For me, if I ask for an unpopular opinion and you say something about pineapple on pizza I'm going to assume you have no personality.

That homelessness is a choice and the people sleeping on the ground and being nibbled on by rats are somehow gaming the system.

Eyedust@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 45 pts · 3d (2 replies)

I got hit with this by an elderly person one day. They went on about how there's so much food out there that they could just forage for, but they choose to beg for it. I was working, so all I could do was smile and nod, but that smile was just frozen in place like a grimace.

During this whole rant my boss and I kept glancing at each other like they were insane. I can't remember the exact details, I cleansed my brain of that garbage, but there were a few times my boss' eyes flashed and I thought he was going to flip out.

They left like they were the avatar of mercy and understanding. I may have forgotten what they said exactly, but I'll never forget how they looked, because that went right down in my mind under "people I'll never become". I mean... you have to actively try to become that ignorant, right?

...Right?

Unfortunately that generation is doing a pretty good job of screwing up everything so there won't be much left to enjoy when they die off.

Even if people did choose to do so, it should be a huge red flag to happen then. If people would rather sleep on the street than participate in society, maybe shit is fucked up.

Think that one, the opinion itself, varies in boring/interesting depending on where you live. Likewise varies in truthfulness.

ch00f@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 3d (3 replies)

What do you mean by "depending on where you live?"

FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d (2 replies)

It (edit: the idea you're quoting) has more credence or less depending on your town.

  • Are there a lot of charities and free services that homeless people can use? Couple that with a notably generous population and you might see actual wilful homelessness.
  • On the other hand, I don't think homelessness is ever a choice or comfortable in very car centric city with gang violence.

I suppose nobody is "gaming the system by being homeless" because even if it's comfy, you're not gaining more than you would be by not gaming the system of homelessness. But i think it's undeniable that, in certain places for various reasons, people choose/pretend to be homeless.

ch00f@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 2d

Are there a lot of charities and free services that homeless people can use?

Depends on the type of homeless. Folks who were just evicted and need someplace safe so they can get back on their feet? Sure. People with severe mental health issues or drug addictions? not so much.

Going to a shelter involves giving up certain freedoms that living outside affords you. If you're dealing with a heroin addiction, they won't let you bring your drugs in. Got a pet dog companion? No dogs allowed. Going with a friend or partner? Expect to be split up. Also shelters often fill up and the next shelter with space may be an hour walk away.

It also doesn't help that the shelters are all separate charities and don't really coordinate.

So as miserable as it is, many people prefer living in tents and won't even accept a shelter when they're offered help as their tent encampment is being cleared by authorities.

Complexicate@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2d

As someone who works with homeless people in an area with a generous population, lots of charities, and free services, you are repeating one of the most dangerous types of misinformation. It's the kind that draws our attention to 0.1% that is technically true, while diminishing the conversation about the actual problem.

The "tourists", as we sometimes call them, are the 0.1%. They come and go and there is always one or two around, but they are not the ones with the serious problems. Some might think of them as outliers in the group, but I wouldn't even group those 0.1% with the other 99.9%. We still make sure they are okay, but they are not the problem when people talk about "homelessness".

I'm assuming you are good hearted. All intelligent good-natured people have mistakenly repeated points before understand the nuances. I just hope you and anyone else reading might consider a different way of thinking. Repeating this talking point makes it very hard for the people trying to fight homelessness. Funding drys up and people die because public discussion often focuses on the "tourists" and not on the actual problem.

Seems kinda unpopular based on just the sheer amount of pristine lawn grass there is. But is also so incredibly low stakes it's boring

In my experience there seem to be four types of people: those who don't have a lawn; those who have never heard of clover on lawns; those with clover on their lawns; and those who live under the unrelenting glare and iron thumb of a homeowner's association.

neidu3@sh.itjust.works · 19 pts · 3d (1 reply)

At work we had the radio on in the workshop, and we were discussing my preference for 90s music.

