
I am not a big fan of motorized vehicles, I generally bike. But it seems to me that saying "stunt riding is fine as long as it doesn't hurt people" is more or less the same as saying "drunk driving is fine as long as it doesn't hurt people". I've noticed. They may be at low speeds, but imagine if Officer Porky managed to take down one of the first kids before that big section came through. That kid would have then been a road hazard and likely taken out more kids, hurting both the first and subsequent kids in the accident.
It really is too bad Porky was able to walk away after he got hit. Wish he would have gotten the injuries he was trying to inflict on the kids.
It’s actually really easy to not be a selfish piece of shit. Most people do it all the time. These shitty kids made their choices, and they weren’t good ones.
No, we really aren’t. We are taking about a proportional force response. These people are willing to go speeding around on sidewalks and through red light intersections. They badly hurt people with that behavior. It’s not like the cop pulled a gun.
The only way I can see from your perspective is if you don’t understand how spike strips work. They don’t just pop and shred a fire, they are specifically engineered to slowly let the air out.

The person trained for high-speed driving is driving at a speed that untrained people claim is too fast for that person's ability in those circumstances while driving for work as an emergency worker?
Yes. Teaching the next generation of bikers to be careful, and expecting cops to not spike strip a motorcycle is a skill that your comments seem to indicate that you lack.
If by "leeway", you mean "additional charges for driving without due care and attention", because he wasn't able to stop in a 40kmph zone when something had been in view for 10 seconds, and seemed to be going so fast that he carried on for 50 feet after running down the emergency worker, then you'd be right!
Yeah, he was in the whole fucking lane. Do you know what responsible motorists do when a human is in the road? It's not "try and whip around them on the outside forcing them into another lane of traffic".
Not gonna comment on the choice of method for the intervention but I have a feeling this gang's members can probably be seen saying things like "immigrants fock up our country mate" and then go eat in an Indian restaurant.
Certain reddit subs were basically designed or practically act like they were designed to polarize society. Like CrazyFuckingVideos or unpopularOpinion. You show the worst, most extreme things to rile up emotions, and those emotions then provide an easy recruitment to the alt-right. Basically this is how social media radicalized 90% of people.
there's quite a bit of nasty old heads, I'm finding. On one hand, they were here first but on the other their main forms of engaging with other people is is either this pearl clutching or being unprovokedly nasty in attempt to "toughen people up".
These aren't kids. The quad rider was a 27 year old man who "[tested] positive following a drugs test" and who also appears to have previously been convicted of possession of an offensive weapon in public. He was jailed for 15 months for this.
The judge described the gang:
travelling at speeds of 35mph*, weaving in and out of traffic, ignoring red lights, and travelling on the opposite carriageway at one stage.
This was highly dangerous and posed a significant risk to the public. Many of those who were riding concealed their identity.
* The speed limit in built-up areas here is generally 30mph or 20mph
It's crazy that anyone is defending the riders when video shows them:
riding on the wrong side of the road (in the UK we drive on the left)
Yeah that's what I see. Some asshole running into the road trying to hurt bikers and getting hit because he runs in front of one, to then start attacking one of the people he was trying to hurt. ACAB.
Sure acab, but this is not one of those situations. The bike riders here are assholes the lot of them. The quad bike had no reason to ride straight into a dude wearing a high vis.
A safer thing to do is block the road with cars and kettle from behind. Then even if people flee on foot you can impound the bikes or whatever to a vastly better effect in terms of reducing public nuisance.
The officer here wasn't improving safety, he was making a larger hazard, putting himself in danger, and ended up paying for it.
They want to use their toys and they want to cause harm.
Yes and the cop could've killed these kids by popping their tires while they're riding recklessly. Rather than do actual police work that takes time and effort to remove these bikes from the streets, the cops decided to do the easiest and most dangerous thing for everyone involved. This was absolutely the worst possible way they could go about to stop people who ride like this.
Depending on the belt used the tires don't actually just "pop" like in the movies. They get holds such causes them to deflate and become undeliverable. Ever got a punctured tire before? It's not an instant process by any means.
There are belts can actually make larger holes as the spike comes out, but this doesn't seem to be the case here.
Rolling around 2 ton cars with your dirtbike is a good way to kill only yourself. Even in this video, the guy on the heaviest one, a quad, plowed straight into the cop and only got tackled off it.
The cop knows this too. He jumped in front of him to tackle him.
I agree that you might get scared by people acting too rowdy, and that you might get your paint job scratched, but your chances of dying are way higher with a moving truck nearby than a few dirt bikes.
What that cop was trying to do, would have caused a serious accident and injuries if he had succeeded. Cops are always the villains, harassing teenagers and brutalizing people protesting against genocide, while protecting rich pedophiles.
Delusional much? The traffic stop was clearly visible to the group and the attempt to block the road as well - if you don't slow down upon seeing an obstacle, that's 100% on you.
No, it isn't. Even if you fall off due to the flat tyre, and that's not a given, if you're wearing a helmet the chances of serious injury are very low.
Did you miss the part where you are supposed to slow down when you see an obstacle or even an unclear traffic situation up ahead? People who don't do that do not belong on the road.
They didn't seem to be driving very recklessly to me. Just in a big group. That cop could have caused a serious accident to many of them, and you would have cheered because "these damn kids".
I mean UK police carry no firearm and are held to much higher standards. And the driver of the atv literally ran someone over and didn't stop.
What kind of police DO you want to have?
You can argue for revolution and civil war in the UK because of fascist politics from both labor and tories, but then you're talking about armed soldiers not police.
Motorcycles. And you either want to live in a civilized society or not. So on the one hand UK police are pretty great as far as police go, and absolutely have the right to stop motorized traffic for being "annoying" in a residential street. You absolutely do want to police shit like this. These are just bourgeois kids doing stupid dangerous stuff.
On the other hand there is the political stuff and increasing illegitimacy of the UK government. But I see nothing political here.
Seriously, what am I supposed to be upset about here? Traffic stops?
While I don't like these bike gangs, what the police was doing is reckless. I would argue the guy on the quad just feared for his life, because the spikes could have caused an accident. So he did the safe thing and went around them, and the cop just happened to be jaywalking there.
I know, and I hate jaywalking too. I'm just applying to them what they apply to us. It's only fair. If I was doing that same thing (save the spikes) and got run over, I'd still be (partially) blamed for it.
I thought jaywalking existed in UK. Now I know. Lucky 10000, ig.
Because Britain is saner, there’s no such thing as “jaywalking” and pedestrians always have right of way, unless they are specifically banned by the type of road.
I know, and I hate jaywalking too. I'm just applying to them what they apply to us. It's only fair. If I was doing that same thing (save the spikes) and got run over, I'd still be (partially) blamed for it.

