That's not a marketing issue, that's whoever approved that design. Which, to be fair, may be the marketing boss depending on how their corporate structure is.
It’s definitely not possible to create something that looks exactly like that with modern safety design standards but they are being very stupid by not at least trying to evoke that more in their cars.
Then again, as far as I understand it, rich people are completely detached from my idea of good taste. So we might like the classic designs and the companies might know their customers prefer novelty or “the next big thing” over that kind of continuity
Low volume high end cars usually had a lot of overengineered solutions to problems that are now easily solved in modern budget cars by software and new materials/manufacturing. They could come up with a complicated battery system that gives them more design flexibility if they wanted to. They fucking should frankly.
The one in the pictures had a fuel bladder system IIRC. Not as exotic as figuring out asymmetrical distribution of multiple different sized battery boxes, but they did weird stuff to make their cars all the time. That’s the point of exotic cars that look stupidly different from other cars.
Cars are a weird one because they are a big part of the system of why the world sucks and luxury cars are just absurdly expensive status symbols. But fancy cars used to mean cool engineering! The Ferrari was designed by Jony Ive. It definitely looks like something he would design. He's all about clean, minimalist design where everything is utilitarian.
Ferrari as a brand is about beautiful extravagant design in the fastest and least useful vehicles on the planet.
I can't think of a less synergistic combination that Ferrari and Jony Ive.
Better fits for Jony Ive would be Hyundai, Kia, BMW and Mercedes. Those four are making some ugly ass cars that need to go back to the drawing board.
I don't agree on the Prius. The 2026 version has worse consumption and a smaller trunk so it could look more like any other SUV. People buy these cause they are the best economics for the size and Toyota made it more like "what they think a phev suv should look like". I'd say that's the opposite of your point.
Except BYD cars. One of the reasons the US government is so furiously keeping them out is because their technological superiority to all American cars, including Tesla, would destroy the current American car market. All that and they are ridiculously cheaper.
What's wrong with hatchbacks for you? Is it just the appearance? Genuinely curious. Toyota Crown is a fastback sedan, although it's quite tall and I assume the rear glass is a liftback.
So much of a brand's identity can be carried by the grill and headlights. And on an EV, there's no need for a grill. But just a slab of flat metal looks weird, so they add stuff to break it up.
Drag
The range of an EV is a lot more sensitive to drag than an ICE car.
So in order to reduce the drag, shapes are smoothed out.
Aero efficiency becomes a much bigger priority than looks.
I think you're right, but optimising for drag is going to change all cars into the same thing. If brands want to retain any kind of identifiable look, they need the engineering to give them some slack.
In my view, the EV-drivers are the idiots. Although I'd prefer "ignorants" as those can be smart and dumb.
EVs are almost 100% cloud-cars full with surveillance and subscriptions and everything bad that comes with it.
Not to say EVs are inherently bad, they aren't. I would love one, technically speaking. I also love tech and gadgets. But not this level of remote control over "my" car.
I went from Bentley to cheap dumb cars over the years just because they all do it, some more some less. And EVs are the top of the "modern" shit.
But the "entry-level" cars are still only filled with the basics. Even haptic buttons and dials (beside a damn touchscreen though).
You will own nothing, rent everything, and be happy about. I won't.
Modern ICE cars have the exact same telemetry, even at the lower end models now. There are ways to circumvent some of the monitoring by deliberately terminating their antennas however. It really depends on the model though and whatever documentation regular drivers would be willing to share. My EV was modified this way and now I have a tiny reminder on the corner of the console that it can't connect.
This is all a bandaid of course. We either come up with a gray market of workarounds or we demand legislation to remove this shit in a privacy bill. Considering we have a mandate by Congress starting in 2027 to install AI equipped driver facing cameras to disable the car if the driver even vaguely looks incapacitated shows that it would be a massive uphill battle however.
Terminating antennas doesn't usually work in areas with good cell service. Traces on PCBs are good enough to transmit/receive to towers unless you're in a rural area.
Best bet is to remove the modules that control data collection entirely, if you can for your car.
True, ICEs are not far behind the shittiness. But at least you still can buy NEW cars that don't suck. Ours e.g. now has AC, assheating, rainsensor and android-auto (I know no worthy alternative to being independent to the car's shitty onboard-system. anonymous account, VPN and dedicated phone.)
And yeah, congrats you could "hack" yours, but it's indeed bandaid.
It's just a constant battle you'll loose in the end. Same reason why I gave up on windows and android. I'm tired l, boss.
Youre right in that new cars are all shit. But that goes for ICE and EV.
Rolling surveillance mobiles and unrepairable. Total garbage.
