Oh, that's bad. I didn't know they would block VPNs. There was an option to detect unique users, and I chose by IP (but with option Anonymize voter data). For anyone else, I guess the comment section is the only way to express opinion then. Edit: Why the downvote?

But this was just an explanation. Why downvote an explanation? I did not decide to block VPNs, in fact I thought it is possible to vote multiple times by using the option "by IP". It's the first time I used this website. And by looking at it again, I can see there is an option that says "Block VPN users" and I simply did not see it when creating and left it the default option. So blocking VPN users is an accident here, because of my incompetence, not because I decided to block them with intentions.
I use VPNs myself often, especially with YouTube, and would not wanted to have them blocked here. My apologies.

I tried 4 and 5 for a few hours each and the mechanics are all very mid. I have no idea how this series became the juggernaut it did. To me it's as surprising as some random mobile game blowing up, like Angry Birds or Flappy Bird

I don't think I'm going to get GTA 6 at all. I have a grudge against Take2 since they had Gearbox update all the old Borderlands games right before Borderlands 4 came out to include an anticheat software and the EULA now states that any info the anticheat scrapes can be sold to their marketing partners. So they turned all of those games into spyware. Rockstar and Take2 both stated that the already over-monitized GTA Online is actually under-monitized, so I fully expect the GTA 6 online to be more of a fucking nightmare than EA's Battlefront 2 on release. And I also hate how as soon as Rockstar saw how profitable GTAO was, they cancelled the single player DLC and shoehorned all that shit into GTAO.
I'm tired, boss. It'll be a cold day in hell before I spend money on a triple-A game again

Yeah, they never outright stated it, but this was all found in one of the big data leaks from Rockstar. The first was mostly finished and involved Trevor working with the CIA, doing a heist on the casino, and going on James Bond/Austin Powers like adventures. The second DLC was a zombie survival scenario (probably going to be like RDR's Undead Nightmare) with Micheal and his family. And the final DLC basically just had concept art of Franklin being sucked up into a UFO.
All the cars and the casino heist from Trevor's DLC is in GTAO. The cars modified with sheet metal and spikes from Michael's DLC got repurposed into a Mad Max type of update for GTAO.

No, but also I was never going to buy GTA6.
I loved GTA3, Vice City & San Andreas. Played for hundreds of hours. I played GTA4 for a few hours but it never really clicked the same. I also played Saints Row 2 and Saints Row 3, which I really enjoyed and scratched that same itch (those games eventually went a little over the top, but I still had fun.)
When GTA5 came out all I ever heard about it was it being "online" which turned me off of the series completely. I think I later understood that there is a single player component and an online component, but by then I didn't really care.
If anything I'm likely to try revisiting GTA4 this year. Maybe.

Well the game launched without an online component. So at launch, it shouldn't be talked about it being an online game. I purchased it way back on launch for Xbox 360, and that much later on PC for sale. Never played the online part, not interested in that. The single player campaign is pretty fun though, especially the character Trevor. No spoilers (in case you don't know much about details).
BTW I never finished GTA 4 (on PC). I like the driving much better in 4 over 5. Driving in 5 is more simple and approachable, but I don't like that.

I looked it up, since I wasn't sure, it looks like online launched about two weeks after the single player game. But it also was console exclusive for two years. When it came out for PC is when it actually began to catch my attention, and it launched on PC as both GTA5 and Online.
So that's probably where my confusion came from. I already hadn't played GTA4 so it wasn't high on my list to investigate further.
It's funny I looked into GTA4 and GTA5 support on the Steam Deck. GTA4 says playable and online reviews say it works well. GTA5 says unsupported but online reviews say it also works great, but you can't play it online. So both are options for me.
The stories and single player is definitely what interests me, so maybe someday.

GTA 5 is playable on Linux and I think on Steam Deck. And even GTA Online, that is part of GTA 5 basically, was playable on Linux. But one day after years, Rockstar said "nah, no online for Linux users anymore" and since then its not functional for us anymore. But the single player campaign is playable.
That's where the confusing messages are about the support. Partly because two different products share a single rating, but also because one part was functional before.
Edit: Ah another thing. Original GTA 5 was replaced by Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced https://store.steampowered.com/app/3240220/Grand_Theft_Auto_V_Enhanced/, which is basically the Playstation 5 version of the game. They renamed the original GTA 5 version something like GTA 5 Legacy https://store.steampowered.com/app/271590/Grand_Theft_Auto_V_Legacy/ and is still available to those who had purchased it before. You can't purchase the original version anymore!