This is one of the few times I actually feel sorry for the cops.
The community simultaneously wants the crowds of dipshits on trail bikes stopped but also pretty much agrees that a teenager riding around on a trail bike who isnt setting out to hurt anyone doesnt deserve to be seriously injured to stop them.
Failure to stop for pedestrian, failure to stop for police, speeding, reckless driving, and probably also driving an unroadworthy vehicle, driving without insurance, driving without a licence and you can’t believe this kid hadn’t been huffing anything that day.
Oh no, they are falling over at brisk walking speeds because they fumbled to just put their foot down when the vehicle slowed to a halt. My pearls, where are they?
You feel attacked by a single question that is neutral in tone and asks you to clarify the argument you are making?
So would this group driving be considered reckless and dangerous if it knocked over a pedestrian in clear view on a street with a walkway potentially lethally?
You legit think the cop thought “Hey, let me kill these kids!”
Did you even go outside as a kid? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve fallen off a bike at those slow speeds. Not even close to a death sentence. If falling at those speeds scares you, you are either 80 years old, or 300 pounds.
Calling me fascist is hilarious 😂
Are you gunna pose an actual argument? Or are you gunna act like an insecure internet child slinging insults?
You legit think the cop thought “Hey, let me kill these kids!”
Yes, I absolutely do think that. Exhibit A are all the people in this thread that think attempted murder is an acceptable penalty for a child riding recklessly on a bicycle. Seeing as cops tend to have far less empathy than the human average, I would expect them to be less worried about civilian safety than the people in this thread. The folks in this thread are advocating summary execution for traffic violations, so I see no reason a cop wouldn't do the same.
People fall off motorbikes all the time, and usually get a few bruises, if that. If riding a motorbike was anywhere near as dangerous as you think, it would be considered an extreme sport.
Ususally there are not 30+ other Bikes in very close Proximity when you fall of. The Argument isnt, that a bike with a flat tire will Explode in Flames, it is, that in this Situation the first bike would get significantly slowed down by a flat tire, the second bike would crash into the first and a few other bikes would then run over the fallen down. Perfectly Predictably.
Yes, I think the cop went full Judge Dredd and didn’t consider who he would injure or how bad.
I’ve posted an argument and you’ve called me a three hundred pound 80-year-old (so what if I am?).
Your carbrain is completely obvious. And if you think the officer was justified in possibly killing people (for what perceived offense?), guess what? Fascist, too.
I wrecked my motorcycle in a curve at 60 mph and got a broken wrist. These people are not going to die at 25 mph when their tires blow. the cop was not trying to murder anybody stop being sensationalist
Fucking hero on the ATV, might have saved a life. If one of those motorcycles' tires got popped, the rider might die or suffer life-changing injuries. And it's even wilder that this cop-brained monster thinks that's an acceptable outcome for any minor traffic violation.
If that kid or dog is trying to kill people, then maybe, depending on the circumstances. Obviously if it was an actual kid, you would have to approach the situation with the care it deserves...but also, for example, I would have literally zero qualms about running over a minor committing a school shooting if that was the only option to stop the violence.
Like if it was a person in a different uniform using a baseball bat instead of a car you wouldn't bat a fucking eye at someone using a weapon to defend innocent people.
It seems like we mostly agree, but I think you are grossly neglecting the danger that these dirt bike and ATV gangs pose. They drive extremely fast in places where that is not OK, including busy sidewalks, and they hurt innocent people all the time. They also tend to leave a trail of destruction behind them as well.