Old (note, old to me means 70s or 60s, but I think younger folks now think 90s is old, so I'll go with that) was better in every way. I'll take a 99 civic over any new car today. Though id say about 2012 is peak if you want more comforts (I do not). Really sucks we allowed the government and corporations to fuck up cars so bad.
True, the ICEs grow more shitty from year to year. But the EVs are made to be "the future". They begin where some ICEs end. Plus you can't really make a totally dumb EVs.
But yes, I loved progress from manually winding windows to electric, or ACs, and even android auto (on an anonymous account on a dedicated phone). But with "going online" and 99% touch instead of haptic, nope. Go fuck yourselves.
We bought some "cheap" cars to test if it would work too. And sticked with a Mitsubishi. No bells, no whistles, only what we really want/need.
You also cant make a totally dumb ICE anymore with safety and emission regulations. If you buy a new car, it will have all the necessary tech in it to track you and send telemetry. It doesn't matter how barebone the car looks unless you personally stripped everything down to the metal and remove every electric component that's not 100% required.
Maybe in the US...here, customers have a tiny bit of rights and protection left.
our car has no such nonsense. Expensive crap has been stripped out.
In this model you can't even get any connected features and we already have the top model of the bottom class 😁
If with "here" you mean anywhere close to the EU market, then I have to dissapoint you. An SOS button is mandatory which then also includes a GPS module.
Only applies to brand-new models. Ours does not have this, despite being just made because the model itself is there for a longer time :-)
Besides, this thing poses no harm at all. It just sends an MSD to the emergency-hotline. That is absolutely helpful. Why would I, or anyone, mind that?
I do mind telemetry and whatnot going to some nasty corporations without my consent. And subscription-based crap due to a constantly connected car. All Shit I don't even want but also have to pay for like the obedient lil consumer-filth that they take me for.
The thing that gets me is when car designers make a car that's trying to be something it's not. It's an EV, not an ICE vehicle. If anything, amplify the motor hum under load (accelerating). Don't simulate engine sounds. We're tired of living in a simulation.
Ferrari has one of the greatest design teams in Pininfarina yet they choose a person famous for making a rounded rect to make a totally new product. This is what they get for their poor choices.
I guess I misremembered then. Once I saw this car, my suspicion is that this may have been the canceled Apple car. My theory is Apple saw how much it cost: or something and decided to sell to Ferrari to recoup some of their investment. Apple's biggest mistake (or saving grace to keep them out of this industry) would have been to not let him design the whole thing and Ferrari was left with this.
Apple constantly produces crap (unless you are talking about looks). Case in point, every single one of their computer mouses.. Even something common sense like placement of the power button eludes them. Their titanium laptops all had flaking paint and failing hinges, etc
They are good at producing good looking items, but, any schmuck could tell them they are overlooking basic BS. The only reason they get away with it, is because they produce a product which SEEMS well manufacturered
And today's Apple isn't yesterday's Apple either or the one from the 2010s. I'm just saying I bet Apple expected another cheese grater or all aluminum design reminiscent of a cybertruck from Ive if they let him design the exterior.
Yeah, I can see that. Sort of my issue with the EV Mustang. It isn't just an EV version of the Mustang. It's a completely different car. Just call it something else. Maybe a different horse breed.
Bro come on. Like the other person said, it doesn't look like a Ferrari. It looks like an econobox. I don't get why it's so hard for them to make it look like a super/hypercar. Nobody wants to spend half a mil (or whatever) on this soccer mom-looking-ass-car.
The issue is that ferrari is only as valuable as it is perceived. If the brand is not thought of as being the best, then the product will not sell well (at the price).
I'll preface this with the fact that I'm not really a "car person", much less someone in the market for a Ferrari. I'd say it looks like a Ferrari from the rear more than the front. Isn't that what you'd expect? It hasn't got a traditional engine in it, so if you designed the front to look more like a traditional Ferrari, you'd have to design it to look like it has a traditional engine, but then form wouldn't follow function, so it would be less beautiful by that standard. If I were a really rich person looking to buy an expensive car, which I'm not, I'd think I might consider it.
Yeah, it looks like something Jony Ive designed... Shortly after the LaFerrari came out they said they'd never do an EV or SUV, which is probably where most of the backlash come from. How the turn tables, eh?
I don't know why they didn't just take a timeless classic Ferrari shell, stick a powerful as fuck EV 'engine' in it, maybe tweak the exterior very slightly, and go to town on the interior. Win.