If it is the single player and story that interests you then just stick to GTA 4. In my opinion the story in 5 is boring as fuck and very quickly falls into a loop that is just mind numbingly dull.

GTA 4 looks more like a traditional movie and is a bit more serious than the goofy GTA 5. But I also like the goofiness and over-the-topness of it. It's a different style, wouldn't say its better or worse. And they also tried to appeal to the mass even more with 5, partially the 3 characters is evidence of it. But I have to say, I care more about the characters in GTA 4 than in 5.

GTA 4 went for a lot more realistic vibe, it's very gray and a lot less arcadey. GTA 5 is a lot more colourful, both in visuals and gameplay. They even brought back fill frenzies/rampages, in an interesting story-friendly way (most of them are a character's psychotic breaks, some are a drug trip).

I'm in the same boat, I've played all of the older GTAs, but I never played GTA5. I even got the game for free from Epic... Maybe I'll try it out eventually.
I'm not very interested in buying GTA6, but I'll probably check out some gameplay/highlight videos to see if there's any new/interesting tech in it.

I'm not at all surprised to see the "not interested" and "wait for a sale" options being massively ahead on Lemmy. Though it'd be interesting to see how different the "not interested" crowd would be if the option were split into "not interested at all" and "interested but wont buy for political/moral reasons".
The comments here imply most would vote for the second option, but I'm in the first camp myself. I've never been interested in any of the GTA games.

I'm in both camps, but also I think there should be a "Arrr" option. I'm also in that camp, mostly out of curiosity. I want to see what compromises they make on this game, and how they choose to accomplish certain tasks. It's going to be a massive game culturally, and I want to be aware of what they're doing.

Devs do nothing to support proton, it’s proton mimics windows behavior so game will work. It probably will, it will be a huge initiative to make it work for proton given the interest to this game. Still not going to pay until they make a pc version even if it will require multiple years to wait.

Probably true for most games, including GTA series. But there are devs who officially support the Proton version. I have no list at hand, maybe lot of Indie devs do, but one I know for a fact is Marvel Rivals (even being an online game). Sometimes devs do actually update the game to get the Great on Deck Verified-rating. That includes default settings, ingame settings for Deck in example or other Linux related notes, while being played through Proton. That in fact can be classified as Proton support, just not marketed as such.

That's not necessarily true, games that have kernel level anti-cheat purposefully don't work with proton. Similar to that there are other things dev can inadvertedly do that causes issues with Proton. In short it's not that devs have to do something specific to support Proton, but they have to keep it in mind, not every game works, and if the dev doesn't care to make it work it might never work.

The platform would be PC. But yeah, that point is a bit unclear how to interpret. I am personally on PC and consider the game launching on "my" platform. However the implication is, that the single player will be playable on Linux. All previous GTA games are playable, so I would assume GTA 6 will be too.

I'd say there's a 99.99% chance singleplayer works on Linux. Everything does now, unless they choose to not support it. The big question is if online does. It looks like maybe GTA5 Online works, but may require some work. Some things say it has kernel level AC, but some things say they've gotten it working. I'd say there's probably a 70% chance online works.
I'm not purchasing it regardless though.

Yup, they haven't even announced a release date. But I'm sure they'll do typical Rockstar shit and charge the full $80 when they release it two years after console.
There's thoughts it'll come to PC sooner than five did because Rockstar postponed PC port of five to work on the next Gen console release, but I honestly don't even care. There's like 20 games in my backlog and other great games will release before then. The large lapse in time between titles has me feeling totally fine never playing 6.

Nah. Never been interested in the IP, and I've come to hate open-world games. They're always the same sh*t with the same repetitive tasks. How can a game be a game when most of its gameplay is litteraly a list of chores in-between driving sequences longer than a loading screen?

Rockstar open worlds are more like chapter selection screens, where you choose between about 3 different action missions at any given time. Familiarity with the open world not only grounds it in a sense of place but also helps with navigation when you're plotting a getaway. The checklist of chores is more of a Ubisoft thing.