I think you are grossly neglecting the danger that these dirt bike and ATV gangs pose.
Right but there is a difference between people riding irresponsibly but without intentionally trying to destroy people, versus this cop who is very deliberately trying to take out as many bikers as possible. And especially for young people whose brains are still developing, in particular the parts of the brain responding for judging risks.
Like of course some of them are riding dangerously, and the dangerous driving should be socially discouraged...but the cops are a particularly blunt, carceral, and ineffective instrument for discouraging any reckless behavior, in particular the bastard in this video. And even within existing carceral systems, spike strips are blunt tools. For example, pigs could have filmed them and picked them up when it was safe to do so, or used the 69 bajillion security cameras that has to figure out who was driving and yell at them.
That's a bad faith interpretation. How in the world do you see a reply saying, "summary execution is not an acceptable penalty for traffic violations," and warp that into, "well, I guess you just don't want any traffic enforcement at all."
Calling this traffic enforcement is also a bad faith interpretation. Unless you consider people riding motorcycles at high speeds on busy sidewalks to be a traffic issue? That’s what these goons do, and they are constantly injuring innocent people.
What the fuck else would you call it? All infractions involving the use of a vehicle are traffic infractions. Unless I deliberately murder you by tracking you down and deliberately running you over with my car, it's just a traffic infraction. Driving on the sidewalk is a moving violation.
They're doing 50 kmh at best, even without a helmet your chances of serious injury are pretty low. People fall off motorbikes all the time at far greater speeds.
This is an incorrect, dangerous, and irresponsible thing to say. You can very easily die at 5km/h on a motorcycle. Your body is not as tough as you think it is.
Yes it's possible with unfortunate circumstances. "Very easily die at 5 km/h" is demonstrably untrue, as though a significant amount of people that start up a bike die horribly. Yes bikes/mopeds/motorcycles are more dangerous than cars but it's dumb to misrepresent reality like this.
The second half of your statement demonstrates how the bikers are acting unsafely in the first place.
My comment isn't even really about motorcycles being extra dangerous. I ride every day that weather allows and have for over 30 years.
It is more about how remarkably fragile some of our bodies' weak points are. Perhaps I could have worded it better. But to me 'easily die' just means unexpected stuff can happen when putting a bike down at all. Not that there is necessarily a high likelihood of it happening at that speed, just that it is easy.
Surely there is no nuance or inbetween option available. Surely they should just get the death penalty for such horrid theft and disrespect of the sanctity of physical posessions.
"falling aoff the motorcycle that is moving faster than people can sprint, even without a helmet, isn't that dangerous"
As someone who sells and fixes bicycles this is THE STUPIDEST FUCKING THING I'VE READ THIS WEEK. And I heard someone recently say "at least dolly Parton knew to stay out of politics"
ANY fall off a bike, motorized or not, can be fatal. If you're moving, those chances go up. If you're moving a heavy or large bike, it's even greater. It's why I refuse to sell bikes to anyone who says they don't wear helmets.
People have fallen from higher than the tallest building and survived. Doesn't mean it's not insanely dangerous.
Because they are wearing highly advanced protective gear, are trained how to take a fall, are in peak physical condition, and are racing in an environment specially designed to protect them.
Falling off a bike at 50 kph means you're hitting the ground with the same speed as a 10 meter fall. Please go jump off a three story building and then come back to report how harmless it is.