They bypassed a large chunk of the Ferrari design and engineering and marketing team, who hate it with fierce Italian passion. They think management have betrayed their history
This seems like two unrelated stories. It wasn’t his decision to buy the car, nor did he design it. So it seems unlikely that he’s resigning because people don’t like the design or idea of it
I don't think the car looks bad at all. The outside is a little bland tbf but it's not ugly. I think the interior is incredibly tactile and well thought out. I think when we see people tearing around tracks that preorders are going to be extremely strong
Car actually doesn't look that bad, true. I guess it's just not what people expect when they hear Ferrari. Imho it's one of those cars that won't sell now but in 50 years it will be a sought after rarity.
I’m confused, are people really butthurt because it doesn’t look exactly like every other car Ferrari has put out? This is literally not even the first car they’ve put out that doesn’t look like a classic Ferrari. They literally make a SUV now. Sometimes I feel like people are just upset whenever a company that traditionally makes ICE cars all of a sudden start making an EV.
Slapping their name on a dumpy SUV was a a stupid cash grab too. For me, the difference is that I expected it to be a dumpy cash grab to separate mcmansioners from their poolhouse money.
If Ferrari said "we're going to release a little electric, suburban grocery-getter", my response would have been "well that looks about right". Just like with the SUV.
When I hear Ferrari is releasing their "first electric car" my mind immediately starts thinking about what kind of little mean monster they could release with all that torque. I am disappointed when I see what looks like another dumpy cash grab, but this one is for missy mcmansion to take to her first day of college.
But then again, I care for speed alone. The scream of an ic engine is neat but to me, secondary. There are probably plenty of gasheads who are just pissy because "electricity is liberal" or something.
I’m not really sure how to respond to this. On the one hand Ferrari went public recently so this should’ve been more expected. On the other hand your use of the term missy mcmansion takes this comment a little too far into the sexist realm for me. I didn’t want to believe that people actually had a problem with this thing not looking “macho” but I guess that’s the world we live in.
In the meantime it can still do 0 to 60 in like two seconds…
It's not sexist to think it looks like a car for people who want a cute, little compact car that lets everyone know they have scratch. That's just what it looks like.
"Missy mcmansion" could easily be a young man who wants those things in a car. He will likely embrace the term because he doesn't think women and their associated descriptors are inherently "less than". This looks looks like a car for a cute purse, a blowout, and a manicure.
I didn't use "missy" to denigrate. I used it as marker for lifestyle choices regardless of sex or gender. You certainly picked up on my dripping distaste, but it's because I think the car looks silly, just like the SUV, and neither fit my lifestyle choices. When I think the big matcho SUV is dumb, am I being sexist?
If it makes you feel any better, I always loved the Miata, because it looks like she's got skin under her nails, cute but not to be played with lightly, and that fits my aesthetic just fine.
Edit: lol, you're mad because I said "bottom energy" and you thought "woman energy" and had to put your misogynistic thoughts on me to make yourself feel better after I explained it 😝
If you can’t understand why “gas heads” prefer ICE cars over EVs, you aren’t a car person. That’s fine, but don’t pretend to know why they prefer ICEs.
Eh, they make boring looking SUVs, and a good chunk of their lineup is just expensive sporty sedans coupes. Not really surprised they’re making an EV, but it’s pretty ugly.
Guess they wanted a “unwanted stepchild” that couldn’t be associated with the design style of the rest of the fleet. They certainly succeeded with that.
Edit: apparently I’ve woken the Ferrari fans.
The Purosangue is an SUV. A sedan can be either two or four door for the record. You’ll have to forgive my casual use of “sedan”, it should be coupe or similar.
Umm... I don't think Ferrari makes either SUVs or sedans. You might try calling one of their models an SUV if you are really stretching the definition. Only one of their cars in their entire history has had 4 doors.
Just bc you used or “collaborated with Jonny Ivey” or whatever his name is. Doesn’t make me think this car is more aerodynamic - I highly doubt my iPhone is aerodynamic (except when I drop it accidentally¿)
Aww I think it looks cool. I get that people don’t like change; but it’s not like they’ve stopped making the other ones. Feel bad for them; I don’t think its the best use of collective action to punish new ideas that are way down the totem pole of evil in this world.
Ferraris have soul, they're exciting, they look fast standing still. This thing looks fine as a standard passenger EV but it is no Ferrari. People are telling them exactly that, collectively.
I don't think people would have minded very much if they had taken one of their existing chassis and swapped it for an electric drivetrain, but kept the design mostly the same.
This thing looks fine as a standard passenger EV
I'd honestly disagree there. It looks like someone wearing oversized clothes, which isn't helped by its colour scheme.
It stands out in a bad way, compared to a modern passenger EV, which arguably looks nicer because it's less awkward.

RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 65d
2024 and 2026 Prius both show 57/56 city/highway economy on fueleconomy.gov for the most economic models. The 2022 shows 54/50, the 2019 58/53.