What does
VfMstand for? I see it has something to do with with the playtime and money rate, but I don't know what that term means. Its okay for me to spent 30 Euros to play 8 hours. It can be incredible. Then there could be a game that cost 6 Euros and has a playtime of 35 hours, but it could be less fun and exciting. You're right! E.g. some story-heavy games with great mechanics and immersion might be worth spending more on; it's just a general rule of thumb I have!
(maybe it takes a bit more time for me to familiarize myself with the characters, controls, mechanics etc, so I don't prefer a game to be too expensive or too short; and in general I consider it a bonus if a game has huge replayability, support for mods, and procedural generation for example)
But in any case, I still find the ratio to be a useful tool!:

I chose "wait until sale" because there will apparently be no actual physical release, but I'd consider getting the $80 version at some point if there was one. I was fully prepared to just buy it on release, but $80 digital-only left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't appreciate Rockstar's blatant greed and it immediately dropped it from "must-buy" to "buy later at some point, maybe."
Now, if they made a Bully 2? I'd pay $100 for that.

The poll does not break down if people are not buying it because they object to some aspect of the release or they are not buying it because the game does not appeal to them. It makes it sound like there is a large boycott of the game when it could just be GTA indifferents (like me) stuffing the ballot box.

For me, the satire was the best part of the GTA franchise. After San Andreas the quality of the writing really suffered IMHO.

For me San Andreas was the best game. The mechanics were solid and the game had a whimsy to it that was completely thrown away with 4 and 5. I didn't think the story writing was particularly good, but the characters and missions were super memorable and fun.

If it turns out basically everyone has a copy I'll need to get him one, you know how it is, and with the license-share on our xboxs itll mean I'll get a copy too. Hopefully the youth of today are actually a lot more politically-minded than i imagine, or the cost of living crisis will mean nearly no parents buy it for them, but I bet I'm going to be buying it.

I'm planning to buy it, once it releases on PC.
I am a fan of the games though, and have been since the first one. GTA 5 had a great amount of replay value (a lot of my friends, and myself, have replayed it a few times).
If someone isn't a fan of it, and they didn't enjoy the story and such, then I can imagine it to be an easy pass. I'm looking forward to the madness of it lol.

If I avoid buying games with high storage requirements then I don't need to spend much on SSDs. For large games the storage costs isn't insignificant at this point

You are not entirely wrong, but you can always delete games which you currently not play. And redownload it later when you want to, provided your internet access is fast enough without a cap to make this strategy viable. I have enough space, but I still delete games often because their constant updates are annoying.

Yeah, depends how long you are likely to not play it. For me a large game is at least an overnight download. Still, quicker than waiting for the weekend to go to a shop.

I fully understand. Because my old internet access was much slower too, where I had to download the entire night and half the day before able to play large games.
Workaround idea:
I think there could be an alternative, at least when using Steam on PC (or Steam Deck). Steam has an option to move games from one place to another. So if you have, you could install game on an external hard drive (not SSD) with plenty of space, that doesn't cost your arm and legs. Then when you want to play the game again, simple move it with Steam from external drive to your internal SSD. I am not sure if this is possible with Playstation, the Xbox supports it I think. And besides that, some games are playable from slower drives anyway.

I do move games around already, currently in the process of moving from HDD to SSD storage, hence cutting down heavily on large games.
Few years ago I was planning on getting a 4TB SSD when they were getting close to £200. Not a chance now! So instead I am just going to downsize on data capacity instead. Some of the HDDs are approaching a decade of power on time at this point. 1+2TB.
Just today got 2x512GB SATA SSDs second hand. Plan to get a 256GB M.2 for my OS to sit on too, which frees up my current 500GB SATA SSD to join the new SSDs as well. Fairly easy to add more drives later on too, just have to remind myself how the LVM commands work each time.
Tonights job is to add the SSDs to the LVM and remove the HDDs. Might get the M.2 over the weekend and then decide if I go for a new OS install or just copy it over. Probably time I did a fresh install tbh.

I tried GTA5 when EpicGames had it as a freebe and put it away after about an hour because the characters were so awefull and stupid, I could not stand it at all. That and driving the cars felt bad, there was nothing fun in the game for me. GTA just stopped being a game for me when it went 3D

I thought that GTA V wasn’t as good as San Andreas but I still quite enjoyed it. I liked Franklin and his story quite a bit. Michael and Trevor would have been fine as side characters, as playable characters I don’t really care too much about them beyond the Brad, Trevor, Michael, FBI agent triangle

Not really. They are not as bad as GTA 5 but the story lost me after a few hours each too. I think that I just doesn't want to be a criminal scumbag, not even in a game. They may be great games, but they are not for me.

In GTA 5, that depends in the hardware. For Playstation and XBox, the disc was enough. No code activation required.
Do they change that, too?

The disk isn't completely useless. It's a physical license key that is transferable and resellable. I was fully planning to purchase a used console to play GTA 6 with a physical disk, then sell both when it came out on PC. That's still my best plan I guess.