The kids are riding willingly past a cop car.

Noodle07@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 1d
They didnt shoot the kids so there's still a small margin for "absolute worst"
phx@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 23h
Depending on the belt used the tires don't actually just "pop" like in the movies. They get holds such causes them to deflate and become undeliverable. Ever got a punctured tire before? It's not an instant process by any means.
There are belts can actually make larger holes as the spike comes out, but this doesn't seem to be the case here.

Themselves.

Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 15h

Manfredolin@feddit.org · 1 pts · 9h
Ususally there are not 30+ other Bikes in very close Proximity when you fall of. The Argument isnt, that a bike with a flat tire will Explode in Flames, it is, that in this Situation the first bike would get significantly slowed down by a flat tire, the second bike would crash into the first and a few other bikes would then run over the fallen down. Perfectly Predictably.

Fucking hero on the ATV, might have saved a life. If one of those motorcycles' tires got popped, the rider might die or suffer life-changing injuries. And it's even wilder that this cop-brained monster thinks that's an acceptable outcome for any minor traffic violation.

ayyy@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 23h
So ripping through town and running over a kid or a dog is hero behavior now?
PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@anarchist.nexus · -1 pts · 22h
If that kid or dog is trying to kill people, then maybe, depending on the circumstances. Obviously if it was an actual kid, you would have to approach the situation with the care it deserves...but also, for example, I would have literally zero qualms about running over a minor committing a school shooting if that was the only option to stop the violence.
Like if it was a person in a different uniform using a baseball bat instead of a car you wouldn't bat a fucking eye at someone using a weapon to defend innocent people.
ayyy@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 20h
It seems like we mostly agree, but I think you are grossly neglecting the danger that these dirt bike and ATV gangs pose. They drive extremely fast in places where that is not OK, including busy sidewalks, and they hurt innocent people all the time. They also tend to leave a trail of destruction behind them as well.
PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@anarchist.nexus · -1 pts · 18h
Right but there is a difference between people riding irresponsibly but without intentionally trying to destroy people, versus this cop who is very deliberately trying to take out as many bikers as possible. And especially for young people whose brains are still developing, in particular the parts of the brain responding for judging risks.
Like of course some of them are riding dangerously, and the dangerous driving should be socially discouraged...but the cops are a particularly blunt, carceral, and ineffective instrument for discouraging any reckless behavior, in particular the bastard in this video. And even within existing carceral systems, spike strips are blunt tools. For example, pigs could have filmed them and picked them up when it was safe to do so, or used the 69 bajillion security cameras that
has to figure out who was driving and yell at them.
WoodScientist@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 21h
That's a bad faith interpretation. How in the world do you see a reply saying, "summary execution is not an acceptable penalty for traffic violations," and warp that into, "well, I guess you just don't want any traffic enforcement at all."
Frankly, your chain of logic is utterly baffling.
ayyy@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 20h
Calling this traffic enforcement is also a bad faith interpretation. Unless you consider people riding motorcycles at high speeds on busy sidewalks to be a traffic issue? That’s what these goons do, and they are constantly injuring innocent people.
WoodScientist@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 16h
What the fuck else would you call it? All infractions involving the use of a vehicle are traffic infractions. Unless I deliberately murder you by tracking you down and deliberately running you over with my car, it's just a traffic infraction. Driving on the sidewalk is a moving violation.