Then some shite song came on that I remembered from decades past, and I had to add "but as you can hear, there was plenty of garbage back then too"

spittingimage@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 3d

Been listening to a lot of 90s music recently but hearing the lyrics properly for the first time on modern equipment... yeah. A lot of them don't deserve to be remembered fondly.

adwijoma@lemmy.ml · 11 pts · 3d (4 replies)

Hmm... I actually can explain why certain things were better in the past compared to today. It comes down to market research, consumerism/saturation of capitalism.

Take modern music, for example. The 60s and 70s was a time where the music industry hadn't flattened out in any way. The labels and publishers were trying to work out what people responded to. And people were responding to all kinds of stuff. It was just a mishmash of tastes and people liked what stoked their imagination.

And with regards to the artists and musicians, they were mainly just making whatever the hell sounded good and felt good. No one quite had any idea what they were doing.

Almost everything was really original for the above reasons.

You had bands who released albums, containing what you could vaguely call rock but with many other influences, containing three tracks, one of which was 20 mins long and the other two being 10 mins each. And such a band would go on tour selling out stadiums and selling millions of copies of said album.

Of course, there was bad music then. But the sheer proportion of amazing music was insane.

And it was because we hadn't yet been market researched into oblivion. It was like the wild west; anything goes.

I'll give another example... car design. Market research has managed to narrow car design down to a very generic form that is not the most beautiful but the least offensive and somewhat pleasant to the most amount of people, to guarantee sales.

Back before such deep market research, designers were artists who would take a risk and design something in their vision. Not everyone would like it. Perhaps the design would be divisive. Ok, some bad ugly cars would come out but there would be some incredible designs. Now, almost every car looks like a generic blob.

Vandals_handle@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 3d (2 replies)

IIRC a lot of the generic blob design is driven by aerodynamics

mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 3d (1 reply)

And optimizing for maximum interior space and comfort for aerodynamics

adwijoma@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 2d

Of course there are practical elements to design. That hasn't changed. We didn't suddenly discover aerodynamics when cars became blobs toward the 2nd half of the 90s. It's been a factor in car design for a very long time, so this does not negate my point at all.

My original point was to negate the notion that the claim of things being better in the past was unfounded.

Of course, there are examples of mediums and things being better more recently, such as animated TV series. The quality of today's far outshines that of 30 years ago, for example.

But some of the most culturally important areas were better previously. Music and film clearly are important elements of culture.

octobob@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 2d

You realize there is incredibly varied, deep, impossibly different and complex music being made all over the world at all times right? In my small-ish city I can see a different show every single night, made up of mostly local and touring artists in small DIY venues that are 100 people or less. And just to show you I'm not bullshitting: https://arcane.city/

The advent of the internet has exploded creativity in so many different ways. Bands starting out can connect with other artists and fans in a DIY sense and play local gigs or tour without any kind of funding or record deals from corporate interests or private equity. Hell, I've gone to "clubs" that were like an old auto body shop ran by my friends, absolutely way past capacity in the hood, to see my partner open for acts from Kenya or at a tiny bar that had a really sick grindcore band from Brazil. It's hard to say things like that happened regularly back in the day but who knows

And it's not like people still don't get big. I saw Alex G play in like backyards and tiny venues 12 years ago and now he plays one of the biggest venues in my city when they tour.

The view that music is washed up now just because the radio plays the same songs is pretty narrow. There was plenty of crap same-y boring music on the radio back then too. There's a reason why all the rockers you're talking about hated disco lol.

The creative types are always going to keep seeking out this type of thing and flourish. You could say the same about underground hip hop and rap, the club scene, punk, hardcore, jazz, EDM, folk, etc etc.

"Marvel/DC movies BAD."

They're products aimed at children with the intention of selling other related products. The fact that some biological adults love them excessively in certain communities/cultures says something about those groups, but doesn't change the nature of the films themselves. What exactly did you expect?!

architect@thelemmy.club · 9 pts · 2d

Eh I think they are more aimed at adults just by the way they are marketed including the toys which mostly make money in the adult collectors market. They just give the excuse to bring kids.

scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech · 6 pts · 3d (1 reply)

Agree, and as an adult who enjoys comic book movies. I also like really good cinema. Liking good movies does not mean movies that aren't winning Oscars are all bad. It means you're just a gatekeeper.