Maybe when the Ultimate version is <$50 on PC in a few years. That'll give time for big bug fixes and dlc to come out. AAA games just aren't worth getting at launch anymore.

I don't think I'll get it. Maybe if it's on deep discount on PC eventually, and it doesn't have horrible DRM, and the reviews are good.
I didn't really like gta5 that much. It's very on rails / Simon-says in a lot of the stories. I guess they're going for something cinematic. I'd rather have something more like an immersive sim.

In that case your answer isn't "no I won't", more "maybe if it's good". The "Not interested" Is for anyone who is not interested into buying the game. But I agree that an option for waiting after launch, but not necessary for the price, is missing.

Voted yes day 1 standard edition but the reality is more I will wait a bit and see if it's as enticing as have the other ones. So I won't wait for a sale or anything. I used to buy consoles just for GTA games :-), not gonna do that but I might get hyped.

I like gta series, was a huge fan since the very first one. Online is a cancer, but everything else I rather enjoyed.
However I suspect it will be very hefty, and I am absolutely sure my old computer wouldn't be sufficient to run it even on low. And since ram isn't made for people to buy anymore, I will never be able to afford an upgrade.
Therefore my answer is "I'll never buy it even though I'm interested"

The game has to run on Playstation 5, and presumably on Xbox Series S. And thanks to upscaling technology, its easier to run high demanding games on lower spec systems. This doesn't help with CPU or RAM, but I assume there will be lot of settings. There is only so much an old system can do, no idea how old it is.

The only recent aaa game that I've played was the new 007 one, and it took me a lot of finangling to make it run somewhat playable, but in the end I have found a set of settings where it works. But the process was long enough for me to believe that it's probably the last aaa game I manage to play.

Never really understood the appeal of it though the shitty DRM and PC ports they had didn't help. Tried to play GTA SA(?) more than 10 years ago but the bicycle controls were so bad ona tenkeyless keyboard I couldn't progress. Same thing with the drone controls in Vice City. GTA IV was unplayable due to securom nonsense which after I bypassed, ran into some GFWL error that I gave up on. GTAV was extremely boring for me with how slow the gameplay was. For a game called Grand Theft Auto I was expecting a lot more action. Being forced to do yoga and deliver cars was not at all enjoyable for me.
On the contrary, I found the pre-reboot Saints Row games really fun and so did Sleeping Dogs. All of those games scratches the itch that I had expected GTA to scratch and did it better than GTA did in my opinion. Maybe I'm just not the target audiemce.

I can't vote because of my VPN... but I'll wait for a sale before purchasing Grand Theft Auto VI. I don't agree with spending $70+ for a game that I might enjoy for a handful of hours. No game is worth that price to me. I firmly believe in voting with my money, so I won't support the industry that keeps inflating game prices.
Plus, I never buy games at release anyway. No game seems to be perfectly polished at release now (unless it's been in early access for over 5 years) and I'd rather wait and let others find all the game-breaking bugs and get them patched first.
I remember a time when games were strictly offline. A new game released and whatever flaws it had were just part of the experience forever. Game studios were especially careful to ensure their games were as close to perfect as they could get.
Now with everything connected to the Internet, game studios just release a messy pile of code and drop day-one patches to make it semi-playable, with the expectation that gamers will find and complain about other problems that the studio can patch out later. There's no more pride in making a quality game anymore, it's just pushing garbage as fast as possible and fixing it in post.
I'll wait maybe a year or so until Grand Theft Auto VI drops to $20-30 during a Steam sale and then buy it. I have plenty of other games to play in the meantime; I'm in no rush to experience it.

I'll probably buy it for PC but they haven't even announced if they're making a PC port. The PC version of GTA 5 didn't come out until 2 years after the original release date and wasn't even based on the original version of the game. The PC port was based on the enhanced edition.
I wonder if by time the game launches for PC if there will even be an ultimate edition or if it will just all get rolled into an enhanced edition or something.

I do hope it launches on PC before the next generation consoles. And I expect some sort of Collectors Edition (soon) with a game disc included, for the folks on console who want the game on disc. A code in the box is so stupid...

The last GTA I really got into was Vice City on PS2. I did get San Andreas as a gift but tbh it might still be in its shrinkwrap because WoW was around that time and since I stopped playing WoW, I've diversified my gaming to the point where I have a shitload of games I have yet to try across a variety of platforms. And I heard a lot of shit about V like getting griefed by cheaters that I never tried it and at this point the AAA label is more of a repulsor than attractor and I still have all those other games to try.