So it looks like average economy has improved.
As for cargo, that’s unfortunate to lose space, but if they can get more people to buy the car because it looks more “normal” then that’s better, no?

buddascrayon@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 64d
I just don't like that style of car.
GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 65d
There's two big reasons.
No front grill
So much of a brand's identity can be carried by the grill and headlights. And on an EV, there's no need for a grill. But just a slab of flat metal looks weird, so they add stuff to break it up.
Drag
The range of an EV is a lot more sensitive to drag than an ICE car.
So in order to reduce the drag, shapes are smoothed out.
Aero efficiency becomes a much bigger priority than looks.
wewbull@feddit.uk · 3 pts · 64d
I think you're right, but optimising for drag is going to change all cars into the same thing. If brands want to retain any kind of identifiable look, they need the engineering to give them some slack.
jj4211@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 64d
The front grill isn't a problem for Ferrari design language. The 296 "grill" is mostly the haunches. An electric 296 would just flatten that out.
Similar story on drag, once you get rid of the mid engine air intake, drag would probably be within respectable drag for EV.
Questions would be about if they want a lot of battery range. This would screw up weight and ride height.

Dyskolos@lemmy.zip · -38 pts · 65d
I won't.
Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 29 pts · 65d
Modern ICE cars have the exact same telemetry, even at the lower end models now. There are ways to circumvent some of the monitoring by deliberately terminating their antennas however. It really depends on the model though and whatever documentation regular drivers would be willing to share. My EV was modified this way and now I have a tiny reminder on the corner of the console that it can't connect.
This is all a bandaid of course. We either come up with a gray market of workarounds or we demand legislation to remove this shit in a privacy bill. Considering we have a mandate by Congress starting in 2027 to install AI equipped driver facing cameras to disable the car if the driver even vaguely looks incapacitated shows that it would be a massive uphill battle however.
pishadoot@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 64d
Terminating antennas doesn't usually work in areas with good cell service. Traces on PCBs are good enough to transmit/receive to towers unless you're in a rural area.
Best bet is to remove the modules that control data collection entirely, if you can for your car.
Dyskolos@lemmy.zip · -3 pts · 65d
True, ICEs are not far behind the shittiness. But at least you still can buy NEW cars that don't suck. Ours e.g. now has AC, assheating, rainsensor and android-auto (I know no worthy alternative to being independent to the car's shitty onboard-system. anonymous account, VPN and dedicated phone.)
And yeah, congrats you could "hack" yours, but it's indeed bandaid. It's just a constant battle you'll loose in the end. Same reason why I gave up on windows and android. I'm tired l, boss.

Dyskolos@lemmy.zip · -1 pts · 65d
True, the ICEs grow more shitty from year to year. But the EVs are made to be "the future". They begin where some ICEs end. Plus you can't really make a totally dumb EVs.
But yes, I loved progress from manually winding windows to electric, or ACs, and even android auto (on an anonymous account on a dedicated phone). But with "going online" and 99% touch instead of haptic, nope. Go fuck yourselves.
We bought some "cheap" cars to test if it would work too. And sticked with a Mitsubishi. No bells, no whistles, only what we really want/need.
Jako302@feddit.org · 1 pts · 65d
You also cant make a totally dumb ICE anymore with safety and emission regulations. If you buy a new car, it will have all the necessary tech in it to track you and send telemetry. It doesn't matter how barebone the car looks unless you personally stripped everything down to the metal and remove every electric component that's not 100% required.
Dyskolos@lemmy.zip · 0 pts · 64d
Maybe in the US...here, customers have a tiny bit of rights and protection left. our car has no such nonsense. Expensive crap has been stripped out. In this model you can't even get any connected features and we already have the top model of the bottom class 😁

Only applies to brand-new models. Ours does not have this, despite being just made because the model itself is there for a longer time :-) Besides, this thing poses no harm at all.

This is literally not even the first car they’ve put out that doesn’t look like a classic Ferrari. They literally make a SUV now. Sometimes I feel like people are just upset whenever a company that traditionally makes ICE cars all of a sudden start making an EV.
Nouvellalia@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 65d
There are probably plenty of gasheads who are just pissy because "electricity is liberal" or something.
atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 65d
I’m not really sure how to respond to this. On the one hand Ferrari went public recently so this should’ve been more expected. On the other hand your use of the term missy mcmansion takes this comment a little too far into the sexist realm for me. I didn’t want to believe that people actually had a problem with this thing not looking “macho” but I guess that’s the world we live in.
In the meantime it can still do 0 to 60 in like two seconds…
Nouvellalia@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 65d