I can sit down and watch a movie like the Brutalist or the Whale absolutely lose my shit at them.

But sometimes I don't feel like being emotionally destroyed and just want good guys punching bad guys with predictable plot.

Humans are complex and sometimes you may like one and other times the other, there is no "you can't like X movie". Only gatekeepers think that way.

ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 3d

I agree to a great degree. And expectations should be adjusted accordingly. I remember having a great time watching Thor: Ragnarok, not because it was beautiful art that made me reflect and cry and whatnot but because it was fun! And not extremely dumb, lol, and that's all we can ask from these movies. Rarely do people only enjoy things with a lot of depth and complexity, and even if you're like that about movies, are you the same about music? Food? You've never enjoyed a greasy burger? So yeah there's no need to hate on them, and no need to expect more from them either (but if it happens it's always a nice surprise!). ✌️

architect@thelemmy.club · 2 pts · 2d (1 reply)

They weren’t originally written for children. The writers were writing their trauma and what they were experiencing at the time for other adults. In fact the readers back then were average of college aged. You may think these comics were written for children because you think their writers were good at writing but actually they were mostly weak writers. Like Stan Lee originally wrote romance. He was a weak writer. Excellent worldbuilder, though.

Comics now are still mainly written for adults.

I’m not a fan of Watchmen in general, because I’m also just not a fan of Alan Moore in general, but they are the kind of people who work well together, so I’m willing give it to him, Zack Snyder is the guy for those movies. Same goes for Miller. He could also do a good job with the works of Garth Ennis. Regardless of my personal feelings on all of those folks.

Edit: Also, just like what you like and enjoy it, I have my opinions, but don’t let some douchebag on the internet make you question what you like. The heart wants what the heart wants. (With caveats, nothing is universal.)

rmuk@feddit.uk · 10 pts · 2d

I kinda feel that "plain black coffee" in it's various forms - Americano, drip brew, whatever - is the only way to actually drink coffee. LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 2d

People tend to think that dark roasts/more bitter coffees are "stronger". They actually have slightly less caffeine, as the longer the beans are roasted and higher temperatures they are cooked at naturally cooks off some.

Because we live in a country full of food deserts where the only option is fast food.

BlameThePeacock@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 3d (7 replies)

This is just such a bad way of thinking.

Why does everyone thing that fresh fruits and vegetables are the only way to eat healthy? Fresh is good, but there are plenty of healthy foods that are not fresh. Until we had refrigerators, humans didn't eat a lot of fresh fruit or vegetables for half of the year.

You can be healthy eating rice and beans, using frozen or canned vegetables too add even more nutrition. All of which can be obtained pretty much anywhere, including food deserts, and stored for long periods of time easily.

You can literally dump a bunch of shit into a crock pot, go work a double shift, then come back and have dinner ready. So don't give me "it's too hard to cook."

It's cheaper than fast food by a significant margin.

People buy fast food because it tastes good, full of fat and salt and sugar. Food deserts exist BECAUSE people choose not to prep their own food.

BlameThePeacock@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 2d

I wouldn't have the opportunity or energy to plan ahead if I didn't plan ahead.

I know people work hard, I grew up in a single parent household with a full time working mother. She still cooked us dinner and didn't get us fast food frequently. Lots of easy casseroles and such, but it was healthy and filling. Most importantly it was cheaper.

I keep seeing these people complaining about being poor when they're ordering fast food for dinner for a family of 4. That person just worked 4-6 hours at a job to pay for that dinner. They would have saved time and money by working less and cooking more.

That situation doesn't need kindness, it needs a reality check.

Modern music is fine.

