Jimmy Kimmel will return to air on Tuesday after his show was suspended following comments he made about the death of Charlie Kirk, Disney has said in a statement released in the last few moments.
"Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country," the statement says.
"It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday."

Disney is trying to get a monster merger pushed through. And here's the Chairman of the FCC directly threatening them?
entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org · 12 pts · 328d
It wasn't Disney who have the merger, it was NexStar, an owner of some 39% of local TV stations, that's trying to merge with another company to control 80% of local stations. Current law dictates the limit to 39%, so the federal government has them over a barrel. After the FCC chairman directly told them what to do on a podcast, Nexstar did exactly that and threatened to refuse to air Kimmel if Disney didn't kill the show. Disney did, and now they've capitulated to an actual massive groundswell of Disney+ cancelations. Thus the flip-flop.
So not only was there blatant corruption in both the private and public sector in a more or less open conspiracy to give a bribe to allow a violation of federal law, but by saying what he said, the FCC chairman also pretty clearly violated the first amendment of the constitution of the US.

jj4211@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 328d
Colbert was given most of a season to carry on and all involved had a long time to figure out options, and there weren't explicit overt threats from government. "How bad could it be if they are letting him keep saying everything he wants for months?". Also people looking to to throw money at South Park which was been gloves off against Trump.
Kimmel was sudden and with direct specific threats from the government during such a contentuous time.

Target did the same thing. They pissed off both sides and have been hurting for quite a while now.
sparky@lemmy.federate.cc · 6 pts · 328d
I am out of the loop (by which I mean hi from Europe), what did target do?
bagsy@lemmy.world · 31 pts · 328d
Target was a big proponent of DEI and LGBTQ+. It was part of the brand and hiring practices. Then, after the orange plauge was inaugurated, they switched their tune. Tgey dropped all their DEI policies and all LGBTQ marketing.
They are down 50% this year.
https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/TGT/
TheseusNow@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 327d
Target was showing its true colors long before getting rid of DEI practices. Like at one point they had a gay pride line that really just felt like grift then some people took offense to it and they put it all on clearance and moved it to a remote corner of the store. This was soon after unveiling it, not after it sat there a while. Its no wonder they acted the way they did. They just saw liberals and progressives as a way to profit. People got tired of the grift with no real championship towards better attitudes and practices to minorities and boycotted them hard.

BassTurd@lemmy.world · 27 pts · 328d
That's exactly what happened to Bud Light. Bigots hated that BL was partnering with a filthy trans person, and when they caved to the pressure everyone else said "fuck you" but the bigots didn't all come back. It's kind of like Target as well. Present this image of being for the minorities, and then caving under the smallest amount of pressure pissing off everyone.

psycho_driver@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 328d
I have a feeling Kimmel isn't going to be forced to say anything. He (rightfully) despises Trump with every fiber of his soul and would probably choose to stay off the air rather than bend the knee in any way.
3abas@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 328d
I think you're lionizing Kimmel a bit too much, he just said a few obvious jokes that was likely written by his writing staff. He didn't say anything brave.
"we’re still trying to wrap our heads around the senseless murder of the popular podcaster and conservative activist Charlie Kirk yesterday... Some people are cheering this, which is something I won’t ever understand.”
Those who hate Trump and his rhetoric immediately understand why Nazi fascist deaths are celebrated. They don't describe them as senseless while heaping unnecessary praise on them. "Popular activist"? How about racist fascist propagandist?
He'll toe the line after this correction. Ping me with his return monologue if I'm wrong.

I've watched it. He described Kirk as a young man, choked up while pronouncing violence is never an answer, and praised Howard Stern as a role model of his.
You think that's brave in the face of Nazis?
psycho_driver@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 326d
And talked shit about the administration the whole time, which is what this was about in the first place.
3abas@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 326d
Yet he went on and on about how wonderful the Nazis in his life are and how much he loves and looks up to them.
You felt it was adequate? You were satisfied just because he made fun of Trump and his administration?
Normalizing peace with Nazis and denouncing violence as a solution isn't brave, would have been better to just be quiet. The country needs a revolution, not normalizing hanging out and loving Nazis. Cut the cancer out, these people need to be cast out of society, not praised and consoled when their own actions catch up to them.
First they came for the communists and all that... When they come to you, they'll be no one left because you decided to have dinner parties with the Nazis.

And your daughter well plead with you to get disney so she can watch pretty princesses and if you cave, then your son will grow up racist.
When fox pulls this shit they are fine, because sane people aren't watching anyway. The only reason disney backed down is that it hurt them. If no one goes back, it can't possibly hurt them a second time.
But absolutely you sold do what toy want with your money and if this was a permanent deal breaker for you, go ahead and permanently reject them. I'm OK with that, really, but I can't pretend that you'll have ongoing influence on their future decision making at the same time.

They know the tremendous power of strong propaganda, they have been developing the Conservative Propaganda Machine for decades.
They see this Blue Line at 11:30 pm, following the local news, and they know that even MAGAs, who tuned away from Fox News for a half hour to hear what happened in town, might accidentally end up staying tuned in, and hearing Colbert and Kimmel making fun of him.
They are far more than just comedians, they are chipping away at the wall in the brains of MAGA citizens. Every night they expose him for the buffoon he is, and eventually he is going to do something that even their MAGA followers think is buffoonery, and an entire brick will fall out of the wall. Once that happens, steady pressure will eventually make it crumble.
The Conservative Propaganda Machine understands all of this, and more. They have data tracking behavioral responses going back decades, and they have ALWAYS been hostile to the late night talk shows. Rather than adjust their behavior to reflect the rest of society, and thus avoid humiliation for their poor decisions, they would rather kill the messenger.