It is more about how remarkably fragile some of our bodies' weak points are. Perhaps I could have worded it better. But to me 'easily die' just means unexpected stuff can happen when putting a bike down at all. Not that there is necessarily a high likelihood of it happening at that speed, just that it is easy.

One wrong twist of the neck from a bad fall and you're dead.
The bastard cops shouldn't be doing this.
Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works · -2 pts · 21h
Yeah, the big meanies should just let them snatch all the phones they want and terrorise pedestrians.
Go fuck yourself.
Olgratin_Magmatoe@slrpnk.net · 4 pts · 21h
Ah yes, the only to options:
Surely there is no nuance or inbetween option available. Surely they should just get the death penalty for such horrid theft and disrespect of the sanctity of physical posessions.
Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works · -2 pts · 21h
They actually do just run these twits over quite often, with massive public support.
WoodScientist@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 21h
You're advocating summary execution for traffic violations.
Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 15h
Why are you absolutely convinced any fall on a motorbike is fatal? You're absolutely everywhere in this thread making the same argument.
People fall off the things all the time.
boonhet@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 2h
By that logic, the riders are also doing summary execution of pedestrians. They're definitely doing their best to get into accidents.
untorquer@quokk.au · 5 pts · 1d
Motorcycles are known for sharing roads with other vehicles.
But yeah in isolation a broken ankle is far more likely at these speeds, not exactly life threatening in most cases.

Let me know when you've got 100,000 km of saddle time and then we can have this chat again.

I’ve got over five times that and you’re wrong.

Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works · -3 pts · 21h
Can be? Sure. Likely to be? Not really. And if they're not wearing a helmet, that's their problem anyway.
PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@anarchist.nexus · 19 pts · 1d
And usually die horrible deaths at said speeds...
Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works · -4 pts · 21h
No, they don't. Have you ever seen MotoGP? Those guys will drop their bike at hundreds of KMH, get up, and walk away quite often.
ohulancutash@feddit.uk · 5 pts · 15h
Because they are wearing highly advanced protective gear, are trained how to take a fall, are in peak physical condition, and are racing in an environment specially designed to protect them.
Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works · -4 pts · 15h
Yeah, and if they can do it at hundreds of KMH, normal people can do it at 30.

I have a scar from when a car pulled in front of me while I was going walking speed on a bicycle.
Shut the fuck up.
Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works · -5 pts · 21h
I don't believe you were going walking speed. And I know people who have dropped a bike in a corner multiple times, and just got up.
resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe · 5 pts · 21h
You want a picture?
The fuck is wrong with you?
Fucking ghoul.
Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works · -3 pts · 21h
I think you're making shit up, to be honest.
resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe · 5 pts · 21h
Here you go:
Convinced?
Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works · -3 pts · 17h
That's it? That's your horrible scar?
What a drama queen.
WoodScientist@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 21h
Falling off a bike at 50 kph means you're hitting the ground with the same speed as a 10 meter fall. Please go jump off a three story building and then come back to report how harmless it is.
Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works · -2 pts · 21h
If you hit a solid object, then it's an equivalent comparison. Usually you just slide to a stop.

Not my country either but this scramblers and quads is like a street culture and delinquent shit over in the states
Texas_Hangover@lemmy.radio · 5 pts · 1d
Seems it's fairly common in Ye Olde England as well.
Not sure why you feel the need to bring up the US.
Squizzy@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 21h
I have never seen it before. Only ever is like rap videos or shows and movies where they are trying to sell a street aesthetic.
It wasnt so much a burning need as an observation
Texas_Hangover@lemmy.radio · -1 pts · 19h
Do you make a habit out of spewing your random opinions about topics you clearly know next to nothing about?
Squizzy@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 12h
Jesus man get off your cross, it was a one line observation, not an opinion on a topic that rquires some great knowledge.
How long have you been studying scramblers going up roads?