I think one of the least self-aware thoughts someone can express - and that I hear often - is that "music now isn't as good as it was in ", then they'll go on to name the top five acts of that decade. Go back in time and listen to the track that was at number 53 in the charts on some boring week in mid-August in that decade and it'll almost certainly be absolutely tepid mediocrepeice made by a forgotten artist and no better than the song that was playing on the radio that caused the comment in the first place. By the time that Josephine was coaxed onto that Flying Machine pop music had long been established as a commercial product to be produced at industrial scales. No-one alive today grew up in a generation that had exclusive access to "real music", and if anyone tries to use that phrase to describe Motown in particular you have my permission to stab them in their eyes with a spoon.

lilith267@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 6 pts · 2d (2 replies)

This and people complaining when they only listen to the top 50 songs. "Nobody makes good insert genera here anymore! They do, their just below 1k listens. The insane amount of talent below the 100k and even the 1k listens mark is insane and I often find myself going "how the fuck does this perfect to me song only have 1k listens!"

AndyMFK@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 2d (1 reply)

You're completely right, there's an insane amount of incredible music made in the last 20 years, it's just not popular. You can't find it on the radio or in the charts, you have to find it like a hidden treasure.

rmuk@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 23h

This is why I love radio stations like BBC Radio 6. While they enforce a John Peel styled A-B-C playlist, their DJs are still given a lot of freedom to play their own choices. Without exception they're all well-informed and enthusiastic music fans with a love of specific genres and, more often than not, musicians or producers themselves.

BigPotato@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

Motown is real music.

Real music, made by real people, at the very least. Is all of it great music? By no means, but I've got piles of 45s that prove it is real.

Unless... I'm not real, that is. A distinct possibility, to be sure.

Tattorack@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

Meh. I don't have this. Just feels like modern music hasn't evolved since 2008. I've listened to annoying pop songs from back then, and annoying pop songs from today, and it's just... The same.

There's a distinct difference between 80s, 90s, and 00s music that also seems to follow what technology is capable of. That has grown stagnant.

But then hey, my favourite genres are jazz and funk. Those can get wildly creative with limitations.

I recall some Roman writer complaining about the worthlessness of the youth and how Rome was doomed.

Just before a boom of conquest.

Moralising elders waxing nostaltic have probably been around longer than preserved writing.

Edit: it was Horace:

aetas parentum, peior avis, tulit nos nequiores, mox daturos progeniem vitiosiorem.

Our parents' era, worse than their ancestors, bore us still worse, and soon we will give more wicked offspring.

Text and translation obtained via Wikisource: Horace, Odes 3.6, published 24 or 23 BCE, during the earlier years of the reign of Octavian Augustus.

We could argue about the quality of a youth that bowed to what would be a monarch in all but name, but it's hard to deny their courage and effectiveness in battle, which would have been an important virtue in Rome at the time. That "wicked offspring" stabilised an Empire wracked by decades of civil war and unrest, expanded it and by Horace's standards should have been quite honourable.

(Note: this is not an endorsement, just commentary on the mentalities of the time)

RBWells@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d

Kids seem so much nicer than when I was a kid. My kids' friends would sit and talk to me, when I went to get them from school I would get random kids saying stuff like "you are x's mom? They are so cool!" "Your outfit is pretty!" I would never, ever have said that to a mom at school.

I don't just think they are not worse, I think they are better than we were.

Automobile rear window tints should be banned outright

Tiral@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 3d (4 replies)

Illinois is crazy. So here you have two main options, you can black out your back window and the side back windows if it's a 4 door or those little side backseat windows in a 2 door. Or you can do 35% all around, besides the windshield.

subignition@fedia.io · 2 pts · 2d (2 replies)

Personally I would take inspiration from Tennessee's laws on the subject, but just the part where you can have any darkness above the AS1 line. Have some comparable equivalent (top 2-3 inches) of all windows allow whatever darkness to get the sun out of your eyes, then the remainder of the windows should be tint free. It's really annoying when rear windows are so tinted that you can't even see the brake lights of the next car in line through the car ahead of you.

LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2d (1 reply)

Ah I was thinking you must have lived somewhere else because you can rent say a Uhaul in every state I figured, and they clearly don't even have rear windows. I too prefer to be able to see the lights through the vehicle in front of me but I'm not so sure I think my preference there should override others choice of privacy. I'd like to think it is the safer option though

subignition@fedia.io · 1 pts · 2d

Nothing to be done about opaque vehicles like box trucks and work vans unfortunately. But if you're driving on public roads you are in public, and should not have an expectation of privacy.