I wrote a very angry letter, letting them know that I was switching my news source, cancelling Hulu, and in the future, I would pirate their content, and watch it without commercials.
That's three revenue-sucking situations that every network hates, and it worked, they caved.
I also told them that I expect them to hold the line on free speech, and if Trump threatens to remove their FCC license, dare him to do it. That FCC license gives them a responsibility to this nation. Folding like they tried to do is unacceptable.

So you saved jimmy's show?
FosterMolasses@leminal.space · 17 pts · 327d
I believe the implication was that a significant amount of other people also did this.
Mr_Dr_Oink@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 327d
No, thats fairm i was needlessly pointing out how it seemed like they were taking credit for the whole thing. It was supposed to be a joke but looking back, it wasn't very funny.
BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 327d
Yep, single-handedly.
No, of course not. But ALL corporations understand that one person that takes the time to write a coherent, logical letter, and doesn't threaten sexual violence against their daughters and elderly relatives, represent, and are speaking for, a very large number of people who are just sitting at home, pissed off and talking to their families.
Get enough of those letters, and the data analysis people in Marketing start getting extremely nervous. That's what happened here. In fact, the walls crumbled so quickly, that they must have received an overwhelming amount of angry communications.

Also like why does the FCC license even matter anymore? For the three people left still watching ABC over the air?

Sept 17th.
Nexstar and Sinclair television station owners condem Kimmel’s statements. They planned to preempt his show replacing it with other programming.
ABC decides to suspend Kimmel’s show indefinitely due to the backlash.
Here is the question. If ABC/Disney reinstate his show, will Nexstar or Sinclair follow through on their promise to preempt his show when it airs effectively killing any ad revenue?
Edit addendum: Sinclair Will Not Air ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Upon ABC Return Tuesday
That’s gonna make it hard to sell ad space on the next upfronts.

Curious to find out! Probably back channel talks happening now
slaacaa@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 328d
Yeah, they probably use this opportunity to get a better deal from ABC, while pretending to be upset about Kimmel

I think we will confirm how little revenue is generated by broadcast TV.

Key now is getting back to tying Trump to Epstein and Maxwell and call for the unaltered release of the Epstein files which was HIS OWN BROKEN PROMISE.
Keep pushing this message as it is one of the only messages that has induced a modicum of doubt in his core base, let alone swing-voters.
His approval-ratings have now fallen to Jimmy Carter levels, and we can get lower.

As much as it still hurts when companies walk back their decisions, it's really important as consumers that we also walk back our decision on supporting them. If we always stop supporting them regardless, they will continue to make decisions that don't support the people. It's important that we have power in these scenario. In the end, it's better that Kimmel is back on the air, and that he can joke and criticize what's happening. Let's support them walking it back.

Just putting him back isn't enough if he seems muzzled. We'll see.
explodicle@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 327d
I think a partial return is fair. They shouldn't pull this shit in the first place, and switching costs can be significant. If you've already gone to the trouble of setting up a Jellyfin server, then Disney has fucked around and found out.

Wow, I guess the people still have some power! It’s stupid though because the damage is done. A lot of those people aren’t gonna resubscribe.

I mean at the very least, hopefully they (and others Trump inevitably goes after) won't be so willing to cave to authoritarian demands without a fight.
That's kind of the way this all works. If even the people that could definitely afford to fight this in court signal they're willing to just comply, then there's no hope for everyone else.
I think John Oliver put it best when he said the response should have been, and should always be going forward "Fuck you, make me."
hotdogcharmer@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 327d
Wait, so why wouldn't they (and others trump goes after) be willing to cave without a fight?
We just watched them cave immediately without a fight, and then revert their decision after having "thoughtful conversations" behind the scenes that we're not privy to.
We haven't seen any victory, any pushback against this trampling of free speech, any principled disagreement. We've seen an immediate kowtowing.
I don't know what those conversations behind the scenes entailed. I don't know the future. But I'm going to predict the show that gets returned to air will be (even more) neutered. They won't upset the administration again.
AcidiclyBasicGlitch@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 327d
We'll see what he does when he returned, but Trump is definitely pissy he didn't get his way.
They demanded Kimmel be forced to apologize and I think pay money to the Charlie Kirk foundation. He did neither but for some reason his cancellation lasted less than a week.
They have the money and lawyers to fight this, they just didn't want the hassle. Suddenly when it looked like it would be cutting into their profits they found the motivation to fight back.
We also haven't heard from Carr as far as I know. This could still end up in court unless Carr is willing to just back down.

Perfectly executed publicity stunt
Saffire@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 328d
Publicity stunt by Disney? Do they really need publicity? They are Disney, the most publicized company of all time.
commiunism@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 0 pts · 328d
Not for Disney, they don't need the publicity. Jimmy Kimmel's show on the other hand would benefit drastically - just look at the publicity he's been getting for the past week.
explodicle@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 327d
Guessing that this comment would even get him in trouble - and within the threshold to be reinstated - would be astronomically difficult.

explodicle@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 327d
Good. Switching costs go both ways, there was probably someone who should've canceled but didn't.
If they wanted your money, they never should've canceled Jimmy to begin with.

Well, they took away Kimmel, we unsubscribed. They brought Kimmel back, we subscribe. Makes sense.
We've seen it works, but if we remain unsubscribed, next time around we won't have anything to threaten them with.
Not to mention we should reward good behaviour, innit? Ain't that how it works? Punish bad behaviour, reward good behaviour