FlexibleToast@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2d

It's even more complicated than you made it sound

You can install 35% VLT on all windows (except windshield).

All windows behind driver can legally have any tint percent, but only if front side windows are not tinted.

Front side windows may have 50% light transmission, but only if no window behind driver is tinted under 30% VLT.

On vehicles with factory-installed window tint of any darkness on any back window, front side windows must have over 50% VLT

I remember tracking the bill through the state congress that allowed the front windows to be tinted. I immediately went and got my 35% all around when it became legal.

mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 3d (5 replies)

Especially if there's a clear stating of "if you continue doing [bad behavior] you're going to be spanked" and the kid keeps doing it.

When I was a kid, I got warnings before getting spanked. If there's a clear line drawn and you continue crossing it you should get some kind of punishment.

That being said, I view spanking as the nuclear option nowadays. It needs to be a "credible threat" (aka an actual option), but you want to avoid escalating to that point because there's nothing else to escalate to.

EvenOdds@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 3d (4 replies)

Strong disagree from me. Using violence as a deterrent teaches kids that it's OK to use violence against others in the future. Does it work immediately? Yes. Does it do long term damage? Also yes.

The subconscious correlation between "being right" and "being the strongest" is a source of a huge amount of problems.

I never once threatened violence or used any sort of violence against my kids, and they never used violence as they grew up.

This is probably the real unpopular opinion though, I don't expect many people to agree with me on this one!

Feathercrown@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 3d

I think that's a reasonable take but I do disagree. Violence is necessary sometimes. You should always aim to avoid violence, but if the other party is not able to resolve conflicts without it, you have to be able and willing to use it as a fallback. If you examine how people operate in situations where nonviolence is not an option, you will notice they suddenly become okay with violence. What is pretty universally recognized as bad is using violence when it's not necessary.

TL;DR: Speak softly and carry a big stick

promitheas@programming.dev · 4 pts · 3d

I'll disagree with your point on violence teaching violence. I was spanked as a child, and even hit with belts etc (balkan parents) and yet now in my adult life I avoid violence whenever possible and believe it is wrong in 95% of cases. However that means theres 5% where it is unavoidable, and even necessary.

Also I would counter this argument by saying that if we teach people that violence is never the answer, we raise them to be the kind of people who will let others step all over them (an extreme example is peaceful protestesters against corrupt/outright evil governments - unfortunately it doesnt work most of the time). Now does that mean we should teach that violence is the easy solution you should jump to from the get go? No. It should be stressed that it is only for situations where there is no alternative and the transgression is severe enough to warrant a severe reaction/consequences. So for example, no matter how many times a parent tells their child to do the laundry and they don't, violence isnt the proportionate consequence. However if a parent catches their kid bullying or endangering others, then yes the "crime" is severe enough in my opinion to warrant a violent response if the child repeatedly engages in that behaviour.

Using violence as a deterrent teaches kids that it's OK to use violence against others in the future.

Except as others have pointed out, there's cases where a violent response (or the possibility of one) is necessary. There's a couple of good adages on the subject:

It's better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war

A man that is incapable of fighting isn't peaceful, he's helpless

And like one of the other responders, I was spanked as a child but that didn't lead me to resolving problems with violence as an adult.

I never once threatened violence or used any sort of violence against my kids, and they never used violence as they grew up.

Tbh, that sounds more like they were fortunate enough to never be in a situation that required violence

Lemon is always best, except when it's lime. But I don't eat limes, just squeeze them for juice, so lemons still rank higher.

People and groups generally are not inherently evil, and if you pay a little bit of attention, their actions are almost always logical to them (even if they are evil actions).

A lot of people might think they agree with that...but start naming people and groups and they will call you names pretty quickly.

I love pineapple on pizza, but I only get it if getting slices for my self or with someone else that likes it.

If ordering blind for a group, it's 1 cheese and 1 pepperoni. If I'm giving the group options it's pick between cheese, supreme, meat lovers and pepperoni (if any one can't eat meat, cheese is forced). If they can't decide, fuck it we're getting pineapple /s

"The Beatles are overrated"

Not only is it untrue, but even if you don't like their music you're an idiot if you can't see their influence.

Tattorack@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 1d (11 replies)

I see more influence from Jazz, and other genres of black origin, than anything the Beatles have come up with.

JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip · -5 pts · 1d (10 replies)

That's because you refuse to see their influence.

Bytemeister@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 1d (22 replies)

Still overrated. Right place, right time. If it wasn't them, it could have just as easily been someone else.

JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip · -5 pts · 1d (21 replies)

Contrarianism doesn't make up for a lack of personality. You not liking something doesn't make it overrated.

Bytemeister@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d (4 replies)

True. But a lot of people praising something more than merited does.

Even if they got given the plane, they are still great pilots. Every album is novel and there are so many.

Bane_Killgrind@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 1d

You're so mean

JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip · -5 pts · 1d

I don't think this person will admit that. They've convinced themselves that they know more about it than pretty much every artist that came after the Beatles.

Tattorack@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d (11 replies)

The Beatles are overrated and liking them to the degree you do shows a lack of originality.

JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip · -6 pts · 1d (10 replies)

Because being a contrarian is so original in today's world. If you were smart enough to know how dumb you sound you'd be embarrassed.

Tattorack@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 1d (9 replies)

I'm not contrarian. I've never thought much of the Beatles. It wasn't until they got their own whole band game (back when those were popular) that I realised Beatles were somehow enjoyed by more than just really old people.

JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip · -4 pts · 1d (8 replies)

Okay, but that's down to your taste, which has nothing to do with if they're overrated or not.

Tattorack@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 22h

Yeah, I'm starting to think you don't know what "overrated" means.

TranscendentalEmpire@lemmy.today · 0 pts · 1d (2 replies)

I think the dispute is over what defines overrated. I think they can be aptly called overated if you are looking at the technical aspects of the actual music they wrote.

But if we're defining it by influence on a genre or era of music then it would be hard to make the same claim.

JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip · -3 pts · 1d (1 reply)

By no metric can the amount of classic albums they put out in a 5 year span be considered overrated.

TranscendentalEmpire@lemmy.today · 0 pts · 1d

Yes, but that is again another metric by which to judge. The amount of albums does not affect the technical complexity of the music. And I am by no means trying to claim that music needs to be technically advanced to be good, it's just another way in which an individual could possibly be judging if something is or isn't overated. The quality of the music itself is always going to be subjective, while the cultural impact of the music is not. So I can see both sides of the argument.

Christianity has a large user base but is unpopular. Jesus is the living God and through him is the only way to the Father. He didn't come just to forgive us and get us into heaven, but for the kingdom of God to break into every area of life here and now - health, peace, justice and more. We won't see the fullness until his return but he already came out of the grave once and he said he is coming back. Biblical timelines say we should expect him relatively soon.

Tattorack@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Yeah, hasn't it been a few centuries of this guy coming "relatively soon". At that point I have to ask, relative to what? Human civilisation or the motion of entropy?

doingthestuff@lemy.lol · 0 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Biblically there was 2000 years between Jesus and Abraham, and another 2000 years between Abraham and Adam. Two thousand years after Jesus' crucifixion is coming up within a handful of years. That's six Biblical "days", and God rested on the 7th day. There's more to the timing people look to based on old prophecy but a lot of things line up for the next maybe fifty years. I'm no expert, but a lot of Christians believe this.

Tattorack@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

A lot of Christians believe a lot of things, most of it silly and untrue.

Your calculations are based on something that has already been thought of way back in the 1800s. And these guys are still waiting around for the second coming and the end times, despite every prediction they made never coming true.

FewerWheels@mander.xyz · 2 pts · 1d (3 replies)

Your first sentence is self contradictory.

doingthestuff@lemy.lol · 0 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Christians are a large group of people and at the same time a global minority. They can be at the same time a significant group and also looked down on by the majority.

FewerWheels@mander.xyz · 1 pts · 1d

If billions of followers doesn't make something popular, then nothing does. One of the beauties of Christianity is the a la carte menu and they all get to pick what they want to believe and still call themselves Christian. Christianity is both popular and ridiculous.
